Abstract:Abstract The use of recycled water is an essential means of resolving urban water scarcity. To realize the coordinated allocation of conventional and recycled water, a multi-objective water resources optimal allocation model with recycled water is established. The model takes into account the impact of the carbon footprint on the regional ecology during the total water allocation process, which has not been given enough attention before. Simultaneously, this study combined direct policy search, nonlinear approximation networks and multi-objective evolutionary algorithms to design Pareto approximation operating policies for joint conventional and recycled water allocation. The AHP-Entropy method based on combinatorial assignment of weights is then used to perform multi-attribute decision making on the optimized operating policies for scientific selection of solutions. The proposed model is demonstrated in Yiwu City, China, which suffers from the water shortage due to the rapid development of industry. Results show that radial basis functions can effectively design Pareto approximation operating policies for the water supply system of Yiwu City. The inclusion of recycled water can result in a 31.67% reduction in water shortage and an 8.45% increase in economic benefit, while carbon emissions only increase by 1.78%. This result illustrates the use of recycled water can alleviate urban water scarcity, increase economic benefits, and mitigate carbon emissions to some extent. Multi-attribute decision making based on the AHP-Entropy method provides a scientific basis for optimalurban multi-water allocation.

Abstract:A general optimization model is proposed for the simultaneous optimization of integrated water allocation and heat exchanger networks (WAHEN). An improved superstructure and mathematical model for the WAHEN problem is presented. Complementary formulations are applied to model the discrete decisions, and a mathematical model with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) is formulated. Both the MINLP model and the MPEC model are developed and solved for the problem. The effectiveness of the proposed model is illustrated with two case studies. A comparison between the results obtained by the proposed model and those obtained from the model in the literature is carried out. Case studies show that the proposed simultaneous methodology performs well and is efficient.

Abstract:The raw water supply was divided into abundant period and lacking period in many cities. Getting water from multi-resource and storing up the water in the reservoirs was a common method to ensure the enough freshwater in scanty state of cities,which also made the fetching and accumulating water complicated. The microcosmic math-model which including muti-resource of water and multi-reservoirs was Established and solved by genetic algorithms(GA),and least-cost of pumps and most stored water of reservoirs were took as the aim,then the optimal scheme and optimal stored process-line of reservoirs were obtained. The model was applied to raw water netwark of ZH city and a fairly good result was obtained.

Abstract:Optimal control of circulating water system is an important item in energy saving of power plant. As to the high power consumption of circulating water system, we establish a mathematical model of circulating water system , according to the data of a power plant , which depicts the difference between the generating capacity and power consumption, and obtain its optimal solution based on the method of constrained nonlinear programming. The simulation result shows that the method of constrained nonlinear programming can effectually get the optimal solution. It makes pumps more effectual and saves the power consumption.

Abstract:Based on the Shiyanghe River Basin,a multi-source,multi-user and multi-objective water resources optimal allocation model is established.The benefit of living,agriculture and ecological environment will be converted into commensurable benefit on the basis of industrial water benefit,then the multi-objective problem will be transformed into a single-objective one based on method of index weight.11 non-inferior solutions have been screened from 36 optimal solutions,finally the equilibrium solution is obtained by approximate aspiration dot arrangement method,that is,optimal allocation of limited surface water,ground water and diversion water in four major departments: industries,living,agricultural and the ecological environment.The example is presented to verify the feasibility and availability of the approximate aspiration dot arrangement method.

