Abstract:In view of the problems of large memory footprint and low lookup efficiency existing in the present software implementation of the EPA (Ethernet for plant automation) communication schedule algorithm, the paper proposes a hardware implementation method based on the field programmable gate array (FPGA). This method adopts a strategy of storing messages intensively and constructing communication schedule lists separately, and based on this, devises a parallel processing scheme for lookup of the communication schedule lists. The results of the test on a platform with a Altera Cyclone II FPGA as the main controller show that compared with the software implementation, this implementation method decreases the consumption of memory resources, enhances the message lookup efficiency by 9 times, and doubles the performance of communication.

Abstract:In system-level synthesis, the allocation of resources is always decided by the designer or explored in the outer-most loop. In this paper, a heuristic scheduling algorithm is proposed to find the resource allocation during its running process. It determines the appropriate number of required resource instances based on the system partition in scheduling, and generates the corresponding resource allocation, scheduling and assignment solution. Such an algorithm can simplify the system-level design exploration to a procedure of system partitioning, scheduling and evaluation, and can improve the exploration efficiency. Experimental results show the feasibility and validity of the approach.

Abstract:As the electronic systems got more and more complicated,automatic design methods are needed to find the best solution.A design exploration algorithm based on branch-and-bound and list scheduling is proposed.The algorithm has architecture of three stages.At the first and second stage the module selection and sharing schemes are explored by the branch-and-bound method,while the list scheduling method is used to schedule the tasks in the third stage.Multiple module choices for the tasks are considered,and all the module sharing possibilities are fully explored.Several tests have been made for various task graphs of different scales.The performance of this algorithm is compared with those existing methods.The results indicate that for systems of small or medium scale with the list scheduling strategy the proposed algorithm can find the best solution in a short time.

Abstract:As an essential step in High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools, scheduling algorithm has displayed a decisive character in the process that transforms a behavioral specification into a register transfer level (RTL) circuit. Scheduling algorithm based on system of difference constraints (SDC) transforms scheduling problem into a special linear-programming mathematic problem by bringing in the conception of scheduling variables and transforming the scheduling constraints into mathematic constraints of integer difference form. In this paper, the method of applying min-cost network flow into scheduling algorithm is proposed. Through experiment, scheduling algorithm applied min-cost network flow has more advantages in time complexity than scheduling based on traditional linear-programming mathematic algorithm. The conclusion of the experiment is that the application of min-cost network flow algorithm in HLS scheduling algorithm is feasible.

Abstract:Considering that the comparisons of the basic algorithms of the multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) are still not perfect, the paper proposes the three dimension (3D) algorithms comparative method which considers accuracy, optimized efficiency and executive time, and the algorithms comparative 3D model which gives a reliable academic support to engineering, and for the first time, takes accuracy as an important index for algorithms comparing. On the basis of academic study, the paper compares numerical algorithms with combined algorithms and gets the result that the accuracy of numerical algorithms is much higher than that of combination ones when time change is not great, so that it provides more credibility to engineering applications. According to the results of comparisons, the sequence of algorithmic choice is provided for numerical algorithms and combined ones. Finally, it is validated that the 3D algorithms comparative method is reasonable and feasible through the analysis of the case of cell phone, which needs the choice of numerical algorithms.

Abstract:Traditional IC design methodology based on standard cells shows its limitation on design efficiency, which can not satisfy the needs for shorter time-to-market and more advanced functionality of IC products. To solve this problem, a novel high level synthesis method named operator design method is proposed. In this paper, a scheduling scheme to timing optimization for operator design method is proposed, which is carried out based on the attributes of the operand in the operation and dependence of the operations. The experiment results proves the feasibility and the efficiency of the operator design method, and obtains a 65% faster data-processing capacity and 30% reduction in hardware cost than that of SPARK tool of University California at San Diego. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper summarized characteristics of several intelligent algorithms concerned with multidisciplinary design optimization,and on the basis,put forward several criteria such as time,precision,numbers of problems settled.It was the first time to use the precision as criterion of comparison.This paper originally introduced short-time optimizing capacity to aim at engineering problems.It received a series of instructional conclusions by running the cases selected.The cell phone example validates correctness of these conclusions.

Abstract:Exact algorithms for large-scale resource constrained project schedules require excessive computing times while the solution quality of heuristics algorithms are not good enough.A project decomposition method with intelligent optimization was developed by combining serial and parallel decomposition methods.The optimization algorithm was the project coordination method based on sampling selection with sub-projects optimized by a bound algorithm.The effect of key parameters on the solution quality and time were analyzed for various simulated scenarios.The simulations show that the algorithm provides a better average quality of solutions than other heuristic algorithms.

