Abstract:In this report, dysprosium substituted Ce1Y2Fe5O12 (Ce:YIG) thin films (Dy:CeYIG) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are successfully deposited on silicon and silicon-on-insulator waveguides by pulsed laser deposition. The structural, magnetic, and magneto-optical properties of Dy:CeYIG films are investigated. We find that increasing dysprosium concentration leads to a decreased out-of-plane magnetic saturation field. Dy2Ce1Fe5O12 and Dy2Ce1Al0.4Fe4.6O12 thin films show PMA dominated by magnetoelastic effects due to thermal mismatch strain. These films further exhibit high Faraday rotation and low optical loss. Our work demonstrates that Dy substitution is an effective way to induce PMA in Ce:YIG thin films without compromising their magneto-optical figure of merit, making this material promising for self-biased transverse electric mode optical isolator applications.

Abstract:Magneto-optical isolators are key components in photonic systems. Despite the progress of silicon-integrated optical isolators, the Faraday rotation of silicon-integrated magneto-optical materials, such as cerium-doped yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG), show a strong temperature dependence, limiting the temperature range for integrated nonreciprocal photonic device applications. In this work, we report dysprosium substituted Ce:YIG thin films (Dy2Ce1Fe5O12, Dy:CeIG) showing a low temperature coefficient of Faraday rotation. A temperature insensitive range of the Faraday rotation is observed in between 25 degrees C to 70 degrees C for this material, compared to 20% variation of the Faraday rotation in Ce:YIG thin films. A Dy:CeIG based temperature insensitive silicon-integrated optical isolator operating in the temperature range of 23 degrees C to 70 degrees C is experimentally demonstrated.
Mixed rare-earth iron garnet AYbBiIG single-crystals for high-performance optical isolation

Abstract:A new type of magneto-optical Faraday rotation iron garnet bulk single- crystal with composition of AYbBiIG (A:Tb 3+, Ho 3+, Y 3+, etc.) was designed and grown by using Bi 2O 3/B 2O 3 as main flux and using Accelerated Crucible Rotation Technique for single-crystal growth. It is believed, that through combining of two types of Bi 3+-substituted rare-earth iron garnets with opposite signs of Faraday rotation temperature and wavelength coefficients, the magneto-optical properties could be much improved. Series of AYbBiIG bulk single crystals with large magneto-optical figure of merit, low magnetic field for saturation, low near-infrared absorption, and small Faraday rotation temperature and wavelength coefficients were obtained, such as Ho 0.85 Yb 1.12Bi 1.03 Fe 5O 12 and Tb 2.06 Y 0.46Bi 0.48 Fe 5O 12, etc. Investigation of AYbBiIG used as Faraday rotator material for optical isolator indicates that our new designed and grown magnetooptical Faraday rotation crystals are good candidate for temperature stabilized and wideband optical isolators employing in WDM optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract:Polycrystalline Ce:YIG thin films deposited on silicon are promising material candidates for integrated nonreciprocal photonic devices. So far, the reported Faraday rotation of polycrystalline Ce:YIG thin films on silicon is much lower than that of their single crystal or epitaxial thin film counterparts, limiting the magneto-optical figure of merit, device bandwidth and fabrication tolerance. In this paper, we report the growth of Ce:YIG thin films on silicon from targets with high Ce concentration up to nominally Y1.5Ce1.5Fe5O12 by pulsed laser deposition. The polycrystalline Y1.5Ce1.5Fe5O12 thin film showed pure garnet phase, smooth surface roughness of 0.7 nm, a dominant Ce3+ valence state and a bulk-like saturation magnetization of 125 emu/cm3 at room temperature. This material shows high Faraday rotation of −6410 deg/cm at 1550 nm wavelength, exceeding that of an Y2Ce1Fe5O12 epitaxial thin film on a GGG (100) substrate. However higher loss and lower figure of merit is also observed at 1550 nm wavelength compared to Y2Ce1Fe5O12 thin films, possibly due to the low oxygen partial pressure during fabrication. Low deposition oxygen partial pressure is essential to enhance the Ce solubility and Ce3+ concentration, which results in large Faraday rotation.
Silicon integrated nonreciprocal photonic devices using monolithically integrated magnetic oxides

Abstract:In this work, we report our recent progress on monolithic integration of magneto-optical oxide thin films and nonreciprocal photonic devices on silicon. We demonstrate strong Faraday rotation of - 6000 deg/cm at 1550 nm wavelength in silicon integrated Ce 1.5 Y 1.5 Fe 5 O 12 films, which exceeds the Faraday rotation of epitaxial CeiY 2 Fe 5 Oi 2 thin films on garnet substrates. We also present the design of a broadband optical isolator using silicon/CeYIG/silicon MMI structure. The device shows 20 dB isolation bandwidth of 1.6 nm, and insertion of 0.817 dB at 1550 nm wavelength, with a very compact device footprint of 310.42 μm. The fabrication tolerance and influence of a YIG seed layer on the device performance are also discussed.

