Abstract:The contradictions and confrontations between China and the USA in the later period of the Resistance War againstJapan disclosed in Chiang Kai-shek’s diary were far more grave than most people today realize. After the breakout of thePacific War,the USA’s actions on several issues,such as its preference of European strategy over Asian strategy,were se-verely dissatisfying to Chiang. Chiang gradually began to doubt the sincerity of Roosevelt’s b0ldness,motivations,and sup-port for China. Chiang thought that the USA was attempting to dominate the Far East and worried that China would competewith the USA for the leadership of Asia in the future.The Cairo Conference was a very important meeting of the heads of al-lied countries during the War,but Chiang’s attitude toward the conference was much less positive than people have hithertothought,and China kept a low profile in the preparatory work and conference meetings. The influence of China’s internalaffairs on the Stilwell Incident cannot be overlooked. Chiang regarded Sun Ke as the leader favored by the USA. Chiang Kai-shek thought that militarily the USA would replace him with Stilwell,and politically replace him with Sun Ke.To a cer-tain extent this judgment affected Chiang’s handling of the issue of Stilwell’s command power. As the Chiang-Stilwell struggle intensified,Chiang on one occasion considered resigning his post. Although there were no big confrontations be-tween China and the USA after Stilwell was recalled,the distrust on both sides would resurface whenever the situation hadany changes.
