Abstract:In this work, we have developed signal quality monitoring approaches in 100/400 Gbit/s short-reach transmission systems, with the application of four advanced modulation formats. In 100G and 400G transmission systems, it is shown that accuracies of 100 % have been achieved in the modulation format identification (MFI), with the use of random forest (RF) and multitask learning-based artificial neural network (MTL-ANN) for the four modulation formats mentioned. Meanwhile, average mean-square errors (MSEs) of the monitored optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNRs) are less than 0.1 dB. Random forest uses up to 29 adders and 190 comparators, reducing its complexity by two orders of magnitude compared to MTL-ANN.

Abstract:The performance monitoring of optical transmit unit (OTU) dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical networks was realized. The transmit wavelength, optical power and biased current can be monitored at arbitrary time through the micro-control unit. The alarms can be brought into effect and the lasers can be regulated automatically when the laser performance is abnormal. The experiments of 16 × 10 Gb/s for the system were carried out with the power penalty less than 2 dB (bit error rate=10-10).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an OSNR monitoring technique for 80-Gb/s polarization-multiplexed RZ-DPSK utilizing narrowband optical filter and RF spectrum analysis. Maximum RF power increment of 19.7 dB, insensitive to CD and PMD, is measured for monitoring of OSNR up to 27 dB.

Abstract:Recently, technologies such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) and asynchronous amplitude histograms (AAHs) are widely employed in the optical performance monitoring (OPM). In this paper, the number of layers and the optimization of the neural networks are investigated to complete a series of monitoring tasks in optical communication systems with a large range of chromatic dispersion (CD) and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). It is shown that the monitoring accuracy has been significantly improved with such implementations. Numerical simulations, which have been conducted for six different modulation formats, demonstrate a good monitoring performance, with an average OSNR monitoring error of 0.1064 dB (99.49% monitoring accuracy) for the OSNR range of 10-40 dB and an average CD monitoring error of 3.3324 ps/nm (99.45% monitoring accuracy) for the CD range of 170-1870 ps/nm, respectively. Furthermore, the CD monitoring and the modulation format identification (MFI) have also been investigated for the system with a large range of dispersion. An average CD error of 16.6832 ps/nm (99.45% monitoring accuracy) and a 100% MFI accuracy have been achieved for all six modulation formats. This scheme is also verified experimentally with OSNR errors of 0.41 dB and CD errors of 15.21 ps/nm, respectively. The identification accuracy of the three modulation formats in the experimental system is also 100%.

Abstract:Inter-symbol interference (ISI), mode coupling (MC) and other impairments present in high baud rate mode division multiplexing (MDM) systems significantly degrade the reliability and accuracy of optical signal transmission. Therefore, performing joint multi-parameter optical performance monitoring (OPM) is crucial to ensure the efficient operation of the system. We propose a scheme that combines asynchronous single-channel sampling (ASCS) images with a multi-task residual neural network (MT-ResNet) to enable cost-effective joint OPM at intermediate nodes in a 100 GBaud MDM system. The scheme requires only one photodetector to receive the signal. Based on the distinct characteristics exhibited by ASCS images for different parameters in the MDM system, the MT-ResNet is improved to capture correlations among parameters and learn residual information between inputs and outputs. This enables high-precision and rapid simultaneous implementation of modulation format identification (MFI), MC estimation, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) estimation, and chromatic dispersion identification (CDI) in the intermediate nodes of a 100 GBaud MDM system. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified using a 100 GBaud QPSK/8QAM/16QAM/32QAM/64QAM MDM simulation transmission system with five spatial modes (LP 01 /LP 11a /LP 11b /LP 21a /LP 21b ). The results show that under the influence of different linewidth (LW) of laser and differential mode group delay (DMGD), a 100 % identification success rate can be achieved for five commonly used MFs and eight different cumulative CD values in high baud rate MDM systems, across a wide range of OSNR. Additionally, the mean absolute error (MAE) of OSNR estimation corresponding to the five MFs is 0.22 dB, 0.26 dB, 0.30 dB, 0.32 dB, and 0.36 dB, respectively. The MAE of the eight different MC intensities fluctuate between 0.015 and 0.030. These results fully demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme. Furthermore, the scheme exhibits favorable tolerance to large LWs and fiber nonlinear effects. Moreover, the complexity of the scheme is accurately analyzed through floating-point operations (FLOPs) and parameters (Params), which are much less than existing typical schemes, with specific values of 14.8849 M and 1.3798 M.

