Abstract:The formation rate of self‐trapped excitons (STEs) is influenced by the trapping depth (Etrap) of the excitons and the phonon energy (Ephonon). The non‐radiative loss of STEs from detrapping back to free‐exciton state is negligible due to the large Etrap. The intersection of STE band and ground state can serve as an non‐radiative loss pathway. Low‐dimensional copper halides having nontoxic elements are attracting increasing attention for their peculiar emission properties. Self‐trapped excitons (STEs) account for their high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) with emission that can stretch across the entire visible spectrum. However, intrinsic factors that influence the formation or loss of the emissive species in low‐dimensional copper halides remain elusive. Here, a comprehensive study on the STE formation dynamics of one‐dimensional CsCu2I3 and zero‐dimensional Cs3Cu2I5 is presented. It is found from STE kinetic analysis that a slower STE formation demonstrated by the 1D structure is not hindered by a potential barrier, but instead related to the number of phonons released in the self‐trapping process. It is further revealed that in 1D CsCu2I3, the non‐radiative recombination of STEs mainly occurs via the intersection between the STE state and the ground state in the configuration coordinate diagram, placing an intrinsic limit on the PLQY at room temperature. These findings show that the STE formation is affected by both the self‐trapping depth and the phonon energy as opposed to a potential barrier in low‐dimensional copper halides. The better understanding of STE formation and recombination processes provide basis for improving design and performance for broadband light emitting devices.

First-Principles Investigation on the Stability, Electronic Structure, and Exciton Self-Trapping Mechanism of 0D and 1D Cs3Cu2Cl5

Abstract:Copper(I) halides with broadband emission from self-trapped excitons (STEs) are promising luminescent materials due to their structural diversities and intriguing photophysical properties. Despite great efforts invested in these materials, an in-depth understanding of their structural variations and the corresponding STE emission mechanisms is still lacking. Here, first-principles calculations reveal two distinct STEs in 0D and 1D polymorphs of Cs3Cu2Cl5, which feature the same chemical composition but different crystal structures. The electronic band structure analysis reveals that the strong Cu-Cl 4s-3p coupling along the 1D [Cu2Cl5]3- chain brings a large band dispersion, resulting in an increase of optical anisotropy in the 1D structure. The STE in 0D Cs3Cu2Cl5 involves the formation of one Cu-Cu bond and the breakage of two Cu-Cl bonds within an isolated [Cu2Cl5]3- unit. In contrast, the exciton self-trapping in the 1D structure is found to be associated with the formation of one Cu-Cu bond accompanied by two Cu-Cl bonds in the [Cu2Cl5]3- chain. Despite significant structural differences in 0D and 1D Cs3Cu2Cl5, quantitative characterizations of the configuration coordinate diagrams in the two polymorphs lead to similar STE emission energies (2.38 and 2.48 eV for 0D and 1D, respectively), which theoretically explains similar green-light emission experimentally observed in both compounds. This study provides important insights for understanding complex relations between the structural dimensionality, building units, and emission properties in low-dimensional metal halides.

Abstract:Zero-dimensional Cs3Cu2X5 (X=Cl, Br, or I), the intensively studied light-emitting materials, generally exhibit single-band emissions from intrinsic self-trapped excitons (STEs), while defect-induced (extrinsic) STEs were considered nonemissive. Herein, we observed a dual-band emission from intrinsic and extrinsic STEs for Cs3Cu2Br5 at low temperature, and their emission mechanisms are elucidated. The intrinsic and extrinsic STEs are trapped from different initial states, with remarkably large trapping depths (>900 meV) evaluated at 50 K, indicating their negligible detrapping rates. In addition, the stronger electron-phonon coupling for extrinsic STE could shift the extrinsic STE band to intersect with the ground state in the configuration coordinate diagram, acting as a nonradiative pathway. This explains the vanishment of extrinsic STE emission at room temperature and the reported low photoluminescence quantum yields (<50%). With growing efforts to obtain multiple-band emitters, our insights into the emission mechanisms of intrinsic and extrinsic STEs provide valuable bases for further material engineering.