Abstract:Ce:YIG thin films are taken as an ideal candidate for magneto-optical devices with giant Faraday effect in the near-infrared range, but it is hindered by a limited Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio and a high saturation driving field. To address this issue, Eu doping can increase the Faraday rotation angle by similar to 40% to 1.315 x 104 deg/cm and decrease the saturation driving field by similar to 38% to 1.17 kOe in Eu0.75Ce1Y1.25Fe5O12 compared to Ce1Y2Fe5O12 pristine. The mechanism is attributed to the conversion of Ce4+ to Ce3+ and the weakening of ferrimagnetism by Eu doping. This work not only provides strategies for improving Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio in Ce:YIG, but also develops (Eu,Ce):YIG with a promising Faraday rotation angle for magneto-optical devices.

Abstract:In this study, we used combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method to deposit Ce:YIG thin films with high Ce concentration on silicon. Thin films with record high Ce concentrations of Ce 1.3 Y 1.7 Fe 5 O 12 were successfully grown on silicon, which showed about 3 fold enhancement of the Kerr rotation at 635 nm wavelength compared to previously reported Ce 1 Y 2 Fe 5 O 12 . Ce x Y 3-x Fe 5 O 12 films with Ce concentration varying from 0.8 to x 1.4 were deposited on polycrystalline YIG thin film (60 nm) buffered Si substrates by PLD.

Abstract:Cerium-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG) thin films are promising magneto-optical (MO) materials for the application in optical isolators. Ce:YIG can be grown on the YIG seed layer, and the change of layer thickness ratio for Ce:YIG to YIG may result in different magnetic properties. In this work, Ce:YIG (Ce1Y2Fe5O12) to YIG (Y3Fe5O12) bilayer films, with different thickness ratios of 2:1, 4:1, 6:1, and 8:1, were grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD); 2:1 and 4:1 films consist of pure YIG phase; 6:1 and 8:1 films consist of YIG phase, Y2Fe4O9 phase with hexagonal structure, and Y2O3 phase with cubic structure. Y2Fe4O9 and Y2O3 phases induce the decrease of saturation magnetization ( $M_{s}$ ). The concentration of Fe2+ and Ce4+ ions increases with layer thickness ratio increasing, resulting in the decrease of saturation magnetization ( $M_{s}$ ), coercivity ( $H_{c}$ ), and magnetic anisotropy energy ( $E$ ). It is found that the best magnetic properties, including $H_{c}$ (26.9 Oe), $M_{s}$ (140.6 emu/cm3), and $E$ (257.5 J/cm3), are obtained in the 2:1 film.

Abstract:The preparation and magneto-optic properties of YIG thin films were investigated. Ce-substituted yttriumiron garnet (Ce-1 YIG) thin films were grown on an amorphous silica substrate by RF magnetron sputtering method. Then the asgrown amorphous Ce-1 YIG thin films were annealing in different ambient gas to obtain the crystallized film with magneto-optic effect. The post annealing process was investigated in detail, and the influence of microstructure of films on magntooptic properties was discussed. The results show that the saturation Faraday rotation coefficient theta(F) of about 0.8deg/mum was obtained for light at a wavelength of 630 nm, and the strong in-plane magnetization was observed. The curie temperature is 220degreesC measured by VSM at atmosphere. All these parameters show that Ce: YIG thin film prepared is suitable for fabrication of magnetooptic waveguide isolator.

Abstract:We report the growth of Ce-substituted yttrium iron garnet (CeYIG) thin films deposited by pulsed laser deposition on quartz substrates. CeYIG exhibits a large Faraday rotation in the near-IR region. Upon investigating the phase composition and the magnetic and magneto-optical properties of the films, we present optimal process conditions for growing CeYIG thin films on quartz substrates. A saturation magnetization (Ms) as high as 159 emu/cm 3 was achieved by depositing a Ce 0.25 Y 1.75 Fe 5 O 12 thin film at a substrate temperature of 650 ∘ C and a 2-Hz laser pulse rate. Under the same depositing conditions, CeYIG thin films annealed at 800 ∘ C for 40 min provided the largest Faraday rotation (FR) angle of −6000 ∘ /cm by applying an out-of-plane magnetic field. Hence, CeYIG thin film materials show promise for magneto-optical and microwave communication applications.

