Abstract:Ternary metal halides based on Cu(I) and Ag(I) have attracted intensive attention in optoelectronic applications due to their excellent luminescent properties, low toxicity, and robust stability. While the self-trapped excitons (STEs) emission mechanisms of Cu(I) halides are well understood, the STEs in Ag(I) halides remain less thoroughly explored. This study explores the STE emission efficiency within the A 2 AgX 3 (A = Rb, Cs; X = Cl, Br, I) system by identifying three distinct STE states in each material and calculating their configuration coordinate diagrams. We find that the STE emission efficiency in this system is mainly determined by STE stability and influenced by self-trapping and quenching barriers. Moreover, we investigate the impact of structural compactness on emission efficiency and find that the excessive electron-phonon coupling in this system can be reduced by increasing structural compactness. The atomic packing factor is identified as a low-cost and effective descriptor for predicting STE emission efficiency in both Cs 2 AgX 3 and Rb 2 AgX 3 systems. These findings can deepen our understanding of STE behavior in metal halide materials and offer valuable insights for the design of efficient STE luminescent materials.

Abstract:The formation rate of self‐trapped excitons (STEs) is influenced by the trapping depth (Etrap) of the excitons and the phonon energy (Ephonon). The non‐radiative loss of STEs from detrapping back to free‐exciton state is negligible due to the large Etrap. The intersection of STE band and ground state can serve as an non‐radiative loss pathway. Low‐dimensional copper halides having nontoxic elements are attracting increasing attention for their peculiar emission properties. Self‐trapped excitons (STEs) account for their high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) with emission that can stretch across the entire visible spectrum. However, intrinsic factors that influence the formation or loss of the emissive species in low‐dimensional copper halides remain elusive. Here, a comprehensive study on the STE formation dynamics of one‐dimensional CsCu2I3 and zero‐dimensional Cs3Cu2I5 is presented. It is found from STE kinetic analysis that a slower STE formation demonstrated by the 1D structure is not hindered by a potential barrier, but instead related to the number of phonons released in the self‐trapping process. It is further revealed that in 1D CsCu2I3, the non‐radiative recombination of STEs mainly occurs via the intersection between the STE state and the ground state in the configuration coordinate diagram, placing an intrinsic limit on the PLQY at room temperature. These findings show that the STE formation is affected by both the self‐trapping depth and the phonon energy as opposed to a potential barrier in low‐dimensional copper halides. The better understanding of STE formation and recombination processes provide basis for improving design and performance for broadband light emitting devices.

Abstract:Emerging lead‐free metal halides with low toxicity and unparalleled optoelectronic properties have attracted growing research interests, also demonstrating extensive application potentials. Among these, Sb3+‐based all‐inorganic/organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides become a vital group due to the special energy level distribution along with diverse optical properties. However, there remains a gap in understanding the relationship between the crystal structure and the radiation process of involved Sb3+ emission. Herein, the existing reports about Sb3+‐based luminescent metal halides are revisited and their structure–luminescence–application relationship is explored, and it is further established that the triplet self‐trapped excitons (STEs) emission of Sb3+ varies in different crystallographic environments and endows tunable luminescent performance. This work aims to provide constructive strategies in the further exploitation of Sb3+‐based metal halides, and also guides the structural design and photoluminescence tuning of doped metal halide materials.

Abstract:0D hybrid metal halides (0D HMHs) are considered to be promising luminescent emitters. 0D HMHs commonly exhibit self-trapped exciton (STE) emissions originating from the inorganic metal halide anion units. Exploring and utilizing the emission features of the organic cation units in 0D HMHs is highly desired to enrich their optical properties as multifunctional luminescent materials. Here, tunable emissions from organic and inorganic units are successfully achieved in triphenylsulfonium (Ph3 S+ )-based 0D HMHs. Notably, integrated afterglow and STE emissions with adjustable intensities are obtained in (Ph3 S)2 Sn1- x Tex Cl6 (x = 0-1) via the delicate combination of [SnCl6 ]2- and [TeCl6 ]2- . Moreover, such a strategy can be readily extended to develop other HMH materials with intriguing optical properties. As a demonstration, 0D (Ph3 S)2 Zn1- x Mnx Cl4 (x = 0-1) are constructed to achieve integrated afterglow and Mn2+ d-d emissions with high efficiency. Consequently, these novel 0D HMHs with colorful afterglow and STE emissions are applied in multiple anti-counterfeiting applications.

Self-Trapped Excitons in Metal-Halide Perovskites Investigated by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of the formation of self-trapped excitons (STEs) and the associated broadband emission in metal-halide perovskites Cs$_4$SnBr$_6$ and Cs$_2$AgInCl$_6$, using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) with the dielectric-dependent hybrid (DDH) functional. Our approach allows for an accurate description of the excitonic effect and geometry relaxation in the electronic excited states and yields optical gap, STE emission energy, and emission spectra in reasonable agreement with experiments. We point out the significance of considering geometry relaxations in the electronic excited state by showing that the exciton-phonon coupling computed in the ground-state atomic geometry is insufficient to describe the physical properties of STEs. Overall, we find that TDDFT with the DDH hybrid functional is a suitable approach for the study of the formation of STEs in perovskite and provides insights for designing metal-halide perovskites with tailored emission properties.

