Abstract:In this paper,the characteristics of microwave drying sweet potato were studied.The single-factor experiments were designed to study the effects of different loading quantity,power and thickness of the slice on water content rate,dehydration rate in drying sweet potato.The laws of dehydrating and power consumption were obtained.The mathematical model of microwave drying sweet potato slice was obtained.The experimental results were analyzed by the DPS software,showing the fitting equation with good statistical test results.

Abstract:A series of microwave drying rests on potato have been conducted,the dehydrating characteristics and power consumption characteristics were obtained. It was indicated that the regression model of microwave drying on potato slices accord with the equation of Page.And the objective functions and the better drying programs under various indexes are obtained. Through the combination optimization analysis on the three factors respectively,we find when the former-power and latter-power both reach 3.2W/g,the objective functions are optimized.In this paper,the influences of the three factors on the indexes are briefly analyzed.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To understand the drying properties of Radix Paeoniae Rubra extract with microwave vacuum drying technique and to establish a suitable kinetics model to describe its drying characteristics. METHODS: The effects of various processing conditions, such as microwave power and sample load, on the changes of the moisture content, temperature and the dehydrating rate of Radix Paeoniae Rubra extract were analyzed. The drying curve was drawn. The mathematic model of microwave vacuum drying was established. RESULTS: The drying process could be roughly divided into accelerate period, constant rate period and falling rate period. The drying process of Radix Paeoniae Rubra extract could be accurately described by the Page model, the predicted values of the model were nearly consistent with the observed values. CONCLUSION: The moisture contents and dehydrating rate during the drying procedure can be exactly estimated by the model.

Abstract:In this paper,microwave drying equipments and the application of microwave drying technology in Chinese medicine were introduced.Advantages of microwave drying in the preparation of Chinese medicine extracts and products were also summarized.Advantages of microwave drying include fast drying,high energy utilization,uniform drying effect,effective sterilization,and easy automatic control.Meanwhile,three suggestions were proposed to solve the application problems,which include the study of drying processes mechanism,development of online testing technology and evaluation improvement of microwave drying methods.

Abstract:Little detailed information is available on the microwave drying characteristics of potato and the use of different microwave powers to dry food products. Experiments were conducted to study the microwave drying characteristics and the dried quality of potato. The study focuses on describing the microwave drying characteristics of potato and discussing the effect of sample thickness, drying power and mass. The results show that if the power level increases, the mass load decreases and the thickness of the sample decreases, the dehydration rate increases and the drying energy consumption decreases. There are two falling rate periods during microwave drying of potato: the first falling rate period is for a moisture content of more then 1.1 (dry basis, DB); the second falling rate period is for a moisture content of less than 1.1 (DB). The same water loss will consume more energy when the moisture content is less than 1.1 (DB). A two-stage drying process was employed during microwave drying of potato. The microwave power of the first drying stage differed form that of the second drying stage. The moisture content of the breakpoint for the conversion of the first drying stage into the second drying stage is a moisture content of 1.1 (DB). A quadratic orthogonal regression experiment was conducted, and the effects of slice thickness, the first drying load power and the second drying load power on sensory quality, the rehydration ratio and the energy consumption rate were established. The slice thickness, the first drying load power and the second drying load power linearly affected the three indices. The effect of the product of the second drying load power and the potato slice thickness on the rehydration ratio and the energy consumption rate is significant. The optimum drying parameter combination for the three indices was obtained. The rehydration ratio of the dried products decreased with an increase of the second drying load power and the slice thickness. The concave curves of the sensory quality versus the three factors were shown.

