Abstract:In this paper, we first give a lower bound of the lifespan and some estimates of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for general quasi-linear hyperbolic systems, whose characteristic fields are not weakly linearly degenerate and the inhomogeneous terms satisfy Kong's matching condition. After that, we investigate the lifespan of the classical solution to the Cauchy problem and give a sharp limit formula. In this paper, we only require that the initial data are sufficiently small in the $L^1$ sense and the BV sense.

Abstract:The author considers the life-span of classical solutions to Cauchy problem for general first order quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems in two independent variables with "slow" decay initial data. By constructing an example, first it is illustrated that the classical solution to this kind of Cauchy problem may blow up in a finite time, even if the system is weakly linearly degenerate. Then some lower bounds of the life-span of classical solutions are given in the casethat the system is weakly linearly degenerate. These estimates imply that, when the system is weakly linearly degenerate, the classical solution exists almost globally in time. Finally, it is proved that Theorems 1.1-1.3 in [2] are still valid for this kind of initial data.

We first present some estimates on solutions of linear wave equations in several space variables. Abstract:In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for a class of complex conservation laws, which is introduced by P.D. Lax and essentially a class of quasilinear hyperbolic systems in two space dimensions. For a kind of flux functions, we prove the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem with small initial data. On the other hand, for different kinds of flux functions, we give some estimates on the lower bound of the life span of smooth solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish several new Lyapunov-type inequalities for two classes of one-dimensional quasilinear elliptic systems of resonant type, which generalize or improve all related existing ones. Then we use the Lyapunov-type inequalities obtained in this paper to derive a better lower bound for the generalized eigenvalues of the one-dimensional quasilinear elliptic system with the Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we first consider the Cauchy problem for quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems with weak linear degeneracy. The existence of global classical solutions for small and decay initial data was established in (Commun. Partial Differential Equations 1994; 19:1263-1317; Nonlinear Anal. 1997; 28:1299-1322; Chin. Ann. Math. 2004; 25B:37-56). We give a new, very simple proof of this result and also give a sharp point-wise decay estimate of the solution. Then, we consider the mixed initial-boundary-value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions in the first quadrant. Under the assumption that the positive eigenvalues are weakly linearly degenerate, the global existence of classical solution with small and decay initial and boundary data was established in (Discrete Continuous Dynamical Systems 2005; 12(1):59-78; Zhou and Yang, in press). Abstract:We study the initial-boundary value problem of quasilinear wave equations outside of a star-shaped obstacle in four space dimensions, in which the nonlinear term under consideration may explicitly depend on the unknown function itself. By some new $L^{\infty}_{t}L^{2}_{x}$ and weighted $L^{2}_{t,x}$ estimates for the unknown function itself, together with energy estimates and KSS estimates, for the quasilinear obstacle problem we obtain a lower bound of the lifespan $T_{\varepsilon}\geq \exp{(\frac{c}{\varepsilon^2})}$, which coincides with the sharp lower bound of lifespan estimate for the corresponding Cauchy problem.

Abstract:It is proven that if the leftmost eigenvalue is weakly linearly degenerate, then the Cauchy problem for a class of nonhomogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems with small and decaying initial data given on a semi-bounded axis admits a unique global C1 solution on the domain {(t,x)|t⩾0,x⩾xn(t)}, where x=xn(t) is the fastest forward characteristic emanating from the origin. As an application of our result, we prove the existence of global classical, C1 solutions of the flow equations of a model class of fluids with viscosity induced by fading memory with small smooth initial data given on a semi-bounded axis.

Abstract:By assuming certain local energy estimates on (1+3)-dimensional asymptotically flat space-time, we study the existence portion of the Strauss type wave system. Firstly we give a kind of space-time estimates which are related to the local energy norm that appeared in [13]. These estimates can be used to prove a series of weighted Strichartz and KSS type estimates, for wave equations on asymptotically flat space-time. Then we apply the space-time estimates to obtain the lower bound of the lifespan when the nonlinear exponents p and q >= 2. In particular, our bound for the subcritical case is sharp in general and we extend the known region of (p, q) to admit global solutions. In addition, the initial data are not required to be compactly supported, when p, q > 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the initial boundary value problem for a class of higher-order nonlinear pseudo-parabolic equations with a memory term. First, the blow-up results of the solution when the initial energy is negative or positive are obtained by using concavity analysis, and an upper bound on the blow-up time $ T^* $ is given. Second, a lower bound on the blow-up time $ T^* $ is obtained by applying differential inequalities when the solutions blow up.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to proving the sharpness on the lower bound of the lifespan of classical solutions to general nonlinear wave equations with small initial data in the case n = 2 and cubic nonlinearity (see the results of T. T. Li and Y. M. Chen in 1992). For this purpose, the authors consider the following Cauchy problem: {□ u = ( u_t )^3 , n = 2, t = 0: u = 0, u_t = ε g( x ), x ∈ℝ^2 , . where □ = ∂ _t^2 - ∑_i = 1^n ∂ _x_i ^2 is the wave operator, g ( x ) ≢ 0 is a smooth non-negative function on ℝ 2 with compact support, and ɛ > 0 is a small parameter. It is shown that the solution blows up in a finite time, and the lifespan T ( ɛ ) of solutions has an upper bound T ( ɛ ) ≤ exp( Aɛ −2 ) with a positive constant A independent of ɛ , which belongs to the same kind of the lower bound of the lifespan.