Abstract:OSNR monitoring is indispensable for coherent systems to ensure robust, reliable network operation and potentially enable impairment-aware routing for future dynamic optical networks. In a long-haul transmission link with chromatic dispersion (CD) and fiber nonlinearity, it is difficult to distinguish between amplifier noise and fiber nonlinearity induced distortions from received signal distributions even after various transmission impairment compensation techniques, thus resulting in grossly inaccurate OSNR estimates. Based on the received signal distributions after carrier phase estimation (CPE), we propose to characterize the nonlinearity-induced amplitude noise correlation across neighboring symbols and incorporate such information into error vector magnitude (EVM) calculation to realize fiber nonlinearity-insensitive OSNR monitoring. For a transmission link up to 1600 km and signal launched power up to 2 dBm, experimental results for 112 Gb/s polarization-multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (PM-QPSK) demonstrate an OSNR monitoring range of 10-24 dB with a maximum estimation error below 1 dB. For 224 Gb/s PM-16-quadrature amplitude modulation (PM-16-QAM) systems, simulation results demonstrate an OSNR monitoring range of 18-28 dB with a maximum estimation error below 1 dB. Tolerance of the proposed OSNR monitoring technique to different pulse shapes, timing phase offsets, polarization dependent loss (PDL), polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and WDM effects are also investigated through simulations.

Abstract:Advanced modulation formats combined with digital signal processing and direct detection is a promising way to realize high capacity, low cost and power efficient short reach optical transmission system. In this paper, we present a detailed investigation on the performance of three advanced modulation formats for 100 Gb/s short reach transmission system. They are PAM-4, CAP-16 and DMT. The detailed digital signal processing required for each modulation format is presented. Comprehensive simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance of each modulation format in terms of received optical power, transmitter bandwidth, relative intensity noise and thermal noise. The performance of each modulation format is also experimentally studied. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first demonstration of a 112 Gb/s transmission over 10km of SSMF employing single band CAP-16 with EML. Finally, a comparison of computational complexity of DSP for the three formats is presented.

Abstract:Metro network, as a medium distance transmission system, poses a special challenge of transmission capacity and cost. In this paper, we present a detailed comparison of applying three advanced modulation formats including pulse amplitude modulation-4 (PAM-4), carrierless amplitude and phase modulation-16 QAM (CAP-16), and discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) with low-cost direct detection for 100-Gb/s/ metro optical transmission systems. These modulation formats are all experimentally demonstrated with similar digital signal processing algorithms. Three kinds of chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation ways named CD precompensation method, single sideband (SSB), and dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) are also compared. Two types of modulators including an IQ modulator and a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator are employed to generate SSB or CD precompensated signals in this experiment and their transmission performance is also evaluated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the performance of single-wavelength 100-G signal transmission based on direct detection is evaluated over 480 km of standard single mode fiber with PAM-4, CAP-16, and DFT-S OFDM modulation formats.

Abstract:The basic requirement for short reach large capacity optical communications is high-speed, low power consumption, and modular multichannel parallel optical transmitters or transceivers with transmission and receiving capabilities incorporated in a single module. To characterize the performance of multichannel optical transceivers comprehensively quickly with high accuracy and reliability, a test system based on LabVIEW for optical transmission module is established. The optical transmission module parameters including optical power, extinction ratio, rise time and fall time can be tested, evaluated and analyzed. Based on the system, important parameters can be acquired at same time with the same injection current level, thus increasing the test efficiency, accuracy and repeatability, and avoiding the errors in manual recording of test data when many test runs are implemented. High-speed parallel optical transmission modules were tested. The test results show that the extinction ratio is reasonable, with typical extinction ratios of ~9dB, single channel optical powers of ~1mW, and the total data rates of the module can be up to 30Gbps, with satisfactory eye diagram good enough for short range data transmission.

