Abstract:Background Due to their large surface area and distinctive adsorption affinity, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) appear to be good candidates as liquid chromatographic separation materials with good application prospect. The development of COF materials in chromatographic science is currently in an exploratory stage. Especially, the practicability of COF@silica composite materials as liquid chromatographic stationary phases needs further exploration. Reasonably integrating a functional component such as ionic liquid (IL) into the COF@silica composite materials may provide customized functionality to achieve the purpose of synthesizing multi-functional COF based stationary phases. Results In this study, an IL modified COF bonded silica composite material (IL-COF@SiO 2 ) was successfully synthesized by using an environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvent as the reaction medium instead of the frequently-used organic solvent. The synthesized IL-COF@SiO 2 composite material combines the excellent separation ability of COF and the excellent mass transfer function of spherical porous silica microsphere, and meanwhile, the introduction of IL endows COF@SiO 2 with preferable separation performance. The slurry-packed IL-COF@SiO 2 liquid chromatographic column could be applied to effectively separate hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds with preferable separation selectivity and high column efficiency. By investigating the retention behavior and influencing factors, a mixed-mode retention mechanism was found. Multiple interaction forces endowed the IL-COF@SiO 2 with a hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance performance, demonstrating a good application prospect as a versatile liquid chromatographic separation material. Significance In this study, a new strategy is proposed for greenly synthesizing a novel IL-COF@SiO 2 composite material under mild conditions, which expands the potential application of COF materials in chromatographic science. One particular point to note is that the reaction medium in each step of the preparation process is low toxic and degradable deep eutectic solvent, which conforms to the concept of green chemistry.

Abstract:The composites of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and silica gel have been considered to be promising chromatographic separation materials due to the distinct advantages such as large specific surface area, good mechanical strength and high porosity. In the present study, a novel imine-linked COF@silica composite was prepared by in-situ growth of 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TAPT) and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (DHTA) monomers on the surface of aminated silica gel (SiO2-NH2). The successful surface-modification of TAPT-DHTA-COF distinctly enhanced the separation selectivity and efficiency of SiO2-NH2. Multiple types of analyte-stationary phase interactions contributed to the selective retention of structurally similar analytes. The designed TAPT-DHTA-COF@SiO2 was observed to effectively separate hydrophobic phenyl ketones, phthalate esters and steroid hormones. Moreover, the polar amino and hydroxyl groups of TAPT-DHTA-COF facilitated the selective determination of hydrophilic nucleosides/bases. The kinetic performance and thermodynamic behavior of TAPT-DHTA-COF@SiO2 column were particularly explored. It was found that column efficiency was mainly affected by the mass transfer resistance, and the retention of nucleosides/bases on the TAPT-DHTA-COF@SiO2 column was temperature dependent. The developed versatile TAPT-DHTA-COF@SiO2 column was finally applied for detecting environmental hormones as well as water-soluble nicotinamide in real samples. In summary, the potential application of TAPT-DHTA-COF@SiO2 composite material for liquid chromatographic separations was first explored and verified. The TAPT-DHTA-COF@SiO2 was proved to be a promising chromatographic separation material.
One-pot fabrication and evaluation of β-ketoenamine covalent organic frameworks@silica composite microspheres as reversed-phase/hydrophilic interaction mixed-mode stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show promise as a stationary phase in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). However, there are only a few COFs-based stationary phases developed for HPLC separation so far. Therefore, it is crucial to not only develop more varieties of COFs-type stationary phases for HPLC separation, but also to explore the retention mechanism of solutes on these stationary phases. In this paper, a new in-situ growth method was developed to prepare β-ketoenamine COF-TpPa-1@SiO2 composite microspheres, using spherical silica as the core material and COF-TpPa-1 fabricated by covalent conjugation of 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and p-phenylenediamine (Pa-1) as the COF shells. The resulting microspheres exhibit uniform morphology, good monodispersity, large specific surface area, narrow size distribution, and high stability. Due to diverse functional groups in the structure of COF-TpPa-1, the microspheres can offer multiple interactions, such as hydrophobic, π-π stacking and electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) between COFs and analytes. As a result, the COF-TpPa-1@SiO2 composite microspheres can be used as a mixed-mode stationary phase for HPLC separation. The chromatographic performance and retention mechanism of the COF-TpPa-1@SiO2 packed column were investigated by separating polar and non-polar solutes, as well as isomers, in various HPLC modes, including reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC), and RPLC/HILIC mixed-mode chromatography. The results showed successful separation of non-polar alkylbenzene homologues, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polar amines and phenols in RPLC mode. The "U-shaped" curves of retention factor with the ACN concentration in mobile phase for four nucleobases indicated that the solute retention on the column followed a mixed mode mechanism of RPLC/HILIC. Compared to a traditional C18 column, the COF-TpPa-1@SiO2 column exhibited superior separation efficiency, stability, repeatability and reproducibility in the separation of analytes with different polarities. The column enhanced the aromatic, shape and planar selectivity for PAHs and isomers through π-π interaction and improved the separation efficiency for electron-deficient compounds due to EDA effect. At last, the column was successfully used to separate and detect the residues of 5 phenylurea herbicides (PUHs) in soil. All these results indicate the potential of COFs for chromatography applications.