Abstract:Microwave drying is based on a unique volumetric heating mode facilitated by electromagnetic radiation at 915 or 2,450 MHz. The responses of a lossy food product to dielectric heating result in rapid energy coupling into the moisture and lead to fast heating and drying. A significant reduction in drying time in microwave drying is often accompanied by an improvement in product quality, making it a promising food dehydration technology. The need for improvement in engineering design and process optimization for microwave drying has stimulated the development of computer simulation techniques to predict temperature and moisture history and distribution in the product to be dried. In this article, we present the basics of dielectric heating and drying, examine the heat and mass transfer models developed for the simulation of microwave drying processes, and discuss dielectric properties of selected food products as influenced by moisture, temperature, and porosity. In addition, we analyze nonuniform heating caused by the geometry and composition of the product, as well as by the nonuniform distribution of electromagnetic field in a microwave cavity, followed by a discussion on how to improve the microwave heating uniformity. We focus the discussion on heat and mass transfer models developed over the years to simulate microwave drying, including simplified ones, those based on diffusion theory, and coupled heat and mass transfer analysis with the Philip and de Vries theory, Luikov scheme, Whitaker method, and two-region model. In the end, the determination of the heat source term in the energy equation, numerical schemes used to solve the partial differential equations, and the model validation are also discussed.

Abstract:A 3D mathematical food model of Coupled Hot-air and Microwave (CTMW) heating was developed to understand complex microwave interactions in food. The heating process at different position of potato using CTMW heating was investigated numerically and experimentally. Simulated spatial temperature profiles were compared with experimental ones, and predict spatial temperature profiles were in good agreement with experimental ones. In this study, the effect of the potato's position inside cavity was studied. The simulation results were analyzed and evaluated. The results showed the loss power values& density distribution at different position of potato varied greatly, which directly led to the potatoes in the uneven distribution of temperature field. The results are useful in understanding complex microwave heating, designing CTMW heating systems.

Abstract:The thin-layer drying characteristics of Ximeng lignite (XL) were investigated under microwave irradiation, and mathematical modeling using thin-layer drying models from literature was performed. The effects of coal particle size and microwave power level on drying characteristics were studied. The drying rate increased and drying time decreased with increasing particle size or microwave power level. The drying rate and drying rate to moisture ratio curves, which contained a constant rate period at lower microwave output powers, exhibited fast heating and falling rate periods at different coal-particle sizes and microwave output power levels. Among the 14 thin-layer drying models proposed, the Midilli–Kucuk model provided a better fit for all applied drying conditions and could be used to estimate moisture in XL at any time during the microwave-drying process after running a multiple regression analysis. The drying rate constants and apparent diffusion coefficients (determined from the Midilli–Kucuk model and Fick's second law, respectively) increased with increasing particle size or microwave power level. The activation energy estimated from a modified Arrhenius equation was Ea=77.0485W/g. The equilibrium moisture of XL decreased with increasing microwave output power or decreasing particle size.

Abstract:<p>Microwave drying is attracting increasing attention due to its energy efficiency. A self-developed pilot-scale microwave dryer was used in this study to dry two different common types of sewage sludge, namely mechanically dewatered sewage sludge and composting dewatered sewage sludge, by using two heating modes: constant temperature and constant power modes. The microwave drying behavior, specific energy consumption, average drying rate, energy efficiency, and drying effect were explored considering the influences of microwave output power, initial mass, and heating mode. Results showed that the output power had the largest influence on specific energy consumption, energy efficiency, and drying efficiency, followed by the constant temperature and initial mass. The specific energy consumption of mechanically dewatered sewage sludge decreased by roughly 14%. By contrast, the average drying rate increased by approximately 6%, and the energy efficiency increased by approximately 20% for each 1 kW increase in output power. Meanwhile, composting dewatered sewage sludge displayed drying effects at an output power of 3 kW, and the temperature exceeded 80 °C. The comparison of the two modes suggested that the constant temperature mode was better than the constant power mode considering product quality and operational safety. Compared with six thin-layer drying mathematical models, the Midilli–Kucuk model could provide a good fit for the constant temperature mode. The proposed microwave drying process exhibited effective performance in drying rate. This process also demonstrated considerable application potential for sewage sludge drying.</p>

Abstract:In order to obtain the microwave vacuum drying characteristics of rice and the change in law of temperature and humidity, the mechanism of water diffusion and migration in the drying process was analyzed based on the multiphase flow in porous media, the change model of moisture content was established, and the microwave heating process coupled with electromagnetic field and mass heat field was simulated. The accuracy of the multiphase porous medium model was verified by measuring the moisture changes during rice drying under different vacuum degrees. The results show that the temperature distribution of rice during heating is high in the center and low around, and the vacuum degree hardly affects the change in rice temperature. The capillary pressure in rice gradually increases, and the equilibrium vapor pressure gradually decreases during drying. The estimated moisture content reduced from 0.25 to 0.189, 0.177, and 0.169, and the experimental value decreased from 0.25 to 0.186, 0.177, and 0.167 after drying the rice for 60 min at vacuum of 0.02 MPa, 0.04 MPa, and 0.06 MPa, respectively. The experimental value was in agreement with the calculated value. The higher the vacuum degree, the faster the drying speed, and this finding provided a new idea for improving the drying efficiency.

