Abstract:The channel distribution of the transient power overshoots, caused by the channels adding up, in backward pumped Raman amplified wavelength division multiplexed systems is studied experimentally. It is found that the time for the output power of different signal to drop from the maximum values to the minimum values is not equal to each other. The shorter the signal wavelength is, the smaller the time is. And the shape of the channel distribution of the maximal value of the power overshoot in the output signal is similar to that of the system ON-OFF gain distribution.

Abstract:A time dependent 3D model for pulsed diode-pumped Rb vapor laser is established by using the methods of circular cutting and alternating-direction implicit (ADI). The model is validated by comparing with Zhao's experiment. The spatiotemporal distributions of intensities of pump light and laser, and population densities of different energy levels are presented and discussed in a single-pulse diode-pumped Rb vapor laser. The lasing dynamics and characteristics of a multi-pulse diode-pumped Rb vapor laser are also calculated and analyzed, and results show that higher peak power and average power of each laser pulse can be obtained if the pump power is greater. Moreover, for constant pump pulse width, the peak power of subsequent laser pulses (in addition to the first pulse) increases with increasing time interval between two adjacent pump pulses. For constant time interval between two adjacent pump pulses, the large pump pulse width is not conducive to improving the peak power of subsequent laser pulses.

Abstract:This study demonstrates comparisons of power to failure for SiGe based low noise amplifiers under the injection of high-power microwave (HPM) pulses. A general equation was derived to calculate power to failure. The pulse thermal resistance and breakdown temperature are calculated and determined. It is found that although these two transistors have close structure, their power to failure depend on the number of slots, pulse thermal resistance, thermal capacitance and breakdown temperature. Calculated and measured results show close correlations.

Abstract:Amplified spontaneous Raman emission under picosecond pulse pumping is studied in detail both experimentally and numerically. It is found that the Raman output pulses are noise-like with partial coherence, which has important implications for various applications. Numerical simulation reproduces the finding well, along with the temporal and spectral dependence of the Raman pulse on the pump pulse energy. The numerical simulations of the temporal, spectral, and energy evolution of the Raman and pump pulse along the fiber gives insight on how to design such sources.

Abstract:In plasma-based backward Raman amplifiers, the output pulse intensity increases with the input pump pulse intensity, as long as the Langmuir wave mediating energy transfer from the pump to the seed pulse remains intact. However, at high pump intensity, the Langmuir wave breaks, at which point the amplification efficiency may no longer increase with the pump intensity. Numerical simulations presented here, employing a one-dimensional Vlasov-Maxwell code, show that, although the amplification efficiency remains high when the pump only mildly exceeds the wavebreaking threshold, the efficiency drops precipitously at larger pump intensities.

Abstract:The pulse working of gain-switched laser diodes (LDs) provides more power than continuous-wave (CW) emission. Similar to the CW emission, the pulse emission affects by the structural properties and different loss mechanisms of the active region. In this paper, both of these parameters are investigated in InGaN-based LDs, numerically. It is found that the thickness of the InGaN quantum well (QW) have an influence on the transient pulse, and at high enough injection currents, the thinner QW with a higher loss in CW mode can produce a stronger transient peak emission. The study of loss mechanisms in these structures indicates that the cause of the strong emission in thinner QWis mainly from the higher carrier concentration inside the active layer, which decreases significantly by Auger recombination and carrier leakage. The results of this paper can help to have a better understanding about pulse emission power from InGaN-based LDs.
Transmission Performance Analysis of Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers for Wdm System

Abstract:A numerical analysis is presented on the long-haul wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system employing fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) cascades based on one-pump FOPA model with Raman Effect taken into account. The end-to-end equalization scheme is applied to optimize the system features in terms of proper output powers and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in all the channels. The numerical results show that—through adjusting the fiber spans along with the number of FOPAs as well as the channel powers at the terminals in a prescribed way—the transmission distance and system performance can be optimized. By comparing the results generated by different lengths of fiber span, we come to the optimal span length to achieve the best transmission performance. Furthermore, we make a comparison among the long-haul WDM transmission systems employing different inline amplifiers, namely, FOPA, erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and Fiber Raman Amplifier (FRA). FOPA demonstrates its advantage over the other two in terms of system features.

Abstract:Experiments are reported on the effects of electron prebunching in a mildly relativistic, low-current (200-KV, 1-A) free-electron laser amplifier operating in the collective (Raman) regime at a frequency of approximately 10 GHz. Prebunching is established by injecting an electromagnetic wave into a bifilar helical wiggler and then transporting the bunched beam into a second magnetic wiggler region. The wave growth rate is deduced from measurements of the radiation intensity as a function of interaction length. Observations show that prebunching can increase the radiation growth rate manyfold as compared with a system without prebunching. Studies are presented both in the small-signal (linear) regime, and in the nonlinear (saturated) regime. >

Abstract:The key remaining technological challenge to the realization of further power scaling for high-power fiber laser systems is overcoming the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect. In past years, chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings (CTFBGs) have been demonstrated to be a simple and effective way to suppress SRS in high-power fiber amplifiers. However, the weak reflection at the Bragg wavelength could be strongly amplified, which not only limits the power and efficiency but also degrades the beam quality. We report here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the influence of the residual Bragg reflection of CTFBGs on SRS suppression in high-power fiber laser systems. Two groups of CTFBGs with different Bragg reflection wavelengths are fabricated and used for the comparison experiments. Test results show that the CTFBGs of longer Bragg wavelengths have a better suppression effect, in particular, at a higher power level. By further moving the Bragg wavelength of a CTFBG out of the Raman gain spectral range, a better suppression effect and a promotion in laser efficiency could be achieved, which is very useful for further power scaling.

