Abstract:In this paper, we present a highly sensitive inline fiber curvature sensor based on an eccentric core fiber (ECF) and off-axis air cavity Fabry-Pérot interferometer (OACFPI). This ECF-based bending sensor is fabricated by fusion-splicing a section of ECF between a single-mode fiber and an off-axis air cavity fiber. Due to the location of the core in the ECF, a bend applied to the ECF-based OACFPI leads to elongation or shortening of the optical path length in the air cavity, which makes the system suitable for bending measurement. To analyze bending characteristics, three ECFs with different eccentric core locations are investigated separately. In addition, a swept source is employed for measurement. The experimental results demonstrate that, the bending sensitivities of the sensors at the two opposite most-sensitive directions are 0.241 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 1), 0.131 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 2), and 0.0807 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathrm {\mathbf {-1 }}}$ (sensor 3), and −0.245 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 1), −0.156 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 2), and −0.077 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 3). The temperature sensitivities of the sensors are 0.84 pm/°C, 0.92 pm/°C, and 0.94 pm/°C, respectively. The proposed sensors are compact and versatile, and are expected to have potential applications in biomedical sensing.
Curvature and angle sensor based on LP 21 mode reflected by a four-mode fiber Bragg grating

Abstract:A fiber curvature and angle sensor based on LP21 mode reflected by a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed in a four modes fiber (FMF) has been developed. Modal coupling efficiency was calculated as a function of curvature radius, and LP21-LP01 coupling was revealed to be more sensitive to fiber bending compared with LP11-LP01 and LP02-LP01 coupling. Simulation analysis of mode electric field distribution in a bent FMF demonstrated that modal coupling efficiency was consistent with an overlapping integral, i.e., an overlapping area between the two involved modes. A verification experiment was carried out and the signal intensity of LP21-LP01 coupling first decreased and then increased during bending, keeping consistent with the calculation results. The sensitivity is −46.13 and 38.15 dB/ $ ext{m}^{-{1}}$ in the curvature range of 3.96–4.20 and 4.26–4.49 $ ext{m}^{-{1}}$ , respectively. The sensor also brings about an angle sensitivity with a maximum difference of 12.03 dB in the angle of $0- 2pi $ . Due to the simple structure, ease of fabrication, and reliable response performance, the proposed sensor is believed to have potential application prospects in curvature and angle detection fields.

Abstract:A sensitivity-enhanced two-dimensional bending sensor using four-core fiber (FCF) transition to realized single-channel demodulation of seven-core fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed. A section of FCF was added between the single-mode fiber (SMF) and the seven-core fiber (SCF), and the thermal diffusion technology (TDT) was used so that the signal of the SMF could be transmitted to the three side cores of the SCF through the FCF. Then, a 45° reflective circular cone (45° RCC) is fabricated at the end of the SCF, enabling the coupling of the symmetrical side core signals of the SCF. By inscribing the FBGs with different reflection wavelengths on the side cores of the SCF, the signals of each side core can be distinguished during single-channel demodulation. Monitoring the reflection wavelength shifts of the FBGs on the SCF can realize two-dimensional bending measurements. Furthermore, through the differential operation of the symmetrical side cores, the bending sensitivity can be enhanced while eliminating temperature crosstalk. The proposed sensor with high integration, high sensitivity, and reduced crosstalk, is expected to be applied in the field of structural inspection or interventional medical treatment.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensor for curvature measurements. Two gratings are inscribed through the protective coating in a specialty optical fiber using focused femtosecond laser pulses and point-by-point direct writing technology. One grating is inscribed on the central core adjacent to an air channel, while the other is inscribed on the eccentric core. The bending characteristics of the two-core fiber strongly depend on the bending direction due to the asymmetry of the fiber cores. A bending sensitivity of 58 pm/m−1 is achieved by the FBG in the eccentric fiber core over the curvature range of 0–50 m−1. Temperature and humidity cross-sensitivity could be significantly reduced by analyzing the differences in peak shifts between the two gratings. The sensor features a large sensing range and good robustness due to the presence of its protective buffer coating, which makes it a good candidate for curvature sensing in engineering fields.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a compact bending sensor. The head of the sensor is only 0.8 mm in length, and consists of an abrupt biconical fiber taper formed using a conventional fusion splicer, in which a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is inscribed using a femtosecond laser. The biconical taper incorporating the FBG can couple light from the cladding to the backward-propagating core mode, which realizes an interferometer in reflection-mode. Bending of the structure can be detected from the contrast change of interference fringes. A configuration to measure curvature is investigated to demonstrate the sensing characteristics. The temperature cross-sensitivity of the sensor is studied, and the results demonstrate that it is insensitive to temperature.

