Abstract:In this work, the cathode materials with and without Ti doping were synthesized by the novel sol-gel method with n-butyl titanate as the Ti source. The Ti4+ ions were atomic-level mixed in the liquid precursor to substitute in integral [Ni0.4Mn0.4Fe0.2] site, which will maintain the optimal ratio of Ni/Mn. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) refinements demonstrated that the Ti doping suppressed the impurity formation of NiO, as well as enlarged the inter slab diastance (parameter c) for improving the Na+ diffusion coefficient and conductivity. It was confirmed by XRD patterns and the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) that the Na[Ni0.4Mn0.4Fe0.2](0.95)Ti0.05O2 was more stable than NaNi0.4Mn0.4Fe0.2O2 in ambient atmospheres. The cycle performance of the Na[Ni0.4Mn0.4Fe0.2O2](0.95)Ti0.05O2 showed the high capacity retention of 83.8% after 200 cycles at 1.0C, while the capacity retention of the bare NaNi0.4Mn0.4Fe0.2O2 was only 69.6% under the same conditions. Moreover, the Na[Ni0.4Mn0.4Fe0.2](0.95)Ti0.05O2 sample exhibited excellent discharge rate-capacities of 160.7, 132.1, 125.1, 120.9, 114.7 and 99.6 mAh.g(-1) at 0.1C, 0.2C, 0.5C, 1.0C, 2.0C and 5.0C, respectively (1C = 140 mA.g(-1)). In addition, the ex situ XRD results showed the substitution of Ti can eliminate the detrimental and irreversible multiphase transformation of the P3 to O3 phase, which was usually observed in NaNi0.4Mn0.4Fe0.2O2 during the discharge process. It is expected that the results from present work can be used for opening new insight into the contrivance and creation of applicable transition metal oxide cathode materials for high-performance.