Abstract:In this work, COF-LZU1@PEI@Fe3O4 was synthesized by immobilization of COF-LZU1 onto the surface of polyethyleneimine-functionalized Fe3O4 nanoparticles (PEI@Fe3O4) and employed as an adsorbent for magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of tetracyclines (TCs). COF-LZU1@PEI@Fe3O4 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms analysis. The optimal extraction and desorption conditions were as follows: 15.00 mL sample solution (pH 7.0) extracted with 5.0 mg of adsorbent for 30 min at 30 °C, and then desorbed with 1.50 mL methanol/acetonitrile/0.02 mol L-1 oxalic acid solution (v/v, 1 : 2 : 7). Good linearities were obtained between the peak area and TC concentration ranging from 5-500 μg L-1 with correlation coefficients (R2) higher than 0.9992 and limits of detection lower than 0.51 μg L-1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of intra-day and inter-day were less than 5.7% and 7.4%, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of TCs in environmental water samples with recoveries in the range of 87.0-113.8% and RSDs less than 5.1%, suggesting great potential of COF-LZU1@PEI@Fe3O4 for efficient extraction and analysis of trace TCs in water samples.

Abstract:A facile, in situ growth strategy for the synthesis of monodispersed COF@SiO2 microspheres is reported. The microspheres have uniform and controllable COF shells, and are used as the stationary phase for HPLC. The TpBD COF, constructed from 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and benzidine (BD), is taken as the COF shell, and aminosilica (SiO2 -NH2 ) is employed as the core to support the TpBD shell. The TpBD shell thickness is adjusted by controlling the concentrations of the Tp and BD monomers. The TpBD@SiO2 packed columns show excellent hydrophobic selectivity, and good reproducibility for the separation of neutral (toluene and ethylbenzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), acidic (hydroquinone, p-cresol, and p-chlorophenol), and basic molecules (nucleobases, nucleosides, and deoxynucleosides).
In-situ fabrication of a chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework coating for solid-phase microextraction of polychlorinated biphenyls in surface water

Abstract:The functionalization of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) identifies significant potential for developing selective coating materials for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Herein, a chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework (CF-COF) was in-situ synthesized by employing triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 2,5-dichloro-1,4-phenylenediamine (2,5-DCA) as monomers on an amino-functionalized stainless steel wire. The obtained CF-COF coated fiber exhibited a higher enrichment capacity for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) than commercial fibers and non-chlorinated COF fiber, owing to a more hydrophobic surface, size-matching effect, a large number of micropores and the π–π stacking interactions between COF coating and analytes. As a practical application, the CF-COF coated fiber was applied to the headspace extraction of 17 PCBs prior to their quantification by GC/MS. The established analytical method offered a good linearity in the range of 0.1 − 1000 ng L-1, low detection limits of 0.0015-0.0088 ng L−1, and satisfactory enhancement factors (EFs) of 699 - 4281. The repeatability for single fiber and the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility was lower than 9.26% and 9.33%, respectively. The proposed method was verified to be sensitive, selective, and applicable for the analysis of ultra-trace PCBs in environmental surface water samples with the recoveries ranged from 78.7% to 124.0%.

