Abstract:In this paper, we carry out the equivalence problem for fifth-order differential operators on the line under general fiber-preserving transformation using the Cartan method of equivalence. Two versions of equivalence problems have been solved. We consider the direct equivalence problem and an equivalence problem to determine the sufficient and necessary conditions on fifth-order differential operators such that there exists a fiber--preserving transformation mapping one to the other according to gauge equivalence.

Abstract:We study second order linear homogeneous differential equations a(x)y'' + b(x)y' + c(x)y = 0 with analytic coefficients in a neighborhood of a regular singularity in the sense of Frobenius. These equations are model for a number of natural phenomena in sciences and applications in engineering. We address questions which can be divided in the following groups: (i) Regularity of solutions. (ii) Analytic classification of the differential equation. (iii) Formal and differentiable rigidity. (iv) Synthesis and uniqueness of ODEs with a prescribed solution. Our approach is inspired by elements from analytic theory of singularities and complex foliations, adapted to this framework. Our results also reinforce the connection between classical methods in second order analytic ODEs and (geometric) theory of singularities. Our results, though of a clear theoretical content, are important in justifying many procedures in the solution of such equations.

Abstract:The article introduces contact germs that transform solutions of some partial differential equations into solutions of other equations. Parametric symmetries of differential equations generalizing point and contact symmetries are defined. New transformations and symmetries may depend on derivatives of arbitrary but finite order. Abstract:Bagderina \cite{Bagderina2013} solved the equivalence problem for a family of scalar second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs), with cubic nonlinearity in the first-order derivative, via point transformations. However, the question is open for the general class $y''=f(x,y,y')$ which is not cubic in the first-order derivative. We utilize Lie's infinitesimal method to study the differential invariants of this general class under an arbitrary point equivalence transformations. All fifth order differential invariants and the invariant differentiation operators are determined. As an application, invariant description of all the canonical forms in the complex plane for second-order ODEs $y''=f(x,y,y')$ where both of the two Tress\'e relative invariants are non-zero is provided.

Abstract:In this paper we consider mappings of jet spaces that preserve the module of canonical Pfaffian forms, but are not generally invertible. These mappings are called contact. A lemma on the prolongation of contact mappings is proved. Conditions are found for which mappings transform solutions of some partial differential equations into ones of other equations. Examples of contact mappings of differential equations are given. We consider contact mappings depending on a parameter and give example of differential equation invariant under the maps.

Abstract:To a system of second-order ordinary differential equations one can assign a canonical nonlinear connection that describes the geometry of the system. In this paper, we develop a geometric setting that also allows us to assign a canonical nonlinear connection to a system of higher-order ordinary differential equations (HODE). For this nonlinear connection we develop its geometry, and explicitly compute all curvature components of the corresponding Jacobi endomorphism. Using these curvature components we derive a Jacobi equation that describes the behavior of nearby geodesics to a HODE. We motivate the applicability of this nonlinear connection using examples from the equivalence problem, the inverse problem of the calculus of variations, and biharmonicity. For example, using components of the Jacobi endomorphism we express two Wuenschmann-type invariants that appear in the study of scalar third- or fourth-order ordinary differential equations.

On Some Local Geometry of Bi-Contact Structures

Abstract:We investigate the local geometry of a pair of independent contact structures on 3-manifolds under maps that independently preserve each contact structure. We discover that such maps are homotheties on the contact 1-forms and we discover differential invariants associated to such structures under these equivalences. This allows us to generalize the notion of contact circles and (equilateral) hyperbolas to contact ellipses and hyperbolas. Moreover, these invariants may sometimes be used to define a complete local normal form and in at least one case are related to symplectic structures through a natural $e$-structure on a bundle arising from the Cartan equivalence method. Finally, there is a type of natural Riemannian metric (but not necessarily the well-known associated contact metric) and we discover certain curvatures may be written in terms of the bi-contact differential invariants.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the reduction process of a contact Lagrangian system whose Lagrangian is invariant under a group of symmetries. We give explicit coordinate expressions of the resulting reduced differential equations, the so-called Lagrange-Poincare-Herglotz equations. Our framework relied on the associated Herglotz vector field and its projected vector field, and the use of well-chosen quasi-velocities. Some examples are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the uses of Obata's differential equation in relation to the Ricci curvature of an odd-dimensional sphere that possesses a semi-symmetric metric connection. Specifically, we establish that, given certain conditions, the underlying submanifold can be identified as an isometric sphere. Additionally, we investigate the impact of specific differential equations on these submanifolds and demonstrate that, when certain geometric conditions are met, the base submanifold can be characterized as a special type of warped product.

Abstract:This paper focuses on a one-dimensional fourth-order nonlinear dispersive partial differential equation for curve flows on a Kähler manifold. The equation arises as a fourth-order extension of the one-dimensional Schrödinger flow equation, with physical and geometrical backgrounds. First, this paper presents a framework that can transform the equation into a system of fourth-order nonlinear dispersive partial differential-integral equations for complex-valued functions. This is achieved by developing the so-called generalized Hasimoto transformation, which enables us to handle general higher-dimensional compact Kähler manifolds. Second, this paper demonstrates the computations to obtain the explicit expression of the derived system for three examples of the compact Kähler manifolds, dealing with the complex Grassmannian as an example in detail.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the relationship between dynamical symmetries, Cartan symmetries, and dynamical similarities in contact mechanics. Using an alternative decomposition of vector fields, we provide a characterization of those symmetries and a new description in terms of tensor densities. Additionally, we show that, in certain cases, this construction enables the recovery of integrals of motion.

Abstract:We perform a Noether analysis for a description of translation transformations in 4D κ-Minkowski noncommutative space–time which is based on the structure of a 5D differential calculus. The techniques that had been previously developed for a description of translation transformations based on a 4D differential calculus turn out to be applicable without any modification, and they allow us to show that the basis usually adopted for the 5D calculus does not take into account certain aspects of the structure of time translations in κ-Minkowski. We propose a change of basis for the 5D calculus which leads to a more intuitive description of time translations.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to establish a completely new partial regularity theory on certain homogeneous complex Monge-Ampere equations. Our partial regularity theory will be obtained by studying foliations by holomorphic curves and and their relations to homogeneous complex Monge-Ampere equations. As applications, we will prove the uniqueness of extremal K\"ahler metrics and give an necessary condition for existence of extremal K\"ahler metrics.
