Scholar Crisis and Reinvention of Scholarship in China:The Reality of China's Scholarship and its Transendence

Abstract:Scholars play an important role in social governance ,but the current scholar crisis in China has seriously impeded this scholarly role . Using a social structure theory and ?the Five Classes of Peoples"Theory ,the authors discussed the six expected social roles of the scholars and described the six manifestations of the failure of such expected roles . The authors have also pointed out the reasons behind the scholarly crisis in China . They include (1) the authoritarian tradition and politicized culture;(2) a confused scholar identity ;(3) the lack of consensual social values ;(4) lack of independence of scholarship ;(5) the departure of research from social reality ;(6) the misguided academic evaluation system (with emphasis on quantity rather than quality ,on publication rather than contribution) ;(7) the imbalance of academic disciplines ;(8) the lack of effective constraints on institutional errors ;(9) the decline of sense of scholarship . At the end of the paper ,the authors call for an effort to reinvent scholarship in China and put forward concrete suggestions to make such an effort to work .
