Abstract:In modern times,while Western learnings were introduced into China,Confucian classics became historiography.The East Zhejiang scholarship integrated the classics with the institution,which made it an important site for modern scholars to communicate between the old（China） and the new（West）,and build the new academic system.Liu Xianxin regarded the East Zhejiang scholarship his principal learning.He compiled The Collection of Roots（Xianhe Lu） many times,and constructed an academic genealogy of the East Zhejiang scholarship which perceived the Wuzhou historiography as the surface and Yaojiang Neo-Confucianism as the core.Moreover,Liu Xianxin explored the academic origin of literary and historical collation of the East Zhejiang School in the way of "knowing the categories and understanding the general system",and tried to integrate the study of life with the study of classics and history,in order to achieve the modern transformation of Chinese scholarship.The paper probes the sources and purposes of the original meaning and theme of Xianhe Lu,and hopes to show that the modern East Zhejiang School had been constantly shaped in the historical context and academic network.In addition,the paper also tends to provide some thoughts on how to clarify the changes of modern scholarship and analyze the transformation of Chinese civilization.

Abstract:Connected to the modern knowledge formation and institutional changes in the late Qing period, the revival of the Guwen Classics and the subsequent disputes between Guwen Classics and Jinwen Classics have always been academic focuses. Since the late Qing dynasty, ”Shu Learning” as an important school of Jinwen Classics, has become a center of the Chinese traditional learning. ”Sichuan Academy of Traditional Chinese Learning”, established at the beginning of the Republic of China and gathering together many scholars, witnessed the disputes between Liao Ping and Liu Shipei, the cultural phenomenon in modern Chinese academic field. We believe that the examination and review of the event is helpful to depict the tendency of Shu Learning and the change of Liu Shipei's research, to outline the transformation of the Jinwen-Guwen Classics at the beginning of the Republic of China.

Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:In the Qing Dynasty, the dispute between Jinwenand Guwen was a part of the disputes of Sinology between Neo-Confucianism, and the dispute evolved into a pivot of political and academic transformation in the late Qing and early Republic of China.With a view to reforming the ritual system by returning to the ancient political system, the movement which reexamine Chinese studies from disciplinary perspectives and discussed ancient history focused on differentiating and analyzing classics documents in order to eliminate the rationality of the political and educational system in Confucian ethics and rites.In the modern time, the New Culture generation of scholars promoted the historiography of classics.However, it is necessary to further probe into the academic division within traditional Chinese scholarship, and to study how the academic methods, issues and ideas inherited by scholars of different schools were developed and transcended by scholars of the Republic of China, leading to a pluralistic path in response to the integration of Chinese and western civilizations.In the 1930s, the historiography of classics had become a foregone conclusion.How to transcend the dispute of Jinwen and Guwen and deal with the ideas, methods and materials of classics in the way of history became the focus of the academic circle, thus opening a new round of controversy between Jinwen and Guwen.Scholars such as Qian Xuantong, Gu Jiegang and Meng Wentong called it ″Beyond the Jinwen″, and this transcendence and transformation became the starting point for scholars to practice new academic studies.In the academic circle of the Republic of China, there were different ways to inherit and surpass traditional Confucian classics.In the historical concept of the Guwen, the Six Classics were regarded as the ancient political documents, and the ancient history was separated from the spirit of Confucianism.The New Culture generation of scholars aimed to construct a course of internal cultural evolution course by means of historiography so as to change the study of classics into historiography, and construct the framework of Chinese cultural history without being limited by the Confucian re-creation of Chinese standard culture.The scholar Hu Shi put forward the idea of ″returning to Liao Ping″ to review the rationality of Liao Ping's division of Jinwen and Guwen by the system of rites.The scholar Qian Mu traced the academic evolution of Qin and Han Dynasties by historical facts, solved the dispute between Jinwen and Guwen, and was opposed to forced similarities and differences in the classics.Qian Xuantong and Gu Jiegang took a perspective of explicatory and analytical study, further historicized the issue of Jinwenand Guwen, and advocated going beyond the dispute over Jinwenand Guwen.Gu Jiegang advocated that Beyond the Jinwenshould absorb the criticism of Neo-Confucianism and the textual research of Sinology, so as to get rid of the old and bring forth the new, and clarify the evolution of Chinese history and culture.Based on Jinwen, Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng emphasized the dynamic interaction of Classics, institution, and historical facts, and examine the sciences from a Chinese-studies perspective.They attempted to carry forward the New Confucianism of Qin and Han Dynasties to establish the core values of Chinese civilization and construct the dynamic relationship between Confucianism and historical evolution.They started the Confucianism-oriented historiography in the modern academic context.By examining the historical context in which various schools of thought have transcended the debate between Jinwenand Guwen, and by integrating methods and objectives, we can not only examine the complex connotation of the transformation of modern classics and history, but also reflect on and enrich the methods and significance of current historical studies, in order to turn historical studies into the source of the subjectivity of civilization.