Abstract:A magnetic covalent organic framework (Fe3O4@COF) with core–shell structure was fabricated at room temperature and used as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of polar endocrine-disrupting phenols (4-n-nonylphenol, 4-n-octylphenol, bisphenol A and bisphenol AF). The sorbent was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, FTIR, powder X-ray diffraction and other techniques. The main parameters governing the extraction efficiency were optimized. The phenols were quantified by HPLC with fluorometric detection. The method has attractive features such as low limits of detection (0.08–0.21 ng.mL−1), wide linear ranges (0.5–1000 ng.mL−1), and good repeatability (intra-day: 0.39%–4.99%; inter-day: 1.57%–5.21%). Satisfactory results were obtained when the developed method was applied to determine the four target pollutants in real world drink samples with spiked recoveries over the range of 81.3~118.0%. This indicates that the method is a powerful tool for the enrichment and determination of endocrine-disrupting phenols in drink samples.Graphical abstractA magnetite based covalent organic framework (Fe3O4@COFs) was synthesized with TPAB, TPA and Fe3O4. Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF) exhibit excellent extraction performance in sample pretreatment, but their wider application is hindered by some inherent drawbacks. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel hybrid material with large specific surface area, good chemical stability and reusability, which is suitable as a solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbent for the efficient extraction of flavonoids. Importantly, due to the synergistic effect, the obtained hybrid material showing a higher extraction efficiency than individual MOF and COF. This is mainly due to the obtained hybrid material combines the high specific surface area of MOF and multiple interactions (hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interaction) with flavonoids conferred by the COF structure. Then, a sensitive analytical method for flavonoids with ideal linear range (1-500 ng mL −1 ), low detection limit (0.15-0.41 ng mL −1 ) and good repeatability (2.64-6.20%) was developed under optimized conditions. In addition, the hybrid sorbent has better selectivity for hydrophobic targets containing multiple hydrogen bond acceptors/donors. Finally, the established method was applied to the determination of flavonoids in different food samples, and satisfactory recoveries (81.4-102.1%) were obtained, which initially confirmed its applicability.

Abstract:The composite materials consist of Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) and silica have been regarded as a kind of promising stationary phases due to combination of the large specific surface area and good mechanical strength of porous silica microspheres and the porous structure and the excellent stability of COFs. Herein, a novel COFs-silica composite (SiO2@rLZU1, reduced Lan Zhou University-1) was prepared via an in-situ growth strategy with a 32 nm-thick COFs layer on the surface of silica and a 2.2 nm-thick COFs layer on the inner surface of the mesopores of spherical silica (5 μm, 120 Å). With secondary amine and phenyl groups, the novel stationary phase provided hydrophilic, hydrophobic and π-π interactions when used in HPLC, showing different selectivity from typical reversed-phase stationary phases. Probe molecules with aromatic moieties varying in polarity, including acidic (phenol, pyrocatechol, and pyrogallol), basic (aniline, 4-chloroaniline, and 4-nitroaniline) and neutral (benzene homologues) compounds, were all baseline separated on the SiO2@rLZU1 column, indicating its excellent separation performance. Besides, the SiO2@rLZU1 column also exhibited great repeatability with intraday RSDs of the retention time of three anilines less than 0.31% (n = 6) and peak area less than 1.63% (n = 6). On the SiO2@rLZU1 column, satisfied results were achieved in the separation of real samples such as fullerenes and coking wastewater, suggesting the great potential of the as-synthesized stationary phase in HPLC applications.

