Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

Abstract:The emerging global water crisis necessitates the development of solid adsorbents for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater. Herein, we develop an anionic sulfonate-functionalized covalent organic framework (COF), termed TpStb-SO 3 Na, by the Schiff-base condensation between 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 4,4′-diaminostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid (Stb-SO 3 H) under solvothermal conditions in the presence of sodium acetate. Thanks to the dense sulfonate groups in the periodic one-dimensional channels, the negatively charged TpStb-SO 3 Na displayed rapid kinetics (average ∼ 99% uptake in merely 10 min) and ultrahigh adsorption capacities for multiple cationic dyes including methylene blue (MB, 1078 mg g −1 ), crystal violet (CV, 1861 mg g −1 ), malachite green (MG, 5857 mg g −1 ) and janus green B (JGB, 1339 mg g −1 ) at room temperature. Noteworthy, the adsorption capacities of TpStb-SO 3 Na toward CV, MG, and JGB were the record-high values among the documented COFs, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and other benchmark adsorbents. In addition, the adsorption behaviors of MB, CV, MG, and JGB on TpStb-SO 3 Na obeyed the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model. On the contrary, TpStb-SO 3 Na presented low adsorption capacity for anionic dyes like methyl orange (MO) and fluorescein sodium (FS), rendering it a promising sorbent for the separation of cationic and anionic dyes based on charge difference. Furthermore, TpStb-SO 3 Na was easily regenerated and reused for five cycles with no obvious loss in its adsorption performance. This work uncovers the vast potential of anionic COFs for the effective removal of organic dye pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract:Many environmental pollutants inherently exist in their anionic forms and are therefore highly mobile in natural water systems. Cationic framework materials that can capture those pollutants are highly desirable but scarcely reported. Here we present a mesoporous cationic thorium-based MOF (SCU-8) containing channels with a large inner diameter of 2.2 nm and possessing a high surface area of 1360 m 2 g −1 . The anion-exchange properties of SCU-8 were explored with many anions including small oxo anions like ReO 4 − and Cr 2 O 7 2− as well as anionic organic dyes like methyl blue and the persistent organic pollutant, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Both fast uptake kinetics and great sorption selectivity toward PFOS are observed. The underlying sorption mechanism was probed using quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics simulations. These computational results reveal that PFOS anions are immobilized in SCU-8 by driving forces including electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and van der Waals interactions at different adsorption stages.

Abstract:Rationally designing porous materials with excellent hydrophiLic performance for the selective removal of contaminants from wastewaters before discharge into the environment is highly desirable but still faces challenges. Herein, to address the shuttle issue, a hydrophiLic covaLent organic framework (BTA-BDSA-COF) was synthesized by introducing multi-sulfonated groups into a covaLent framework structure and its potential applications in cationic dye capture have been evaluated in detail. Topological modulation and structural characteristics reveal the following: (1) a regular single-pore (SP) framework of BTA-BDSA-COF is constructed which is distinguishable from most reported COFs, with a condensation of D-2h symmetry and ditopic Linear diamine budding blocks. (2) BTA-BDSA-COF undergoing excellent hydrophilicity outperforms other studied COFs functioned with sulfonated groups. Furthermore, dye sorption selectivity and kinetic studies clearly state the following: (1) the hydrophiLic feature of anionic BTA-BDSA-COF is a significant driving force to ameliorate the adsorption ability of cationic dyes. (2) The degree of match between the size of the BTA-BDSA-COF pore aperture and the volume of dye molecule is intimately related to the dye adsorption properties. Therefore, BTA-BDSA-COF exhibits an impressive MLB adsorptive capacity of 1280 mg g(-1) and a quick adsorption equilibrium of 30 min, owing to the moderately hydrophiLic pore environment of BTA-BDSA-COF. Successful application in real water samples suggests that BTA-BDSA-COF with moderate hydrophilicity would be a promising adsorbent candidate for practical cationic dye capture.
Nitrogen-rich covalent triazine frameworks for high-efficient removal of anion dyes and the synergistic adsorption of cationic dyes

