Abstract:Due to complexity of turbulence in curved duct and difficulty of free surface treatment,it is not easy to simulate three-dimensional motion of turbulence in curved duct precisely.In the case of turbulence in curved circular duct,VOF method is applied to track the flow surface and RNG k-e turbulent model is adopted to simulate the turbulence characteristics.The curvilinear free surface,velocity,turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent dissipation rate are obtained.The computational results are in good agreement with the experimental data on the basis of the comparison between them.

Abstract:In this paper, we review some recent studies on compressible turbulence conducted by the authors’ group,which include fundamental studies on compressible isotropic turbulence（CIT） and applied studies on developing a constrained large eddy simulation（CLES） for wall-bounded turbulence. In the first part, we begin with a newly proposed hybrid compact–weighted essentially nonoscillatory（WENO） scheme for a CIT simulation that has been used to construct a systematic database of CIT. Using this database various fundamental properties of compressible turbulence have been examined, including the statistics and scaling of compressible modes, the shocklet–turbulence interaction, the effect of local compressibility on small scales, the kinetic energy cascade, and some preliminary results from a Lagrangian point of view. In the second part, the idea and formulas of the CLES are reviewed, followed by the validations of CLES and some applications in compressible engineering problems.

Abstract:The main thrust of this work is developing the basis for a mixed formulation of turbulence modeling, combining analytical theories and engineering modeling, which includes second order two-point correlations of velocity and pressure. Related issues such as the different outcomes that stem from differently chosen sets of ensemble averaging, the approximate nature and the advantages and disadvantages of such a formulation, and the choices of closure schemes are addressed.

Abstract:The standard eddy viscosity model is commonly used to simulate turbulence, but there exist difficulties in simulating the backscatter of the non-statistical equilibrium turbulence. In this work, we construct a novel modified eddy viscosity model based on a simplified Cebeci–Smith equation, which is applied to the non-equilibrium turbulence. Moreover, we analyze some properties of the model and propose a fully discrete scheme, which is proven to be stable and convergent. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to test the theoretical prediction of the proposed scheme, and intermittent backscatter is captured and observed by simulating the established model.

Abstract:Data from experiments and direct simulations of turbulence have historically been used to calibrate simple engineering models such as those based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier--Stokes (RANS) equations. In the past few years, with the availability of large and diverse datasets, researchers have begun to explore methods to systematically inform turbulence models with data, with the goal of quantifying and reducing model uncertainties. This review surveys recent developments in bounding uncertainties in RANS models via physical constraints, in adopting statistical inference to characterize model coefficients and estimate discrepancy, and in using machine learning to improve turbulence models. Key principles, achievements and challenges are discussed. A central perspective advocated in this review is that by exploiting foundational knowledge in turbulence modeling and physical constraints, data-driven approaches can yield useful predictive models.

An Old-Fashioned Framework for Machine Learning in Turbulence Modeling

Abstract:The objective is to provide clear and well-motivated guidance to Machine Learning (ML) teams, founded on our experience in empirical turbulence modeling. Guidance is also needed for modeling outside ML. ML is not yet successful in turbulence modeling, and many papers have produced unusable proposals either due to errors in math or physics, or to severe overfitting. We believe that "Turbulence Culture" (TC) takes years to learn and is difficult to convey especially considering the modern lack of time for careful study; important facts which are self-evident after a career in turbulence research and modeling and extensive reading are easy to miss. In addition, many of them are not absolute facts, a consequence of the gaps in our understanding of turbulence and the weak connection of models to first principles. Some of the mathematical facts are rigorous, but the physical aspects often are not. Turbulence models are surprisingly arbitrary. Disagreement between experts confuses the new entrants. In addition, several key properties of the models are ascertained through non-trivial analytical properties of the differential equations, which puts them out of reach of purely data-driven ML-type approaches. The best example is the crucial behavior of the model at the edge of the turbulent region (ETR). The knowledge we wish to put out here may be divided into "Mission" and "Requirements," each combining physics and mathematics. Clear lists of "Hard" and "Soft" constraints are presented. A concrete example of how DNS data could be used, possibly allied with ML, is first carried through and illustrates the large number of decisions needed. Our focus is on creating effective products which will empower CFD, rather than on publications.

