Abstract:In this work, one-pot synthesis of biofuel-valerolactone (GVL) and valeric acid (VA) from biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) are highly selectively produced on a series of robust Pd-nanoparticle catalysts. These fine Pd nanoparticles are controllably synthesized and confined in the mesoporous channel of MCM-41-derived supports via a green solvent CO2-assited method. A combination analysis tools are used to study physical properties and elucidate the relationship between the structure and performances. The catalytic results display 5 wt% Pd/AlMCM-41 exhibits the best performances of 88.5% GVL yield at the perfect conversion of LA. Moreover, without the isolation of GVL intermediate, it can also efficiently catalyze the one-pot conversion of LA to VA with 45.1% yield. Besides, Pd-nanoparticle catalysts maintain stable structure and good catalytic performances over several runs.

Abstract:γ-Valerolactone (GVL) is one of a promising and versatile platform compounds, derived from renewable biomass, that could be widely used as key raw materials for the production of high value-added chemicals and energy fuels. Here, we report the oriented transformation of GVL into gasoline range hydrocarbons through an integrated two-stage fixed-bed catalytic system. The catalytic upgrading strategy involved the GVL feeds converting to butene isomers mixture and CO2 by ring-opening and decarboxylation without use of external H2 over SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst, coupled with the oligomerization of butene isomers intermediates to gasoline fuels over the nano-HZSM-5 catalyst. This integrated two-stage processes could greatly simplify the products separation, avoid the incompatibility of their reaction conditions, and effectively improve the catalytic stability. The selectivity and yield for target C5−12 gasoline range fuels was high as 82.2 % and 58.7 %, respectively, and no obvious deactivation was observed with time on stream of 50 h.

Abstract:Although considerable progress has been made in carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation to various C1 chemicals, it is still a great challenge to synthesize value-added products with two or more carbons, such as gasoline, directly from CO2 because of the extreme inertness of CO2 and a high C–C coupling barrier. Here we present a bifunctional catalyst composed of reducible indium oxides (In2O3) and zeolites that yields a high selectivity to gasoline-range hydrocarbons (78.6%) with a very low methane selectivity (1%). The oxygen vacancies on the In2O3 surfaces activate CO2 and hydrogen to form methanol, and C−C coupling subsequently occurs inside zeolite pores to produce gasoline-range hydrocarbons with a high octane number. The proximity of these two components plays a crucial role in suppressing the undesired reverse water gas shift reaction and giving a high selectivity for gasoline-range hydrocarbons. Moreover, the pellet catalyst exhibits a much better performance during an industry-relevant test, which suggests promising prospects for industrial applications.

Abstract:γ-Valerolactone (GVL) as a sustainable platform compound could be converted to renewable fuels and chemicals, whereas directly converting GVL to target products remains still the challenge. In this work, we report an amorphous SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst with adjustable acidity, which presented an excellent selectivity of 97.5 % butene at GVL conversion of 99.5 %, and remained an outstanding stability for 50 h. Appropriate weak and strong acid sites were the key for the ring-opening of GVL. Lower acid sites facilitated the decarboxylation of pentenoic acid (PEA), while higher acid sites promoted the cracking of PEA. Besides, a two-stage integration system was developed for converting GVL to C5 + hydrocarbons via butene intermediate, giving a good yield of 57.6 % C5 + hydrocarbons via combining the SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst with nano-HZSM-5 together.

Abstract:In the case of CO2 thermal-catalytic hydrogenation, highly selective olefin generation and subsequent olefin secondary reactions to fuel hydrocarbons in an ultra-short residence time is a huge challenge, especially under industrially feasible conditions. Here, we report a pioneering synthetic process that achieves selective production of high-volume commercial gasoline with the assistance of fast response mechanism. In situ experiments and DFT calculations demonstrate that the designed NaFeGaZr presents exceptional carbiding prowess, and swiftly forms carbides even at extremely brief gas residence times, facilitating olefin production. The created successive hollow zeolite HZSM-5 further reinforces aromatization of olefin diffused from NaFeGaZr via optimized mass transfer in the hollow channel of zeolite. Benefiting from its rapid response mechanism within the multifunctional catalytic system, this catalyst effectively prevents the excessive hydrogenation of intermediates and controls the swift conversion of intermediates into aromatics, even in high-throughput settings. This enables a rapid one-step synthesis of high-quality gasoline-range hydrocarbons without any post-treatment, with high commercial product compatibility and space-time yield up to 0.9 kggasoline ⋅ kgcat -1 ⋅ h-1. These findings from the current work can provide a shed for the preparation of efficient catalysts and in-depth understanding of C1 catalysis in industrial level.
High-Quality Gasoline Directly from Syngas by Dual Metal Oxide-Zeolite (OX-ZEO) Catalysis