Abstract:Water scarcity is a global issue that is rapidly worsening. Many researchers have explored various approaches to promote sustainable uses of water, with Greywater (GW) recycling and utilization of innovative plumbing fixtures being among the methods presented to reduce freshwater consumption for domestic usage. Nonetheless, previous studies have dealt with both means independently, without studying the integrated effect of utilizing both GW recycling and innovative plumbing fixtures together both on the quality of supplied water, as well as on the cost of the integrated system. Accordingly, this research aims at improving the efficiency of water usage in residential buildings through the development of a mathematical optimization model that utilizes a constructed database in order to select the most appropriate GW recycling system, plumbing fixtures and system components with the aim of improving the water quality, minimizing the water usage and reducing the cost. The developed model is divided into three main modules: input, water flow and annual worth quantification. The model was verified on a case study, and sensitivity analysis was performed to explore the impact of changing major input factors on the total annual cost. A factorial design examining both two- and three-factor interactions was used. The number of residents and the annual increase in water tariffs factors had the most significant impact on the total annual worth, accounting for 55% and 43.7% of the total variability, respectively. Furthermore, the model was validated by comparing its results with a previous study conducted in the United Kingdom, where the developed model presented a significant reduction of the lifecycle cost of the decentralized water system in residential buildings and attained freshwater savings of 58.17%.

Abstract:In this study, a conjunctive water management model based on interval stochastic bi-level programming method (CM-ISBP) is proposed for planning water trading program as well as quantifying mutual effects of water trading and systematic water saving. CM-ISBP incorporates water resources assessment with soil and water assessment tool (SWAT), systematic water-saving simulation combined with water trading, and interval stochastic bi-level programming (ISBP) within a general framework. Systematic water saving involves irrigation water-saving technologies (sprinkler irrigation, micro-irrigation, low-pressure pipe irrigation), enterprise water-saving potential and water-saving subsidy. The CM-ISBP is applied to a real case of a water-scarce watershed (i.e. Dagu River watershed, China). Mutual effects of water trading and water-saving activities are simulated with model establishment and quantified through mechanism analysis. The fate of saved water under the systematic water saving is also revealed. The coexistence of the two systems would increase system benefits by [11.89, 12.19]%, and increase the water use efficiency by [40.04, 40.46]%. Thus mechanism that couples water trading and water saving is optimal and recommended according to system performance.

Abstract:Based on the principle of nonlinear multi-objective programming,a model for optimal allocation of regional water resources with multi-sources and multi-consumers was developed.A new nonlinear integrated objective function was introduced in the model,which synthetically takes economic benefit,cost of water usage and water resource's equilibrium distribution into account.With the restriction of water demand and supply,the objective function optimal value was calculated by sequential quadratic programming.The model was applied to water resource allocation in Cixi City,and the optimal schemes for the distribution of high quality water resources under three assurance rates of water supply in three plan years were obtained.The results indicate that the schemes can increase obviously the economic benefit and provide a scientific decision for future water allocation. This model can flexibly set parameters and is available for the allocation of water resource in regions with short supply of water.

Abstract:In this paper, the classical WPI model is optimized by using principal component analysis, and a PCA based evaluation model is proposed. When the model is applied to the water resources data of Beijing area, the experiments have shown that the evaluation efficiency of WPI is significantly improved. And when used to evaluate WPI in different city and countryside, the optimized model has also achieved satisfying results. On this basis, this paper puts forward a prediction model for future water environment, which has predicted future water resource in the Shan-gan-ning district and also puts forward a set of intervention programs based on related analysis. The date shows that the model is effective in alleviate the water shortage.

Abstract:During a certain water distribution process in irrigated areas, the water resource allocation model can generate the distribution scheme of different water users in different regions to obtain the different water distributions of the canals that supply water to the water users. Based on the amount of water distribution, the canal optimization water distribution model was established, and indicators such as water allocation duration and leakage loss were obtained. Leakage loss affects the net water allocation of users and then affects the water fee income and equity of the water resource allocation model. Therefore, the water resource allocation model and canal optimization water distribution model are mutually influenced. The coupled model should be considered while modelling the process of water distribution to obtain more reasonable water resource allocation results. The coupled model comprehensively considers the objectives of water fee income, equity, leakage loss and water distribution duration, and the results can help irrigation area managers obtain a more practical water distribution scheme. The applicability and practicability of the method were verified by applying the model to the limited water resource allocation scenario in the BoJiLi Yellow River irrigation area. The results showed that the coupled model provides a promising way of optimizing the water distribution scheme, i.e., less water leakage losses, more total water allocation guarantees, less total water shortages, and more irrigated water from the reservoir (upstream) to farmland (downstream), thus promoting fairness and increasing the water fee income.