Field Transmission of I OOG and Beyond: Multiple Baud Rates and Mixed Line Rates Using Nyquist-WDM Technology

Abstract:In this paper, we describe successful joint experiments with Deutsche Telecom on long-haul transmission of 100G and beyond over standard single mode fiber (SSMF) and with in-line EDFA-only amplification. The transmission link consists of 8 nodes and 950 km installed SSMF in DT' s optical infrastructure. Laboratory SSMF was added for extended optical reach. The first field experiment involved transmission of 8 x 216.8 Gbit/s Nyquist-WDM signals over 1750 km with 21.6 dB average loss per span. Each channel, modulated by a 54.2 Gbaud PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signal, is on a 50 GHz grid, which produces a net spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 bit/s/Hz. We also describe mixed-data-rate transmission coexisting with 1T, 400G, and 100G channels. The 400G channel uses four independent subcarriers modulated by 28 Gbaud PDM-QPSK signals. This yields a net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz, and 13 optically generated subcarriers from a single optical source are used in the 1T channel with 25 Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulation. The 100G signal uses real-time coherent PDM-QPSK transponder with 15% overhead of soft-decision forward-error correction (SD-FEC). The digital post filter and 1 -bit maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are introduced at the receiver DSP to suppress noise, linear crosstalk, and filtering effects. Our results show that future 400G and 1T channels that use Nyquist WDM can transmit over long-haul distances with higher SE and using the same QPSK format.

Abstract:Optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring is essential for control and management of dynamic optical networks. Small footprint, low cost, and less power consumption are always desirable for such monitoring system. In this paper, we demonstrate an integrated dispersion-insensitive in-band OSNR monitor based on a compact silicon microdisk resonator (MDR) with only 5-μm radius. The MDR (Q ~ 54 000) functions as an ultranarrow bandpass filter in the measurement of the OSNR. The monitoring performance is evaluated in a 10-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) system and is shown to be insensitive to chromatic dispersion from 0 to 850 ps/nm. The input power requirement of the monitor is also studied, which is consistent with the desire for low-power operation. Finally, we analyze the sensitivity of this technique for various Q factors of the MDRs. The results indicate that the sensitivity of this scheme can be improved with higher Q factors.

Abstract:We propose an in-service crosstalk monitoring and tracing method using fine-grained monitoring optical time slices for SDM-enabled intra-datacenter and HPC systems. Modal crosstalk below -36.01dB was successfully monitored and traced in an MMF transmission system.

Abstract:Exchange of information in fast, reliable and secure way with access anywhere is a must for a modern society. This leads to emerging traffic in Data Centers imposing tight requirements for short-reach optical links [1]. Research activities around next generation GbE interfaces requires wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for short-reach optical links. Therefore C-band for intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) short-reach optical communications is even more attractive [2]. In this talk we review experimental intensity modulation and direct detection demonstrations for short reach optical links. Furthermore, we evaluate 330-Gbps line rate with 128 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) discrete multitone (DMT) [3] and 300 Gbps line rate with 100 Gbaud 8-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM8) [4] IMDD transmission after 400 meters below pre-forward error correction (FEC) bit error rate (BER) with a single packaged externally modulated laser (EML), a DAC and a packaged InP photo-detector (PD) in C-band [5].

Abstract:The fundamental performance limits of coherent optical transmission systems can be observed by a simple optimization between the linear noise and the nonlinear noise generated within the system. Optical Phase Conjugation (OPC) is considered to be one of the promising techniques to compensate for optical fiber’s dispersion and nonlinearity that cause crosstalk between signals traveling through long-haul optical transmission systems, nonlinearity compensation can lead to significant information capacity and distance reach expansion of optical fiber transmission links. To get the full benefit from the deployment of OPC in optical transmission systems, a few considerations must be taken into account, such as: power profile symmetry, fiber’s dispersion slope and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). In this contribution, we will present our simplified theoretical predictions of optical fiber transmission systems performance that deploy mid-link OPC and multiOPC and we will show that the introduction of multi-OPC in an optical transmission system will minimize the impact of uncompensated/nondeterministic signal-signal nonlinear interactions due to fiber’s PMD and signal-noise interactions. We will show wide range of simulation and experimental results that validate the theoretical predictions of system’s performance for various types of links: dispersion managed, dispersion unmanaged, discretely amplified systems and distributed Raman amplified systems. Also, we will present an extensive experimental study shows that the deployment of mid-link OPC can provide a significant reach improvement in asymmetric lumped optical fiber links when optimizing the span length.

Abstract:We introduce a novel technique to monitor optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) in optical transport networks using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The experiments show that the method has high accuracy and large dynamic range. The error is less than 0.5 dB for OSNR between 10 dB to 40 dB in the best case. The key advantage of this method is its low cost.