Abstract:Despite significant efforts towards the direct conversion of syngas into liquid fuels, the selectivity remains a challenge, particularly with regard to high-quality gasoline with a high octane number and a low content of aromatic compounds. Herein, we show that zeolites with 1D ten-membered-ring (10-MR) channel structures such as SAPO-11 and ZSM-22 in combination with zinc- and manganese-based metal oxides (Zna Mnb Ox ) enable the selective synthesis of gasoline-range hydrocarbons C5 -C11 directly from syngas. The gasoline selectivity reached 76.7 % among hydrocarbons, with only 2.3 % CH4 at 20.3 % CO conversion. The ratio of isoparaffins to n-paraffins was as high as 15, and the research octane number was estimated to be 92. Furthermore, the content of aromatic compounds in the gasoline was as low as 16 %. The composition and structure of Zna Mnb Ox play an important role in determining the overall activity. This process constitutes a potential technology for the one-step synthesis of environmentally friendly gasoline with a high octane number from a variety of carbon resources via syngas.

Abstract:Poor selectivity for gasoline products is a critical issue for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Herein, we report that the introduction of a polyoxometalate Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40 (CsPW) into a conventional FTS catalyst (Co/Al2O3) can create a highly efficient bifunctional catalyst, leading to 118% increase in the selectivity of gasoline. Furthermore, it was found that such a significant improvement is due to the effective hydrocracking of heavier hydrocarbon products at CsPW sites.

Abstract:Achieving precise selectivity control by driving specific reaction paths involving selective C-O bond activation of multifunctional molecules in renewable biomass oriented-upgrading is highly attractive but challenging. Herein, a facile in-situ hydrothermal strategy was developed to obtain highly dispersed and stable Cu nanoparticles encapsulated in well-organized HZSM-5 zeolite, which exhibited extraordinary selectivity control in the lignocellulosic biomass-derived gamma-valerolactone (GVL) upgrading toward valuable valeric biofuels with good stability. The as-synthesized Cu@HZSM-5 exhibited a framework Al-dependent Cu distribution characteristic in HZSM-5, while the Cu spatial confinement by zeolite framework together with the synergetic effect of confined Cu centers and acidic zeolite support endowed the optimized Cu@HZSM-5 catalysts exceedingly high hydro-conversion efficiency. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that the transferred electrons from Cu to GVL in different zeolite microenvironments (zeolite-encapsulated and-impregnated structure) showed the very distinct redistributions on the C atoms of GVL, which was crucial to tune the ring C-O bond activation mode in GVL ring opening, consequently giving a well-controlled product selectivity.

Abstract:CuNi-ZrO2 nanocomposites were prepared by a simple coprecipitation technique of copper, nickel and zirconium ions with potassium carbonate. The structures of the nanocomposites were characterized by N2 physical adsorption, XRD, H2-TPR and STEM-EDS. The Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 nanocomposite showed outstanding catalytic performance in hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL), especially NaOH solution (0.5 mol L-1) as a solvent. 100% LA conversion and > 99.9% GVL selectivity are achieved over Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 catalyst at 200 °C, 3 MPa for 1.5 h. Characterization results suggest that the excellent reactivity of the Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 may be due to a better reducibility of nickel oxide in the CuONiO-ZrO2, dispersion of Ni in the Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 compared to nickel oxide in the NiO-ZrO2 and Ni in the Ni0.5-ZrO2 and promotion of OH-. The results demonstrate that the Cu0.05Ni0.45-ZrO2 nanocomposite has potential to realize high efficiency and low-cost synthesis of liquid fuels from biomass.

Abstract:γ‐Valerolactone (GVL) is a renowned starting material in production of bio‐fuels, valuable chemicals and polymers. The one‐pot tandem synthesis of GVL from furfural without a cumbersome intermediate separation/purification process is highly desired, yet the transformation remains challenging owing to the complicated reaction routes. Zirconium phosphate (ZrPO), a cheap and easily prepared solid catalyst with Lewis‐Brønsted dual acidity, is herein discovered to enable one‐pot tandem transformation of furfural into GVL with using 2‐propanol as H‐donor/solvent to proceed smoothly. In addition, ZrPO prepared by hydrothermal method exhibits superior catalytic performance in comparison with the counterpart prepared by co‐precipitation method, giving a 42.7% yield of GVL at 180 °C. The difference in catalytic activity between ZrPO materials prepared by hydrothermal method and co‐precipitation method is linked with their morphology and acid sites density. Furthermore, the as‐prepared ZrPO catalyst works in a heterogeneous manner and can be reused for multiple times without significant deactivation.