Abstract:The deficiency of water resources is limiting directly and severely the social-economic development and ecological environment protection in many regions, and has been exacerbated by rapid industrial growth and national and state agriculture production objectives. Recent national, provincial and local water reform efforts are also focusing on economic efficiency in water allocation. Mathematical modeling in advance is the requirement for scientific decision-making. Water allocation may have different objectives and bases, but in market economy and on the condition of national investment, we should mainly pursue the maximization of economic objectives, except the basic water guarantee for living, ecology and assuring basic production water use. The amount of allocated water is a multi-dimensional variable and can be optimized in many contexts due to differences in the definition of industrial structure, the technical level of production among different areas and the marginal revenues of water resources. Therefore, the problem of water allocation comes down to solving problems of spatial optimization. This paper presents an equating marginal revenue theory for spatial allocation of water resources: when the marginal revenues of water in all area have the same value, the economic benefit from water for all the intake areas reaches its maximum. When the local available water resources and the marginal revenue of water for all sub-areas are given, for different total water supply from outside, we may calculate the optimized dynamic allocation scheme, the sequence of water allocation starting and the economic benefit from the water allocation for different sub-areas, as well as the integrated maximum economic benefit from water utilization. The example of the six southern districts in Hebei province of China illustrates the feasibility of the theory and models.

Abstract:The dyeing industry discharges large amount of wastewater and can only be treated at the end of the process.To make fundamental improvements,vessels partition and orders classification models were simulated and optimized using an optimization algorithm,based on features of the intermittent production system in the dyeing industry.On the basis of optimal operation,a batch-scheduling model was developed to split and combine orders.In the application of the model,60％ of the orders was rescheduled and the amount of washing water was reduced by 54.06％,through the optimization of three aspects in the production process:vats partition,order splitting and combining,and order sequencing by color.Moreover,the application of the model could save 5.81 ～9.29 million cubic meters of water,and 8.13 ～ 15.67 million yuan in production cost annually.
Simulation-optimization Method for Crop Irrigation Scheduling with Limited Water Supplies

Abstract:Optimal irrigation scheduling with limited water supplies can increase crop yield and water use efficiency. A simulation-optimization model was developed for crop irrigation scheduling with the irrigation date as the decision variable. The model was based on a simulation model of the soil water balance and the crop water-production function, and was optimized using the simplex evolutionary method. The model was used to optimize the irrigation scheduling for winter wheat after greening in Beijing with the 1999 meteorology history. The simulation results show that both field evapotranspiration and crop yield increase with the irrigation quota, but with decreasing slopes. Irrigation in the early heading stage is the most efficient, with irrigation in the shooting stage also recommended for larger irrigation quotas.

Abstract:According to theory of agent based social simulation, an evaluation model of the water use mechanism of urban households was established. From the technical economic and social sides, the water use behavior mechanism was investigated. Based on the statistical and survey data of Beijing, the parameter distinguishing and the test of the model was carried out by utilizing uncertainty analysis. The main structure of urban household water usage was in the process changing from water tap and washing machine towards shower bath and toilet washing. The water tap and washing machine could use smaller investment to obtain improvement of water use efficiency of larger range; the enhancement of water price could produce restraining action on tap water demand and also stimulate the demand of reused water. People adopted irrational principle when purchasing water conservation devices under the condition of water price in Beijing at present, only about 40% consumers would like to adopt reused water.

