Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are a new class of porous organic materials, are considered as potential candidates for separation membranes because of their regular channels and tailored functionality. The imine-linked COF was synthesized using reversible condensation reactions, resulting in its un-stabilization in the acid environment. Thus, it is a formidable challenge to develop stable COFs membranes for applications in harsh environments (e.g. strong acid). Herein, we demonstrated the in-situ construction of acid-stable COF separating layer (TMTATGCl) on the surface of the hydrophilic hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) substrate via acid-catalyzed interfacial polymerization. Triaminoguanidine chloride (TGCl), a cationic monomer, was used to construct cationic nanochannels in the COF layer, conferring its screening feature toward cations, especially toward divalent cations. Besides, implanted methoxy groups could facilitate H+ diffusion along the pore pathway of the as-prepared COF. As a result, the methoxy functionalized cationic nanochannels of the DMTATGCl/HPAN enhanced H+ transfer, while other ions (e.g. Fe2+) were obstructed, allowing for high selectivity (S =1248.9) and permeability (UH+ = 0.0118 m/h). Moreover, the membranes (TMTATGCl/HPAN) exhibited remarkable acid-stability, which maintained the high separation performance after 10 cycles under strong-acid conditions. This study provides an effective strategy for developing the ion channels membrane with specific interaction sites for effective ion separation.

Abstract:A novel 3D porous metal-organic framework with ID polarized channels was synthesized, and its adsorption properties for gas separation and chemical sensing were studied. The framework shows a preferential adsorption of CO2 over N-2 with a. selectivity of 22:1. It also exhibits a very good sensitivity to water with respect to most of the organic solvents in view of chemical sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

Abstract:Extracting highly value-added products from natural systems with low concentrations and complex constituents is of great significance but remains a massive challenge. Herein, a series of dual-functional covalent organic frameworks with both anion exchange and pore adsorption abilities are designed and fabricated using the quaternary amine monomer doping strategy. Attributed to abundant ion exchange sites and selective pore adsorption, the COFs demonstrate high selectivity and loading capacity and fast adsorption for natural products (glycyrrhetinic acid, a high-value natural product), surpassing commercially available materials. Additionally, high-purity (>99%) glycyrrhetinic acid with a >90% extraction efficiency from natural fermentation systems is successfully achieved using a solid-phase extraction column with COFs as the separation medium. The separation column demonstrates outstanding reusability and reproducibility, providing great potential for COFs to serve as robust separation mediums for challenging natural product purification.

Abstract:The ion extraction and electro/photo catalysis are promising methods to address environmental and energy issues. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of promising template to construct absorbents and catalysts because of their stable frameworks, high surface areas, controllable pore environments, and well-defined catalytic sites. Among them, ionic COFs as unique class of crystalline porous materials, with charges in the frameworks or along the pore walls, have shown different properties and resulting performance in these applications with those from charge-neutral COFs. In this review, current research progress based on the ionic COFs for ion extraction and energy conversion, including cationic/anionic materials and electro/photo catalysis is reviewed in terms of the synthesis strategy, modification methods, mechanisms of adsorption and catalysis, as well as applications. Finally, we demonstrated the current challenges and future development of ionic COFs in design strategies and applications.

Abstract:Recovery of silver from wastewater is a promising alternative from the economic and environmental perspective. Herein, we present an ultrastable ionic covalent organic framework (COF) as a recyclable adsorbent for Ag(I) recovery. The COF exhibits a large surface area, regular pores, and extremely high chemical stability combined with the confined ionic interface, which makes it an excellent material for silver adsorption with fast adsorption kinetics, excellent selectivity, and high saturated adsorption capacity (up to 349.6 mg/g). The superb uptake performance of the cationic COF is attributed to the in-situ precipitation of AgBr and adsorption as well as the coordination of O atoms on the framework to silver.

Abstract:A covalent organic framework (COF) was gown on porous silica with 1,3,5-tri(4-aminophenyl)benzene and 2,5-divinyl-1,4-phenyldiformaldehyde as monomers, and two ionic liquids were grafted to COF by a click reaction. The materials before and after the modification of ionic liquids were separately packed into solid-phase extraction columns (10 × 4.6 mm, i.d.), which were coupled with liquid chromatography to construct online analysis systems. The extraction mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, bisphenols, diphenylalkanes and benzoic acids were investigated on these materials. There were π-π, hydrogen-bond and electrostatic interactions on ionic liquid-functionalized sorbents. After the comparison among these materials, the best sorbent was used, and the analytical method was established and successfully applied to the detection of some estrogens from actual samples. For the analytical method, the detection limit was as low as 0.005 μg L-1, linear range was as wide as 0.017-10.0 μg L-1, and enrichment ratio was as high as 3635. The recoveries in actual samples were 70 %-129 %.