Design of novel hierarchical cage active particles and zeolite for direct conversion of syngas to gasoline fuel

Abstract:Although direct conversion of syngas to gasoline fuel offers a promising route to produce liquid fuel from non-petroleum carbon resources, it remains a great challenge due to the low target products selectivity and poor catalyst stability. Hence, we designed a bifunctional catalyst consisting of SiO2-coated novel hierarchical porous cage active particles and hierarchical porous zeolites, which provides a C5-C11 hydrocarbons selectivity of 63.5 wt%, and this content is reached to 99.3 % in C5+ hydrocarbons with an aromatic content of 25.7 % at 280 oC. Particularly, this vale is within the range of the restricted aromatic content. As the reaction temperature is elevated to 310 oC, zeolit-24 receives an excellent aromatic selectivity of 64.4 % in liquid hydrocarbons. This is mainly because the zeolite provides a higher acidity at a rather high reaction temperature that facilitates the formation of hydrocarbons in liquid phase towards aromatics rather than i-C5+. Aside from aromatic, a high i-C5+ content of 77.4 % in liquid hydrocarbons are obtained at 280 o over FeZ-16. At the given condition, the synthesized hybrid catalysts are benefit for the production of gasoline fuels consisting of aromatics and i-C5+. In especial, 280 oC corresponds with an optimum selectivity to i-C5+, and 310 oC is suitable for the formation of aromatic. It provides a strategy for the design and preparation of novel and efficient catalysts.

Abstract:γ-valerolactone (GVL) is an important lignocellulosic platform molecule with huge potential for various industrial and chemical applications, which is usually produced by using Levulinic acid (LA) or its esters as raw materials. However, a two-step reaction process that the hydrogenation of carbonyl groups on metal sites and subsequent lactonization catalyzed by acidic sites over multiple catalysts were generally needed to realize this synthesis. Herein, in this work, a hierarchically multifunctional single catalyst Ru/HPW/HP-UiO-66, simultaneously integrated with acidic and metal sites has been fabricated via a simple strategy and successfully applied in the one-pot synthesis of GVL by using methyl levulinate (ML) as raw materials. The hierarchically porous and nanosized (~15 nm) HP-UiO-66 not only can provide sufficient space for the mass transfer of substrates but also favors the loading of bulk HPW molecules, which can effectively mediate the catalytic activities and stability of Ru NPs by using the confined pore effect of UiO-66 and strong interaction between HPW and Ru. When applied in the one-pot synthesis of GVL, the hierarchical Ru/HPW/HP-UiO-66 catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity (> 97% yield) and stability (maintained after successive 7 cycles) for GVL. More importantly, the hierarchically catalyst also exhibited extraordinary performance in the hydrogenation of different unsaturated hydrocarbons under aqueous solution. It is expected that our study will open a novel route to biomass upgrade involving metal/acid bifunctional synergistic catalysts.

Abstract:Thermal catalytic converting CO2 to produce high-value gasoline is a promising and sustainable way to deal with greenhouse gases and alleviate the energy crisis and environment problem. Although significant efforts have been invested in this area, the active catalysts to achieve high gasoline space time yields remains a bottleneck in the process. Herein, we provided an easy-to-prepare Fe/C catalyst coupled with HZSM-5 as a tandem catalyst, showing surprisingly high gasoline space-time yield of 91.2 μmolCO2 gFe-1 s-1. The catalyst contained three active sites (Fe3O4, Fe5C2 and acid sites) that could synergistically catalyze a tandem reaction. Tandem catalysts loaded in layers could better exploit the activity of their three sites. The highly selective light olefins produced on the Fe/C catalyst could be converted to gasoline on the downstream HZSM-5. More promisingly, the stable and excellent CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins activity of the Fe/C catalyst and the excellent anti-carbon deposition ability of HZSM-5 resulted in no significant deactivation of the tandem catalyst over 180 h. Overall, the present work provides a green and efficient catalyst for the conversion of CO2 to gasoline, which will benefit the sustainability of the field in the near future.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of CO 2 into value-added hydrocarbons, particularly single products, is of great interest. However, this is a challenge because of the simultaneous occurrence of numerous competing elementary reactions. Here a GaZrO x /H-SSZ-13 composite is developed, which shows propane selectivity in hydrocarbons of 79.5%, along with butane selectivity of 9.9% and CO selectivity of 31.8%, at CO 2 conversion of 43.4%. Such catalytic performance can be well maintained within 500 h. Incorporation of proper amounts of Ga into ZrO 2 promotes methanol formation due to generation of high concentrations of surface oxygen vacancies with moderate CO 2 adsorption strength. The large number of strong-acid sites of H-SSZ-13 seriously restricts conversion of generated methanol into aromatics at high H 2 pressure, suppressing the aromatics-based cycle and favouring the alkene-based cycle instead. Accordingly, far more propene and butene are obtained than ethene, although they are rapidly hydrogenated to corresponding alkanes on the strong-acid sites of H-SSZ-13.