Abstract:A rate-equation-based model is established to describe the behavior of an intracavity optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped in an actively -switched Raman laser system. The intracavity photon densities and the initial population inversion density are assumed to be Gaussian distribution. These coupled rate equations are solved numerically. In the experiment, a laser diode end-pumped acousto-optically -switched KTP-OPO pumped by a Nd:YAG/ Raman laser is demonstrated. The output characteristics are studied carefully. And the experimental results about the average output power agree with the numerical solutions.

Abstract:The generation of unwanted higher-order Raman effects is the main factor restricting the power scaling of Raman fiber amplifiers (RFAs). This phenomenon arises from an interplay of physical processes, including stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), four-wave mixing (FWM), and the intricate temporal and spectral dynamics. Tapered fibers have demonstrated excellent nonlinear effects suppression characteristics due to the varying core diameter along the fiber, which is widely used in ytterbium-doped fiber lasers. In this paper, a comprehensive numerical investigation is conducted on the core-pumping tapered fiber RFAs considering Raman-assisted FWM. The higher-order Raman power in the tapered fiber is always kept at a low level, showing a weak Raman-assisted FWM effect. A numerical investigation is conducted to study the impact of the tapering ratio, the lengths of the thin part, tapered region, and thick part on the higher-order Raman threshold of RFAs. Furthermore, the impact of phase mismatch variations caused by changes in the seed wavelength, on the output signal power and nonlinear effects is analyzed. This paper presents, for the first time, a study on core-pumped RFAs using tapered fibers, providing a novel perspective on enhancing the power of RFAs.

Abstract:This paper aims at numerically simulating gain recovery enhancement effect in SOAs when a CW pump light is applied. An effective carrier lifetime model was given and used to investigate the pump power and wavelength dependence of SOA effective carrier lifetime. Effective carrier lifetime reduction behaviors and gain saturation curves at the signal wavelength were simulated. Gain dynamics introduced by short pulse amplification in a CW pumped SOA were also simulated to visualize the recovery enhancement effect.

Abstract:In this paper, a picosecond synchronously pumped solid-state Raman laser with KGW crystal is theoretically studied and numerically simulated. The output pulse waveforms and Raman output characteristics are compared when pumping wavelengths are 532 nm and 1064 nm, respectively. The transient nonlinear coupling equations of stimulated Raman scattering are adopted, and solved numerically. The effects of Raman cavity length detuning, output mirror reflectivity, pumping power, Raman crystal length and pumping pulse width on the conversion of the 1st Stokes pulse are investigated. The simulation results show that the performance of 532 nm synchronously pumped solid-state Raman laser is much better than that of 1064 nm in terms of optical conversion efficiency, pulse width compression, output power and so on, due to higher Raman gain and dispersion at 532 nm. The principle of transient stimulated Raman scattering can be better understood by numerical simulation, and the results can help design and optimize picosecond synchronously pumped solid-state Raman laser.

Abstract:We investigate pulse cleaning behaviors in short-pulse-pumped optical parametric amplifiers (OPA). We theoretically study the contrast enhancement of amplified signal pulse and generated idler pulse, and reveal their dependence on the parametric gain in both the regimes of small signal and saturated amplifications. The signal contrast enhancement is nearly equal to the parametric gain, while the idler contrast is approximately equal to the product of the contrasts of the pump and signal pulses in a low gain OPA and increases with the gain. The effects of group-velocity mismatch and group-velocity dispersion on the contrast enhancement are also investigated. The results presented in this paper are of value for pulse cleaning.

Abstract:We present a general study of pulse amplification in silicon Raman amplifiers, with special emphasis on the effects of spectral compression and group delay due to the Raman gain dispersion. We use the undepleted-pump approximation to analytically calculate the dynamics of an arbitrary pulse spectra and find the temporal profile of the pulse at the amplifier's output. We show that cw-pumped silicon waveguides are extremely inefficient in amplification of subpicosecond optical pulses but provide large net gains and controllable group delays for pulses with widths of ∼10 ps.

Abstract:Raman fiber lasers (RFLs), which are based on the stimulated Raman scattering effect, generate laser beams and offer distinct advantages such as flexibility in wavelength, low quantum defects, and absence from photo-darkening. However, as the power of the RFLs increases, heat generation emerges as a critical constraint on further power scaling. This escalating thermal load might result in transverse mode instability (TMI), thereby posing a significant challenge to the development of RFLs. In this work, a static model of the TMI effect in a high-power Raman fiber amplifier based on stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering is established considering higher-order mode excitation. The variations of TMI threshold power with different seed power levels, fundamental mode purities, higher-order mode losses, and fiber lengths are investigated, while a TMI threshold formula with fundamental mode pumping is derived. This work will enrich the theoretical model of TMI and extend its application scope in TMI mitigation strategies, providing guidance for understanding and suppressing TMI in the RFLs.

Abstract:A comprehensive method is proposed to investigate gain narrowing and the gain saturation effect in a fiber chirped pulse amplification system. It can solve the comprehensive gain effect in time and spectral domains simultaneously based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Through numerical simulation under various pump powers, our simulation results benefit from good agreement in principle with the corresponding experimental results. Our model enjoys ameliorated accuracy and generalized compatibility compared to some conventional models, thus paving the way for further applications in chirped pulse amplifications.
