Abstract:Several Ni supported solid catalysts containing different contents of Ni-Co-Cu were prepared by the method of impregnation of metal ammonium complex on the HZSM-5 support, and the activities of those catalysts prepared were evaluated by the hydrogenation reaction of IPN (Isophthalonitrile) to produce MXDA (meta-xylenediamine) in a high pressure reactor. The experimental evaluation results show that the yield of MXDA can reach 95% with the optimal conditions of the catalyst consisted of 30.4%Ni, 6.1%Co, 5.2%Cu and under the operation temperature 110℃, pressure 3 MPa, reaction time 2 h. The XRD analysis results show that the Ni loaded on the support by the method of impregnation of Ni ammonium complex exists in the form of Ni3(NO3)2(OH)4. The synergism effect between Ni-Co-Cu three metals was investigated, and it is found that adding Co can change the crystal form of the active metal loaded on the support and increase the selectivity of the catalyst, while adding Cu can reduce the crystal size of the active metal loaded on the support and hence increase the catalytic activity of the catalyst. Finally, the results of MS show that the byproducts of the side reaction during hydrogenation of IPN are formed by the deaminating condensation among MXDA molecules.

Abstract:The NiMoP/γ-Al2 O3 catalyst was prepared through a multi-step impregnation method and characterized by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry ( ICP-MS ) , N2 adsorption-desorption, transmission electron microscope ( TEM ) and H2 temperature programmed reduction ( H2-TPR ) . The catalyst with 4% Ni is determined to be the best one with optimum component proportion by the tests with model compounds in a fixed-bed reactor. The coal tar hydrogenation was conducted over the optimum catalyst. The results reveal that the removal of carbolic oil can promote the removal of S and N and the saturation of aromatics.

Abstract:Ni-Fe/γ-Al2 O3 catalysts with four different γ-Al2 O3 supports were prepared by incipient impregnation and characterized by XRD,BET and H2-TPR.Catalytic behaviors of the catalysts for low-temperature CO methanation were investigated in a slurry reactor.The results showed that the surface texture properties of γ-Al2 O3 supports had great impact on distribution of Ni reactive species and methanation activity.Moderate specific surface area(192m2/g) and pore size(5.8 nm) of γ-Al2 O3 was favor for the dispersion of active component,resulting in a higher amount of β-NiO and smaller Ni crystal particle size,which increased active sites,thus having better methanation activity and stability,with a CO conversion of 97.0% and a CH4 selectivity of 89.0%.However,the catalyst prepared by high silica γ-Al2 O3 support with larger specific surface area contained a great amount of α-NiO,which was inclined to agglomerate in the reduction process,resulting in low catalytic activity and stability,with a CO initial conversion of 85.5% and rapid deactivation after 17 hours.

Abstract:Efficient and clean utilization of coal tar is one of the key technologies for efficient and clean utilization of coal. Molybdenum disulfide has been favored for its superior catalytic hydrogenation of poor-quality oil. Molybdenum disulfide catalysts doped with different contents of nickel were synthesized by a two-step method. By SEM, XRD, Raman analyses, and other analyses. non-loaded NiMoSx-0.1 catalysts with larger lateral dimensions, fewer layers, and the appearance of specific active sites at both Basal and Edge positions were synthesized when Ni/Mo = 0.1 compared to undoped molybdenum disulfide. When Ni/Mo is continuously increased, the conversion of the intermediate MoS4-xOx is severely affected, which decreases the amount of MoS2 generated and increases the number of MoS2 layers and transverse dimensions. NiMoSx-0.1 promotes the conversion of CA to CN and enhances the hydrogenation and cracking of coal tar. The total gasoline and diesel content of the hydrotreating product was increased by 13.6 % with no coke production, in addition to the viscosity, density, and average molecular mass decreasing by 90 %, 5 %, and 33 %, respectively.

Abstract:The Mo-Ni/Al_2O_3 catalyst made by impregnating at normal temperature was modified by hydrothermal technology, and the result was estimated through the model reaction of pyridine hydrodenitrogenation. The result indicates that hydrothermal modification may load more Mo and Ni, increase the specific surface area and improve the distributing of pores, therefore higher HDN activity was gotten.