Abstract:The emerging global water crisis necessitates the development of solid adsorbents for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater. Herein, we develop an anionic sulfonate-functionalized covalent organic framework (COF), termed TpStb-SO 3 Na, by the Schiff-base condensation between 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 4,4′-diaminostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid (Stb-SO 3 H) under solvothermal conditions in the presence of sodium acetate. Thanks to the dense sulfonate groups in the periodic one-dimensional channels, the negatively charged TpStb-SO 3 Na displayed rapid kinetics (average ∼ 99% uptake in merely 10 min) and ultrahigh adsorption capacities for multiple cationic dyes including methylene blue (MB, 1078 mg g −1 ), crystal violet (CV, 1861 mg g −1 ), malachite green (MG, 5857 mg g −1 ) and janus green B (JGB, 1339 mg g −1 ) at room temperature. Noteworthy, the adsorption capacities of TpStb-SO 3 Na toward CV, MG, and JGB were the record-high values among the documented COFs, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and other benchmark adsorbents. In addition, the adsorption behaviors of MB, CV, MG, and JGB on TpStb-SO 3 Na obeyed the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model. On the contrary, TpStb-SO 3 Na presented low adsorption capacity for anionic dyes like methyl orange (MO) and fluorescein sodium (FS), rendering it a promising sorbent for the separation of cationic and anionic dyes based on charge difference. Furthermore, TpStb-SO 3 Na was easily regenerated and reused for five cycles with no obvious loss in its adsorption performance. This work uncovers the vast potential of anionic COFs for the effective removal of organic dye pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show excellent property, such as high porosity and excellent structure stability and were well applied in fields such as catalysis and adsorption, but most of the COFs showed similar structure and thus similar adsorption performance. Modification of simple COFs to enhance its adsorption performance in separation technique is an important issue. In this study, quaternary ammonium groups with long hydrophobic chain were introduced into a simple COF (TpPa-1) for the first time. The positively charged COF (PC-TpPa-1) can form electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic effect with negatively charged analytes, and showed good adsorption performance for ultraviolet-filters (UV filters). Under the optimum conditions, i.e. adsorbent amount 20 mg, pH = 7, 1.0 mL acetonitrile as eluent, the obtained recoveries for all UV filters were in the range of 86.4–96.7%.The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of UV filters from food packaging material migrants with the aid of HPLC as a detector.

Abstract:Among various kinds of materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are ideal candidates for targeting desired applications, as their conformations and topological structures can be precisely tuned by selection of appropriate building units and connection modes. Multifunctional COFs with integrated functions hold great promise for solving energy and environmental issues. A multifunctional COF (Por-BFBIm-COF) with dual active sites of imidazole ring and porphyrin was designed in this work. The Por-BFBIm-COF not only possessed the features of COFs such as crystallinity and porosity but also exhibited radical characteristics like high spin density (1.22E19 spin/g at 298 K). Selective ion capture, photocatalytic oxidative amine coupling, and photocatalytic α-terpinene oxidation were used as three model systems to demonstrate the capabilities of the Por-BFBIm-COF. In the presence of oxygen and visible light, the Por-BFBIm-COF exhibited very high activities in photocatalytic reactions with producing superoxide anion radical and singlet oxygen active species, respectively. The rational design of the multifunctional COF offered new insights for developing multifunctional materials in energy and environmental fields.

Abstract:The emergence of all‐organic frameworks is of fundamental significance, and designing such structures for anion conduction holds great promise in energy conversion and storage applications. Herein, inspired by the efficient anion transport within organisms, a de novo design of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) toward ultrafast anion transport is demonstrated. A phase‐transfer polymerization process is developed to acquire dense and ordered alignment of quaternary ammonium‐functionalized side chains along the channels within the frameworks. The resultant self‐standing COFs membranes exhibit one of the highest hydroxide conductivities (212 mS cm−1 at 80 °C) among the reported anion exchange membranes. Meanwhile, it is found that shorter, more hydrophilic side chains are favorable for anion conduction. The present work highlights the prospects of all‐organic framework materials as the platform building blocks in designing ion exchange membranes and ion sieving membranes.

Abstract:A novel magnetic ionic covalent organic framework (Fe3O4@EB-iCOFs) was designed and synthesized. It was then characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption analysis, and magnetic measurements, among others. The material shows the advantages of ionic property, large surface area, and magnetic responsiveness. It has potential of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). A method for the determination of PFCs based on MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS was established. The method has excellent linearity (r ≥ 0.995) in the working range 1-1000 ng L-1 , good repeatability (1.4–5.8%, n = 6), low limits of detection in the range 0.1–0.8 ng L−1 and satisfactory recoveries (between 73.9 and 108.3%).

