Abstract:This study uses numerical methods (ANSYS-Fluent) to investigate the viscous fingering of the displaced phase as a shear-thinning fluid in the classic three-dimensional Hele-Shaw cell. Comparing the behavior of fingerings with different properties on the upper and lower surfaces of a three-dimensional model, it was found that when the upper and lower surfaces are walls, under the combined action of moving contact lines and Saffman-Taylor instability, fingering splitting occurs at the tip, resulting in the appearance of two fingers at the interface. In addition, we have found that interfacial tension has a suppressive effect on short waves. As the interfacial tension increases, the velocity at the advancing tip decreases. Therefore, when the interface tension is 0, viscous fingering displacement reaches the farthest distance. We have also conducted research on the viscous fingering at different temperatures. The results indicate that increasing the temperature leads to a decrease in the viscosity of the displaced phase, making the flow more stable. As the temperature rises, the pressure gradient inside the flow path increases, pushing the viscous fingering further.

Abstract:A volume tracking method was developed to simulate time-dependent unstable viscous fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell. The effect of finite viscosity ratio μr between displacing and displaced fluids and their interfacial tension σ on finger morphology is investigated. It is shown that there exist four distinct finger patterns, depending upon the viscosity ratio, μr, and Ca′, the modified capillary number for constant flow rate, or ΔPs ̇W/σ, for constant driving pressure difference. Morphology diagrams are developed to identify the ranges of the dimensionless parameters corresponding to the various finger patterns. The simulation results are validated with experiments.
The enhancement of viscous fingering with bidisperse particle suspension

Abstract:Viscous fingering is observed experimentally when a bidisperse suspension displaces air inside a Hele-Shaw cell, despite the stabilising viscosity ratio between the invading (suspension) and defending (air) phases. Careful experiments are carried out to characterise this instability by either systematically varying the large-particle concentrations $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{l0}$ at constant total concentrations $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{0}$ , or changing $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{0}$ with fixed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{l0}$ . Leading to the instability, we observe that larger particles consistently enrich the fluid–fluid interface at a faster rate than small particles. This size-dependent enrichment of the interface leads to an earlier onset of the fingering instability for bidisperse suspensions, compared to their monodisperse counterpart of all small particles. In particular, even the small presence of large particles is shown to effectively lower the total particle concentration needed for fingering, compared to the all-small-particle case. We hypothesise that the key mechanism behind this enhanced viscous fingering is the size-dependent nature of shear-induced migration of particles far upstream from the interface. A reduced equilibrium model is derived based on the modified suspension balance model to verify this hypothesis, in reasonable agreement with experiments.

Three-dimensional fingering structures in immiscible flow at the crossover from viscous to capillary fingering

Abstract:Fluid displacement experiments were performed with immiscible fluids in a packed bed of glass spheres. The three-dimensional (3D) structure of the fingering pattern was visualized by computer tomography (CT) for a range of capillary numbers (Ca) between 5.22 × 10−7 and 1.04 × 10−4 at the viscosity ratio of log M = −2.203 in the absence of the influence of buoyancy force. Based on the 3D CT images, the characteristics of the fingering pattern at the crossover from viscous fingering (VF) to capillary fingering (CF) were investigated quantitatively. The structure of the fingering pattern changed gradually from streak-like for VF to more compact for CF with a decrease in Ca. Associated with the crossover from VF to CF, saturation of the invading phase (IP) and the fractal number of the structure both increased. The invaded pore size and invaded throat size distributions were also estimated for all values of Ca. The invaded pore size distribution was similar for all Ca values, but a clear shift in the throat size distribution was observed with the crossover from VF to CF.

Abstract:The effect of heterogeneity induced by highly permeable fracture networks on viscous miscible fingering in porous media is examined using high-resolution numerical simulations. We consider the planar injection of a less viscous fluid into a two-dimensional fractured porous medium that is saturated with a more viscous fluid. This problem contains two sets of fundamentally different preferential flow regimes; the first is caused by the viscous fingering, and the second is due to the permeability contrasts between the fractures and the rock matrix. We study the transition from the regime where the flow is dominated by the viscous instabilities, to the regime where the heterogeneity induced by the fractures define the flow paths. Our findings reveal that even minor permeability differences between the rock matrix and fractures significantly influence the behavior of viscous fingering. The interplay between the viscosity contrast and permeability contrast leads to the preferential channeling of the less viscous fluid through the fractures. Consequently, this channeling process stabilizes the displacement front within the rock matrix, ultimately suppressing the occurrence of viscous fingering, particularly for higher permeability contrasts. We explore three fracture geometries: two structured and one random configuration and identify a complex interaction between these geometries and the development of unstable flow. While we find that the most important factor determining the effect of the fracture network is the ratio of fluid volume flowing through the fractures and the rock matrix, the exact point for the cross-over regime is dependent on the geometry of the fracture network.