Abstract:NiMo-doped catalysts were investigated for the conversion of lignin to drop-in fuel through catalytic hydro pyrolysis. The influence of NiMo-doped catalysts with different carriers and Ni/Mo molar ratios on the hydro pyrolysis product distribution were studied using both lignin and lignin model compounds. Two coefficients were proposed to qualitatively evaluate the catalytic performance of NiMo-doped catalysts. Low yield of methane (13.04c%) and high yield of condensable hydrocarbons products (25.82c%) with low selectivity of polyaromatics (4.37%) were obtained at 1.0 MPa H-2 and 400 degrees C catalytic temperature during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis over Ni1Mo/ZrO2. The hydrodeoxygenation activity of NixMo/ZrO2 depends on Ni-0, Mo4+, and Mo3+. The synergistic effect of Ni and Mo promotes the removal of the phenolic methoxy group. The increase in hydrogen pressure tends to make hydrogen to be consumed through hydrocracking and hydrogenation reactions. The influence of Ni1Mo/ZrO2 on evolution of lignin hydropyrolysis volatiles was revealed. Ni shows strong activity in the removal of phenolic hydroxyl groups and benzene ring hydrogenation, while Mo tends to remove phenolic methoxy groups.
Impacts of Nickel Loading on Properties, Catalytic Behaviors of Ni/γ–Al2O3 Catalysts and the Reaction Intermediates Formed in Methanation of CO2

Abstract:In this study, methanation of CO2 over Ni/Al2O3 with varied nickel loading (from 0 to 50 wt %) was evaluated, striving to explore the effects of nickel loading on catalytic behaviors and the reaction intermediates formed. The results showed that agglomeration of nickel particles were closely related to interaction between nickel and alumina. Increasing nickel loading resulted in the increased proportion of nickel having medium strong interaction with alumina, the reduced reduction degree of NiO, the increase of medium to strong basic sites, the enhanced activity for methanation and the competition between reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction and methanation. Lower nickel loading promoted RWGS reaction while methanation of CO2 dominated at higher nickel loading. The catalyst with a nickel loading around 25% achieved the best activity for methanation. The in-situ DRIFTS studies of methanation of CO2 showed that CO2 could be absorbed on surface of metallic Ni, NiO or alumina. More metallic nickel species on alumina suppressed formation of carbonate species while promoted further conversion of HCOO* species and *CH3 species, achieving a higher catalytic efficiency. Moreover, more metallic nickel species was crucial for gasifying the carbonaceous intermediates, prevented aggregation of the intermediates to coke and achieving a higher catalytic stability. A Ni catalyst supported on commercial TiO2 was also prepared through post precipitation and studied to compare the influence of Ni precipitation conditions on the catalyst’s performance. To gain insight on their structure and physicochemical properties, the catalysts were characterized with N2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction, transimission electron microscopy, H2 temperature programmed reduction and temperature programmed desorption. The results showed that the in situ precipitation method was beneficial to the dispersion of Ni and the formation of more active sites on the Ni/TiO2 catalyst. In addition, the density of the metal- support boundary and its interaction with the active component were also increased. These characteristics of Ni/TiO2(TBT) led to a lower light-off temperature and a suppression of Ni sintering during CO methanation. As a consequence, the Ni/TiO2(TBT) exhibited better catalytic behavior, with a CO conversion of 99.4% and CH4 selectiv-ity of 90.4% under the following conditions: p=1 MPa, t=320 °C, n(H2)/n(CO)=3, gas hour space velocity (GHSV)=2×104 mL·g–1·h–1. The life test results of the two catalysts showed that Ni/TiO2(TBT) was more stable and the catalytic activity remained at its initial level after being used for 30 h.

Abstract:Eight characteristic model compounds were employed as hydrotreatment feedstocks to simulate low temperature coal tar oil. A series of NiW/Al2O3 catalysts with different Ni/W ratio and NiWP/Al2O3 catalysts with different phosphorus content were prepared by incipient wetness co-impregnation. Both catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction, HRTEM, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD and FT-IR. The heteroatom removal and polyaromatic hydrogenation conversions were more than 90% over these catalysts. Ni6W20 showed the highest conversion among the NiW/Al2O3 catalysts due to the presence of relatively short, thick slabs when compared to the other Ni/W ratios. Phosphorus was added to adjust the acid concentration of NiW sulfides. The best hydrotreatment performance was seen with the 0.8 wt% phosphorus catalyst, which was attributed to the highest medium strength acid concentration. The results suggested the medium acid on the NiW sulfide was probably the active site for the hydrogenation of the aromatic ring in the coal tar oil hydrotreatment process. The self-prepared catalyst showed higher HDS and HDN activity than a commercial catalyst.

