Investigation on the influence of strength and density of jacket materials on the penetration performance of jacketed rods

Abstract:In this article, a ballistic experiment, numerical and theoretical investigation are conducted on a 60 mm-thick C45 steel target by homogeneous 93 W and four types of jacket materials (Q235 steel, 30CrMnSi steel, 2024-T4Al, and HMn55-3-1Cu). Results show that the jacketed rods produced typical "co-erosion" damage with velocities of 1000–2600 m/s, except for the 93 W/2024-T4 Al jacketed rod, which experienced a transition from early "bi-erosion" damage to late "co-erosion" erosion patterns. In addition, the jacketed structure provides radial and circumferential constraints for the composite structure rods and improved penetration performance of these rods. The average diameter of the crater has decreased by about 8% compared with the homogeneous 93 W rod. And the average penetration depths of jacketed composite structure rods made of 30CrMnSi, Q235, 2024-T4Al, and HMn55-3-1Cu increased by 7.6%, 9.28%, 0.2%, and 7.1%, respectively, compared with the penetration depth of the homogeneous 93 W rod. For the velocity of 1000–2600 m/s, the density and strength of the jacket material all affect the penetration performance of jacketed rods. But when the penetration velocity increases, the influence of strength gradually diminishes. However, the jacket's density remains a major factor influencing the penetration performance of jacketed rods. Finally, an existing theoretical prediction model of the penetration depth of jacketed rods on targets is modified. The results indicate that the improved theoretical model is good in terms of penetration depth consistent with experimental and numerical results.
