Abstract:The course of mechanical design is to enable students in the university to understand, analyze and improve current machines as well as invent and develop new machines. Modern machines are mechatronic instead of pure mechanical systems. However, traditional lecture mainly introduces the knowledge of analysis and design of linkage, cam mechanism, gear mechanism and other mechanisms and mechanical parts, which are only part of machines and not the whole system and its development. To let students have a full image of the whole machine and its development, a project based teaching practice have been performed for the course of mechanism and machine theory in Shanghai Jiao Tong University for more than a decade. In this paper, firstly, the functional structure of a mechatronic machine is introduced using three subsystems to reveal the essence of modern machines. Then, the curriculum boundary and list of knowledge points are defined. A marathon model is put forward to define the relationship between lecturers and the students. And a twin-timeline model is proposed to coordinate the in-class lecture and out-of-class project practice. Finally, a case study is briefly introduced to outline the teaching practice.