Abstract:The combustible gas produced by coal pyrolysis can be used as a clean fuel to reduce environmental pollution caused by coal combustion. In order to improve the efficiency of coal pyrolysis to prepare flammable gases, Ni-Co supported pyrolysis catalysts were prepared by equal volume impregnation method using the pyrolysis coke of different pyrolysis final temperatures as the carrier in this study. The effects of different pyrolysis final temperatures and different metal loadings on pyrolysis products were studied. The cracking mechanism of the catalysts was characterized by BET, XRD, XPS and SEM. The results show that: (1) the catalytic efficiency of pyrolysis coke catalyst is mainly related to the metal type and loading of the additive. (2) The optimum preparation conditions for the supported catalyst are: use pyrolysis coke with 750 °C final pyrolysis temperature as the carrier, the loading amount of Ni is 5%, and the loading amount of Co is 8%.

Abstract:Effect of Ni loading amount and reaction temperature on catalytic cracking of tar was investigated over a nickel base catalyst of palygorskite clay(Ni/PG) that was prepared by the wetness method.The morphology,phase and carbon deposition of catalysts were characterized by transmission electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction and total carbon analysis,respectively.The results show that the tar removal and hydrogen yield can be improved at a great Ni loading amount.In addition,the tar removal and hydrogen yield could be enhanced at a high reaction temperature,and the Ni loading over the Ni/PG catalyst exhibits a superior capacity of resistance to the carbon deposition.
Nickel Loaded on Carbon Materials Prepared From Co-pyrolysis of Biochar and Caking Coal for Catalytic Conversion of Volatiles

Abstract:The carbon material prepared by co-pyrolysis of biochar and caking coal has been proved that it acts in catalytic conversion of volatiles and could be used in a granular bed duster as filter medium due to its high abrasive resistance in the coal pyrolysis technology. In this work, inactive carbon material loaded by nickel (Ni/ICM) was prepared by pyrolysis of the blend of biochar ion exchanged with nickel and caking coal, and then was steam activated obtaining activated carbon material loaded by nickel (Ni/ACM). The study investigated the in-situ catalytic conversion process of coal pyrolysis volatiles over Ni/ICM and Ni/ACM in a continuous pyrolysis downer-bed reactor. The physical and chemical properties of Ni/ICM and Ni/ACM, pyrolysis product distribution and the component of tar were analyzed, especially, the coke suspended in tar (Coke-S) was separated from tar and characterized in detail. Results show that the crystallite size of Ni and NiO in Ni/ICM is about 5-7 nm, and that is slightly larger in Ni/ACM. Compared to Ni/ICM, more nickel species, pores, acid sites, oxygen-containing functional groups and carbon defects are contained in Ni/ACM. The yields of tar and light tar (boiling point below 360 o C) are higher over Ni/ICM than over Ni/ACM. Ni/ICM further improves the tar quality compared to ICM, and the content of light oil in tar increases from 22.0 wt.% over ICM to 30.6 wt.% over Ni 3.2 /ICM. The highest light oil yield is obtained over Ni 1.9 /ICM as 3.6 wt.% and the lowest pitch yield is obtained over Ni 3.2 /ICM as 3.5 wt.%. The characterization of Coke-S shows that it is composed of large aromatic clusters crosslinked by oxygen and fine ash particles. The large aromatic clusters, as heavy component in tar, are found that its H/C molar ratio increases and condensation degree decreases over Ni/ICM and Ni/ACM in comparison with ICM and ACM, respectively, which also means that the quality of tar is improved. Besides, the oxygen in the tar may have been transferred to the coke.

Abstract:To obtain type II active phase with higher activity, MoS2-based catalysts were prepared by thermal decomposition of ammonium tetrathiomolybdate. The influence of Ni adding way and decomposition atmosphere on the microstructures of MoS2 slabs, chemical state of surface elements, as well as hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation activities were investigated. Results indicated that simultaneous impregnation of Mo and Ni precursors caused in situ deposition of amorphous NiMoS4 over the support surface, which subsequently facilitated the substitution of Mo atoms by Ni atoms at MoS2 edges. Accordingly, these decorated catalysts exhibited higher dispersion of MoS2 slabs with more suitable slab length (3–5 nm) and stacking number (2–4), which attributed to larger numbers of rim and corner active sites exposed at the edges. These active sites were essential in hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions. In comparison with N2 atmosphere, thermal decomposition in H2 atmosphere was more conducive to the substitution of Mo atoms by Ni atoms at MoS2 edges, which provided more active Ni-Mo-S structures for the adsorption, activation and hydrogenolysis of quinoline and dibenzothiophene molecules. The catalyst prepared by thermal decomposition of NiMoS4 in H2 atmosphere showed superior activities in the quinoline hydrodenitrogenation with 23.8% conversion and in the dibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization with 93.3% conversion, under the conditions of 340°C, 3 MPa, a weight hourly space velocity of 23.4 h−1, H2/oil volume ratio of 600 and 0.1 g of NMS-H2 catalysts.