Abstract:For the realization of integrated nonreciprocal photonic devices for optical communication, on-chip monolithic integration of magneto-optical materials onto silicon remains a challenge. Implemented with pulsed laser deposition (PLD), a MgO interfacial layer is introduced to overcome the material incompatibilities between a silicon substrate and magneto-optical thin films of yttrium iron garnet (YIG). With a thickness of similar to 40 nm, the amorphous interfacial layer of MgO can effectively inhibit interdiffusion across YIG/Si and promote the growth of a high-density, high-phase-purity polycrystalline garnet structure in the bilayer of YIG/Ce:YIG. Such modified chemistry and microstructure in YIG/Ce:YIG lead to enhanced magneto-optical properties, including an similar to 38% increase in Faraday rotation and an similar to 15% increase in saturation magnetization, as well as an similar to 20% increase in infrared (IR) transmission. Offering dual functions of diffusion barrier and structure template, the MgO layer demonstrated herein suggests a new remedy solution to heterogeneous interfaces in advanced thin film devices.

Abstract:Thin film magneto-optical (MO) materials are enablers for integrated nonreciprocal photonic devices such as isolators and circulators. Films of polycrystalline bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi:YIG) have been grown on silicon substrates and waveguide devices, in which an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) seedlayer is placed either above or below the active Bi:YIG layer to promote crystallization. The films exhibit a high MO figure of merit of up to 769 degrees dB(-1) at 1550 nm wavelength. Growth of single phase Bi:YIG on the sidewalls of waveguides is demonstrated, which can be used in nonreciprocal transverse electric (TE)-mode devices.
Bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet film/frystal composite for Faraday rotators

Abstract:The novel bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet films were grown by the modified liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) technique for use as a 45degrees faraday rotator in optical isolators. First, single crystals of Y3Fe5O12(YIG), with a lattice, constant of 1.2378 nm, were grown by means of the Czochralski method. Using YIG instead of the conventional nonmagnetic garnet of Gd3Ga5O12(GGG) as a substrate, a film of BiYbIG was grown by means of the LPE method from Bi2O3-B2O3 fluxes. The structural, magnetic and magneto-optical properties of BiYbIG LPE film/YIG crystal composite were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), vibrating sample magnetometry (VMS) and near-infrared transmission spectrometry. The saturation magnetization 47piM(s) was estimated to be about 1200 G. The Faraday rotation spectrum was measured by the method of rotating analyzer ellipsometry (RAE) with the wavelength varied from 800 to 1700 nm. The resultant Bi0.37Yb2.63Fe5O12 LPE film/YIG crystal composite shows an increased Faraday rotation coefficient due to doping W, ions on the dodecahedral sites of the magnetic garnet without increasing absorption loss, therefore a good magneto-optic figure of merit, defined by the ratio of Faraday rotation and optical absorption loss, can achieved of 21.5 and 30.2degrees/dB at 1300 and 1550 nm wavelengths respectively at room temperature. Since Yb3+ ions and Y3+ ions provide the opposite contributes to the wideband and temperature characteristics of Faraday rotation, the values of Faraday rotation wavelength and temperature coefficients are reduced to 0.06%/nm and 0.007 degrees(.) degreesC(-1) at 1550 nm wavelength respectively.

Abstract:Magneto-optical materials with high Verdet constants at high extinction ratios are desirable for the Faraday isolators. However, current terbium-based crystals have encountered several issues, such as low Verdet constants (TGG crystals), difficult growth (TSAG crystals), and low utilization of raw materials, which limit the development of the Faraday isolators. Here, R0.0025TSAG (R= Pr, Ho, Dy, Eu) transparent ceramics are prepared. The ceramics exhibit high optical transparency above 74.0% in the 525–1565 nm range and a high relative density of 98.9%. In particular, the transmittance of R0.0025TSAG ceramics at 1064 nm is approximately 81.6%, 81.6%, 79.8%, and 80.6%, respectively. The Verdet constants of R0.0025TSAG ceramics at the measurement wavelength are greater than those of the TSAG ceramic. The compelling magneto-optical performance of the Dy0.0025TSAG ceramic includes a high Verdet constant of 161.8 ± 3 rad·m−1·T−1 at 635 nm. The Verdet constant of the Dy0.0025TSAG ceramic is still superior to that of TSAG ceramic in the same temperature range. The extinction ratios of the R0.0025TSAG (R= Pr, Ho, Dy) ceramics exceed 40 dB. The figure of merit points out the superior characteristics of R0.0025TSAG ceramics. Moreover, R0.0025TSAG (R= Pr, Ho, Dy) ceramics with a thickness above the centimeter level are successfully prepared. This work indicates that the Dy0.0025TSAG ceramic can promote the miniaturization of magneto-optical isolators and can be applied in high-power lasers.