Abstract:Efficient adsorption of organic dyes from effluent has great importance for ecological and environmental protection. Herein, covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) were constructed via the polycondensation of melamine and cyanuric chloride directly. Due to the numerous basic nitrogen atoms as high as 58.98 wt%, high BET surface area (670.2 m·g-1), and hierarchical pore structure, CTFs demonstrated selective adsorption of anionic dyes in high capacity (e.g., a maximum adsorption capacity of 1581 mg·g-1 for Congo red at 30 oC). The mechanism of the outstanding adsorption performance was carefully verified and ascribed to the electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding between CTFs and anionic dyes. The amine groups linking two adjacent triazine rings have primary responsibility for the superior performance. Unexpectedly, CTFs expressed a tuning synergetic effect for removing cationic dyes in aqueous solution coexisting with anionic dyes, exhibiting a great superiority in the specific and comprehensive treatment of organic dyes contaminated water. Furthermore, CTFs were stable and had long-periodic availability for more than 6 times, ensuring the adsorption rate higher than 90%. For better operation, hybrid monolithic aerogels were constructed by incorporating CTFs into polyvinylidene fluoride then casting in melamine resin foams. The obtained aerogels expressed high-efficient removal of anionic dyes coupled with convenient operation. This well-established metal-free porous material is a promising adsorbent candidate for anionic dyes selectively and even synergetic adsorption of cationic dyes in water remediation.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with designable structure and well-defined aperture are highly desired as novel adsorbents for elimination of dye pollution. Herein, a new carboxyl-functionalized covalent organic framework (TzDABA COF) with clover-like topology was synthesized by the condensation of 1,3,5-tris(4-formyl-phenyl) triazine (Tz) and 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) under solvothermal conditions. The obtained TzDABA COF exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics and excellent adsorption capacities toward multiple cationic organic dyes including methylene blue (MB, 315 mg g−1), crystal violet (CV, 533 mg g−1) and malachite green (MG, 1168 mg g−1) owing to the formation of strong electrostatic interaction and π-π interaction between COF framework and organic dye molecules. Remarkably, with particular ABC stacking mode and an abundant of carboxyl functional groups integrated in the clover-like architecture, the anionic TzDABA COF could effectively separate organic dyes in different modes, representing the first case of carboxyl-functionalized clover-like COF for dye separation based on charge effect and size effect. This study paves a new pathway toward construction of carboxyl-functionalized clover-like COFs and reveals their desiring prospect in field of dyes separation and purification.

Abstract:The treatment of dyeing wastewater has been a major issue of environmental pollution at present. Adsorption is one of the more feasible methods, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a class of emerging porous materials have been widely utilized in adsorptive removal of organic dyes. Herein, we designed and synthesized a Cd-MOF {[Cd2(BPTC)(H2O)6]·2H2O}n (H4BPTC = 3,3′,5,5′-biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid) to investigate the correlation of size-exclusion and charge-matching effect between MOFs adsorbents and dye molecules. X-ray single crystal diffraction indicated that Cd-MOF exhibits a unique double-layered helical coordination framework with tetramer water moieties accommodated in the open channels. Zeta-potential of Cd-MOF revealed it a negative charged framework that preferred electrostatic interactions with cationic dye particles, which endorsed Cd-MOF good adsorption capacities to cationic dyes especially methylene blue (MB) with the highest adsorption capacity of 595.4 mg g–1 at pH = 7.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new type of crystalline porous polymers known for chemical stability, excellent structural regularity, robust framework, and inherent porosity, making them promising materials for capturing various types of pollutants from aqueous solutions. This review thoroughly presents the recent progress and advances of COFs and COF-based materials as superior adsorbents for the efficient removal of toxic heavy metal ions, radionuclides, and organic pollutants. Information about the interaction mechanisms between various pollutants and COF-based materials are summarized from the macroscopic and microscopic standpoints, including batch experiments, theoretical calculations, and advanced spectroscopy analysis. The adsorption properties of various COF-based materials are assessed and compared with other widely used adsorbents. Several commonly used strategies to enhance COF-based materials' adsorption performance and the relationship between structural property and sorption ability are also discussed. Finally, a summary and perspective on the opportunities and challenges of COFs and COF-based materials are proposed to provide some inspiring information on designing and fabricating COFs and COF-based materials for environmental pollution management.

A Carboxyl‐Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework Synthesized in a Deep Eutectic Solvent for Dye Adsorption

Abstract:Instead of the use of organic solvents, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of tetrabutylammonium bromide and imidazole (Bu 4 NBr/Im) was employed as a solvent for the first time to synthesize covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Due to the low vapor pressure of the Bu 4 NBr/Im‐based DES, a new carboxyl‐functionalized COF (TpPa‐COOH) was synthesized under the environmental pressure. The as‐synthesized TpPa‐COOH has open channels and the DES can be removed completely from the pores. The dye adsorption performance of TpPa‐COOH was examined for three organic dyes with similar molecular sizes, including one anionic dye (eosin B, EB) and two cationic dyes (methylene blue, MB; safranine T, ST). TpPa‐COOH showed an excellent selective adsorption effect on MB and ST. The electronegative keto form in TpPa‐COOH may help to form electrostatic and π–π interactions between the π–stacking frameworks of TpPa‐COOH and the positive plane MB and ST molecules. The adsorption isotherms of MB and ST on TpPa‐COOH were further investigated in detail and the equilibrium adsorption was well‐modeled by using Langmuir isotherm model. Together with hydrogen bonding, TpPa‐COOH showed higher adsorption capacity for ST than that for MB (1135 vs 410 mg/g). These results could provide a guidance for the green synthesis of adsorbents in removing organic dyes from wastewater.