Abstract:The efficient enrichment of trace polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in environmental waters remains challenging for environmental monitoring and analysis. Herein, a covalent organic frameworks-poly(ionic liquid)s hybrid material (COF-γ-PIL) is synthesized by threading poly(1-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium bis ((trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl) imide) into a vinyl-decorated COF via photopolymerization. The resultant hybrid retains the crystallinity and porosity of COF, thus offering adequate adsorption sites for the targets. PIL threaded in COF facilitates the synergistic capture of target molecules within the hybrid through multiple interactions, including Van der Waals forces, weak hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. As a proof of concept, COF-γ-PIL was utilized as the fiber coating for SPME of PBDEs in waters prior to their analysis via GC-MS. Excellent analytical results were achieved, with wide linearity (0.01–100 ng L −1 ), low limits of detection (0.0021–0.014 ng L −1 ), and satisfactory recoveries (78.6%−103.6%). The outstanding extraction performance can be ascribed to the extraordinary flexibility of the active fraction on linear polymers threaded in COF, which facilitates collaborative capture for target molecules, as revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work uncovers the microscopic mechanism for PBDEs capturing and provides new insights into the design of functionalized COF hybrids.

Abstract:Background The development of efficent chromatographic stationary phases (SP) with mixed-mode or multiple interactions in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the separation of complex samples is a challenging task. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based SP can provide desired multiple interactions and enable the separation of a diverse range of solutes, but have limitations of low column efficiency and poor stability. (58) Results Herein, the hybrid MOFs@Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) materials were used as SP in HPLC due to their synergistic structural features. The SiO 2 @NH 2 -UiO-66@CTF SP was synthesized by integration of NH 2 -UiO-66 and covalent triazine framework (CTF) onto silica surface. Due to the unique structure of SiO 2 @NH 2 -UiO-66@CTF with hierarchical-pores, this column showed higher column efficiency (up to 49,369 plates m −1 for alkylbenzenes) than the reported columns packed with MOFs-based SP. Owing to the Zr 4+ -N coordination bonding between CTF and NH 2 -UiO-66, the structural stability of SiO 2 @NH 2 -UiO-66@CTF can be improved. Furthermore, this new column exhibited remarkable column stability with relative standard deviation of retention time of <0.40% after 400 injections. With the combined advantages of multifunctional properties, high column efficiency, and good stability, SiO 2 @NH 2 -UiO-66@CTF SP showed excellent selectivity for the separation of a variety of hydrophobic, aromatic, heteroatomic, and hydrophilic analytes. (137) Significance and novelty This work not only offers a promising SP with multiple retention mechanisms for HPLC, but also provides an efficient strategy for development of high column efficiency MOFs-based SP with good stability. Abstract:High-performance extraction of polar phenols from aqueous samples is challenging because of their hydrophilicity, extremely low concentration, and complicated matrices. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are new types of porous organic materials. In this work, spherical TPB-DMTP-COF was fabricated via a simple room-temperature solution-phase approach. The material exhibited high acid/base stability, remarkable thermostability, high crystallinity, and large surface area of 1560 m(2) g(-1) and thus could be an excellent coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of phenols. This coating provided superior adsorption affinity toward phenols over commercial coatings. TPB-DMTP-coated fiber showed high enhancement factors (EFs, 1741-4265), and EFs increased with the number of chlorine or methyl substituents and high hydrophobicity of phenols. Hence, the strong adsorption affinity could be derived from hydrophobic and steric hindrance effects together with pi-pi affinity, H-bonding, van der Waals forces, and size-matching effect. The proposed approach based on TPB-DMTP-COF-coated fiber and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry achieved low limits of detection (0.0048-0.015 ng L-1), wide linearity (0.05-1000 ng L-1), good precision (< 8.87%), and reproducibility ( < 10.0%). The actual amounts of phenols ranged from 0.6 ng L-1 to 22.7 ng L-1 in underground water and reservoir water. The satisfactory recoveries (81.3-116.3%) for simultaneous analysis of five phenols were obtained. Therefore, TPB-DMTP-COF coating could be an excellent alternative for sensitive analysis of phenols at ultra-trace level in complex samples.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show excellent property, such as high porosity and excellent structure stability and were well applied in fields such as catalysis and adsorption, but most of the COFs showed similar structure and thus similar adsorption performance. Modification of simple COFs to enhance its adsorption performance in separation technique is an important issue. In this study, quaternary ammonium groups with long hydrophobic chain were introduced into a simple COF (TpPa-1) for the first time. The positively charged COF (PC-TpPa-1) can form electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic effect with negatively charged analytes, and showed good adsorption performance for ultraviolet-filters (UV filters). Under the optimum conditions, i.e. adsorbent amount 20 mg, pH = 7, 1.0 mL acetonitrile as eluent, the obtained recoveries for all UV filters were in the range of 86.4–96.7%.The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of UV filters from food packaging material migrants with the aid of HPLC as a detector.

