Although it was the poet's personal account of history, yet a lot of people and events were mentioned, especially the contention between the two different schools headed by Niu and Li. It is of great significance if we use this as a case to explore the relationship between the political events and literature in Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:Liu xizai is a famous writer in literary criticism in late Qing Dynasty,whose book The Sum of Literature gives a high and correct evaluation of Li bai's poems and is quite creative.This is exhibited in these aspects: the origin of Li bai 's poems can be traced back to Zhuang and Sao;Li bai had great ambitions and wanted to assist a ruler in governing a country,but his poems often represent the opposition;his words have proper limits in essence;Li bai's poems have elegant content and rhythm and besides,he often has Promethean verses.

Abstract:In his manuscript Rong An Guan Zha Ji,Qian Zhongshu offers harsh criticism upon Xu Yueqing,the Neo-Confucian poet of the late Song dynasty.His critical remarks contain abundant poetic thoughts.With reference to the interrelated contents in Tan Yi Lu,Song shi Xuan zhu and Guan zhui Bian,we can interpretate the connotation of Mr.Qian's remarks.Meanwhile,we should also probe into Mr.Qian's brilliant views on the relationship among Neo-Confucianism,moral integrity,and the poetry of the late Song dynasty,and thus reexamine the position of such elements as Neo-Confucianism and moral integrity in Mr.Qian's poetry evaluation system.

Abstract:Abstract Contra the consensus view of the Shi jing 詩經 (Classic of Odes) and Chu ci 楚辭 (Verses of Chu) as the products of two distinct literary cultures, one northern and one southern, this article argues on the basis of intertextual analysis that the Chu ci developed in direct response to the Shi jing . The foremost poem in the anthology, the “Li sao” 離騷 (Parting's Sorrow) emerges as a metadiscursive journey through various Shi jing archetypes, the goal of which is to authorize its hero to say farewell to his ruler and homeland—a possibility denied by Shi jing poetics. A final section explores the relationship between the oppositional poetics of the “Li sao” and the rest of the Chu ci . The article concludes with some reflections on the limitations of the north–south model for historians of early Chinese literature.

Abstract:Bai Juyi's parable poems were conformed to their creative aim and stylistic requirements by using a lot of allegories and verbal phrases,which could be sometimes misread by lecturers.In addition,colloquial speech was not frequently used in the parable poems in the whole Tang poetry.The merits of alertness and apprehensibility in Bai Juyi's poetry were not due to its colloquialism or vernacularism,but came from its concise themes,specified literary speech and vivid description.However,the critics in the Song Dynasty improperly labeled Bai's poems with the mark of "vulgarity".

Abstract:Abstract This article discusses three topics. First, it discusses the line “I could not fill my slanting basket” 不盈頃筐 in the poem “Juan er” 卷耳. The Anhui University Bamboo Slip version’s qing 頃 (slanting) is written . This, as with the Chu Silk Manuscript character, should be explained as qi 攲 (lopsided). Second, regarding the line “Do you not understand me?” 不諒人只 in the poem “Bai zhou” 柏舟 of the Yong Airs 鄘風 section, the Anhui University Bamboo Slip version of liang 諒 (understanding) is written jing 京. This character should be understood as qiang 強 in the sense of “coerce/force” 強迫. In the line “Supporting King Wu” 涼彼武王 in the poem “Da ming” 大明 of the Major Elegantiae 大雅, liang 涼 is similarly explained as 強 in the sense of “coerce” 威強. These two characters have always been traditionally glossed as either “trust” 信 or “assist” 佐. Third, regarding the line “... it cannot be recited” 不可讀也 of the poem “Qiang you ci” 牆有茨, du 讀 (reciting) in the Han Poetry 韓詩 is glossed in the sense of “record and narrate” 記述, which is superior to the traditional gloss.
On Song Lian's Activities and Literary Creation in Various Circumstances

Abstract:Song Lian was born in the late Yuan dynasty in the Wu zhou prefecture, which was distinguished by Neo-Confucians as ″Little Zou-Lu ″, referring to the native places of Mencius and Confucius respectively. His te achers, like Huang Jin, Liu Guan and Wu Lai, were all famous Confucian scholars. His failure in the imperial civil examinations, along with the social upheaval and political corruption that characterized his time, caused Song Lian to loose confidence in the Yuan regime. As fate would have it, he united with Zhu Yuanzha ng, expending great effort assisting the latter on the way from the hero of the common people up to the founding emperor of the Ming dynasty. In the early Ming period, Song Lian, receiving a lot of special treatment from Emperor Zhu, wrote quite a few essays in praise of him. No wonder, people today tend to detest him in this regard. However, the other side of the coin is that Song Lian's exceedingly harsh living conditions in the beginning of the Ming dynasty caused a big change in his ment ality and literary creation. Firstly, many of Song's essays prior to the Ming ma de a most telling exposure and scathing criticism of the late Yuan's maladminist ration, malpractice, and ghastly ways of the world. His essays of this nature du ring the early Ming, however, were greatly reduced in number and much less trenc hant. Secondly, Song's essays prior to the Ming were subjective, aggressive, for ceful and unrestrained. But, his essays in the early Ming were chiefly persuasiv e, being solemn and refined in style and mild and reserved in tone. Thirdly, Son g Lian as a minister showed loving concern for those at the bottom of society, a nd he wrote biographies for Li Ge, Du Huan, Li Yi and others, praising their goo d virtue and strong character.

Abstract:The"Conclusion on Yanzhou's Later Years"is a disputed issue,which was discussed by such scholars as Wang Xi-jue,Li Wei-zhen,Jiao Hong,Qian Qian-yi,Chen Tian and officers of Siku.They emphasized on Wang Shi-zhen's literary thoughts in his later years in order to deny his early literary ideas.Qian Qian-yi put up with"Wang's regrets in his old age",which was criticized by Qian Zhong-shu for his wrong quotations.However,what Qian Qian-yi insisted may not be distrusted thoroughly as long as Wang's literature in his later years was carefully studied.Wang changed greatly in terms of context,learning objectives,writing methods and aesthetic intention.However,aprofound and learned scholar,Wang was did not go from one extreme to another.He just"amended the thoughts along with the time"so as"not to mislead others".

On the Artistic Features of "Feng Poetry" through an Analysis of the Ballad Structure

Abstract:The author reexamines the characteristics of the lyrical poetry in Poetry Guo Feng by making a comparison between Feng poetry and the ballads recorded in Pre-Qin Books. He points out that a ballad is the direct expressions of the poet, who makes a reaction to something happened. Both Feng poetry and the ballads are lyrics that either express emotions or describe an isolated act or scenery. They do not portray the whole process of a story. In order to identify the theme and find out what engaged the poet’s attention for his reaction in the poem, one must look for references outside the text. It is commonly accepted that poetry is beyond translation. Given the fact that any type of interpretation of Poetry is subjective, Qian argues that the introduction to Mao Poetry, which was created in the time closest to the period when Feng Poetry was compiled, remains to be reexamined for its scholarly significance.