Abstract:In order to explore the turbulence modulation by cylindrical particles, the equation describing the probability density functions for the particle orientation, and the equations of Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation rate with additional terms of particles are used and solved numerically in a round jet flow. The turbulence modulation at different axial distances from the nozzle exit in the initial region is given, and the effects of particle concentration, particle aspect ratio and Reynolds number on the mean streamwise velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulent viscosity are analyzed for the particle mass concentrations ranged from 0 to 0.01%, Reynolds number ranged from 4000 to 13000, and particle aspect ratio ranged from 5 to 35. The results show that the critical parameter used to explain the increase or decrease of turbulent intensity caused by the addition of spherical particles is not suitable to explain the case of cylindrical particles. The particles injected in the flow have the effect of delaying the centerline mean axial velocity decay with increasing axial distance. This phenomenon is more obvious in the case of high particle concentration. The turbulence intensity enhancement caused by cylindrical particles is less downstream than near the nozzle exit. The cylindrical particle injection will enhance the turbulence intensity, and the degree of enhancement is position dependent and directly proportional to the particle concentration, Reynolds number and particle aspect ratio.

Abstract:The present paper aims at improving the modeling of turbulence for the upward turbulent bubbly flow through the use of experimental databases that contain data on small and large vertical ducts. First, the role of bubble-induced turbulence was analyzed, which indicated the dominant role of the bubble-induced turbulence in the duct center for relatively high void fraction cases. Therefore, the turbulence therein was mainly focused on, which indicated that the stronger turbulence could be induced by bubbles in large ducts with similar void fractions as compared to that in small ducts. Next, the turbulence of upward turbulent bubbly flow near the wall is discussed to understand the interaction between the wall-induced and bubble-induced turbulence. It showed that the existence of a wall could suppress the bubble-induced turbulence given the same void fraction, and the existence of bubbles could also suppress the solely wall-induced turbulence as compared to the single-phase turbulent flow, even though the total turbulence is enhanced. The above characteristics indicated that the current turbulence modeling method needs to be modified, especially when the bubble-induced turbulence plays a dominant role.

Abstract:Abstract This work models the spatial decay of freestream turbulence using three different commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes: Fluent, star-ccm+, and cfx. The two-equation shear stress transport k–ω (SST-k–ω) steady Reynolds-averaged-Navier–Stokes (RANS) model was used, within each of these three different commercial codes, and the modeling variations were analyzed. Comparison of the results from the SST-k–ω model with experiments and large eddy simulation (LES) (carried out using star-ccm+) were also made, which reveal that all the commercial CFD codes demonstrate either a higher or slower rate of spatial turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) decay. Attempts were then made to unify the resultant modeling approach between these three CFD tools, by careful manipulation of the inlet boundary conditions and subsequent fine-tuning of the SST-k–ω model constant (β∞∗). The results obtained not only displayed uniformity among the three CFD codes but also demonstrated a much better agreement to the experiments and the LES results. Thereafter, the optimized model coefficient (β∞∗) was integrated with the three-equation k–kl–ω transition model to examine its applicability in modeling a turbulent boundary layer flow over a flat plate with low incoming turbulence. The results showed good agreement with the theoretical boundary layer correlations, with correct prediction of the transition location. The findings from this study can be used as a suitable modeling method to accurately model the effects of freestream turbulence on bluff-body and boundary layer flows.

Abstract:This paper exposes a novel exploratory formalism, which end goal is the numerical simulation of the dynamics of a cloud of particles weakly or strongly coupled with a turbulent fluid. Giventhe large panel of expertise of the list of authors, the content of this paper scans a wide range of connexnotions, from the physics of turbulence to the rigorous definition of stochastic processes. Our approachis to develop reduced-order models for the dynamics of both carrying and carried phases which remainconsistant within this formalism, and to set up a numerical process to validate these models. Thenovelties of this paper lie in the gathering of a large panel of mathematical and physical definitionsand results within a common framework and an agreed vocabulary (sections 1 and 2), and in somepreliminary results and achievements within this context, section 3. While the first three sections havebeen simplified to the context of a gas field providing that the disperse phase only retrieves energythrough drag, the fourth section opens this study to the more complex situation when the dispersephase interacts with the continuous phase as well, in an energy conservative manner. This will allowus to expose the perspectives of the project and to conclude.

Modeling Turbulence in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer with Spectral Element and Finite Volume Methods

Abstract:We present large-eddy-simulation (LES) modeling approaches for the simulation of atmospheric boundary layer turbulence that are of direct relevance to wind energy production. In this paper, we study a GABLS benchmark problem using high-order spectral element code Nek5000/RS and a block-structured second-order finite-volume code AMR-Wind which are supported under the DOE's Exascale Computing Project (ECP) Center for Efficient Exascale Discretizations (CEED) and ExaWind projects, respectively, targeting application simulations on various acceleration-device based exascale computing platforms. As for Nek5000/RS we demonstrate our newly developed subgrid-scale (SGS) models based on mean-field eddy viscosity (MFEV), high-pass filter (HPF), and Smagorinsky (SMG) with traction boundary conditions. For the traction boundary conditions, a novel analytical approach is presented that solves for the surface friction velocity and surface kinematic temperature flux. For AMR-Wind, standard SMG is used and discussed in detail the traction boundary conditions for convergence. We provide low-order statistics, convergence and turbulent structure analysis. Verification and convergence studies were performed for both codes at various resolutions and it was found that Nek5000/RS demonstrate convergence with resolution for all ABL bulk parameters, including boundary layer and low level jet (LLJ) height. Extensive comparisons are presented with simulation data from the literature.

