Abstract:We consider linear differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) of the form and the Kronecker canonical form (KCF) [L. Kronecker, Sitzungsberichte der Königlich Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin , 1890, pp. 1225--1237] of the corresponding matrix pencils . We also consider linear control systems and their Morse canonical form (MCF) [A. Morse, SIAM J. Control , 11 (1973), pp. 446--465; B. P. Molinari, Internat. J. Control , 28 (1978), pp. 493--510]. For a linear DAE, a procedure called explicitation is proposed, which attaches to any linear DAE a linear control system defined up to a coordinates change, a feedback transformation, and an output injection. Then we compare subspaces associated to a DAE in a geometric way with those associated (also in a geometric way) to a control system, namely, we compare the Wong sequences of DAEs and invariant subspaces of control systems. We prove that the KCF of linear DAEs and the MCF of control systems have a perfect correspondence and that their invariants are related. In this way, we connect the geometric analysis of linear DAEs with the classical geometric linear control theory. Finally, we propose a concept called internal equivalence for DAEs and discuss its relation with internal regularity, i.e., the existence and uniqueness of solutions.

Abstract:For nonlinear differential-algebraic equations (DAEs), we define two kinds of equivalences, namely, the external and internal equivalence. Roughly speaking, the word "external" means that we consider a DAE (locally) everywhere and "internal" means that we consider the DAE on its (locally) maximal invariant submanifold (i.e., where its solutions exist) only. First, we revise the geometric reduction method in DAEs solution theory and formulate an implementable algorithm to realize that method. Then a procedure named explicitation with driving variables is proposed to connect nonlinear DAEs with nonlinear control systems and we show that the driving variables of an explicitation system can be reduced under some involutivity conditions. Finally, due to the explicitation, we will use some notions from nonlinear control theory to derive two nonlinear generalizations of the Weierstrass form.

Abstract:New approaches are proposed in the problem of constructing equivalent scalar differential equations for multidimensional nonlinear systems of control theory, as well as in the problem of constructing equivalent Hamiltonian systems for nonlinear Lurie equations (scalar differential equations containing derivatives of only even orders). The conditions for the solvability of the corresponding problems are studied, and new formulas for the transition to equivalent equations and systems are proposed. For the Lurie equations, the proposed approaches are based on the transition from the linear part to the normal forms of the corresponding Hamiltonian systems with a subsequent transformation of the resulting system. Calculation formulas and algorithms are obtained, and their efficiency is illustrated by examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the need to solve chaotic solutions of high-dimensional nonlinear dynamic systems of which the analytic solution is difficult to obtain. For this purpose, a Differential Control Method (DCM) is proposed based on the Mechanized Mathematics-Wu Elimination Method (WEM). By sampling, the computer time of the differential operator of the nonlinear differential equation can be substituted by the differential quotient of solving the variable time of the sample. The main emphasis of DCM is placed on substituting the differential quotient of a small neighborhood of the sample time of the computer system for the differential operator of the equations studied. The approximate analytical chaotic solutions of the nonlinear differential equations governing the high-dimensional dynamic system can be obtained by the method proposed. In order to increase the computational efficiency of the method proposed, a thermodynamics modeling method is used to decouple the variable and reduce the dimension of the system studied. The validity of the method proposed for obtaining approximate analytical chaotic solutions of the nonlinear differential equations is illustrated by the example of a turbo-generator system. This work is applied to solving a type of nonlinear system of which the dynamic behaviors can be described by nonlinear differential equations.

Abstract:The paper deals with systems of ordinary differential equations containing in the right-hand side controls which are discontinuous in phase variables. These controls cause the occurrence of sliding modes. If one uses one of the well-known definitions of the solution of discontinuous systems, then the motion of an object while being on some surface can be described in terms of differential inclusions. With the help of the previously developed apparatus for solving differential inclusions, a method is constructed for finding the trajectories of a system moving in a such a mode. Since some of frequently used discontinuous controls contain nonsmooth functions of phase variables, the paper pays special attention to study the differential properties of such systems. At the end of the paper controls of a slightly different, in contrast to the classical, type are considered which have useful differential properties, and a method is constructed for solving systems with such controls considered both before hitting the required surface and moving in its vicinity.

The main results concerning these structures are stated and discussed, as well as their influence on the study of the differential equations with which they are related. Abstract:The theory and method of feedback linearization technique of controlling differential algebraic system are first presented. Some new definitions of M derivative, M bracket and etc. to differential algebraic systems are given, which is similar to the definitions and theorems in classical differential geometry theory. A series of new result to differential algebraic system control is given, which extends further the applied scope of nonlinear control system geometry theory. Because many power systems are modeled by differential algebraic model, and the loads of power systems are frequently the nonlinear expression of voltage and frequency. In addition, there are many problem of optimal control in practical engineering, these control problem above can be solved by using the M derivative, M bracket and so on. The designs of nonlinear excitation control of power systems with nonlinear loads can be applied by the feedback linearization technique of controlling differential algebraic systems, which make the differential geometry methods get more extensive application in the study of power system control.