Abstract:A series of NiMo/gamma-Al2O3 hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts with different metal-support interactions were first prepared by a conventional impregnation method through changing the calcination temperature. The physicochemical properties of nickel species and molybdenum species in the oxidic and sulfidic catalysts were characterized by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, H-2 temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. It was found both the interaction between nickel and gamma-alumina (Ni-Al2O3 interaction) and the interaction between molybdenum and gamma-alumina (Mo-Al2O3 interaction) gradually increase with increasing calcination temperature. However, the calcination temperature has a weak influence in the sulfidation degree of molybdenum species but a huge effect on the decoration degree of Ni species on edges of MoS2 nanoslabs. The decoration degree of Ni species visibly declines with increasing calcination temperature, but the sulfidation degree of molybdenum stays nearly parallel at the same time, indicating that Ni rather than Mo is more sensitive to the calcination temperature. In addition, the MoS2 morphology could be impacted by the availability of surface nickel atoms. These results suggest that the Ni-Al2O3 interaction imposes a more dominant influence on the HDS catalysts. Then the HDS performance was evaluated using dibenzothiophene as the model reactant, and through correlating the catalyst structures with the activity, an original suggestion about the effects of the Ni-Al2O3 interaction on HDS performance was given: the Ni-Al2O3 interaction not only enhances the availability of surface nickel atoms to form more NiMo-S active sites, but also improves the microstructures of MoS2, i.e., shorter nanoslabs and higher stacking layers, which together enhance the apparent activity and intrinsic activity of Ni-Mo catalysts. The present work reveals that finely adjusting Ni-Al2O3 interaction is an effective strategy for improving the performance of hydrodesulfurization catalysts. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. Synthesis of mesoporous TiO2-Al2O3 composites supported NiW hydrotreating catalysts and their superior catalytic performance for heavy oil hydrodenitrogenation

Abstract:Mesoporous TiO2-Al2O3 composites with different Ti/Al molar ratios were successfully synthesized via pre-hydrolysis co-precipitation method and the corresponding NiW supported hydrotreating (HDT) catalysts were prepared via incipient wetness co-impregnation method. The effects of Ti modification on the physicochemical properties of the prepared supports and catalysts were determined by the characterization techniques such as XRD, FTIR, N2 physical adsorption–desorption, SEM-EDS, ICP-OES, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, HRTEM and XPS. Finally, quinoline, indole and coker gas oil (CGO) were used respectively as probes to investigate the Ti modification on the hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) performances of the corresponding catalysts. The results show that the TiO2-Al2O3 samples synthesized by the pre-hydrolysis co-precipitation method achieved the level of molecular composition, and the crystalline structures, pore properties and acidity properties of the TiO2-Al2O3 supports varied with the Ti/Al molar ratios. Ti modification can modulate the interaction between the active metals and the supports (MSI), and promote the formation of more so-called “type II” NiWS active phases. Furthermore, the existence of Ti3+ species in catalysts NiW/TA1 and NiW/TA2 enhanced the sulfidation degrees of active metals and weakened the bond energy between the active metals and sulfur atoms and further promoted the formation of more coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS). The catalytic assessment results show that the HDN activities of the catalysts were effectively improved after Ti modification and the improvement was largely due to the promotion of the cleavage of the C(sp3)-N bond of basic nitrides and the C(sp2)-N bond of non-basic nitrides. The NiW/TA1 catalyst exhibited the highest performance in the HDT process of heavy oil, with a 15.8% and 12.4% improvement in HDN rate and hydrodesulfurization (HDS) rate compared with the unmodified catalyst, respectively, which was mainly attributed to its suitable pore properties, moderate MSI, large number of CUS, moderate stacking and highest active metal sulfidation degree of the active phase.

Abstract:To improve the yield and quality of coal pyrolysis tar while using pyrolysis gas (PG), a Ni/MgO catalyst was introduced to catalyze the pyrolysis of bituminous coal under a PG atmosphere. The effects of pyrolysis temperature, gas flow rate, catalyst packing methods, and atmosphere composition on coal pyrolysis were investigated. The yield and quality of tar obtained from Shihezi (SHZ) bituminous coal pyrolysis under N-2, PG, and PG over a Ni/MgO catalyst were found to vary with the increase of pyrolysis temperature. The catalyst packed in the upper layer results in higher tar yields, but mixing the catalyst and coal leads to an increase in the maltene yield. The components in PG improved the tar yield and tar quality. Finally, a higher tar yield can be obtained from SHZ coal pyrolysis under CO/H-2, CO2/H-2, and CO2/CH4 atmospheres using a Ni/MgO catalyst.