Abstract:A directionally discriminable curvature sensor based on a chirped fiber Bragg grating Fabry–Perot interferometer (CFBG-FPI) is proposed and demonstrated by staggering two CFBGs in parallel in the fiber core with femtosecond laser point-by-point technology. The experimental results show that the light intensity of the interference dip tends to become stronger and weaker in two opposite bending directions, respectively, with a maximum sensitivity of 4.93 dB/m−1. This sensor has a temperature sensitivity of 2.31 × 10−4 dB/°C resulting in a cross-sensitivity as low as approximately 4.7 × 10−5 m−1/°C. The sensor is simple to manufacture, compact, and can be cascaded by multiple sensors to achieve multi-point detection, which is expected to play an important application in structural health detection.

Abstract:In this letter, a highly sensitive bending sensor based on an embedded multimode D-shaped long period fiber grating (EMD-LPFG) is proposed. The novel sensor is applied to carry out vector bending measurement. The proposed LPFG is fabricated by polishing on the prepared structure which is formed by periodically splicing between single mode fiber (SMF) and multimode fiber (MMF). Since the cross section of the embedded MMF is D-shaped, we named it EMD-LPFG. Due to the asymmetric modulation of the refractive index on the fiber by the CO2 laser, the sensor has the ability to distinguish the bending directions, and the MMFs provide higher bending response. The experimental transmission spectrum can match the simulation results well. The experimental results show that the average bending sensitivities in three orthogonal directions are 70.21 nm/m-1 (0°), 9.75 nm/m-1 (90°), -12.04 nm/m-1 (180°) and 9.98 nm/m-1 (270°), respectively. Meanwhile, the temperature sensitivity is 30 pm/°C in the range of 25 °C to 75 °C. According to the ultra-compact structure with the total length of 2.5 mm, high bending sensitivity and ability to distinguish the bending direction, the novel sensor has potential in bending measurement.

Abstract:A novel fiber-optic bending sensor based upon the propagation of LP21 mode is demonstrated. The sensor, comprised of an S-bend fiber on an elastic film, measures LP21 mode specklegram rotation, which increments linearly with bending angle by the stress-optic effect. The sensor is capable of experimentally achieving a sensitivity as high as 4.13 rad/m(-1). The theoretical analysis of the sensor, which is a combination of fiber coupled-mode theory and elastic-optic theory, validates the accuracy of the sensor. The sensor is also shown to be temperature-immune, and can detect both bending direction and bending angle with a large dynamic range. Furthermore, the sensor implementation incorporates inexpensive single-mode fiber at 650 nm for few-mode operation, enabling low-loss transmission and compatibility with existing interfaces.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity bending sensor based on dual-dip long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) in a single-mode fiber is proposed. The length of the gratings is very short only 7.2 mm. The asymmetric perturbation in fiber is generated during the fabrication, which makes the dual-dip LPFGs show different bending sensing characteristics at opposite directions. Meanwhile, the highest bending sensitivity of -35.91 nm/m- 1 and -20.74 dB/m-1 can be obtained at bending directions of 0 degrees and 180 degrees, respectively. Furthermore, the torsion and temperature sensing characteristics are investigated experimentally. The torsion sensitivities follow sine function showing potential for directional sensing. The temperature sensitivities are 41.9 p.m./degrees C and 45.1 p.m./degrees C are close, which can eliminate the cross-sensitivity to temperature.

Abstract:We present a high-resolution simultaneous strain and temperature measurement scheme using pi-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating written in PANDA-type polarization maintaining fiber. Two optical parameters, the Bragg frequency and the birefringence-introduced frequency difference, are measured to perform the discrimination of strain and temperature. A double-sideband interrogation method together with a cross-feedback technique is introduced, which significantly reduces the measurement error in birefringence-introduced frequency difference, and hence improves the sensing resolution of strain and temperature. In the demonstration experiment, simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature with resolutions of 0.018 mu is an element of and 0.0014 degrees C respectively is realized.