Abstract:In this work, a porous extended network covalent organic framework designated as TP-NDA-COF was synthesized by the reaction of 2,4,6-trihydroxy-benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (TP) and 1,5-naphthalenediamine (NDA). The structure and morphology of the TP-NDA-COF was characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The TP-NDA-COF was applied as a solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the extraction of some chlorophenols from water and lemon black tea beverage samples prior to high performance liquid chromatography-UV detection. The main experimental parameters that affect the extraction efficiency including the type and volume of eluent, sample solution volume, sample loading rate and sample solution pH were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curves were linear in the range of 0.30-60 ng mL−1 with the determination coefficients (R2) of 0.9996-0.9998 for water samples and in the range of 0.60-60 ng mL−1 with the R2 values from 0.9990 to 0.9996 for beverage samples. At the signal to noise ratio of 3 (S/N = 3), the method LODs for the analytes were 0.10-0.15 ng mL−1 for water samples and 0.20-0.50 ng mL−1 for lemon black tea beverage, respectively. Good repeatability was achieved with the relative standard deviations of less than 7%. The results showed that the SPE-HPLC method can be used for the determination of chlorophenols in environmental water and foodstuffs samples.

Mitral valve reconstruction for active and healed endocarditis.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Mitral valve reconstruction rather than replacement for mitral insufficiency offers a number of well-accepted benefits. However, the feasibility and results of reconstruction for endocarditis remain largely unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS We reviewed 22 consecutive patients referred to the Thoracic Surgical Service at the University of Michigan from January 1, 1991, through October 1, 1995, who underwent mitral valve reconstruction for mitral insufficiency caused by isolated mitral valve endocarditis. Mean age, preoperative ejection fraction, and New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class were 53 +/- 15 years, 54 +/- 12%, and 3.2 +/- 0.8, respectively. Seven patients had early operation because of septic embolization, persistent infection, or refractory heart failure. Fifteen were cured of infection and were operated on for progressive symptomatic heart failure and left ventricular dilation. Preoperative transesophageal echocardiograms demonstrated severe mitral insufficiency in 20 patients. Valvular pathology noted at operation included annular (6 patients) or leaflet calcification (2), chordal rupture (13), leaflet vegetations (11), annular abscess (3), annular dilation (18), flail leaflet (12), leaflet prolapse (17), chordal shortening (1), and mitral stenosis (1). Mitral valve reconstruction included debridement of infected tissue and implantation of an annuloplasty ring (20 of 22 patients), as well as other complex techniques. Postrepair transesophageal echocardiograms demonstrated mild mitral insufficiency in 6 patients and none in 16 patients. There were no operative or in hospital deaths. Mean follow-up was 20 +/- 14 months. One late death occurred at 30 months. At follow-up, 90% of surviving patients were in NYHA functional class I or II. CONCLUSIONS Mitral valve reconstruction for active or healed endocarditis can be performed with low operative morbidity and mortality and yields excellent functional results. Although longer-term follow-up is mandatory, these data support strong consideration of mitral valve reconstruction rather than mitral valve replacement for mitral insufficiency secondary to endocarditis.
Facile synthesis of spherical covalent organic frameworks for enrichment and quantification of aryl organophosphate esters in mouse serum and tissues