Abstract:Partial differential equations (PDEs) are at the heart of many mathematical and scientific advances. While great progress has been made on the theory of PDEs of standard types during the last eight decades, the analysis of nonlinear PDEs of mixed type is still in its infancy. The aim of this expository paper is to show, through several longstanding fundamental problems in fluid mechanics, differential geometry, and other areas, that many nonlinear PDEs arising in these areas are no longer of standard types, but lie at the boundaries of the classification of PDEs or, indeed, go beyond the classification to be of mixed type. Some interrelated connections, historical perspectives, recent developments, and current trends in the analysis of nonlinear PDEs of mixed type are also presented.

Abstract:When ${\cal{D}}:\xi \rightarrow \eta$ is a linear OD or PD operator, a "direct problem" is to find compatibility conditions (CC) as an operator ${\cal{D}}_1:\eta \rightarrow \zeta$ such that ${\cal{D}}\xi=\eta$ implies ${\cal{D}}_1\eta=0$. When ${\cal{D}}$ is involutive, the procedure provides successive first order involutive operators ${\cal{D}}_1, ... , {\cal{D}}_n$ in dimension $n$. Conversely, when ${\cal{D}}_1$ is given, a much more difficult " inverse problem " is to look for an operator ${\cal{D}}: \xi \rightarrow \eta$ having the generating CC ${\cal{D}}_1\eta=0$. This is possible when the differential module defined by ${\cal{D}}_1$ is " {\it torsion-free} ", one shall say that ${\cal{D}}_1$ is parametrized by ${\cal{D}}$. The systematic use of the adjoint of a differential operator provides a constructive test. A control system is controllable {\it if and only if} it can be parametrized. Accordingly, the controllability of any OD or PD control system is a " {\it built in} " property not depending on the choice of the input and output variables among the system variables. In the OD case when ${\cal{D}}_1$ is formally surjective, controllability just amounts to the injectivity of $ad({\cal{D}}_1)$. Among applications, the parametrization of the Cauchy stress operator has attracted many famous scientists from G.B. Airy in 1863 for $n=2$ to A. Einstein in 1915 for $n=4$. We prove that all these works are already explicitly using the self-adjoint Einstein operator {\it which cannot be parametrized} and are based on a confusion between the $div$ operator induced from the Bianchi operator ${\cal{D}}_2$ and the Cauchy operator, adjoint of the Killing operator ${\cal{D}}$ for an arbitrary $n$. This purely mathematical result deeply questions the origin and existence of gravitational waves.

Abstract:Since the publication of my lecture notes, Functional Differential Equations in the Applied Mathematical Sciences series, many new developments have occurred. As a consequence, it was decided not to make a few corrections and additions for a second edition of those notes, but to present a more compre hensive theory. The present work attempts to consolidate those elements of the theory which have stabilized and also to include recent directions of research. The following chapters were not discussed in my original notes. Chapter 1 is an elementary presentation of linear differential difference equations with constant coefficients of retarded and neutral type. Chapter 4 develops the recent theory of dissipative systems. Chapter 9 is a new chapter on perturbed systems. Chapter 11 is a new presentation incorporating recent results on the existence of periodic solutions of autonomous equations. Chapter 12 is devoted entirely to neutral equations. Chapter 13 gives an introduction to the global and generic theory. There is also an appendix on the location of the zeros of characteristic polynomials. The remainder of the material has been completely revised and updated with the most significant changes occurring in Chapter 3 on the properties of solutions, Chapter 5 on stability, and Chapter lOon behavior near a periodic orbit.

Abstract:This monograph introduces the theory of generalized homogeneous systems governed by differential equations in both Euclidean (finite-dimensional) and Banach/Hilbert (infinite-dimensional) spaces. It develops methods of stability and robustness analysis, control design, state estimation and discretization of homogeneous control systems. Generalized Homogeneity in Systems and Control is structured in two parts. Part I discusses various models of control systems and related tools for their analysis, including Lyapunov functions. Part II deals with the analysis and design of homogeneous control systems. Some of the key features of the text include: mathematical models of dynamical systems in finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces; the theory of linear dilations in Banach spaces; homogeneous control and estimation; simple methods for an "upgrade" of existing linear control laws; numerical schemes for a consistent digital implementation of homogeneous algorithms; and experiments confirming an improvement of PID controllers. Analysis of PDEs

Abstract:Some of recent developments, including recent results, ideas, techniques, and approaches, in the study of degenerate partial differential equations are surveyed and analyzed. Several examples of nonlinear degenerate, even mixed, partial differential equations, are presented, which arise naturally in some longstanding, fundamental problems in fluid mechanics and differential geometry. The solution to these fundamental problems greatly requires a deep understanding of nonlinear degenerate partial differential equations. Our emphasis is on exploring and/or developing unified mathematical approaches, as well as new ideas and techniques. The potential approaches we have identified and/or developed through these examples include kinetic approaches, free boundary approaches, weak convergence approaches, and related nonlinear ideas and techniques. We remark that most of the important problems for nonlinear degenerate partial differential equations are truly challenging and still widely open, which require further new ideas, techniques, and approaches, and deserve our special attention and further efforts.