Abstract:A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) structure based on an eccentric core fiber (ECF) and a single-mode fiber (SMF) was proposed and experimentally demonstrated for distinguishing the bending effect from the axial strain effect and measuring the pure directional bending. The structure is fabricated by writing a FBG on the fusion splice junction between an ECF and a SMF. The FBG formed on the ECF-SMF junction has two different resonant peaks because of the different refractive indices of the two fibers. The peak relating to the ECF is sensitive to both directional bending and axial strain, while the peak corresponding to the SMF is only sensitive to strain. By using the unique FBG structure, one can directly know whether a bending is accompanied by an axial strain, and can obtain both the direction and curvature of the bending. Experimental results show that the bending sensitivities of the FBG in the ECF part are 49.3 and 50.3 ${\rm{pm}}/{{\rm{m}}^{ - 1}}$ at directions of 0 and 180, respectively, and the strain sensitivities of the FBG in the ECF and SMF are 0.74 and 0.70 pm/, respectively.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity fiber optic strain sensor based on chirped fiber Bragg grating-Fabry Perot interferometer (CFBG-FPI) and vernier effect is proposed and has been demonstrated to have a strain sensitivity of 123.8 pm. With femtosecond laser direct writing technology, two pairs of CFBGs with the same reflectivity, length, chirp rate and center wavelength are inscribed inside the single-mode fiber core, forming two separated CFBG-FPIs. Combined with the vernier effect principle, the interferometric cavity lengths of the two CFBG-FPIs were designed at about 1.7 mm and 1.68 mm as the reference arm and sensing arm, respectively, to form the vernier effect system, and the spacing between the reference arm and the sensing arm was 1 m. Experimental results show that in this vernier effect system, the strain sensitivity gain due to the vernier effect reaches a staggering 91-fold relative to a single CFBG-FPI, resulting in an ultra-high sensitivity of 123.8 pm. In addition to being compact and convenient to manufacture, the sensor exhibits a low temperature cross-sensitivity down to 0.14 C. The many advantages make this sensor extremely promising for high-precision strain measurement applications.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a novel bamboo-shaped interference sensor based on multistage photonic-band gap microstructured fiber (PBG-MF) and single-mode fiber (SMF) to build the cascaded Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). Due to the honeycomb space inside the PBG-MF, a higher extinction ratio (ER) is obtained in the reflection spectrum of the interferometer, which is conducive to improving the detection limit (DL) and resolution of the sensor. The bending direction can be identified by the structure proposed in this letter. Maximum curvature sensitivity is 991 pm/m -1 in the convex direction. Maximum curvature sensitivity is -1118 pm/m -1 in the concave direction. The sensor has the advantages of small size, high sensitivity, and high package stability. It is particularly suitable for ultra-short distance curvature sensing, such as the joints of the human body.
Parallel Farby–Perot Interferometers in an Etched Multicore Fiber for Vector Bending Measurements

Abstract:Vector bending sensors can be utilized to detect the bending curvature and direction, which is essential for various applications such as structural health monitoring, mechanical deformation measurement, and shape sensing. In this work, we demonstrate a temperature-insensitive vector bending sensor via parallel Farby–Perot interferometers (FPIs) fabricated by etching and splicing a multicore fiber (MCF). The parallel FPIs made in this simple and effective way exhibit significant interferometric visibility with a fringe contrast over 20 dB in the reflection spectra, which is 6 dB larger than the previous MCF-based FPIs. And such a device exhibits a curvature sensitivity of 0.207 nm/m−1 with strong bending-direction discrimination. The curvature magnitude and orientation angle can be reconstructed through the dip wavelength shifts in two off-diagonal outer-core FPIs. The reconstruction results of nine randomly selected pairs of bending magnitudes and directions show that the average relative error of magnitude is ~4.5%, and the average absolute error of orientation angle is less than 2.0°. Furthermore, the proposed bending sensor is temperature-insensitive, with temperature at a lower sensitivity than 10 pm/°C. The fabrication simplicity, high interferometric visibility, compactness, and temperature insensitivity of the device may accelerate MCF-based FPI applications.
Fiber Bending Sensor with Turning Point in a Multimode Fiber Peanut-Like Structure