Abstract:During the middle of the Ming Dynasty when the doctrine of back to the ancients dominated in the circle of thinking,Tang Yin's view on literature had some spiritual similarities and different value priorities with the Former Seven Geniuses' doctrine of back to the ancients,Wang Yang-ming's ideaology and the Tang-Song school's inherent qualities.They had both similarities and differences in terms of philosophy,poetic theory,poetic proposition,and poetic creation.Tang Yin and other Wuzhong scholars,agreed with the Former Seven Geniuses' doctrine of back to the ancients,but the seven aimed to restore the classic poetry with Confucian traditions,while the Wuzhong scholars advocated the free presentation of emotions and talents.Tang Yin and Wang Yangming had some similarities in favor of the subjectivity of humans,but Tang Yin paid more attention to humans' emotions,natural requirements and individuality than his contemporaries.In terms of literary creation,Tang Yin acclaimed the real and natural expression of feelings and emotions,which had some similarities with the Tang-Song school's coherence of words and feelings.It is right to say in some way Tang Yin's literary creation influenced and enhanced the changes of the academic trend of the middle of the Ming Dynasty,and hence the role and influence of his distinctive creation can not be denied.

Abstract:Yu Yue’s academic view,literature view and drama view have some isomorphism.In aca-demic research,being the great academic master of southeast China in late Qing Dynasty,he wor-shiped Zheng Xuan’s classical research method,and regarded himself as the private student of Wang Niansun and Wang Yinzhi.In the literature field,he admired Bai Juyi in heart,advocated the smooth,beautiful,shallow and light literature style,and formed meaningful,subtle,fresh and smooth style in his poetry,drama and novels.While in the literature content he was strictly abided by the traditional Confucian education ethics,his novel and drama works had a thick preachy sig-nificance,and even expressed the tendency of writing the drama as the classics.All above was de-termined by his identity of scribe and classics.

Abstract:The Oriental Forum, journal of Qingdao University, is to start a column “Dissemination of Oriental Learning”, which, in my opinion, is a good idea put into practice at the right time. I am willing to say something about what I think. I have been paying special attention to cultural exchange, maintaining that culture should be exchanged in the spirit of both bringing in and sending over. As for exchanges between Chinese and western cultures, my basic point remains the same. For the time being, we should lay more emphasis on “brining in” in dealing with west or foreign culture. But we have no reason to ignore “easternization”, which is my coinage, while following “westernization”. Tracing historical facts has proved that in the history of Chinese and west culture exchange, the dissemination of oriental learning has never stopped. I consider the 21st century as that of “easternization”, through which oriental culture will take over the dominant position held by west culture in the world. Oriental culture will take the lead and take in the quintessence of west culture.

Abstract:It is a goal of the article that I want to give my interpretation to Yu Ying-shih's "Zhu-xi's historical world——Politic and Cultural Research of Literati in Song Dynasty".In the book,Yu Ying-shih criticizes the academic circle has an excessive tendency of the Confucian School of Idealist Philosophy.The rectification is really his contribution.But,facing the Confucian philosophy of Sagely Within,he lacks the understanding of sympathy,so he argues that we should abandon the ideal of Sagely Within and Kingly Without.Therefore Yu Ying-shih is from one extreme to another,and leaves a fundamental faulty.