Abstract:Virtual material is a dynamic model of mechanical contact surface, which is suitable for finite element simulation. This method can characterize the stiffness and damping of the contact surface well by using fractal geometry theory to describe the contour of the contact surface. Based on standard W-M function, we verify the accuracy of the fractal dimension calculated by wavelet transform, and then fit the fractal dimension of machined surfaces with different roughness. Using the fractal dimension, we calculate the virtual material parameters to establish the finite element model of the unit specimen. Finally, we carry out the experimental modal analysis to examine reproduce the virtual material method.

Abstract:Fracture processes are ubiquitous in soft materials, even in complex fluids, subjected to stresses. To investigate these processes in a simple geometry, we use a model self-assembled transient gel and study the instability patterns obtained in a radial Hele-Shaw cell when a low viscosity oil pushes the more viscous transient gel. Thanks to an analysis of the morphology of the patterns, we find a discontinuous transition between the standard Saffman-Taylor fingering instability and a fracturing instability as the oil injection rate increases. Our data suggest that the flow properties of the gel ahead of the finger tip controls the transition towards fracturing. By analyzing the displacement field of the gel in the vicinity of the fingers and cracks, we show that in the fingering regime, the oil gently pushes the gel, whereas in the fracturing regime, the crack tears apart the gel, resulting in a strong drop of the gel velocity ahead of the crack tip as compared to the tip velocity. We find a unique behavior for the whole displacement field of a gel around a crack, which is drastically different from that around a finger, and reveals the solid-like behavior of the gel at short time. Our experiments and analysis provide quantitative yet simple tools to unambiguously discriminate a finger from a crack in a visco-elastic material.

Abstract:Humans rely on their fingers to sense and interact with external environment. Understanding the tribological behavior between finger skin and object surface is crucial for various fields, including tactile perception, product appearance design, and electronic skin research. Quantitatively describing finger frictional behavior is always challenging, given the complex structure of the finger. In this study, the texture and sliding direction dependence of finger skin friction was quantified based on explicit mathematic models. The proposed double-layer model of finger skin effectively described the nonlinear elastic response of skin and predicted the scaling-law of effective elastic modulus with contact radius. Additionally, the skin friction model on textured surface considering adhesion and deformation factors was established. It revealed that adhesive term dominated finger friction behavior in daily life, and suggested that object texture size mainly influenced friction-induced vibrations rather than the average friction force. Combined with digital image correlation (DIC) technique, the effect of sliding direction on finger friction was analyzed. It was found that the anisotropy in finger friction was governed by the finger’s ratchet pawl structure, which also contributes to enhanced stick-slip vibrations in the distal sliding direction. The proposed friction models can offer valuable insights into the underlying mechanism of skin friction under various operating conditions, and can provide quantitative guidance for effectively encoding friction into haptics.

Abstract:The displacement of two-phase fluids within porous media is a critical process in various engineering and industrial fields. However, the inherent instability of the fluid interface often leads to an irregular morphology of the displacement front, which can impact the efficiency of displacement and limit its application in engineering activities. In this study, the color gradient model based on the lattice Boltzmann method was employed to simulate displacement, with the aim of investigating the dynamic evolution of the displacement front under the combined effects of wettability and injection velocity, specifically during the capillary to viscous fingering transition. The results demonstrate that the impact of wettability on the displacement front morphology increases as the injection velocity decreases. The displacement process with the maximum fingering distribution range and compact morphology is found at the midpoint of the capillary-viscous fingering crossover zone. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of the phase field evolution and pressure difference changes between the inlet and outlet unveiled the pore-filling mechanisms associated with the unique variation characteristics of the displacement front and the fluid topological structure. These comprehensive pore-scale findings offer theoretical insight supporting the engineering application of the two-phase flow in porous media from multiple perspectives.