Abstract:Recently, all-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3) quantum dots (QDs) have attracted great attention due to their halogen composition and size tunable band gap engineering, the same physical mechanism that is responsible for excellent performance in light-emitting devices. However, little is known about the time-resolved fluorescence quenching dynamics process of these CsPbX3 QDs. In this article, we present comprehensive contrastive spectral studies on the electron and hole extraction dynamics of CsPbX3 colloidal QDs with and without quencher by time-resolved femtosecond transient absorption (TA) and time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) spectroscopy methods. We have identified that the partial electrons of the conduction band and holes of the valence band of CsPbX3 QDs can be directly extracted by tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and phenothiazine (PTZ), respectively. Moreover, compared with the CsPbBr3 QDs, the CsPbI3 QDs showed relatively slower charge extraction rates. We also found that the CsPbBr3 QDs with smaller size showed faster carrier recombination rates and photoluminescence (PL) decay lifetime due to the relatively stronger quantum confinement effects. We believe that this study may be useful for realising optimal applications in photovoltaic and light emission devices.

Abstract:Recently, intense room-temperature midinfrared luminescent emission has been observed in high-symmetry PbTe quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a (001)-oriented CdTe single crystalline matrix [W. Heiss , Appl. Phys. Lett. 88, 192109 (2006)]. To interpret the optical transition in these newly realized QDs, we have developed a four-band (k) over right arrow.(p) over right arrow model that takes into account the anisotropic effects of the band structure and finite-confinement potential in the QDs. The high order term o(k(i)(4)) in the Hamiltonian is calculated using perturbation approximation methods. The simulation of the spontaneous emission of PbTe/CdTe QDs shows that two types of quantum structures were formed by the thermal annealing of the PbTe/CdTe quantum wells, as reported by Heiss , and the calculations are in good agreement with the experimental observations of the dot sizes and photoluminescence. The model can be extended to the description of interband optical transitions in other IV-VI QDs, such as PbSe/PbTe and PbSe/PbEuTe QDs that usually have a large size (with a typical lateral size of 50 nm and height of 20 nm) and small quantum confinement potential (< 100 meV) and are oriented in different directions.
HCOO- Doping-Induced Multiexciton Emissions in Cs3Cu2I5 Crystals for Efficient X-Ray Scintillation

Abstract:Self-trapped exciton (STE) luminescence, typically associated with structural deformation of excited states, has attracted significant attention in metal halide materials recently. However, the mechanism of multiexciton STE emissions in certain metal halide crystals remains largely unexplored. This study investigates dual luminescence emissions in HCOO- doped Cs3Cu2I5 single crystals using transient and steady-state spectroscopy. The dual emissions are attributed to intrinsic STE luminescence originating from the host lattice and extrinsic STE luminescence induced by external dopants, respectively, each of which can be triggered independently at distinct energy levels. Theoretical calculations reveal that multiexciton emission originates from structural distortion of the host and dopant STEs within the 0D lattice in their respective excited states. By meticulously tuning the excitation wavelength and selectively exciting different STEs, the dynamic alteration of color change in Cs3Cu2I5:HCOO- crystals is demonstrated. Ultimately, owing to an extraordinarily high photoluminescence quantum yield (99.01%) and a diminished degree of self-absorption in Cs3Cu2I5:HCOO- crystals, they exhibit remarkable X-ray scintillation characteristics with light yield being improved by 5.4 times as compared to that of pristine Cs3Cu2I5 crystals, opening up exciting avenues for achieving low-dose X-ray detection and imaging.
Intrinsic exciton photophysics of PbS quantum dots revealed by low-temperature single nanocrystal spectroscopy.

Abstract:With a tunable size-dependent photoluminescence (PL) over a wide infrared wavelength range, lead chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) have attracted significant scientific and technological interest. Nevertheless, the investigation of intrinsic exciton photophysics at the single-QD level has remained a challenge. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of PL properties for individual core/shell PbS/CdS QDs emissive near 1.0 eV. In contrast to the sub-meV spectral linewidths observed for II/VI QDs, PbS/CdS QDs are predicted to possess broad homogeneous linewidths. Performing spectroscopy at cryogenic (4 K) temperatures, we provide direct evidence confirming theoretical predictions, showing that intrinsic linewidths for PbS/CdS QDs are in the range of 8-25 meV, with an average of 16.4 meV. In addition, low-temperature, single-QD spectroscopy reveals a broad low-energy side emission attributable to optical as well as localized acoustic phonon-assisted transitions. By tracking single QDs from 4 K to 250 K we were able to probe tempera-ture-dependent evolutions of emission energy, linewidth and line shape. Finally, polariza-tion-resolved PL imaging showed that PbS/CdS QDs are characterized by a 3D emission dipole, in contrast with the 2D dipole observed for CdSe QDs.