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new type of crystalline porous polymers known for chemical stability, excellent structural regularity, robust framework, and inherent porosity, making them promising materials for capturing various types of pollutants from aqueous solutions. This review thoroughly presents the recent progress and advances of COFs and COF-based materials as superior adsorbents for the efficient removal of toxic heavy metal ions, radionuclides, and organic pollutants. Information about the interaction mechanisms between various pollutants and COF-based materials are summarized from the macroscopic and microscopic standpoints, including batch experiments, theoretical calculations, and advanced spectroscopy analysis. The adsorption properties of various COF-based materials are assessed and compared with other widely used adsorbents. Several commonly used strategies to enhance COF-based materials' adsorption performance and the relationship between structural property and sorption ability are also discussed. Finally, a summary and perspective on the opportunities and challenges of COFs and COF-based materials are proposed to provide some inspiring information on designing and fabricating COFs and COF-based materials for environmental pollution management.

Abstract:A covalent organic framework (COF) with multi-carbonyl was synthesized by a condensation reaction between 1,3,5-triformyl chlorobutanediol (TFP) and 2.5-diamino benzene sulfonic acid (PaSO 3 H), It is using as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Benefiting from the rigid porous network structure of COFs (TFP-PaSO 3 H) and the synergistic effect of covalent bonds, it shows good electrochemical performance, including a high reversible capacity of 427.7 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 after 300 cycles. This contribution shows a broad application prospect of COF anode in lithium-organic batteries.

Abstract:The covalent organic frameworks (COFs) possessing high crystallinity and capability to capture low-concentration CO2 (400 ppm) from air are still underdeveloped. The challenge lies in simultaneously incorporating high-density active sites for CO2 insertion and maintaining the ordered structure. Herein, a structure engineering approach is developed to afford an ionic pair-functionalized crystalline and stable fluorinated COF (F-COF) skeleton. The ordered structure of the F-COF is well maintained after the integration of abundant basic fluorinated alcoholate anions, as revealed by synchrotron X-ray scattering experiments. The breakthrough test demonstrates its attractive performance in capturing (400 ppm) CO2 from gas mixtures via O─C bond formation, as indicated by the in situ spectroscopy and operando nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy using 13C-labeled CO2 sources. Both theoretical and experimental thermodynamic studies reveal the reaction enthalpy of ≈-40 kJ mol-1 between CO2 and the COF scaffolds. This implies weaker interaction strength compared with state-of-the-art amine-derived sorbents, thus allowing complete CO2 release with less energy input. The structure evolution study from synchrotron X-ray scattering and small-angle neutron scattering confirms the well-maintained crystalline patterns after CO2 insertion. The as-developed proof-of-concept approach provides guidance on anchoring binding sites for direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 in crystalline scaffolds.

Abstract:Isolation and enrichment of flavonoids is difficult due to the complex active components in natural medicinal extracts, and one of the most effective methods is to design adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with a large specific surface area and adjustable pores are increasingly used as adsorbents. Here, two imine-linked COFs (TFPPy-CB and TFPPy-ODH) consisting of 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene, carbamide, and oxalyl dihydrazide were synthesized using solvothermal methods. They were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, XPS, TGA, SEM, TEM, water contact angle, and N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. These two highly crystalline COFs have good thermal stability, strong hydrophobicity, and large pore size. The adsorption results were fitted to the general-order model and the Langmuir model, indicating that monolayer adsorption is the dominant adsorption mechanism. At 45 °C, the maximum adsorption capacities of luteolin, quercetin, and rutin onto TFPPy-CB were 66.32, 67.85, and 10.69 mg/g, respectively, and onto TFPPy-ODH were 73.20, 70.83, and 9.76 mg/g, respectively. The thermodynamic properties (ΔH° and ΔS°>0, ΔG°<0) indicated that the adsorption of flavonoids onto COFs was a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The COFs exhibited reusability after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles and selectivity for flavonoids in the presence of alkaloid interference. Furthermore, physicochemical properties and adsorption data revealed that the interaction between COFs and flavonoids involved hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. These materials had an extremely short adsorption equilibrium time (less than 10 min) and could potentially be used as adsorbents for the rapid enrichment of flavonoids in complex systems.

Abstract:Abstract Radioiodine capture from nuclear fuel waste and contaminated water sources is of enormous environmental importance, but remains technically challenging. Herein, we demonstrate robust covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with antiparallel stacked structures, excellent radiation resistance, and high binding affinities toward I 2 , CH 3 I, and I 3 − under various conditions. A neutral framework (ACOF-1) achieves a high affinity through the cooperative functions of pyridine-N and hydrazine groups from antiparallel stacking layers, resulting in a high capacity of ~2.16 g/g for I 2 and ~0.74 g/g for CH 3 I at 25 °C under dynamic adsorption conditions. Subsequently, post-synthetic methylation of ACOF-1 converted pyridine-N sites to cationic pyridinium moieties, yielding a cationic framework (namely ACOF-1R) with enhanced capacity for triiodide ion capture from contaminated water. ACOF-1R can rapidly decontaminate iodine polluted groundwater to drinking levels with a high uptake capacity of ~4.46 g/g established through column breakthrough tests. The cooperative functions of specific binding moieties make ACOF-1 and ACOF-1R promising adsorbents for radioiodine pollutants treatment under practical conditions.
