Abstract:5/3 JinanTragedy(1928) is an indication of the changing East-Asian relations.Under the restraint of the Washington Treaty,Japan tolerated the victory of the Revolutionary Army of the Republic of China in the southern areas of the Changjiang River. When the Nationalist Government decided to start on the second Northern Expedition to unite China,Tanaka Giichi, however, shifted to a Violent Interference Policy.Since very contradictory accounts of JinanTragedy were given by China and Japan,Chiang's government decided to set aside the dispute, and take a roundabout route to go north to fight against the warlords.Avoiding a large-scale conflict, the Nationalist Government gained international support morally.Tanaka's policy failed to separate the three Northern provinces from China, but intensified Chinese people's hatred and distrust of Japan, instead. With the connivance of Tanaka, the Japanese army of Northeastern China blasted Zhang Zuo-ling to death, which, quite contradictory to Japan's expectation, led to the fact that the warlords in the Northeastern China changed their banner and submitted to the Nationalist Government to leave Japan more isolated internationally.
