Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 1 × 8 optical phased array (OPA) for one dimensional beam steering based on a 16 × 16 Benes-type silicon optical switch. The device shows a far-field pattern with 0.32° beam width, revealing the new application potential for the optical switch as a multi-functional platform.

Abstract:An optical switch based on a scanning mirror was designed in this paper. The optical switch is pro-grammable and controlled by an embedded Linux system that switches between the fiber array channels onthe UI of the touch display. Meanwhile, the switching sequence and residence time of the optical switch canbe preset. In addition, the optical switch can be self-calibrated to obtain the maximum output power of eachchannel. The principle of the optical switch is analyzed and the performance of the optical switch is tested ex-perimentally. The experimental results show that the average insertion loss is less than 17 dB for the singlemode fiber array, the average crosstalk between adjacent channels is more than 30 dB, and the switching time between the adjacent channel is less than 1.3 ms. The average insertion loss is less than 2.4 dB for the multi-mode fiber array. It has the advantages of low loss, low delay, high precision, good stability, high repeatabil-ity, low cross-talk between the adjacent channel, and good man-machine interaction for the application of theWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and multi-channel optical waveguide sensors test device

Abstract:We demonstrate a reconfigurable 4 × 4 silicon optical switch network by using an architecture of Half-Crossbar. It has the advantage of flexible scalability and utilizes fewer elements. The proposed switch is composed of six dual-microring resonators tuned by the thermo-optic effect. The footprint is only 176 μm × 632 μm. At the wavelength of 1557 nm, the average insertion loss is smaller than 2.5 dB according to the results of all 24 switching states. Its rising response time is about 4.9 μs. The experiment verified the optical data transmission ability of the proposed switch network.

Abstract:A novel design scheme for digital optical switch with high extinction ratio by employing S curve waveguide at the end of the Y branch is proposed.Higher extinction ratio than that of the device without S curve waveguide is obtained by applying certain synchronous voltage to the Y branch and the curve electrode of the S curve waveguide.Finite Difference Beam Propagation Method(FDBPM) is used to simulate the performance of the design,and the results show that the extinction ratio can exceed-25 dB with the switch voltage of about 8 V at 1.55 μm.

Abstract:To achieve complex functionality with small size, weight and power, photonic integrated circuits (PIC) are expanded from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D). In this paper, a new design for a scalable 3D silicon optical switch is proposed. Key elements, including silicon electro-optic switches, crossings, and interlayer transitions are used to define and optimize the 3D optical switching network. The architecture is based on CLOS architecture, which can be extended to multiple layers. Silicon-based two- and three-layer switches are carefully designed and analyzed as an example based on the transfer matrix technique (TMT). In a 4×4 two-layer optical switch, the average insertion loss at 1550 nm wavelength is ∼4.16 dB, and ∼3.69 dB for the “all-cross” and “all-bar” states, respectively. In a 4×4 three-layer optical switch, the average insertion loss at 1550 nm wavelength is ∼5.96 dB, and ∼5.41 dB for the “all-cross” and “all-bar” states, respectively. The architecture also shows the scalability of both the port number and the layer number. The scalable 3D architecture proposed could improve the interconnect density twice and thrice in a single-layer design.

