Abstract:The formation rate of self‐trapped excitons (STEs) is influenced by the trapping depth (Etrap) of the excitons and the phonon energy (Ephonon). The non‐radiative loss of STEs from detrapping back to free‐exciton state is negligible due to the large Etrap. The intersection of STE band and ground state can serve as an non‐radiative loss pathway. Low‐dimensional copper halides having nontoxic elements are attracting increasing attention for their peculiar emission properties. Self‐trapped excitons (STEs) account for their high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) with emission that can stretch across the entire visible spectrum. However, intrinsic factors that influence the formation or loss of the emissive species in low‐dimensional copper halides remain elusive. Here, a comprehensive study on the STE formation dynamics of one‐dimensional CsCu2I3 and zero‐dimensional Cs3Cu2I5 is presented. It is found from STE kinetic analysis that a slower STE formation demonstrated by the 1D structure is not hindered by a potential barrier, but instead related to the number of phonons released in the self‐trapping process. It is further revealed that in 1D CsCu2I3, the non‐radiative recombination of STEs mainly occurs via the intersection between the STE state and the ground state in the configuration coordinate diagram, placing an intrinsic limit on the PLQY at room temperature. These findings show that the STE formation is affected by both the self‐trapping depth and the phonon energy as opposed to a potential barrier in low‐dimensional copper halides. The better understanding of STE formation and recombination processes provide basis for improving design and performance for broadband light emitting devices.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of the formation of self-trapped excitons (STEs) and the associated broadband emission in metal-halide perovskites Cs$_4$SnBr$_6$ and Cs$_2$AgInCl$_6$, using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) with the dielectric-dependent hybrid (DDH) functional. Our approach allows for an accurate description of the excitonic effect and geometry relaxation in the electronic excited states and yields optical gap, STE emission energy, and emission spectra in reasonable agreement with experiments. We point out the significance of considering geometry relaxations in the electronic excited state by showing that the exciton-phonon coupling computed in the ground-state atomic geometry is insufficient to describe the physical properties of STEs. Overall, we find that TDDFT with the DDH hybrid functional is a suitable approach for the study of the formation of STEs in perovskite and provides insights for designing metal-halide perovskites with tailored emission properties.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites are highly attractive for lighting applications, but the multiexcitonic emission processes in these crystals are largely unexplored. This study presents an investigation of Sb3+-doped Cs2ZrCl6 perovskite crystals that display double luminescence due to the intrinsic host self-trapped excitons (denoted as host STEs) and dopant-induced extrinsic self-trapped excitons (denoted as dopant STEs), respectively. Steady-state and transient-state spectroscopy reveal that the host and dopant STEs can be independently charged at specific energies. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the multiexcitonic emission stems from minimal interactions between the host and dopant STEs in the zero-dimensional crystal lattice. By selective excitation of different STEs through precise control of excitation wavelength, we further demonstrate dynamic color tuning in the Cs2ZrCl6:Sb3+ crystals. The color kinetic feature offers exciting opportunities for constructing multicolor light-emitting devices and encrypting multilevel optical codes.
Broadband Extrinsic Self‐Trapped Exciton Emission in Sn‐Doped 2D Lead‐Halide Perovskites

Abstract:As emerging efficient emitters, metal-halide perovskites offer the intriguing potential to the low-cost light emitting devices. However, semiconductors generally suffer from severe luminescence quenching due to insufficient confinement of excitons (bound electron-hole pairs). Here, Sn-triggered extrinsic self-trapping of excitons in bulk 2D perovskite crystal, PEA2 PbI4 (PEA = phenylethylammonium), is reported, where exciton self-trapping never occurs in its pure state. By creating local potential wells, isoelectronic Sn dopants initiate the localization of excitons, which would further induce the large lattice deformation around the impurities to accommodate the self-trapped excitons. With such self-trapped states, the Sn-doped perovskites generate broadband red-to-near-infrared (NIR) emission at room temperature due to strong exciton-phonon coupling, with a remarkable quantum yield increase from 0.7% to 6.0% (8.6 folds), reaching 42.3% under a 100 mW cm-2 excitation by extrapolation. The quantum yield enhancement stems from substantial higher thermal quench activation energy of self-trapped excitons than that of free excitons (120 vs 35 meV). It is further revealed that the fast exciton diffusion involves in the initial energy transfer step by transient absorption spectroscopy. This dopant-induced extrinsic exciton self-trapping approach paves the way for extending the spectral range of perovskite emitters, and may find emerging application in efficient supercontinuum sources.