Abstract:In the design of SoC systems,the design scheme the performance and cost of the ultimate system directly determines.A design exploration algorithm is proposed by intertwining the module selection,the resource sharing and the task scheduling.The algorithm integrates these three problems into a branch-and-bound procedure,and searches for the best solution under the list scheduling strategy.The searching is performed concurrently with the scheduling,which leads to a fast search speed.Several tests are taken for various task graphs of different scales.The performance of this algorithm is compared with those existing methods.The experimental results indicate that,for systems with small or medium scale,the algorithm can find the best solution in the design space in a short time.

Abstract:To guarantee the reliability of Numerical Control(NC) system,a model for hybrid dependent task set was established and the heuristic Best-First(BF) algorithm was introduced to realize optimized scheduling of this model.Then,a fault-tolerant scheduling strategy based on rollback recovery and BF algorithm was proposed to remove transient fault of system.Compared with traditional fault tolerate scheduling algorithm,the proposed strategy could be applied to scheduling in mixed and dependent tasks of NC system,and raise the level of resources utilization by reducing the cost of fault disposal.Validity of proposed approach applied to NC system was verified by case study and algorithm simulation.

Abstract:Implementation synthesis of embedded software has great influence on implementing embedded software's non-functional requirements, such as real-time, memory consumption, and low power, etc. In this paper, we focus on the implementation synthesis problem under a class of operating systems that supports the hybrid-scheduling model, that is, task sets have preemptable tasks and non-preemptable tasks. We propose a time analysis technology and an implementation synthesis method with the ability of design space exploration and optimization. Experimental evaluation shows our implementation synthesis method yields real-time embedded software with lower system overheads.
[Comparison of Two Algorithms for Development of Design Space-Overlapping Method and Probability-Based Method].

Abstract:In this work, two algorithms (overlapping method and the probability-based method) for design space calculation were compared by using the data collected from extraction process of Codonopsis Radix as an example. In the probability-based method, experimental error was simulated to calculate the probability of reaching the standard. The effects of several parameters on the calculated design space were studied, including simulation number, step length, and the acceptable probability threshold. For the extraction process of Codonopsis Radix, 10 000 times of simulation and 0.02 for the calculation step length can lead to a satisfactory design space. In general, the overlapping method is easy to understand, and can be realized by several kinds of commercial software without coding programs, but the reliability of the process evaluation indexes when operating in the design space is not indicated. Probability-based method is complex in calculation, but can provide the reliability to ensure that the process indexes can reach the standard within the acceptable probability threshold. In addition, there is no probability mutation in the edge of design space by probability-based method. Therefore, probability-based method is recommended for design space calculation.
Understanding the Architectural Characteristics of EDA Algorithms

Abstract:Currently, the release of different chip products has come to a burst. Time-to-market period of these products has been shortened to an extreme, nearly 8 to 12 months. To reduce production period, hardware architects try to shorten every design and manufacture stage. Therefore, it has become one of the major concerns for them that how to accelerate electronic design automation (EDA) tools, which have been widely used throughout the lifetime of chip design and manufacture. While many prior efforts have done in-depth works on different acceleration techniques, such as IC-based, FPGA-based, or GPU-based, to our best knowledge, there has been no systematic study towards the architectural characteristics analysis for these EDA algorithms. This may impede the further optimizations and acceleration for them.In this paper, we make the first attempt to construct an EDA benchmark suite (EDAbench for short) for architectural design, parallel acceleration, and system optimization. EDAbench covers representative modern EDA algorithms. We then evaluate predominant architectural characteristics from three aspects including computation characteristics, memory hierarchy, and systematic characteristics. Experimental results reveal that there are some vital gaps between existing hardware and the requirements of EDA algorithms. Based on the analysis, we also give out some insights and propose suggestions for future optimization, acceleration, and architecture design.

Abstract:A large semiconductor product company spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year on design infrastructure to meet tapeout schedules for multiple concurrent projects. Resources (servers, electronic design automation tool licenses, engineers, and so on) are limited and must be shared -- and the cost per day of schedule slip can be enormous. Co-constraints between resource types (e.g., one license per every two cores (threads)) and dedicated versus shareable resource pools make scheduling and allocation hard. In this article, we formulate two mixed integer-linear programs for optimal multi-project, multi-resource allocation with task precedence and resource co-constraints. Application to a real-world three-project scheduling problem extracted from a leading-edge design center of anonymized Company X shows substantial compute and license costs savings. Compared to the product company, our solution shows that the makespan of schedule of all projects can be reduced by seven days, which not only saves ∼ 2.7% of annual labor and infrastructure costs but also enhances market competitiveness. We also demonstrate the capability of scheduling over two dozen chip development projects at the design center level, subject to resource and datacenter capacity limits as well as per-project penalty functions for schedule slips. The design center ended up purchasing 600 additional servers, whereas our solution demonstrates that the schedule can be met without having to purchase any additional servers. Application to a four-project scheduling problem extracted from a leading-edge design center in a non-US location shows availability of up to ∼ 37% headcount reduction during a half-year schedule for just one type of chip design activity.