Pressure-controlled free exciton and self-trapped exciton emission in quasi-one-dimensional hybrid lead bromides

Abstract:Hybrid metal halides represent a novel type of semiconductor light emitters with intriguing excitonic emission properties, including free exciton emission and self-trapped exciton emission. Achieving precise control over these two excitonic emissions in hybrid metal halides is highly desired yet remains challenging. Here, the complete transformation from intrinsically broadband self-trapped exciton emission to distinctively sharp free exciton emission in a quasi-one-dimensional hybrid metal halide (C2H10N2)8[Pb4Br18]·6Br with a ribbon width of n = 4, is successfully achieved based on high-pressure method. During compression, pressure-induced phonon hardening continuously reduces exciton-phonon coupling, therefore suppressing excitonic localization and quenching the original self-trapped exciton emission. Notably, further compression triggers excitonic delocalization to induce intense free exciton emission, accompanied with reduced carrier effective masses and improved charge distribution. Controlled high-pressure investigations indicate that the ribbon width of n > 2 is necessary to realize excitonic delocalization and generate free exciton emissions in similar quasi-one-dimensional hybrid metal halides. This work presents an important photophysical process of excitonic transitions from self-trapped exciton emission to free exciton emission in quasi-one-dimensional hybrid metal halides without chemical regulation, promoting the rational synthesis of hybrid metal halides with desired excitonic emissions.

Abstract:Self-trapping excitons (STEs) emission in metal halides has been a matter of interest, correlating with the strength of electron-phonon coupling in the lattice, which are usually caused by ions with ns2 electronic structure. In this work, Sb3+/Te4+ ions doped Zn-based halide single crystals (SCs) with two STEs emissions have been synthesized and the possibility of its anti-counterfeiting application was explored. Further, the relationship between the strength of electron-phonon coupling and photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) for STEs in a series of metal halides has been studied. And the semi-empirical range of the Huang-Rhys factors (S) for metal halides with excellent photoluminescence (PL) property has been summarized. This work provides ideas for further research into the relationship between luminescence performance and electron-phonon coupling of metal halides, and also provides a reference for designing the metal halides with high PLQYs.

Abstract:Zero-dimensional Cs3Cu2X5 (X=Cl, Br, or I), the intensively studied light-emitting materials, generally exhibit single-band emissions from intrinsic self-trapped excitons (STEs), while defect-induced (extrinsic) STEs were considered nonemissive. In addition, the stronger electron-phonon coupling for extrinsic STE could shift the extrinsic STE band to intersect with the ground state in the configuration coordinate diagram, acting as a nonradiative pathway. This explains the vanishment of extrinsic STE emission at room temperature and the reported low photoluminescence quantum yields (<50%). With growing efforts to obtain multiple-band emitters, our insights into the emission mechanisms of intrinsic and extrinsic STEs provide valuable bases for further material engineering.

Abstract:Multi-metallic halides of group IA and IB metals are emerged as a new class of color tunable emitters. While chalcogenides and perovskites are extensively studied, these families of materials are little explored. In comparison, herein, lead and cadmium free bimetallic Cs-Ag-X (X = Cl, Br, I) halides are reported where the larger ion Ag+ helped in incorporating all the halide ions which in turn tune their emission color in spanning from 397 nm (violet) to 820 nm (near infrared) as a function of their composition. The synthesis method adopted here is the solvent free ball milling of respective halides of Cs and Ag and took the record shortest time and in bulk scale. From decay lifetimes, emissions from these bimetallic halides are found as a result of fast recombination of self-trapped excitons, which exhibited not only reasonably high quantum yield in the range of 17-68% but also excellent stability to air and moisture under ambient conditions. These also show wide Stokes shift with relatively longer decay lifetimes ranging above the exciton and below the surface trap or dopant induced emissions of inorganic semiconductors, indicating a new class of materials having unique identity of their optical behaviors.

Abstract:Lead-free alkali halides have gained increasing attention owing to their desired optoelectronic properties across a variety of light-emitting applications. However, state-of-the-art alkali halide emitters commonly are bulky crystals functionalized with highly toxic elemental doping, hindering their integration into emerging flexible, wearable and large-area optoelectronic devices. Herein, we have developed environmental friendly and solution-processable alkali halide nanocrystals that exhibit intense self-trapped emission facilitated by Sn 2+ ionic doping. We find that the presence of Sn 2+ -interstitial leads to the tilting of cubic structures of RbI and thus triggers the self-trapped emission. The resultant tin( II )-doped RbI and Rb x Cs 1− x I nanocrystals display an impressive maximum photoluminescence quantum yield of 91.9% and exhibit remarkable stability under ambient conditions. These findings pave the way for a new class of bright, solution-processable alkali halides, with diverse applications such as energy down conversion and flexible scintillation technologies.