Abstract:In recent decade,the research on overseas Chinese classics has become a new trend in the international sinology.There are profound internal and external reasons to this trend,and the formation of the trend is realized by newly- found materials which call for a new theoretical proposition and a new method of thinking. The"novelty"about the trend shows in the close-reading of new materials and the reflection of academic position of sinology,and these practices may be expected to initiate a new departure for the Chinese scholarship in the 21th century. In brief,the research paradigm will shift from"the Western dame"to"the Eastern daughter. "This paper focuses on the relationship between the Chinese literature and East Asian civilizations,and proposes five areas of research which may benefit from overseas classical texts in Chinese language. Abstract:Comparative poetics studies has currently become the mainstream of comparative literature studies in China and Chinese context.The comparative poetics scholars,employing the perspectives of Western hermeneutics and related theories as their academic references to study Chinese Confucian poetics,are in fact standing in the position of the third kind of poetics which integrates Chinese and Western poetics and makes something new.As Liu Xin(ca.50 B.C.-23 A.D.)'s earlier defining of "Jing" in the Triple Concordance Calendar(Santong Li),"Jing is the First and the One which governs the beginning," that is,an ontological notion.Compared with "Tao" in the poetics of Laozi and Zhuangzi,"Jing" is a hidden ontological category which serves as the root of Confucian poetics.Therefore,it is only through the belief in "Jing"that Confucian intellectuals can confirm the significance and value of the Way of the Sage.In the essay entitled "Confucianism"(Ru Shu) in 1934,Lu Xun(1881-1936) satirized Yuan Haowen and Zhang Dehui(1195—1275) who honored Borjigin Kublai(1215—1294),the Grand Progenitor of the Yuan Dynasty as "Grand Confucian Master." However,in the 21st century,Confucianism has gone global as a universal belief.Compared to the real Confucians,the Gong Yang scholars who employed the Confucian classics to discuss politics,the greatest regret of the contemporary Chinese academia is the lack of interventional public intellectuals.

Abstract:Purpose Academic contention occurs when research evidence is amenable to more than one interpretation. China has a long tradition of Shang Que (商榷), in which authors argue for their preferred interpretation. The modern form of this tradition is the Shang Que article, which often takes the form of research papers in Chinese-language journals and which tends to be question-oriented. Shang Que articles usually take the views of a particular author or article as the focus of independent and complete criticism by another, independent, academic. This paper explains the role of Shang Que articles in Chinese scholarship and their influence on international academia. Design/methodology/approach A bibliometric analysis was used to explore the characteristics and evolution of Chinese Shang Que articles using 30,577 articles published between 1979 and 2018. Microsoft Excel and Gephi were used for data analysis and visualization. Findings Findings suggest a decline in the number of Shang Que articles and an increase in the number of co-authors. Shang Que articles remained particularly prominent in Philosophy and Humanities and Social Sciences, where they focused on local issues such as classical Chinese, the Sinicization of Marxism and Chinese literature. This suggests that the number of Shang Que articles is related to the degree of internationalization of a research field. Originality/value Shang Que articles, which have been influenced by academic paradigms in English, are a fusion of China's Shang Que tradition and of the modern academic system. Through considering Shang Que articles, this paper explores the benefits of local academic traditions in non-English-speaking cultures.

Abstract:Chinese feudal history was characterized and in part sustained by the collaboration between the class-consciousness of cultural tradition and the social hierarchy in reality,which colluded to suppress the demand for equality.However,equality as the desire of the people never stopped the quest for means of realizing itself.In Chinese feudal history,equality was at best a psychological equilibrium achieved through the balance between being oppressed before achieving power and the oppression of others when in power.Central to such equilibrium was a pattern of revenge.