Abstract:The development of effective solid adsorbents is necessary to remove organic pollutants from wastewater in response to the global water crisis. The present study investigates the adsorption behavior of dye pollutants on a 1, 3, 6, 8-tetrakis (4formylphenyl) pyrene (TFPPy) for the self-assembly of an innovative three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Molecular dynamics (MD) and the well-tempered metadynamics simulation were used to evaluate the ability of COFs to adsorb seven types of dye pollutants (DPs). These include methyl orange (MO), gentian violet (GV), brilliant green (BG), tolonium chloride (TC), methylene blue (MB), anionic congo red (CR), and rhodamine B (Rh B). To examine this process, several descriptors are calculated from the simulation trajectories, including interaction energies, root-mean-square deviation, radial distribution function, solvent-accessible surface area, mean square displacement, and the number of hydrogen bonds to figure out the process. After analyzing the data, it was found that the MO/COFs system displayed exceptional stability. It was confirmed by a significant value of −448.54 KJmol −1 for total interaction energy. The density profile of dye molecules in the MO and Rh B-COFs systems exhibits the highest peaks at approximately 325.79, and 26.75 kg/m3, respectively. The free energy values for the DPs/COFs complexes at their global minima reached about, −512.127, −435.603, −381.244, −300.313, and −283.230 kJmol -1 for MO/GV/BG/TC/ and Rh B with the COFs, respectively. The nature of the design of TFFPy-COF's unique, ultrafast kinetics, high adsorption capacity, and good reusability endow them with great potential for removing dyes in an aqueous environment.

A novel hydroxyl-riched covalent organic framework as an advanced adsorbent for the adsorption of anionic azo dyes

Abstract:Considering the highly carcinogenic and mutagenic of anionic azo dyes to the environment and humans, the development of high efficiency adsorbent for them are of great significance. In this study, a novel hydroxyl-riched covalent organic framework (denoted as COF-OH), which can act as an advance adsorbent for anionic azo dyes, was fabricated for the first time. The as-prepared COF-OH demonstrated good dispersion in water, remarkable adsorption performances and good selectivity for anionic azo dyes including eriochrome black T, eriochrome blue black R and congo red. The adsorption capacities of them ranged from 90.71 to 229.12 mg g-1, and the extraction efficiencies of them (>75.91%) were much higher than other dyes (e.g. Methylene blue, direct red 80, 1.46%-39.57%). By optimizing the adsorption conditions (adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, pH, and salt concentration) and desorption conditions (desorption solvent, desorption time and desorption frequency), a dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) method was developed. Further, coupled D-μ-SPE with HPLC-PDA analysis, an effective method was fabricated for the extraction and detection of three selected dyes. The method showed good linearity in the range of 0.1-200 μg mL-1 (R2 > 0.9966), low limits of quantification (0.10 μg mL-1-2.00 μg mL-1), low limits of detection (0.03-1.50 μg mL-1) and good precision. Finally, the COF-OH based D-μ-SPE was successfully applied to extract three selected dyes from water samples (recoveries ranged from 73.90 to 104.00%) and congo red from beverages (recoveries ranged from 81.40 to 111.80%). Besides, by using computer simulation, FT-IR and UV-vis analysis, the adsorption mechanisms of COF-OH to three selected dyes were explored preliminarily.
Crystalline Covalent Organic Frameworks from Triazine Nodes as Porous Adsorbents for Dye Pollutants

Abstract:The development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with nodes and spacers, designed to maximize their functional properties, is a challenge. Triazines exhibit better electron affinity than benzene-based aromatic rings; therefore, structures based on 1,3,5-substituted triazine-centered nodes are more stable than those from 1,3,5-benzene-linked COFs. Compared to COFs prepared from flat, rigid sp2 carbon-linked triazine nodes, the O-linked flexible tripodal triazine-based COF demonstrates several unpredictable properties such as an increase in crystallinity and cavity size. In this study, the COF prepared from O-linked flexible 2,4,6-tris(p-formylphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine serves as an excellent absorbent for removing methylene blue from water. Our results demonstrate that COF is highly stable in water and functions as a robust adsorbent. Its adsorption isotherm is consistent with the Langmuir model and its adsorption kinetics follows a pseudo-second order model. Moreover, the COF was characterized using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, solid-state ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. It exhibited permanent porosity, a high specific surface area (279.5 m2·g–1), and was chemically and thermally stable. Photophysical studies revealed that the COF exhibits a low bandgap energy value of 3.07 eV, indicating its semiconducting nature.