Abstract:The present work is dedicated to the study of multiphase turbulent and three-dimensional rotational flow in dust cyclones, a contribution to air pollution control. Cyclones are widely used devices for the separation of constituents from solid-gas mixtures in industry. In order to improve the filtration efficiency of cyclones, and to reduce the pressure drop, parametric numerical simulation studies using the Fluent code have been conducted to characterise the effects of the parameters affecting the operation of these devices through their performance indicators. In this work, the effect of inlet velocity and the particle size on the turbulent flow air in the cyclone is presented. Numerical simulation of the flow by Fluent code using three numerical models: the first based on the dissipation of kinetic energy by viscosity (RNG) K-epsilon and standard K-epsilon as well as the last based on the solution of Reynolds stress equations (RSM), combined with the multiphase mixing model, gave interesting results in terms of the pressure and flow field in the separator, the variation of inlet velocity, and the variation of particle size. Validation with experimental and empirical results showed the advantage of the Reynolds stress turbulence model (RSM) over the standard K-epsilon and RNG K-epsilon. The RSM model better captures physical phenomena in an intense vortex flow in the presence of walls. But it is characterised by a very long calculation time and requires large machine resources. An alternative to this model is RNG K-epsilon model, which offers a reasonable calculation time with acceptable results (maximum deviation of 5 % ) for speed values below 10 m/s. In the absence of numerical resources, certain empirical models such as those of First (for the evaluation of pressure drop) and Iozia and Leith (for evaluation of efficiency) may well be useful for the dimensioning of the cyclone.
Turbulence and Bifurcation in the Motion of an Hydrocyclone

Abstract:The hydrocyclone is a tool used in different fields but mostly in mining industries to separate minerals. The minerals are put in a liquid or in a stable suspension of a chosen density which must be less than the density of the heavier minerals and greater than that of the lighter minerals. Because of the effect of the walls the flow in a hydrocyclone is the result of a movement of confined swirling (vortex) and recirculating flow, which are generated by the difference of the means. We study turbulence and bifurcation in the motion of the Hydrocyclone by using the Navier-Stokes for the conservation of the mass and of the momentum. These equations are numerically solved with the finite element method (FEM) and the $k-\epsilon$ model. Our FEM results are in quite good agreement with the experimental data. Finally, we introduce a simple 3D family of maps which models very well the behaviour of the trajectories of the light and heavy particles in the Hydrocyclone.

Abstract:The presence of a dispersed phase substantially modifies small-scale turbulence. However, there has not been a comprehensive mechanistically-based understanding to predict turbulence modulation. Based on the energy flux balance, we propose a theoretical model to predict the turbulent kinetic energy modulation in isotropic turbulence due to the dispersed phase. The comparison between model predictions and results from particle-resolved simulations and high-fidelity experiments validates the performance of the model over a wide range of turbulence and particle parameters.

Abstract:It is known that turbulence model is the most diffi-cult bottleneck for achieving high quality aerodynamics computations , or computational fluid dynamics ( CFD) . Here, we report the results of a 973 project, targeting in improving the understanding of mean flow properties of turbulence from a synthesized cooperation of theoreti-cal, experimental and computational efforts .Theoreti-cally , we have developed a new approach , called struc-tural ensemble dynamics ( SED) , which has achieved a breakthrough in finding solutions to modeling wall-bounded flows relevant to aerodynamics computations . The SED generalizes the Landau's mean-field theory to non-equilibrium situations by developing a concept of order function which obeys proper Lie-group symmetry. The theory predicts a multi-layer structure for general wall-bounded flows and develops a series of methods quantifying the multi-layer structure , yielding analytic prediction for mean velocity , mean kinetic energy and mean temperature .The predictions are in very good a-greement with empirical data from high precision experi-mental measurements and numerical simulations; the accuracy is unprecedented (99%).The most outstand-ing achievement is the identification of universal Kar-man constant, 0.45, for canonical wall-bounded flows ( channel, pipe and turbulent boundary layer ).The 973 project has also established a series of research platforms for performing compressible turbulence experi-ments and computations , and for aerodynamics CFD computations .These efforts have paved the way to de-veloping more sophisticated ( faster and more accurate ) CFD tools.