Many-Body Correlations and Exciton Complexes in CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots

Abstract:All-inorganic lead-halide perovskite (LHP) (CsPbX3 , X = Cl, Br, I) quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a competitive platform for classical light-emitting devices (in the weak light-matter interaction regime, e.g., LEDs and laser), as well as for devices exploiting strong light-matter interaction at room temperature. Many-body interactions and quantum correlations among photogenerated exciton complexes play an essential role, for example, by determining the laser threshold, the overall brightness of LEDs, and the single-photon purity in quantum light sources. Here, by combining cryogenic single-QD photoluminescence spectroscopy with configuration-interaction (CI) calculations, the size-dependent trion and biexciton binding energies are addressed. Trion binding energies increase from 7 to 17 meV for QD sizes decreasing from 30 to 9 nm, while the biexciton binding energies increase from 15 to 30 meV, respectively. CI calculations quantitatively corroborate the experimental results and suggest that the effective dielectric constant for biexcitons slightly deviates from the one of the single excitons, potentially as a result of coupling to the lattice in the multiexciton regime. The findings here provide a deep insight into the multiexciton properties in all-inorganic LHP QDs, essential for classical and quantum optoelectronic devices.
Photoluminescence and Raman Spectra of One-Dimensional Lead-free Perovskite CsCu2I3 Single-Crystal Wires

Abstract:Lead-free highly luminescent CsCu2I3 perovskite has attracted much attention recently, but agreements on basic optical properties have remained unsettled. By correlating X-ray diffraction with the photoluminescence (PL) of CsCu2I3 single-crystal wires, we first show that blue PL at 420 nm originates from CuI. We then exclude defect states as a source for the broadband emission centered at 570 nm from the lack of defect absorption, PL under sub-bandgap photoexcitation, observations of a linear dependence of PL intensity on excitation laser power, and a strong spectral blueshift under mild hydrostatic pressure. Finally, using a model of the self-trapped exciton and the associated coordinate configuration diagram, we explain pressure evolutions of PL energy, intensity, and lifetime. Single-crystal wires also enable us to obtain polarization-dependent Raman spectra down to 10 cm(-1) and confirm their respective ambient crystal structure of orthorhombic Cmcm and phase transition to Pbnm at similar to 5 GPa.
Temperature-dependent Near-Infrared Emission of Highly Concentrated Cu2+in CaCuSi4O10phosphor

Abstract:CaCuSi4O10 (CCS4O) shows a 430-800 nm broad excitation band and an intense 918 nm near-infrared (NIR) emission peak at room temperature (RT). The electronic structure calculated by density functional theory (DFT) is discussed in an attempt to understand the small quenching effects in this highly concentrated Cu2+ material, which may be ascribed to the localization of 3d electrons of Cu2+ ion and weak interaction between Cu2+ ions. The assignments of photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and photoluminescence (PL) peaks are made based on the absorption spectrum and crystal field theory. In particular, we investigate the temperature-dependent PL spectra upon excitation by monochromatic light and simulated sunlight. The distinct variation in PL intensities with temperature upon the two means of excitation can be understood by configurational coordinate (CC) models, in which different thermal activation energies are considered. Furthermore, Ba2+-doped and Zn2+-doped series are used to illustrate the relation between the redshift of the PL peak and lattice expansion. The high thermal quenching temperature (555 K) and low concentration quenching (unchanged lifetimes when diluting Cu2+ ions) indicate that this phosphor has great potential as an inorganic dye for luminescent solar concentrator (LSC).

Temperature-dependent luminescence in pure and In+-Activated Cs3Cu2I5 single crystals

Abstract:We report our investigation of the low-temperature optical properties of high-quality Cs2Cu3I5:In+ perovskite single crystals grown by the vertical Bridgman technique. Temperature-dependent radioluminescence in the range 15–300K reveals two main emissions for In+ doped samples at ∼450 nm and the other at ∼620 nm assigned to self-trapping exciton and In+ emissions respectively. Wavelength-resolved thermoluminescence reveals that In+ emission centers are the preferred recombination center for trapped charges. Further investigation of photoluminescence emission/excitation maps reveals a complex electronic structure that arises from spin-orbit coupling-related transitions in In+ and is only observable at low temperatures. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence decay measurements reveal some instances of charge transfer between the self-trapped excitons and In+ ions, as well as some thermally-assisted radiative recombination processes.