Abstract:CsCu2I3 and Cs3Cu2I5 exhibiting self‐trapped exciton emission are attractive for light‐emitting applications. Carrier dynamics of these vapor deposited materials are examined by transient absorption and streak camera measurements. CsCu2I3 exhibits free exciton emission and noticeable changes in width and position of self‐trapped exciton emission in the streak camera results which are not observed in Cs3Cu2I5. Highly photoluminescent, lead‐free perovskites are of interest for displays and solid‐state light‐emitting devices. In this report, streak camera‐based time‐resolved emission and transient absorption spanning visible to deep‐ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths are utilized to study self‐trapped and free exciton dynamics in vacuum‐deposited cesium copper halide thin films of CsCu2I3 and Cs3Cu2I5. Self‐trapped exciton emission of CsCu2I3 exhibits more noticeable changes with time in the peak position and width than Cs3Cu2I5. UV‐to‐blue emission is detectable for both compositions, where free exciton emission is distinct for CsCu2I3. Transient absorption shows loss of ground‐state bleach signals at early time delays for both, and the bleach signal shifts toward higher energy as time delay increases, likely due to strains induced by the newly created self‐trapped excitons. Global analysis performed on the transient absorption results yields time constants in these materials that build an overall dynamic scheme. This work aids in building a complete picture regarding light emission in these promising materials.

Lattice distortion enhanced self-trapped excitons emission in antimony halide crystalline clusters

Abstract:Zero-dimensional perovskite materials, characterized by broadband emission caused by self-trapped excitons, are promising materials for stimuli-responsive and photo-writeable encryption. However, existing research is focused on the effects of structural phase transitions on photophysical properties, and lacks in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of self-trapped excitons emission. Here, we demonstrate that the dehydration reaction in zero-dimensional antimony halide clusters significantly enhances the self-trapped excitons emission without inducing structural phase transition, resulting in a substantial increase in photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield from 3.5% to 91.4%. In-situ X-ray diffraction and PL techniques were employed to shed light on the relationship between the crystal structure and radiative recombination, demonstrating the introduction of rich lattice distortion during the dehydration process. Temperature-dependent PL spectra and transient absorption spectra suggest that the lattice distortion causes the moderate electron-phonon coupling strength and high exciton binding energy, facilitating self-trapped excitons to relax from the non-radiative recombination singlet state to the radiative recombination triplet state, corresponding to the enhanced emission intensity. As a proof of concept, several switchable PL applications have been established in scenarios such as anti-counterfeiting, rewritable luminescent paper, and humidity sensing. This finding elucidates the emission mechanism of self-trapped excitons and provides a novel avenue for designing switchable luminescent materials.

Abstract:Self-trapped exciton (STE) luminescence, typically associated with structural deformation of excited states, has attracted significant attention in metal halide materials recently. However, the mechanism of multiexciton STE emissions in certain metal halide crystals remains largely unexplored. This study investigates dual luminescence emissions in HCOO- doped Cs3Cu2I5 single crystals using transient and steady-state spectroscopy. The dual emissions are attributed to intrinsic STE luminescence originating from the host lattice and extrinsic STE luminescence induced by external dopants, respectively, each of which can be triggered independently at distinct energy levels. Theoretical calculations reveal that multiexciton emission originates from structural distortion of the host and dopant STEs within the 0D lattice in their respective excited states. By meticulously tuning the excitation wavelength and selectively exciting different STEs, the dynamic alteration of color change in Cs3Cu2I5:HCOO- crystals is demonstrated. Ultimately, owing to an extraordinarily high photoluminescence quantum yield (99.01%) and a diminished degree of self-absorption in Cs3Cu2I5:HCOO- crystals, they exhibit remarkable X-ray scintillation characteristics with light yield being improved by 5.4 times as compared to that of pristine Cs3Cu2I5 crystals, opening up exciting avenues for achieving low-dose X-ray detection and imaging.

Abstract:All-inorganic zero-dimensional (0D) metal halides are highly attractive for optoelectronic applications, but rational control over the temperature dependence of luminescence in these materials remains an unfulfilled task. This study presents an investigation of thermo-responsive luminescence in doped Cs2ZnCl4 crystals. Density functional theory calculations reveal a thermal elevation of the orbital state of the dopant ions originating from distortion of the local coordination polyhedron, leading to a blueshift of the self-trapped exciton (STE) emissions. By examining a series of Cs2ZnCl4 crystals doped with Sb3+, Te4+, Cu+, and Mn2+, we quantitatively address the polyhedral distortion and its effect on the luminescence properties. Owing to the 0D nature of the host material, we further synthesize Sb3+/Mn2+ co-doped Cs2ZnCl4 with dual emissions that display distinct luminescence responses to thermal stimuli. The advances in these optical materials enable a new tactic to construct tunable thermochromic luminescence for applications such as thermal sensing and optical encryption.