Abstract:A gas turbulence–solid turbulence model (k–ε–Θ–kp) was used to simulate the hydrodynamics in the entrance region of a downer. This model incorporates a k–ε turbulence model for gas phase, a kp turbulence model and a kinetic theory description of solid stresses characterized by granular temperature (Θ) for solid phase. The predicted profiles of local solids fraction and particle velocity have good agreement with the experimental data in a wide range of solids fraction. The solid pressure has a large gradient in the inlet region, which becomes a main driving force for the particles to move from the center to the wall. The sensitivity analysis shows that the inlet granular temperature has a large influence on the predicted results. Over the whole flow field, a clear relationship between the diffusion coefficient of particles and the local solids fraction is found, that is, a smaller solids fraction corresponds to a larger diffusion coefficient.

Abstract:Turbulent flows are characterized by the presence of "scales of fluctuations", or "structures" of varying magnitudes, the effects in which the mixing, transfer and dissipation of energy are preponderant. Most importantly, dissipation determines the depth profile of the flow. This contribution aims to implement a model able to predict unsteady turbulent flows generated by the presence of obstacles in a channel with complex geometry and to report, where the complexity of the phenomena are observed, such as: the separation of the boundary layer, the succession of vortices, local heat transfers, and the recirculation zones in the wake of obstacles and the oscillatory regime of the hydraulic jump for which this research is of exclusive interest. The current work therefore, presents the numerical simulation in unsteady turbulent regime based on the resolution of balance equations, using the RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes) approach with an RNG k−ε closure model. To solve the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations governing these flows, we appealed to the motivated finite volume method, and its ability to process complex geometries. The simulation software FLUENT we used is based on the finite volume method. It allows to explore, the velocity and pressure fields in the digital channel of the studied flows.

Abstract:This is an attempt to clarify and size up the many levels possible for the numerical prediction of a turbulent flow, the target being a complete airplane, turbine, or car. Not all the author's opinions will be accepted, but his hope is to stimulate reflection, discussion, and planning. These levels still range from a solution of the steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations to a Direct Numerical Simulation, with Large-Eddy Simulation in between. However recent years have added intermediate strategies, dubbed “VLES”, “URANS” and “DES”. They are in experimental use and, although more expensive, threaten complex RANS models especially for bluff-body and similar flows. Turbulence predictions in aerodynamics face two principal challenges: (I) growth and separation of the boundary layer, and (II) momentum transfer after separation. (I) is simpler, but makes very high accuracy demands, and appears to give models of higher complexity little advantage. (II) is now the arena for complex RANS models and the newer strategies, by which time-dependent three-dimensional simulations are the norm even over two-dimensional geometries. In some strategies, grid refinement is aimed at numerical accuracy; in others it is aimed at richer turbulence physics. In some approaches, the empirical constants play a strong role even when the grid is very fine; in others, their role vanishes. For several decades, practical methods will necessarily be RANS, possibly unsteady, or RANS/LES hybrids, pure LES being unaffordable. Their empirical content will remain substantial, and the law of the wall will be particularly resistant. Estimates are offered of the grid resolution needed for the application of each strategy to full-blown aerodynamic calculations, feeding into rough estimates of its feasibility date, based on computing-power growth.

Abstract:Dust explosions are among the most hazardous accidents affecting industrial facilities processing particulate solids. Describing the severity parameters of dust clouds is critical to the safety management and risk assessment of dust explosions. These parameters are determined experimentally in a 20L spherical vessel, following the ASTM E1226 or UNE 14034 standards. Since their reproducibility depends on the levels of turbulence associated with the dust cloud, a computational model of the multi-phase (gas-solid) flow is used to simulate the dispersion process with the open-source CFD code OpenFOAM. The model is successfully validated against experimental measurements from the literature and numerical results of a commercial CFD code. In addition, this study considers the impact of particle size on the turbulence of the carrier phase, suggesting that particles attenuate its turbulence intensity. Moreover, the model predicts well the formation of a two-vortex flow pattern, which has a negative impact on the distribution of the particle-laden flows with d<=100 um, as most of the particles concentrate at the near-wall region. Contrarily, an improved homogeneity of dust cloud is observed for a case fed with larger particles (d=200 um), as the increased inertia of these particles allows them to enter into the re-circulation regions.

Abstract:Plane turbulent jets are widely used in a variety of applications. Such as jets in drying processes, air curtains for room conditioning, heating, mixing, ventilating applications etc., therefore, jet flow is a very important research topic in both experimental and analytical research. Depending upon the position and forces acts on the jet, jets are broadly classified as turbulent free jet and turbulent wall jet. The studies conducted herein provide the comparison between various turbulence model present Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). Numerical approaches were used in the present investigation. CFD technique helped to understand better the hydrodynamics of the jet flow and correlate the numerical result. Among the all turbulence model studied, the k-ε turbulence model performed the best. Performance of k-ω model was found to be somewhat superior to Spalart-Allmaras and Reynolds stress model.