Abstract:We report on an experimental 3 x 3 thermo-optical switch on silicon on insulator. By controlling a single combined phase shifter, light from any input waveguide can be directed to any output waveguide, showing a simple control method and highly integrated structure as compared to the conventional multiway optical switches. Furthermore, the proposed optical switch can be generalized to be a 1 x N and N x N optical switch without an extra phase shifter. The switch is fabricated by complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology. By experiment, full 3 x 3 switching functionality is demonstrated at a wavelength of 1.55 mu m, with an average cross talk of -11.1 dB and a power consumption of 97.5 mW. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an integrated optical switch that leverages an optical phased array (OPA) and an on-chip metalens, highlighting its potential for efficient and scalable beam switching across multiple ports within a compact footprint. The device consists of an input multimode interference (MMI) coupler, a phase modulator (PM) array, a beam-transformation region featuring an on-chip metalens layer, and a tapered waveguide array serving as the output ports. The PM array, engineered to effectively manipulate multiple phases for a waveguide array using a single voltage, utilizes metal strips of varying lengths to streamline operation. The on-chip metalens, characterized by varying slot lengths, facilitates the wavefront manipulation of the fast Fourier transform, resulting in beam deflection with a focusing length of 20 μm. The simulated validation of the proposed compact optical switch demonstrated efficient beam deflection, yielding a 1 × 8 beam switching at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Combinations of diverse OPAs and metalens configurations resulted in potential scalability, allowing for the realization of optical switches with pathway numbers ranging from 4 to 16. This development of a metalens-assisted optical switch on a compact chip presents significant practical implications for enhancing data transmission efficiency and scalability in photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:A kind of architecture of optical steering of a phased-array antenna (PAA) based on a fast optical delay-line switch is proposed and experimentally studied. A 4-bit fast optical delay-line switch with switching speed of less than 30 mu s is constructed using cascaded solid-state optical switches. A distributed feedback laser integrated with electro-absorption modulator is employed for and delivery. Our experimental system of transporting X-band microwave signals over one antenna element shows a signal-to-noise ratio better than 55 dB and low crosstalk of less than -50 dB. The structure features a compact design, a low-cost solution, a fast tilting speed, and true-time-delay beam steering. The proposed scheme of optical steering is very promising for wideband X-band PAA applications. (c) 2006 Wiley periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:We report a low-cost non-silicon-based fiber optic switch featuring a novel design of reflection cell, which is capable of ±5V pulse operation and self-latching. The switch prototypes were measured to have a switch time of 2.6ms, return loss of −54dB and a low insertion loss. Enabling technology is precision electrical discharge machining. The dynamic process of switching was analyzed using an FEA software ANSYS for design optimization. A reasonable agreement was obtained between the measurement and calculated results. The switch is scalable to 8×8 or above and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.

Abstract:We demonstrate a silicon $1 imes 64$ optical phased array by using carrier-depletion-based phase shifters. The 5-mm-long phase shifter exhibits an electro-optic bandwidth of 700 MHz, a modulation efficiency of 2.3 V.cm, and an ultra-low power consumption of < 0.45 nW/$oldsymbol {pi }$ . A steering range of ±18° is realized in the phased-array axis by tuning the phase of each antenna. Besides, the beam steering in the other (wavelength-controlled) axis by tuning the wavelength achieves a dispersion efficiency of 0.17° /nm. Although the carrier-depletion effect induces a nonuniform optical amplitude distribution among the antenna array, the OPA chip is still able to form high-quality far-field beam patterns with side lobe suppression ratios of $oldsymbol {sim }10$ dB. Our measurement and simulation results indicate that the carrier-depletion-based OPA is a promising candidate for future high-speed and power-efficient solid-state Lidars.

Abstract:The 2 mu m waveband, specifically near 1.9 mu m, is an imperative resource that could possibly be exploited in future communications systems. This is due to the promising infrastructural developments at the wavelength region (hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber, thulium-doped fiber amplifier) near 1.9 mu m. In this work, we report the 1 x N selector switch based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers operating near the 1.9 mu m wavelength region. As an elementary cell ( N = 2), an insertion loss as low as 1.1 dB, P-pi of 23 mW, 10-90% switching time of lower than 38 mu s and a crosstalk of lower than -25 dB from 1880 to 1955 nm has been determined. In order to prove scalability, the 1 x 8 switch ( N = 8) is demonstrated, indicating crosstalk as low as -21 dB, considering all possible switching configurations across the abovementioned wavelength region. Insertion loss levels are examined.

Abstract:We demonstrate 32-channel dispersive optical phased arrays on a Si3N4-on-SOI integration platform. The phase difference is introduced by the arrayed waveguide. Beam steering in phased-array direction with an aliasing-free range of 22.4 degrees and free spectrum ranges of similar to 60 nm and similar to 6 nm is achieved. Meanwhile, the main lobe is deflected simultaneously by 19.67 degrees in the other direction by tuning the wavelength from 1500 nm to 1630 nm. Measurement results show that the dispersive optical phased array provides a compact, low-power and massively parallel solution for LiDAR applications.