Abstract:CsCu2I3 and Cs3Cu2I5 exhibiting self‐trapped exciton emission are attractive for light‐emitting applications. Carrier dynamics of these vapor deposited materials are examined by transient absorption and streak camera measurements. CsCu2I3 exhibits free exciton emission and noticeable changes in width and position of self‐trapped exciton emission in the streak camera results which are not observed in Cs3Cu2I5. Highly photoluminescent, lead‐free perovskites are of interest for displays and solid‐state light‐emitting devices. In this report, streak camera‐based time‐resolved emission and transient absorption spanning visible to deep‐ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths are utilized to study self‐trapped and free exciton dynamics in vacuum‐deposited cesium copper halide thin films of CsCu2I3 and Cs3Cu2I5. Self‐trapped exciton emission of CsCu2I3 exhibits more noticeable changes with time in the peak position and width than Cs3Cu2I5. UV‐to‐blue emission is detectable for both compositions, where free exciton emission is distinct for CsCu2I3. Transient absorption shows loss of ground‐state bleach signals at early time delays for both, and the bleach signal shifts toward higher energy as time delay increases, likely due to strains induced by the newly created self‐trapped excitons. Global analysis performed on the transient absorption results yields time constants in these materials that build an overall dynamic scheme. This work aids in building a complete picture regarding light emission in these promising materials.

Abstract:All-inorganic lead halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) of CsPbBr3 were synthesized at room temperature via a facile solution-based procedure. The cubic phase structure of the synthesized PQDs was judiciously identified through examining high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, selected area electronic diffraction (SAED) patterns and scanning TEM images of the PQDs. Variable-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the CsPbBr3 PQDs randomly embedded into a frozen solid of methylbenzene were measured in the temperature range of 5-180 K. It is found that both the linewidth and peak position of the measured PL spectra are abnormally almost temperature independent in the temperature range of interest. Some competing mechanisms, such as a competition between the bandgap blue shift induced by thermal lattice expansion and red shift induced by thermal escaping of localized excitons, and a competition between lineshape broadening by phonon scattering and narrowing by thermal escaping of localized excitons, are proposed to interpret the phenomena. Good agreement between the theoretical fitting and the experimental data leads to a state-of-the-art understanding of the temperature-dependent luminescence of the CsPbBr3 PQDs in a solid matrix.
Research on the photoluminescence properties of Cu2+-doped perovskite CsPbCl3 quantum dots

Abstract:CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) quantum dots (QDs) and Cu2+-doped CsPbCl3 QDs with different Cu-to-Pb molar ratios were synthesized via a solvent-based thermal synthesis method. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of these Cu2+-doped CsPbCl3 QDs were also investigated in this study. The results showed that with the increase in the Cl- concentration the surface defects of CsPb(Cl/Br)3 QDs increased, which resulted in an increase in the non-radiative recombination of excitons and weakened the PL intensity. Moreover, Cu2+-doped CsPbCl3 QDs maintained the cubic crystal structure of the initial phases. Owing to the doping of Cu2+ ions, the surface defects of CsPbCl3 QDs were effectively eliminated, which facilitated the excitonic recombination via a radiative pathway. The PL quantum yields (PLQYs) of Cu2+-doped CsPbCl3 QDs were increased to 51%, showing great photostability. From the results, it is believed that Cu:CsPbCl3 QDs can be widely used in optoelectronic devices.
Spectral Fingerprint of Quantum Confinement in Single CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are promising materials for classical and quantum light emission. To understand these outstanding properties, a thorough analysis of the band-edge exciton emission is needed, which is not reachable in ensemble and room-temperature studies because of broadening effects. Here, we report on a cryogenic-temperature study of the photoluminescence of single CsPbBr3 nanocrystals in the intermediate quantum confinement regime. We reveal the size-dependence of the spectral features observed: the bright triplet exciton energy splittings, the trion and biexciton binding energies, and the optical phonon replica spectrum. In addition, we show that bright triplet energy splittings are consistent with a pure exchange model and that the variety of polarization properties and spectra recorded can be rationalized simply by considering the orientation of the emitting dipoles and the populations of the emitting states.

Abstract:We investigate emission characteristics, phonon–phonon, and electron–phonon interactions in a lead-free halide perovskite Cs3Sb2Br9 through temperature-dependent photoluminescence, Raman scattering, and x-ray diffraction measurements. The exciton–optical phonon coupling leads to below bandgap broad emissions, arising from self-trapped excitons recombination. The anomalous temperature dependence of the lowest frequency Raman mode is attributed to the phonon–phonon and electron–phonon interactions. The temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction measurement reveals a minimum in the volume thermal expansion coefficient at around 120 K. We also quantify the quasiharmonic contributions to the phonon frequency shift for all Raman modes.
