Abstract:Faculty Governance, as a tradition of academic autonomy in the west, has broken away from the historical context of the medieval time, beginning to shift from pure academic autonomy to a shared model with the multi-participations. The formation of shared governance is the result of adaptation of university to social environment and points the tendency and future of Faculty Governance. Faculty Governance under shared governance involves professors in university governance as key stakeholders, emphasizes the coordination based on capability of each side, focuses on the publicity and negotiability, and changes the paradigm from power balance into power collaboration. Faculty Governance should be reconstructed in terms of governance institution, governance organization and governance culture. Only when Faculty Governance is placed in the framework of shared governance, can its modern significance retain new logic and practical foundation.
