Abstract:This study focuses on the comparisons of the syntactic-semantic structures between English and Chinese middles from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and linguistic typology.The main findings are:i)The relative syntactic position of the theme of a middle causes the cross-category harmony of its predicate-argument role.ii)The degree of topicalization of a Chinese middle is greater than that of an English middle.The semantic restriction,derived from the theme of an English middle on its predicate,is greater than that of a Chinese middle on its predicate.iii)There are more verbs that can be used in Chinese middles than those used in English.iv)The predicate-argument structures between English middles and Chinese middles are different.The former is composed of "Vi+Adv" and the semantic restrictions between the two are weaker.The latter is composed of "Aux+Vi" and the semantic restrictions between the two are greater.

Abstract:The theoretic and practical achievements of the study on semantic categories in Russian and Chinese have their particular strong points and can learn from each other.We can build a multidimensional contrasting framework of Russian and Chinese semantic categories base on functional grammar theory,while absorbing the essence of each functional grammar schools,fusing some new elements of modern linguistic.It can serve as a good thought to choose those semantic categories with binary opposition relationship at the beginning of this large project,which has been proved by the binary relationship between space and time.

Abstract:This study was intended to investigate the effects of category learning types on category representation.55 Subjects were divided into two groups randomly and were asked to learn two categories through classification learning and inference learning respectively,then,subjects of two groups were told to rate typicality for the new test items.The results suggested that the classification learners rated the typicality merely by the diagnostic level of the test items and the inference learners rated the typicality mainly by the typical level of the test items.Therefore,diagnostic information played important role in classification learners' category representation,while typical information played important role in inference learners' category representation,that is,different category learning types resulted in different category representation.

Abstract:Hedges,as an important subject of fuzzy language study,servr as the evidence,from within the language itself,to reveal that category boundaries are fuzzy.This paper focuses on the study of one of hedges'major semantic functions——category modification.Based on the modified classification of hedges as category modifiers,the paper compared their linguistic realizations in English with those in Chinese,and discusses the specific ways im which they exert their influence on restructuring categories in the two languages.

Abstract:Although both comparative sentences and metaphorical sentences represent the similarities or differences between two things, the boundary of them is not clear and always changing as Chinese is changing continually. As to our research, the ways of development of some comparative sentences are different from the metaphorical sentences. Therefore, on the basis of previous research, this paper will propose a new and explicit criteria for classifying them in three aspects, that is, syntactic form, meaning of sentence, semantic categorization. While differentiating them, we also categorize and analyze those doubtful cases by the theory of prototype scope of cognitive.

Abstract:Adverbs of sphere”, as they are often called, should go to four different adverb sub-classes. The differences among these four sub-classes lie in both their semantic features and their combining functions. This paper attempts to study the differences from four aspects and it is suggested that the further classification of adverbs into sub-categories should observe not only the standard of semantic features but also that of combining functions. The two standards should permeate through each other and prove each other.
Comparison study of using semantic and syntactic network characteristics to do text clustering

Abstract:The study builds six dependence syntactic networks and semantic networks based on syntactic and semantic treebanks of different genres and does a comparative analysis of overall features of the networks, including the number of edges, the number of the nodes, the average degree, the clustering coefficient, the average path length, the centraliza-tion, the diameter, the index of power-law, and the coefficient of determination. The article tries multi-methods, with fea-tures as variables, to do clustering analysis of these networks. The results show that, although the syntactic and semantic networks all follow the linguistic principles, there are obvious differences between syntax and semantic networks. The meanings of the network parameters vary and the clustering results according to the parameters are different. Using the combinations of main semantic network parameters can obtain relatively reasonable clustering results, but it cannot distin-guish well written style from colloquialism while using the combinations of main syntactic network parameters can well distinguish different styles of texts and obtain reasonable text clustering results.
Typical Semantic Features of Japanese Adjectives

Abstract:Part-of-speech classification is one of the most controversial issues in the theory of Japanese linguistics. According to the related research of Chinese linguistics in this field, Japanese adjectives may be divided into state adjectives and attribute adjectives in terms of meaning. This article sums up the typical semantic features of Japanese adjectives, so as to sort out the related parts of speech within the same continuum and to distinguish the semantic differences and correlations of the sub-categories of the adjectives. Finally, some phenomena in Japanese linguistics will be explained.