Abstract:Here, an imine‐linked‐based spherical covalent organic framework (COF) was prepared at room temperature. The as‐synthesized spherical COF served as an adsorbent in dispersive solid‐phase extraction (dSPE), by its virtue of great surface area (1542.68 m2/g), regular distribution of pore size (2.95 nm), and excellent stability. Therefore, a simple and high‐efficiency dispersive solid phase extraction method based on a spherical COF coupled with high‐performance liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC‐MS/MS) was established to determine aryl organophosphate esters in biological samples. This approach displayed favorable linearity in the range of 10.0–1000.0 ng/L (r > 0.9989), a high signal enhancement factor (58.8–181.8 folds) with low limits of detection (0.3–3.3 ng/L). Moreover, it could effectively eliminate complex matrix interference to accurately extract seven aryl organophosphate esters from mouse serum and tissue samples with spiked recoveries of 82.0%–117.4%. The as‐synthesized spherical COF has been successfully applied in sample preparation. The dSPE‐HPLC‐MS/MS method based on a spherical COF has potential application to study the pollutants' metabolism in vivo.

Abstract:In this study, monodisperse, uniform, and spherical covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were synthesized using 1,3,5‐tris (4‐aminophenyl) benzene and 1,3,5‐tricarboxaldehyde benzene at room temperature. Post‐modification of 6‐aminocaproic acid on the COFs yielded carboxyl‐modified COFs (COFs‐COOH). The modification enhanced the hydrophilicity and adsorption efficiencies of COFs‐COOH for malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV). A COFs‐COOH‐based dispersive solid‐phase extraction coupled with high‐performance liquid chromatography was developed for the analysis of MG and CV. The method showed a linear range from 10 to 1000 ng/mL with detection limits of 1.82 and 0.70 ng/mL for MG and CV detection, respectively. The recoveries of MG and CV from water samples collected from fish farms and markets ranged from 91.63% to 107.10% with relative standard deviations below 5%. Reproducibility tests demonstrated that the adsorption efficiencies of COFs‐COOH were maintained at above 85.86% over 15 cycles. The study verified the potential of COFs‐COOH as sorbents for the enrichment and separation of triphenylmethane dyes from complex samples.

Abstract:Herein, we introduce a modulation strategy for the synthesis of imine based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) via the condensation of benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde with 1,3,5-tris (4-aminophenyl) benzene, whereby aniline was adopted as the monofunctional competitor. The introduction of aniline resulted in an enhanced crystallinity, surface area and pore volume, which is beneficial for the enrichment capability of the resulting COFs for the analytes. The optimized COF with the best extraction ability was selected as the solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from honey samples. The adsorbed PAHs were then analyzed by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. The merits for the method include: (a) low limits of detection (0.06-0.17 ng/g, S/N = 3), (b) high enrichment factors (290-1566-fold), good reproducibility (relative standard deviations less than 8.4%) and excellent method recoveries for the PAHs (83.0%-116.0%). The enrichment performance of the COFs towards the PAHs could be attributed to the hydrophobic interaction, the high surface area and pore volume of the COF materials.

Abstract:Waters contaminated with pesticides poses a potential hazard to ecosystems and human health, so sensitive and efficient analytical methods are essential for water monitoring. Herein, in order to efficiently extract six commonly used herbicides, a novel ionic liquid covalent organic framework (IL@COF) was prepared using a simple room-temperature synthesis in this study. As an adsorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE), the mesoporous material exhibits rapid adsorption performance for six typical herbicides from water samples. Under the optimal experimental conditions, wide linearities (500 similar to 20,000 mu g L-1) and low limits of detection (prometryn: 17.9 mu g L-1; metribuzin: 36.7 mu g L-1; bentazon: 14.5 mu g L-1; isoproturon: 18.0 mu g L-1; acetochlor: 19.6 mu g L-1; butachlor: 37.1 mu g L-1) for six analytes were obtained via high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The adsorbent has stable physical and chemical properties and can be reused for 10 times after effective elution. The applicability of this method is further evaluated by analyzing ten kinds of real water sample. The recoveries of six kinds of herbicides ranged from 85.3 % to 122.9 %. The mechanism of adsorption is the interaction between hydrogen bond acceptor and donor. These results indicate that HPLC after SPE with a new type of IL@COF as the SPE adsorbent is a promising technique for the simultaneous detection of six pesticides in environmental water samples.
