On the Definition of Art Based on Stephen Davies’ Inquiry into the“First Arts”

Abstract:As an eminent researcher in analytic aesthetics , the study of the definition of art of Stephen Davies is not only a review , but also an insight on procedural definitions and functional definitions .By asking why the first arts were arts , he reflected the blind spots of the institutional theory of art:its diffi-culties to explain how the art world first appeared , and how the works were arts without those institutions . The analysis of Davies rethought the project of art definitions from another point of view , that is to say, the project of definition could be regarded as the basement of our seeking consensus and common under -standing of the arts .