Abstract:CO2 hydrogenation to gasoline fuels remains a sticky problem of CO selectivity from reverse water-gas shift reactions over a metal oxide and zeolite bifunctional catalyst. Herein, we report an efficient catalyst combining a Fe–Zn–Zr–T oxide hydrothermally treated with TPABr solution and HZSM-5 zeolite for CO2 hydrogenation into high-quality gasoline. The hydrothermal treatment contributes to the obvious enrichment of the Zn component and the residual Br on the surface of Fe–Zn–Zr–T oxide, as compared to Fe–Zn–Zr oxide, as well as the increased number of oxygen vacancies. These surface properties not only induce the increase of the H2 adsorption and CO2 adsorption ratio but also enhance the adsorption strength of the HCOO* species and the desorption rate of CH3O* species (close intermediate of methanol) over Fe–Zn–Zr–T oxide, which are responsible for higher methanol selectivity and lower CO selectivity. Furthermore, the presence of the adsorbed CO* species and higher C2+ hydrocarbon selectivity on Fe–Zn–Zr oxide affirm the F–T route of CO2 hydrogenation except for the methanol route, while the F–T route is effectively restrained after the TPABr hydrothermal treatment of Fe–Zn–Zr–T oxide. As the Fe and Zn–Zr molar ratio decreases, more HCOO* and CH3O* species on Fe–Zn–Zr (0.1:1:1)–T–24 h can form, which is in good agreement with the much higher methanol selectivity on Fe–Zn–Zr (0.1:1:1)–T–24 h oxide and hydrocarbon selectivity on the Fe–Zn–Zr(0.1:1:1)–T–24 core–shell catalyst. The CO selectivity and C5+ isoalkane selectivity in gasoline on Fe–Zn–Zr(0.1:1:1)–T–24 are up to 24% and 93%, respectively, with a CO2 conversion of 18%. Abstract:The production of γ-valerolactone (GVL) receives increasing attention due to its extensive applications as a promising fuel and fuel additive. In this study, the direct conversion of biomass-derived furfural to GVL with a unprecedent yield of 90.5% was achieved via consecutive hydrogenation and acid-catalyzed reactions over CuAl for hydrogenation and a co-catalyst (i.e. H-ZSM-5) for acid-catalysis in ethanol. The relative abundance of the hydrogenation sites and acidic sites determines the reaction network and the transfer of the main products from furfuryl alcohol (FA) to ethyl levulinate (EL) or GVL, as the acidic sites, especially the Brønsted acidic sites, not only catalyze the formation of EL from FA, but also affect the hydrogenation activity of CuAl. However, the Lewis acidic sites facilitate the opening ring of FA to 1,4-pentanediol, preventing the GVL formation. The acid catalyst and hydrogenation catalyst deactivate via varied mechanisms in the conversion of furfural to GVL, which is required to be considered in the further development of the robust catalysts.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of greenhouse CO2 into valuable chemicals or fuels is highly attractive in terms of sustainable development. The chemical inertness of CO2 molecules and high kinetic barriers for C–C propagation hinder its efficient utilization. Here we report a bifunctional catalyst composed of K-Fe/C and zeolite that efficiently produced liquid fuels via simply tuning the microenvironment properties of ZSM-5 zeolite. The catalysts are characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). K-Fe/C catalyst is mainly responsible for the formation of olefins, while ZSM-5 catalyst is mainly responsible for olefin secondary reaction, such as aromatization, isomerization, and cracking reaction. Surface acid properties of ZSM-5 can be well regulated through different ion-exchange strategies (NH4+, K+, Na+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Cs2+, La3+, Ce2+, Mn2+), in which the strong surface acid properties of ZSM-5 are eliminated with the utilization of K+-ion exchange strategy and then it presents a high C5+ selectivity by suppressing the light saturated hydrocarbons formation. This work provides new insights or facile catalyst treatment for the efficient production of liquid fuels from CO2 hydrogenation via tuning surface microenvironment properties of ZSM-5 zeolite.

Abstract:Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds provides a viable strategy to synthesize high value-added chemicals and biofuels, for which the development of efficient catalysts still remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a Zn-based single-atom catalyst (Zn/NC-950), prepared by pyrolysis of ZIF-8 at 950 degrees C, for the CTH of ethyl levulinate to gamma- valerolactone (GVL). This catalyst exhibited excellent performance, affording a GVL selectivity of 95.3 % at an ethyl levulinate conversion of 100 %, using isopropanol as the hydrogen source at 200 degrees C and autogenous pressure. The structural characterization and theoretical calculation demonstrate that such extraordinary efficacy of the Zn/NC-950 catalyst is attributed to the dual ZnN3C1 3 C 1 and Zn-N2C2 2 C 2 sites of low Zn oxidation states, which work synergistically to generate the active hydrogen species and activate the carbonyl bonds, respectively. This work provides a rationale for the precise design of the non-noble metal single-atom catalysts efficient for the biomass valorization.