Abstract:Cerium doped rare-earth iron garnet (Ce: RIG) film is a promising candidate for magneto-optical devices in laser systems with giant Faraday effect; nevertheless, devices fail nonreciprocally with increasing temperature due to a negative Faraday rotation angle temperature coefficient. To mitigate this effect, the relationship between the magnetic moments of three distinct magnetic sublattices and the temperature coefficients of the Faraday rotation angle was investigated. Cerium doped holmium iron garnet (Ce: HoIG) film, where magnetic Ho3+ occupied the dodecahedrons, exhibited an enhanced Faraday rotation angle retention at a temperature of 400 K. However, the nonmagnetic ion doping in tetrahedral and octahedral sites yielded a negligible effect. The mechanism behind this occurrence is attributed to the magnetic compensation effect, which results in a small magnetic moment temperature coefficient within the range of 300 - 400 K. The study not only offers strategies for designing Ce: RIG components with reduced temperature coefficient, but also presents the development of a Ce: HoIG film exhibiting promising stability in Faraday rotation angle as a function of temperature.

Abstract:Films of polycrystalline terbium iron garnet (TbIG), cerium-substituted TbIG (CeTbIG), and bismuth-substituted TbIG (BiTbIG) are grown on Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The films grow under tensile strain due to thermal mismatch with the Si substrate, resulting in a dominant magnetoelastic anisotropy which, combined with shape anisotropy, leads to in-plane magnetization. TbIG has a compensation temperature of 253 K which is reduced by substitution of Ce and Bi. The Faraday rotation at 1550 nm of the TbIG, Ce0.36TbIG, and Bi0.03TbIG films is 5400 ± 600° cm−1, 4500 ± 100° cm–1, and 6200 ± 300° cm−1, respectively, while Ce0.36TbIG and Bi0.03TbIG exhibit lower optical absorption than TbIG, attributed to a reduction in Fe2+ and Tb4+ absorption pathways. The high Faraday rotation of the films, and in particular the high magneto-optical figure of merit of the Bi0.03TbIG of 720° dB−1 at 1550 nm, make these polycrystalline films valuable for applications in integrated photonics.

Abstract:Cerium substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG) epitaxial thin films are prepared on gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate with pulsed laser deposition (PLD). It is observed that the films grown on GGG(111) substrate exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) as compared to films grown on GGG(100) substrate. The developed PMA is confirmed from magneto-optical Kerr effect, bulk magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. Further, the magnetic bubble domains are observed in the films exhibiting PMA. The observations are explained in terms of the growth direction of Ce:YIG films and the interplay of various magnetic anisotropy terms. The observed PMA is found to be tunable with thickness of the film and a remarkable temperature stability of the PMA is observed in all the studied films of Ce:YIG deposited on GGG(111) substrate.

Abstract:We report two novel strategies to integrate magneto-optical oxides on oxidized silicon and SOI platforms based on strip-loaded waveguide structures. By using conventional waveguide fabrication and thin film deposition techniques, strip-loaded waveguides for magneto-optical non-reciprocal phase shift (NRPS) applications can be integrated on a silicon platform. As a demonstration, two structures, ie As 2 S 3/Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG) and YIG/SOI waveguides are fabricated. Using pulsed-laser deposition followed by rapid thermal annealing, yttrium iron oxide films in which more than 95 vol.% had crystallized into the YIG phase were achieved on both substrates. The optical loss of the As 2 S 3/Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 waveguide was characterized by a cut-back method to be∼ 10 dB/cm at 1550 nm, while the optical loss of a 450nm wide YIG/SOI waveguide was determined to be 41 dB/cm at 1550 nm by measuring the quality factor Q of a pulley-type ring resonator consisting of such waveguides. The propagation loss of polycrystalline YIG on a SiO 2/Si substrate was around 50 dB/cm at 1550 nm wavelength. The NRPS and figure of merit of both waveguides were simulated. It is suggested that a Bi: YIG or Ce: YIG layer may be integrated in these waveguide structures to achieve a higher NRPS and figure of merit for optical isolator applications. These waveguide fabrication techniques offer a compact, low cost and etch-free route for integrating magneto-optical materials on a silicon platform, which may be useful for making future integrated optical isolators and other magneto-optical components.
