Abstract:Based on a thorough study of the implications and key techniques of intelligent manufacturing,this paper proposes three development models and specific technical approaches to assist in China's transition from digital manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing.Starting from the production characteristics of a typical industry,it puts forward a corresponding technical roadmap for the development of intelligent manufacturing.This roadmap provides guidance for technical approaches that can promote the development of China's manufacturing industry from digital manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing.

Abstract:The reconfigurable CNC system plays an important role for the Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems. The relationship between Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems, Reconfigurable CNC system and open CNC system was analyzed to synthesize CNC system by the hardware and software mode. The focus is on a new application of Field Programmable Gates Array(FPGA) in Reconfiguralbe CNC system, which integrated Programmable Logical Device and Reconfigurable Hardware Technology. After the investigation of its possibility and economic feasibility, the future development of this system is predicted, so that CNC systems can be reconfigurated with this innovative method. An example of economical reconfigurable CNC system is provided to test its feasibility and availability.
Study of Process Planning Techniques for Reconfigurable Machine Tool Design

Abstract:The operation clustering over the entire part family is the prerequisite for reconfigurable machine tool (RMT) design. Based on analysis of the process planning for RMT design, tolerance-based and concurrent-machining-based clustering method for a single part were proposed, and the mathematic model and algorithm of the pattern recognition for recognizing the similar sub-operation group within the entire part family were established. With studying the similarity measure between the single part operation clustering and improving k-means algorithm, a clustering method for multi-part operations was presented. The results show that the complexity and reconfiguration cost of machine tools can be reduced evidently by identifying and clustering the similar operations over the entire part family, which can benefit RMT design.

Abstract:To meet new needs of shorter production life cycle and changing product varieties, reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) requires rapid reconfiguration for related modules of reconfigurable machine tool (RMT)according to different part features. Design and configuration of machine tool are closely linked with process plan features of parts, so the selection of its configuration is to a great extent dependent on experience of technicians. In the paper, both configuration selection scheme of RMT based part process features and the acquisition method of configuration design knowledge are presented. Based on artificial principle and method, the design and reconfiguration architecture for RMT is constructed and based on the architecture the configuration selection system for RMT is also developed which is based on rough sets (RS) theory, extracts expert knowledge of design and configuration, and eventually presents needed results. In the last, a case is also presented to verify its effectivity and efficiency.

Abstract:Reconfigurable machine tool (RMT) is the core facility of the reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS), which can provide customised flexibility for RMS through reconfiguration. The reconfiguration of RMT is complicated due to unpredictable changes in demand and the flexibility of RMT, where new RMT should be designed to satisfy the new demand. The concept of digital twin of RMT is introduced to solve complex reconfiguration problems by executing reconfiguration experiments on high-fidelity virtual RMT. Considering the design processes of RMT during reconfiguration, three building blocks for digital twin of RMT should be studied thoroughly, including structure design, configuration generation, and configuration evaluation. First, the structure design of RMT for multi-part families is studied, including the design principles, module division, and design method. Second, the configuration generation process of RMT based on the results of the structure design is analysed, where quantitative description of configuration is proposed to facilitate the generation process. Third, configuration evaluation is presented to confirm the performance of each configuration based on kinematics analysis. Finally, a case study is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed three building blocks for digital twin of RMT during reconfiguration to obtain suitable design scheme of RMT.

Abstract:Developing advanced manufacturing equipments and improving capability and utility of available manufacturing equipments, are one of the effective measures for improving the benefit of manufacturing enterprices. Consisting parts and interface issues of manufacturing equipments are probed from the angle of reconfiguration. Similarities and differences between machining center and robot are discussed. Requirments for force fit insertion assembly operation are explained. Assembly is the down stream operation of manufacturing processes, which has decisive influence on the quality of products, and most assembly operations are insertion operations. In order to assure operation quality and improve the efficiency, being aimed at the requirments of insertion,especially,at the force fit insertion, design features of reconfigurable robotized machining center and robotized drilling/assembly machine tool are explained. Building of the two prototypes are introduced and some experimental results are given.
Modular Design Method for Control of Reconfigurable Machine Tools

Abstract:A design method for constructing a hierarchical structure controller with control modules was proposed for synchronously reconfiguring the control and machine of reconfigurable machine tool(RMT). In this method,the entire controller and its individual control module at every level acted as a set consisting of a finite state machine (FSM) with input output event set pairs. Each pair of input output event set was defined as a port of the control module, and the input event set on a given port formed the port-acceptable language. Thus, when the mechanical modules are assembled, the control modules can be connected using port language, which constructs the higher control module until the entire controller is connected. Thereby, the control and machine reconfiguration of RMTs occurs synchronously. Based on the introduction of FSM expression for discrete event systems, the definitions of control module with FSM, module combination, as well as the design and construction theory of modular controller was given. Using this theory, once the control modules are properly designed and connected, the resulting controller is guaranteed to be controllable.