Abstract:The study focuses on describing the microwave drying characteristics of kidney beans and discussing the effect of drying power and initial mass on drying quality. When the power level increased, the dehydration rate increased while the drying energy consumption and the initial mass decreased. There were two falling rate periods during drying of kidney beans. The quadratic orthogonal regression experiment was conducted, and models of effect of first-stage drying load-power, second-stage drying load-power and first-stage drying time on sensory quality, rehydration ratio and energy consumption rate (three indices) were established. First-stage drying load-power, second-stage drying load-power and first-stage drying time affected the three indices. For the three indices, the drying factor combination is different. First-stage drying load-power is slightly lower for high sensory quality. Second-stage drying load-power should be lower for high sensory quality and higher for low energy consumption rate. First-stage drying timeshould be long for high sensory quality and moderate for low energy consumption rate and high rehydration ratio. To obtain better results for the three indices, the first-stage power should differ from the second-stage power in drying factor combination. This implies that the alternative microwave power drying on kidney beans should be used.

Abstract:In order to gain a deeper knowledge of the heat and mass transfer processes in the case of starchy fruits and vegetables during microwave drying, we have conducted an experimental study based on a developed microwave apparatus for drying potato. The changes in the temperature, drying rate, moisture content, thermal parameters, moisture state and distribution of the potatoes samples during the microwave drying process were obtained. The results show that, according to the temperature changes of the samples dried at different microwave powers (600 W, 800 W, 1000 W), the microwave drying process can be divided into three stages: heating stage, constant temperature stage, and cooling stage. The moisture content reduction of the samples in the constant temperature stage accounted for more than 90% of the total reduction. Meanwhile, as the microwave drying process goes by, the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the samples both decrease first and then increase, while the volumetric heat capacity presents an opposite trend. Moreover, the range and amplitude of transverse relaxation time of the samples reduce over the drying time, which confirms the existence of massive, outward moisture-migration in the dried samples. The loss of the weakly bound water in the moisture-migration, which is closely related to the starch, has a significant effect on the heat and mass transfer in the dried samples.

Abstract:The process of drying thin-layer radish strips under two drying conditions was analyzed and a predictive model was set up according to the mass and heat balance principles in drying.The corresponding experiment showed that the measured values were very close to the predicted values.The predictive result indicates that the drying speed of material first increases,then decreases and lastly the moisture content of material tends to equilibrium in drying,which accords with the law of drying.So it is feasible to forecast the process of drying thin-layer radish strips by the predictive model.

Abstract:Numerical simulations were carried out for moist, porous media, intermittent microwave convective drying (IMCD) using a multiphase flow model in porous media subdomains coupled with a forced-convection heat-transfer model in an external hot air subdomain. The models were solved by using COMSOL Multiphysics was applied at the pulse ratio (PR) of 3. Based on drying characteristics of porous media and the distribution of the evaporation interface, IMCD was compared with convection drying (CD). Drying uniformity K, velocity difference, temperature difference, and humidity difference were introduced to evaluate the performance of three models with different inlets and outlet wall curvature. The numerical results show that as the moisture content of slices was reduced to 3 kg/kg, the drying rate in IMCD was 0.0166–0.02 m/s higher than that in CD, and the total drying time of the former was 81.35% shorter than that of the latter. In the late drying stage of IMCD, the core of the sample still had a high vapor concentration and temperature, which led to the evaporation interface remaining on the surface. The vapor evaporated from the slices can diffuse rapidly to the outside, which is why IMCD is superior to traditional convection drying. Through the comprehensive analysis of the models with different inlet and outlet wall curvatures, the drying uniformity K of the type III was the highest, reaching 89.28%. Optimizing flow-field distribution can improve uniform of airflow distribution.