However, the prototype theory put forward in the 1970s challenged this classical theory. Adopting a cognition approach to semantics, prototype theory deals with fuzziness in terms of the relationship between typical and non typical members. This thesis intends to introduce its origin and main contents as well as analyze the fuzziness of common categories on the basis of the theory.

Abstract:English SVOC structure and Chinese Jianyu structure share considerable similarities. A contrastive study of these two structures shows that verb occupies a kernel position in these two structures. The verb categories in English SVOC structure and those in Chinese Jianyu structures have no correspondence, but they have undergone the similar process of grammaticalization, that is, they are derived either from words with the meaning of causation, or from grammatical metaphor.

Abstract:In the contrast of classification learning and inference learning,we presented pairs of testing stimuli and asked the participants to select a more typical A from them,and then asked the participants to draw pictures of a typical A and a typical B.These testing stimuli were different in diagnosticity or prototipicality.According to the results,we conclude that classification learners are influenced primarily by diagnotic information,while inference learners are influenced much more by the prototypical information.In other words,classification learners focus on between-category information,and inference learners focus on within-category information.

Abstract:Inter-sentential lexical connective devices refer to applying certain inter-sentential lexical words as connective devices in coherent discourses.Connectives are one of the most usual inter-sentential connective devices,and their basic function is to realize connection between language units.Time and space are the two basic existing forms of any substance,and they are reflected in coherent discourses forming space-time system of the coherent discourses.In this space-time system,single independent sentences are closely connected together in space-time relationships.Therefore,adverbs can also have certain connective functions.The inter-sentential connective devices between scientific discourses and literary works differ much.This distinction is determined by the characteristics of the two genres and the general genre characteristics determine the application of various language devices.

Abstract:Characterizing judgments of similarity within a perceptual or semantic domain, and making inferences about the underlying structure of this domain from these judgments, has an increasingly important role in cognitive and systems neuroscience. We present a new framework for this purpose that makes limited assumptions about how perceptual distances are converted into similarity judgments. The approach starts from a dataset of empirical judgments of relative similarities: the fraction of times that a subject chooses one of two comparison stimuli to be more similar to a reference stimulus. These empirical judgments provide Bayesian estimates of underling choice probabilities. From these estimates, we derive indices that characterize the set of judgments in three ways: compatibility with a symmetric dis-similarity, compatibility with an ultrametric space, and compatibility with an additive tree. Each of the indices is derived from rank-order relationships among the choice probabilities that, as we show, are necessary and sufficient for local consistency with the three respective characteristics. We illustrate this approach with simulations and example psychophysical datasets of dis-similarity judgments in several visual domains and provide code that implements the analyses at <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://github.com/jvlab/simrank" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>.

Abstract:Algebraic theories with dependency between sorts form the structural core of Martin-Löf type theory and similar systems. Their denotational semantics are typically studied using categorical techniques; many different categorical structures have been introduced to model them (contextual categories, categories with families, display map categories, etc.) Comparisons of these models are scattered throughout the literature, and a detailed, big-picture analysis of their relationships has been lacking. We aim to provide a clear and comprehensive overview of the relationships between as many such models as possible. Specifically, we take *comprehension categories* as a unifying language and show how almost all established notions of model embed as sub-2-categories (usually full) of the 2-category of comprehension categories.

Abstract:Based on the common ideas on grammatical forms and grammatical meanings, it is pointed out in this paper that grammatical meanings are basically distinguished from lexical meanings and pragmatic meanings in their ability to determine grammatical forms and, in return, in the possibility to be constrained by forms. Paradigmatic classes of the semantic features determine the categories of semantic features; syntagmatic choices of semantic features determine the categories of semantic relations; semantic feature categories consist of lexical feature categories and syntactic feature categories; semantic relations consist of semantic argument categories, semantic role categories, and semantic association categories. Consequentially, we can re-define grammatical categories, formal categories, lexical categories, syntactic categories, semantic features, semantic structures, semantic relations, semantic arguments, semantic roles, semantic association, semantic reference, and semantic categories. Finally, we discuss the classification of semantic categories to help modernize and pluralize the study on Chinese grammar.

Abstract:Classifiers in Chinese can be seen as a grammatical category, compared with measure words that have content meanings. However, classifiers still exhibit some syntactic features of the noun, in that, for example, some classifiers can be reduplicated, or modified by adjectives, or followed by nominal affixes. These features verify that de-categorization is a gradual process. Generally speaking, classifiers that can be collocated with animate nouns are more grammaticalized than those with inanimate nouns.