Abstract:Against the background of smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0, how to achieve real-time scheduling has become a problem to be solved. In this regard, automatic design for shop scheduling based on hyper-heuristics has been widely studied, and a number of reviews and scheduling algorithms have been presented. Few studies, however, have specifically discussed the technical points involved in algorithm development. This study, therefore, constructs a general framework for automatic design for shop scheduling strategies based on hyper-heuristics, and various state-of-the-art technical points in the development process are summarized. First, we summarize the existing types of shop scheduling strategies and classify them using a new classification method. Second, we summarize an automatic design algorithm for shop scheduling. Then, we investigate surrogate-assisted methods that are popular in the current algorithm field. Finally, current problems and challenges are discussed, and potential directions for future research are proposed.

Abstract:This paper presents an optimization scheduling approach for concurrent design projects, in which activities may be executed in more than one operating mode and renewable as well as nonrenewable resources exist. Research on the development of a scheduling approach for concurrent scheduling is expected to shorten development lead time, minimize cost, and eliminate unnecessary redesign periods. In this paper, an integrated criterion function is proposed to ensure optimal concurrent scheduling and effective utilization of resources along with fluent delivery of information. In the criterion function, some key factors such as time order, resources, lead time and overlapping time of activities, which can make concurrent activities execute successfully, are taken into account adequately. Besides, two cruxes in concurrent engineering-role allocation, prerelease, and feedback revision process are discussed in detail. The example is part of a certain product development process, and the scheduling results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is feasible

Abstract:We provide an automatic verification and optimization tool to compare circuit with design specification in mixed signal design.The proposed tool can automatically compare the behavior model of design specification with circuit level design for both function and performance.If performance is mismatched,circuit sizing optimization is performed to make sure design meet both functional and performance specification.Waveform comparison is used for the functional check.Differential evolution(DE)is used for performance matching and circuit optimization.The optimization feature can also save the design efforts and achieve smaller area and power compare to manually circuit sizing.

Design Automation for Embedded Systems

Abstract:Hardware/software (HW/SW) partitioning and scheduling are the crucial steps during HW/SW co-design. It has been shown that they are classical combinatorial optimization problems. Due to the possible sequential or concurrent execution of the tasks, HW/SW partitioning and scheduling has become more difficult to solve optimally. In this paper more efficient heuristic algorithms are proposed for the HW/SW partitioning and scheduling. The proposed algorithm partitions a task graph by iteratively moving the task with highest benefit-to-area ratio in higher priority. The benefit-to-area ratio is updated in each iteration step to cater for the task concurrence. The proposed algorithm for task scheduling executes the task lying in hardware-only critical path in higher priority to enhance the task forecast. A large body of experimental results conclusively shows that the proposed heuristic algorithm for partitioning is superior to the latest efficient combinatorial algorithm (Tabu search) cited in this paper. Moreover, the Tabu search for partitioning has been further improved by utilizing the proposed heuristic solution as its initial solution. In addition, the proposed scheduling algorithm obtains the improvements over the most widely used approaches by up to 10% without large increase in running time.

A new methodology of integrating high level synthesis and floorplan for soc design

Abstract:As silicon CMOS technology is scaled into the nanometer regime, a whole system can be integrated into one chip. At the same time, the computer-aided design technology is challenged by two major features: the ever-increasing design complexity of gigascale integration and complicated physical effects inherent from the nanoscale technology. In this paper, a new methodology of integrating High Level Synthesis and Floorplan together is presented. The whole design flow is divided into two phases: a fast searching space scan procedure and a detailed solution optimize procedure. The searching space of integrating HLS and Floorplan is first “smoothed” by a “Behavior Information based Cluster Algorithm”, and then a fast scan of this smoothed searching space is proceeded. The result of the first phrase will be used as the start point of the detailed optimize procedure. The experimental result show that the methodology is efficient.

This paper designs the construction project schedule optimization system based on a hybrid genetic algorithm analyzes the requirements of the design project management system with modern system management means, constructs the system B / S structure, improves the system design function, and ensures that the construction project management system can be optimized. The design of a construction project management system can be applied in practice to realize the scientific management of engineering construction, which can not only improve the efficiency of engineering construction, but also greatly reduce the cost of project management, improve the level of engineering construction project management, and play an important role.