Abstract:Microwave was employed to improve the slurryability of lignite with high external and inherent moisture.The maximum solid concentration was 51.65% for the irradiated lignite slurry(700 W for 10 min),comparing to 45.67% for the initial lignite slurry.Among the six different thin layer drying mathematical models,Page model was found the most appropriate model to describe the drying process of lignite.The dehydration energy consumption decreased with the increasing of microwave power.Moreover,bigger reactor and more samples resulted in lower energy consumption,comparing with the smaller reactor and fewer samples.Moisture was reabsorbed to the level of the dry air base for lignite irradiated by microwave when placed in air for a period.The negative effect of secondary bibulous was significantly inhibited by microwave.

Abstract:Microwave-vacuum drying performance and energy consumption of Camellia oleifera seeds were studied in this paper. The effects of microwave power, vacuum pressure and loading quantity were evaluated and discussed. Orthogonal experiments were also conducted to optimize the drying process. A new drying model based on the weibull distribution model was developed. Results showed that the microwave-vacuum drying process was dominated by internal water diffusion and surface water evaporation. As the microwave power and vacuum pressure increased and the loading quantity decreased, the drying time and energy consumption both decreased. However, too low or too high microwave power would increase the energy consumption. The optimal microwave-vacuum drying conditions were found to be a loading quantity of 150 g, a microwave power of 350 W and a vacuum pressure of 0.09 MPa. The developed drying model and the calculated scale and shape parameter were all consistent with experimental results.

Abstract:Abstract The thin-layer drying performance for a typical solid waste (paper towel) was evaluated at hot air temperatures of 90–130 °C (0.5 m/s air velocity) and microwave powers of 200–800 W in a bench-scale microwave combined convective drying setup. Influences of hot air and radiation modes (multi-magnetron and mode stirrer) on the temperature distribution uniformity were examined. The effective moisture diffusivities of sample during pure hot air drying ranged from 6.07 × 10−9 to 1.31 × 10−8 m2/s, while those for pure microwave drying were from 3.54 × 10−8 to 1.52 × 10−7 m2/s. The apparent activation energy of sample in pure hot air drying was estimated as 23.17 kJ/mol, while that for pure microwave drying was 22.64 W/g. The effective moisture diffusivities of sample in combined drying ranged from 5.71 × 10−8 to 2.05 × 10−7 m2/s. The heating uniformity for microwave was improved effectively by the combined drying. The application of the mode stirrers and multi-magnetron radiation modes further improved the microwave heating uniformity. Midilli model can well describe moisture content of paper towel over time.

Abstract:In this paper, on the base of non-equilibrium thermodynamic theory and phase equilibrium principle, a mass-transfer mathematical model and a heat-transfer mathematical model for convective drying of porous me-dia was established. In this model, the coupled heat and mass transfer was considered enough. Software was designed for the simulation of porous production slice during drying process in Visual Basic. The mass-transfer for potato slice was simulated by the software, and the simulated results were compared with experimental data. The results indicated that simulation values agree with experiment data. The simulation result of the moisture distributing internal potato slice during drying process was according with the humidity transfer rule. The simulation method was feasible.

Abstract:This study investigates the effectiveness of microwave-assisted hot air drying (MAHD) on corn drying process, water migration, dielectric properties, microstructure, and quality attributes. The research compares MAHD with conventional hot air drying (HAD), employing various microwave powers (1.2-3.6 kW) and hot air temperatures (35-55 °C). The results demonstrate that MAHD significantly reduces the drying time (by 30.95-64.29%) compared to HAD. Two-term model accurately describes the drying kinetics of corn. Microwave facilitated the transformation and more uniform distribution of water within the corn, observed through LF-NMR/MRI. Additionally, MAHD was effective in preserving the color and carotenoids, while reducing fat acidity, indicating better quality retention. Microstructure analysis revealed that MAHD increases microporosity and cracks in corn, which correlates with the observed enhancement in drying efficiency. These findings underscore the potential of MAHD as a superior method for drying corn, offering benefits in terms of reduced drying time and improved quality preservation.