This explains the vanishment of extrinsic STE emission at room temperature and the reported low photoluminescence quantum yields (<50%). With growing efforts to obtain multiple-band emitters, our insights into the emission mechanisms of intrinsic and extrinsic STEs provide valuable bases for further material engineering.
Unveiling Sb3+ Doping and Tricolor Luminescence from Intrinsic Self-Trapped Excitons in Cs2ZnCl4 Crystals

Abstract:Zero-dimensional (0D) lead-free halide perovskites have lately received significant interest owing to their captivating broadband emissions. An in-depth understanding of the luminescence mechanism of self-trapped excitons (STEs) and realization of effective regulation of luminescence properties have become a major challenge in the research of lead-free metal halides. Herein, we have synthesized the Cs2ZnCl4 and Sb3+-doped Cs2ZnCl4 crystals and conducted a comprehensive investigation into their distinct electronic structures and optical characteristics. The findings from both experimental and theoretical investigations indicate that the tricolor luminescence in Cs2ZnCl4 and blue emission in Sb3+-doped Cs2ZnCl4 stem from intrinsic STEs, and the near-infrared emission originates from extrinsic STEs associated with the Sb3+ ion in Sb3+-doped Cs2ZnCl4. Sb3+ doping increases the quantum yield of Cs2ZnCl4 to a large extent. In addition, intersystem crossing, exciton self-trapping, and lattice relaxation are the main reasons for the large Stokes shift. The present study is expected to provide a novel perspective for researchers in comprehending the luminescent mechanism of STEs and advancing the utilization of 0D lead-free metal halides in optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Zero-dimensional (0D) halides perovskites, in which anionic metal-halide octahedra (MX6) 4 are separated by organic or inorganic countercations, have recently shown promise as excellent luminescent materials. However, the origin of the photoluminescence (PL) and, in particular, the different photophysical properties in hybrid organic-inorganic and all inorganic halides are still poorly understood. In this work, first-principles calculations were performed to study the excitons and intrinsic defects in 0D hybrid organic-inorganic halides (C4N2H14X) 4SnX6 (X = Br, I), which exhibit a high photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) at room temperature (RT), and also in the 0D inorganic halide Cs4PbBr6, which suffers from strong thermal quenching when T 4 100 K. We show that the excitons in all three 0D halides are strongly bound and cannot be detrapped or dissociated at RT, which leads to immobile excitons in (C4N2H14X) 4SnX6. However, the excitons in Cs4PbBr6 can still migrate by tunneling, enabled by the resonant transfer of excitation energy (Dexter energy transfer). The exciton migration in Cs4PbBr6 leads to a higher probability of trapping and nonradiative recombination at the intrinsic defects. We show that a large Stokes shift and the negligible electronic coupling between luminescent centers are important for suppressing exciton migration; thereby, enhancing the photoluminescence quantum efficiency. Our results also suggest that the frequently observed bright green emission in Cs4PbBr6 is not due to the exciton or defect-induced emission in Cs4PbBr6 but rather the result of exciton emission from CsPbBr3 inclusions trapped in Cs(4)PbB(r)6.

Abstract:With strong electron-phonon coupling, the self-trapped excitons are usually formed in materials, which leads to the local lattice distortion and localized excitons. The self-trapping strongly depends on the dimensionality of the materials. In the three-dimensional case, there is a potential barrier for self-trapping, whereas no such barrier is present for quasi-one-dimensional systems. Two-dimensional (2D) systems are marginal cases with a much lower potential barrier or nonexistent potential barrier for the self-trapping, leading to the easier formation of self-trapped states. Self-trapped excitons emission exhibits a broadband emission with a large Stokes shift below the bandgap. 2D perovskites are a class of layered structure material with unique optical properties and would find potential promising optoelectronic. In particular, self-trapped excitons are present in 2D perovskites and can significantly influence the optical and electrical properties of 2D perovskites due to the soft characteristic and strong electron-phonon interaction. Here, we summarized the luminescence characteristics, origins, and characterizations of self-trapped excitons in 2D perovskites and finally gave an introduction to their applications in optoelectronics.