Abstract:Until now, to remove the harmful organic dyes from effluents is an outstanding challenge. The design and synthesis of new porous materials capable of selectively adsorbing dyes are critical to the environment and human health. Here, a unique cluster-based cationic metal-organic framework, named {[Zn8(BTA)6(L)5Cl2]·(NO3)3}·5DMF (NUM-4) was synthesized, which displays one-dimensional (1D) open channels along a axis in its 3D supramolecular stacking structure. Benefiting from the nature of cationic framework and high surface area/pore volume, NUM-4 shows rapid and selective adsorption of anionic dyes (MO, AO, CR and MB) based on the charge-exclusive effect. Besides, the adsorbed dyes can be easily released in NH4Cl saturated solution of ethanol.

Abstract:A porphyrin-based two-dimensional covalent organic framework (TPE-Por-COF) with high stability was synthesized, and the adsorption performance of TPE-Por-COF on organic dyes was studied. The TPE-Por-COF was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetry and N-2 adsorption isotherms. TPE-Por-COF has adsorption effect on five dyes: malachite green (MG), methyl violet (MV) and rhodamine B (RhB), coomassie brilliant blue (CBB) and brilliant green (BG). Among them, TPE-Por-COF has the most obvious adsorption effect on malachite green, and the adsorption capacity is as high as 1428.57 mg g(-1). In addition, the CO2 adsorption capacity of TPE-Por-COF is 187 mg g-1 at 50 bar and 323 K.
Novel three-dimensional fibrous covalent organic frameworks constructed via silver amalgam bridging for efficient organic dye adsorption and removal

Abstract:The construction of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with unique structures has great significance in exploring the structure-function relationship and extending their potential applications. Fibrous COFs have demonstrated superior performance in specific application scenarios owing to the distinctive three-dimensional (3D) structure. Herein, we report a facile strategy for the fabrication of 3D COF nanofiber by exploiting silver amalgam as a bridging agent to assemble one-dimensional-extended PA-COF modules into a tubular structure. Dimensions of the obtained 3D COF nanofiber were predicted by DFT calculations, and the nanofiber was endowed with the merits of favorable uniformity and high stability. Due to the enhanced exposure of conjugatable binding sites for dye retention offered by the novel 3D architecture, the PA-COF nanofiber exhibits fast adsorption (within 5 min) and superior adsorption capacity to various organic dyes, e.g., 1717 mg g-1 for methylene blue (MB) and 978.3 mg g-1 for methyl orange (MO). Moreover, the PA-COF nanofiber shows excellent reusability in dye adsorption, which makes it a potential medium for removing dye pollutants from wastewater. This work presents an effective strategy to construct COF materials with unique architecture and potential prospects in the fields of separation and wastewater treatment.
Bimetallic Cationic Metal–Organic Frameworks for Selective Dye Adsorption and Effective Cr 2 O 7 2– Removal

Abstract:Herein, we developed a strategy of rational constructing bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and at the same time embedding charges on backbones. Based on the Pearson's hard/soft acid/base (HSAB) principle, soft base (azolate) and hard base (carboxylate) were simultaneously implanted in one building block for MOF construction, which can preferentially coordinate with relative soft acid Cu2+ and hard acid Zr4+ (or Hf4+), respectively. This combination during the self-assembly process not only generates robust coordination bonds but also leaves net charges at the metal clusters, presenting a method for rational design of bimetallic cationic MOFs. Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted extensive attention as promising materials for the elimination of various organic pollutants due to their high surface area, inherent porosity and tailorable functionality. However, powdery COFs are difficult to separate and reuse, which greatly limits its practical applications. Herein, a β-cyclodextrin functionalized imine COF (β-CD-COF) aerogel with good crystallinity and chemical stability was synthesized by the Schiff base reaction using a one-pot method for efficient removal of anionic and cationic dyes from water. The prepared β-CD-COF aerogel has a macroscopic three-dimensional bulk and hierarchical porous structure, which is conducive to adsorption and recovery, and it not only showed high adsorption capacity and fast binding kinetics for single anionic and cationic dyes (3403.91 mg g-1 for methyl orange (MO) and 2199.37 mg g-1 for methylene blue (MB)), but also exhibited outstanding simultaneous adsorption capacity in different binary and ternary pollutant systems. Additionally, the β-CD-COF aerogel showed good reusability for the co-adsorption of MO and MB. These results demonstrate the great potential of β-CD-COF aerogels for the simultaneous removal of anionic and cationic dyes in environmental applications.