Abstract:The actual operating modes of water supply systems cannot be characterized in sufficient detail and accurately by several values obtained during calculations using traditional deterministic methods and models. Nevertheless, the task of obtaining comprehensive information about the modes of operation of water supply systems can be solved using simulation modeling, which allows detailed analysis of the variability of water consumption over time. At the same time, the most important components of this process, which should be taken into account when modeling, are the intensity, duration and frequency of water consumption. This article discusses the mathematical description of the variability of the duration and frequency of water consumption by the most common types of water collection devices (kitchen sink and bathtub faucets / shower cubicle, toilet bowl with flush tank, washing machine and dishwasher) using water from the water supply system of a residential building. The aim of the work is to evaluate and substantiate the theoretical laws of the distribution of the duration of water consumption by the most common types of water collection devices, as well as the frequency (probability) of their use during the most characteristic period of water consumption (day). The paper presents the results of a study of the duration and frequency of water consumption by the most common types of water collection devices. The analysis of histograms and graphs based on the obtained statistical data, as well as estimates of the main numerical characteristics, is presented. The evaluation and substantiation of the theoretical laws of the distribution of duration and frequency (probability) of water consumption has been carried out. As a result of the performed research, a variant of the mathematical description of the nature of variability in the duration of periods of continuous water consumption by the most common types of water collection devices, as well as the frequency (probability) of their use during the day, is proposed.

Abstract:For decades, water shortage, flooding, and water deterioration problems have led to a variety of adverse impacts on socioeconomic development and human life.Challenges of water quality and quantity management adhering to the principle of sustainable development have been of significant concerns to many researchers and decision makers [1][2][3][4][5][6].These issues are highly complicated, involving a large number of social, economic, environmental, technical, and political factors, coupled with complex spatial variability and cascading effect [7,8].Climate change and human interference could affect the related management systems at a regional scale and lead to more significant spatial and temporal variations of water quantity and availability as well as the associated environmental and ecological conditions.Such complexities force researchers to develop more robust mathematical methods and tools to analyze the relevant information, simulate the related processes, implement mitigation strategies, assess the potential impacts/risks, and generate sound decision alternatives.Therefore, it is desired that mathematical techniques be developed to aid decision makers in formulating and adopting cost-effective and environment-benign water management plans and policies.The paper "River flow estimation from upstream flow records using support vector machines" by H. Abstract:A general concern when considering the implementation of domestic grey water recycling is to understand the impacts of system factors on water saving efficiency. Key factors include household occupancy, storage volumes, treatment capacity and operating mode. Earlier investigations of the impacts of these key factors were based on a one-tank system only. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effect of these factors on the performance of a more realistic 'two tank' system with treatment using an object based household water cycle model. A Monte-Carlo simulation technique was adopted to generate domestic water appliance usage data which allows long-term prediction of the system's performance to be made. Model results reveal the constraints of treatment capacity, storage tank sizes and operating mode on percentage of potable water saved. A treatment capacity threshold has been discovered at which water saving efficiency is maximised for a given pair of grey and treated grey water tank. Results from the analysis suggest that the previous one-tank model significantly underestimates the tank volumes required for a given target water saving efficiency.

Abstract:To promote the harmonious development of human and water resources, the scarcity and ecological value of water resources should be considered in water resource allocation. In this paper, synergetic theory was applied to the process of water resource allocation, and we constructed a synergetic theory-based water resource allocation model by investigating the synergetic principle of each link of water resource allocation. The objective equation was established for determining the optimal comprehensive benefit of the composite system. Multidimensional constraint conditions were constructed from the perspective of the social benefit, economic benefit and ecological benefit of water supply, and balance equations were established. Order parameters were selected for the social, economic and ecological subsystems, and the order degrees of the three subsystems and the synergetic degrees of allocation schemes were calculated by using the fuzzy mathematics method to provide a basis for the recommendation of an optimal scheme. Finally, we proposed a multicycle iterative algorithm to realize the overall objective of "harmonious development between humans and water resources", which provides an effective calculation tool for water resource synergetic allocation. This model was applied in Jilin, and an optimal scheme was recommended on the basis of a synergetic degree analysis, which shows that the water supply of conventional water sources will be saved by an increase in the reclaimed water supply. In addition, after the implementation of an external diversion project by 2030, the amount of groundwater withdrawal will be gradually reduced, and the water deficit rate will be significantly reduced.