Abstract:Halide lead perovskites are considered as one of the most promising optoelectronic materials in decades, but the toxicity and bio-accumulation of lead retard the commercialization. Therefore, seeking suitable lead-free perovskites and their variants are of vital importance. In this work, all-inorganic zinc halide perovskite variant Cs2ZnCl4 crystals with Sb3+ doping are synthesized via hydrothermal method. Transparent millimeter-sized crystals exhibit bright red photoluminescence (PL) under room temperature (RT) on account of self-trapped exciton (STE) emission of Sb3+, from P-3(1) to S-1(0) states. Temperature-dependent PL and time-resolved PL exhibit bimodality and intensity variations, revealing that Jahn-Teller effect of P-3(1) state results two energy minima, and thermal activation may contribute to the spectrum change. Further, DFT calculations are carried out and the influences of Sb3+ doping are revealed. A bandgap reduction is achieved via doping, and the band edges are localized at Sb3+. A combination of experimental and theoretical studies demonstrates well that the soft lattice structure and the 5s(2) lone pairs of Sb are vital for the STE emission. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Low-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid lead halides have opened up a new frontier in single-component phosphors for white emission, which stems from self-trapped excitons (STEs), where STE states are dependent on lattice deformation, involving interactions between an inorganic skeleton and organic cations to consequently affect electron–phonon coupling. Herein, to decouple the crystal structure dominator on emission mechanisms, we employ the protonated benzimidazole as organic cations to synthesize two 100-oriented two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with Br– or Cl– as halogen anions, separately. Interestingly, even with a similar single layered crystal structure that is almost distortion-free in an inorganic octahedral framework, the two as-synthesized perovskites show distinct emission mechanisms. The underlying halogen regulatory mechanism is unveiled. In addition to changing the lattice deformation energy and self-trapping energy of STEs, the halogen substitution results in a 10-fold enhancement in electron–phonon coupling that affects STE dynamics. Therefore, this suggests a general design principle to tailor electron–phonon coupling in low-dimensional perovskites for broadband white emission.

Abstract:AbstractSoft lattice and strong exciton–phonon coupling have been demonstrated in layered double perovskites (LDPs) recently; therefore, LDPs represents a promising class of compounds as excellent self‐trapped exciton (STE) emitters for applications in solid‐state lighting. However, few LDPs with outstanding STE emissions have been discovered, and their optoelectronic properties are still unclear. Based on the three‐dimensional (3D) Cs2NaInCl6, we synthesized two 2D derivatives (PEA)4NaInCl8:Sb (PEA=phenethylamine) and (PEA)2CsNaInCl7:Sb with monolayer and bilayer inorganic sheets by a combination of dimensional reduction and Sb‐doping. Bright broadband emissions were obtained for the first time under ambient temperature and pressure, with photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) of 48.7 % (monolayer) and 29.3 % (bilayer), superior to current known LDPs. Spectroscopic characterizations and first‐principles calculations of excited state indicate the broadband emissions originate from STEs trapped at the introduced [SbCl6]3− octahedron.

Abstract:All-inorganic zero-dimensional (0D) metal halides are highly attractive for optoelectronic applications, but rational control over the temperature dependence of luminescence in these materials remains an unfulfilled task. This study presents an investigation of thermo-responsive luminescence in doped Cs2ZnCl4 crystals. Density functional theory calculations reveal a thermal elevation of the orbital state of the dopant ions originating from distortion of the local coordination polyhedron, leading to a blueshift of the self-trapped exciton (STE) emissions. By examining a series of Cs2ZnCl4 crystals doped with Sb3+, Te4+, Cu+, and Mn2+, we quantitatively address the polyhedral distortion and its effect on the luminescence properties. Owing to the 0D nature of the host material, we further synthesize Sb3+/Mn2+ co-doped Cs2ZnCl4 with dual emissions that display distinct luminescence responses to thermal stimuli. The advances in these optical materials enable a new tactic to construct tunable thermochromic luminescence for applications such as thermal sensing and optical encryption.

Abstract:Cs2AgBiBr6 exhibits promising photovoltaic and light-emitting properties, making it a candidate for next-generation solar cells and LED technologies. Additionally, it serves as a model system within the family of halide double perovskites, offering insights into a broader class of materials. Here, we study various possible excited states of this material to understand its absorption and emission properties. We use time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) coupled with nonempirical hybrid functionals, specifically PBE0(α) and dielectric-dependent hybrids (DDH) to explore direct, indirect, and self-trapped excitons in this material. Based on comparison with experiment, we show that these methods can give excellent predictions of the absorption spectrum and that the fundamental band gap has been underestimated in previous computational studies. We connect the experimental photoluminescence signals at 1.9-2.0 eV to the emission from self-trapped excitons and electron polarons. Finally, we reveal a complex landscape with energetically competing direct, indirect, and self-trapped excitons in the material.

Realizing Efficient Photoluminescence Spectral Modulation via Sb 3+ /Ln 3+ co-doped Doping in Cs 2 NaInCl 6 Double Perovskites