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated a bending sensor based on Michelson interferometer (MI). The sensor was fabricated by fusion splicing single-mode fiber (SMF) and multimode fiber (MMF) spheres. The improved end-face packaging scheme was adopted to realize the measurement of bending. The advantage of MMF numerical aperture increases the mode field diameter and the number of modes. Fiber bending induces transition between modes, resulting in the generation and fade of fiber modes, achieving the emergence of bending turning points (BTPs). The BTP is defined as the point where the direction of interference dip shift changes due to fiber bending. By observing the direction of interference dip shift during bending, the degree of bending can be intuitively estimated. The simulation results verify the generation and fade of excited modes in the bending MMF peanut-like structure, which are in good agreement with the experimental results. When the sensor is installed in parallel and titled ways, due to the uneven force of the plate in the bending state, it shows the differences in sensitivity, BTP and initial bending response. Further, the BTP can be roughly adjusted by the MMF core diameter, and the deviation of the sensitivity is reflected in the length of the interference arm. Besides, compact size, low cost and low hysteresis make the sensor more competitive in harsh environment applications.
Multi-parameter sensor based on cascaded multicore FBGs and an FPI for bending, temperature and pressure measurements

Abstract:A multi-parameter sensor based on cascaded multi-core fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) is proposed. The sensor consists of a single-mode fiber (SMF), a four-core fiber (FCF), and a hollow fiber (HCF) filled with polydimethylsiloxane. The HCF is fused at the end of the FCF to form an FPI. Through thermal diffusion technology (TDT), the all-fiber single-channel measurement of the sensor is realized. The FCF FBGs have a maximum sensitivity of 96.33 pm/m −1 for vector bending and 9.8 pm/°C for temperature. The FPI is capable of measuring temperature and pressure with sensitivities of 1621.2 pm/°C and 6500.0 pm/MPa, respectively. Consequently, a set of wavelength shift equations is derived to simultaneously measure vector bending, temperature, and pressure. The proposed multi-parameter sensor offers the advantages of high integration and reduced cross-talk, making it a promising candidate for applications such as environmental monitoring, structural health monitoring, and wearable artificial electronics.

Abstract:A simultaneous strain and directional bend sensor based on an in-fiber dual air-cavity Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) is presented and demonstrated. The hybrid structure is composed of a fraction of dual side-hole fiber fusion spliced in between a seven-core fiber and a multimode fiber. The bending sensitivities of the two air-cavity FPIs at two opposite most sensitive directions are 120.5 pm/ $\text{m}^{-1}$ and −122 pm/ $\text{m}^{-1}$ , 110.4 pm/ $\text{m}^{-1}$ , and −121.1 pm/ $\text{m}^{-1}$ , respectively. The strain sensitivities of the two FPIs are 1.59 pm/ $\mu \varepsilon $ and 1.52 pm/ $\mu \varepsilon $ , respectively. By using the method of difference between the two mutually independent air-cavity FPIs, the highest bending sensitivities can be improved to be 242.5 pm/ $\text{m}^{-1}$ and −231.5 pm/ $\text{m}^{-1}$ , respectively, and the axial strain effect can be eliminated simultaneously.

Abstract:We demonstrated femtosecond laser inscription of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in a twin-core few-mode fiber (TC-FMF) for directional bend sensing. An FBG was selectively inscribed in one core of the TC-FMF by using an 800 nm femtosecond laser through a phase mask. Three resonance peaks at the wavelengths of 1549.05, 1547.65, and 1546.08 nm were observed in the reflection spectrum of the TC-FM FBG, and were generated by the LP01 mode resonance, LP01LP11 mode cross-coupling resonance, and LP11 mode resonance, respectively. Moreover, the TC-FM FBG exhibited the capability of directional bend sensing and achieved a maximum bend sensitivity of 37.41 pmm1. Hence, the proposed TC-FM FBG directional bend sensors could further be developed as promising solutions for detecting vectorial seismic or acoustic waves and 3-D shape sensing.

Abstract:A novel two-parameter fiber sensor has been demonstrated, consisting of D-shaped composite fiber gratings (DCFG) which includes long period fiber grating (LPFG) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed on D-shaped fiber. LPFG is inscribed on the side of D-shaped fiber by a high-frequency CO2 laser. On account of the asymmetry of the structure in 90° and 270° and refractive index modulation (RIM) in 0° and 180°, the sensor can recognize the bending directions. In the theory, it is proved that by adjusting the thickness of D-shaped fiber, the bending sensitivity can be enhanced in 90° and 270° directions. In the experiments, the fiber sensor achieves the sensitivity of curvature up to 13.70 nm/m−1, which is nearly two times as the similar structure without D-shaped fiber. The curvature and temperature sensitivities of LPFG and FBG are different in DCFG, so the proposed sensor can realize simultaneously measurement of curvature vector and temperature.