Abstract:Reconfigurable Machine Tools (RMTs) have been developed in response to agile flexible manufacturing demands. Current design methodologies for RMTs support modular reconfigurability in which a machine configuration is assembled for a given part. In this paper, on the other hand, reconfigurability relies on redundancy, namely, a desired RMT configuration is obtained through topological reconfiguration by locking/unlocking degrees-of-freedom (dof). Thus, in order to design a Redundant Reconfigurable Machine Tool (RRMT) with all of its dof already included, a new multi–tier optimization based design methodology was developed. The design is formulated for the efficient selection of the best architecture from a set of serial/parallel/hybrid solutions, while considering the redundant reconfigurability effect on performance. The viability of the methodology is demonstrated herein via a design test case of a Parallel Kinematic Mechanism (PKM)-based Redundant Reconfigurable meso-Milling Machine Tool (RRmMT) that can attain high stiffness at the high feed-rate required in meso-milling.

Abstract:The connotations of reconfigurable manufacturing system, reconfigurable machine tool and reconfigurable CNC system, and the interrelationship between them are discussed. A reconconfigurable CNC system based on the open architecture controller is put forward, and the feasibility of the reconfigurable system is analyzed. The implementing mechanism and developing flow by the component technology are discussed. The practicability of this solution is validated by a newly developed sample of reconfigurable CNC system.

Abstract:In this paper,a design Method of the reconfigurable CNC system is proposed.This method adopts a structure of dividing control units and driving units into standardized stand-alone cards.Different cards are connected by bus.System structure can be changed flexibly according to the specific needs.The hardware of the CNC system designed with this method can be applied for multi-purposes: by changing CPU platform or configuring different software codes,control functionalities for different devises can be achieved,cutting-down hardware investment and shorten the design cycle of CNC products.

Abstract:The kinematic function scheme is the basis of the reconfigurable machine tool (RMT) design. However, the diversity and complexity of the scheme are not conducive to the realisation of reconfiguration. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a solution method of the kinematic function scheme based on kinematic transformation. A tool-feature pose matrix is established based on an analysis of the relationship between machining surface features and machining tools to obtain a kinematic function expression that shows the kinematic requirements of the machine tool. The kinematic feature domain and the kinematic transformation domain are used to describe the motion type, motion direction and other information to describe the kinematic parameters of the module. The solution method of the kinematic function chain based on the kinematic decomposition and module combination is proposed to establish the kinematic function scheme of a RMT.

Abstract:Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMSs) has emerged as an advanced system for applying Enterprise Systems (ES) in manufacturing enterprises to dynamically adapt to the changing market. Although it has been recognized that human-machine interaction plays a significant role in configuration design, especially for reconfigurable machines tools (RMTs), for the core of RMS, there are no platforms available for the harmonious interaction between human and computer, mainly because of the limitation of traditional artificial intelligence frame. In this paper, we present a human-machine design methodology for the configuration of RMTs based on imaginal thinking, a thinking style described as forming and comparison of images, which is radically different from traditional logical and intuitive thinking. The knowledge and experience that are highly relevant to mechanical design and the related information in logical deduction are organized as high dimensional images. By imitating human imaginal thinking, computer employs Lie subgroup or submanifold and Quotient kinematics to generate all possible configurations in the form of images, while humans make judgments and complete the optimization process through the imaginal human-machine interface. Both human's decision-making ability based on knowledge and experience and computer's high-speed logical computation are exploited to a full extent. This novel design methodology has illustrated its effectiveness by an example concerning the design of a pipe-cutting RMT.

Abstract:To improve production rates and the economic benefits, process parameters need to be monitored and adjusted automatically in the machining. At present, it is mainly concentrated on the study of the algorithms about tool wearing and tool breakage, and theory modeling of interrelated models in the processing machining. The monitoring systems independent of CNC are also investigated to realize the status monitoring on external parts, which result in lower integration and difficulty in operation. Consequently, a modular and configurable machining system of three axis milling is established, with the ability of constant cutting force, which is a part of CNC system and can coordinate with traditional CNC to implement the function of integration state monitoring. With this system it can realize the real time status monitoring in machining, and improve the work-piece's quality and efficiency by controlling the constant cutting force between the work-piece and the tool. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:Aiming at solving the problems of limited function in teaching equipments, high purchase investment and multiple students sharing one equipment in the practice of metal machining and the training of mechanical courses for mechanical engineering students, a miniaturized, multi-functional, reconfigurable, open, desktop design method for turn-milling compound teaching machining have been proposed, which can realize the integration of turning, milling, turn-milling, drilling, grinding and other process capability. A teaching machine tool prototype have also been developed, which has the characteristic of multiple functions, modularization and low cost. It has strong operability and can carry out basic, comprehensive and innovative training experiments for mechanical engineering majors, which can also be extended to the experimental teaching in domestic and foreign colleges.

Abstract:Future manufacturing enterprises must significantly improve their product capabilities and manufacturing systems designs to increase market share and to enhance competitive core competencies. This paper analyzes the theory and methodology of reconfigurable design that manufacturing enterprises urgently need. Reconfigurability based on topological similarity was defined with a generalized axiomatic design theory. The theory takes into account not only the mimimum independent functional requirements, but also their interactions which can not be ignored. Related theorems, consequences and equations were also given. The result shows that the theory can be successfully applied to a rapid reconfigurable manufacturing system.