Gravity-driven fingering simulations for a thin liquid film flowing down the outside of a vertical cylinder

Abstract:A numerical study is presented to examine the fingering instability of a gravity-driven thin liquid film flowing down the outer wall of a vertical cylinder. The lubrication approximation is employed to derive an evolution equation for the height of the film, which is dependent on a single parameter, the dimensionless cylinder radius. This equation is identified as a special case of that which describes thin film flow down an inclined plane. Fully three-dimensional simulations of the film depict a fingering pattern at the advancing contact line. We find the number of fingers observed in our simulations to be in excellent agreement with experimental observations and a linear stability analysis reported recently by Smolka and SeGall [Phys. Fluids 23, 092103 (2011)]. As the radius of the cylinder decreases, the modes of perturbation have an increased growth rate, thus increasing cylinder curvature partially acts to encourage the contact line instability. In direct competition with this behavior, a decrease in cylinder radius means that fewer fingers are able to form around the circumference of the cylinder. Indeed, for a sufficiently small radius, a transition is observed, at which point the contact line is stable to transverse perturbations of all wave numbers. In this regime, free surface instabilities lead to the development of wave patterns in the axial direction, and the flow features become perfectly analogous to the two-dimensional flow of a thin film down an inverted plane as studied by Lin and Kondic [Phys. Fluids 22, 052105 (2010)]. Finally, we simulate the flow of a single drop down the outside of the cylinder. Our results show that for drops with low volume, the cylinder curvature has the effect of increasing drop speed and hence promoting the phenomenon of pearling. In contrast, drops with much larger volume evolve to form single long rivulets with a similar shape to a finger formed in the aforementioned simulations.

Abstract:SummaryThe truncation error associated with different numerical schemes (first order finite volume, second order finite difference, control volume finite element) and meshes (fixed Cartesian, fixed structured triangular, fixed unstructured triangular and dynamically adapting unstructured triangular) is quantified in terms of apparent longitudinal and transverse diffusivity in tracer displacements and in terms of the early time growth rate of immiscible viscous fingers. The change in apparent numerical longitudinal diffusivity with element size agrees well with the predictions of Taylor series analysis of truncation error but the apparent, numerical transverse diffusivity is much lower than the longitudinal diffusivity in all cases. Truncation error reduces the growth rate of immiscible viscous fingers for wavenumbers greater than 1 in all cases but does not affect the growth rate of higher wavenumber fingers as much as would be seen if capillary pressure were present. The dynamically adapting mesh in the control volume finite element model gave similar levels of truncation error to much more computationally intensive fine resolution fixed meshes, confirming that these approaches have the potential to significantly reduce the computational effort required to model viscous fingering.

Abstract:Viscous fingering is an extensively observed phenomenon in porous media or Hele-Shaw cells. In general, this instability is particularly difficult to control for given fluids and geometries. Therefore, investigating a control method of viscous fingering is quite attractive. Here, we present that electro-visco-fingering (EVF) in fluids with different relative permittivity shows a controllable performance under electric fields. The theoretical model is established from the perspective of force analysis to indicate that active control of EVF is achieved by the competition between the Maxwell stress jump and hydrostatic pressure gradient. In addition, an Electric Control number (E<sub>C</sub>) is adopted to characterize the electric effect on EVF and experimentally confirmed for broad ranges of flow rates and voltages. Unlike the electro-osmotic flow, this method shows a considerable achievement in energy efficiency. Our work provides a new way to actively control viscous fingering and opens new routes for applications of interfacial instabilities.

Crossover from viscous fingering to fracturing in cohesive wet granular media: a photoporomechanics study

Abstract:We study fluid-induced deformation and fracture of cohesive granular media, and apply photoporomechanics to uncover the underpinning grain-scale mechanics. We fabricate photoelastic spherical particles of diameter d=2mm, and make a monolayer granular pack with tunable intergranular cohesion in a circular Hele-Shaw cell that is initially filled with viscous silicone oil. We inject water into the oil-filled photoelastic granular pack, varying the injection flow rate, defending-fluid viscosity, and intergranular cohesion. We find two different modes of fluid invasion: viscous fingering, and fracturing with leak-off of the injection fluid. We directly visualize the evolving effective stress field through the particles' photoelastic response, and discover a hoop effective stress region behind the water invasion front, where we observe tensile force chains in the circumferential direction. Outside the invasion front, we observe compressive force chains aligning in the radial direction. We conceptualize the system's behavior by means of a two-phase poroelastic continuum model. The model captures granular pack dilation and compaction with the boundary delineated by the invasion front, which explains the observed distinct alignments of the force chains. Finally, we rationalize the crossover from viscous fingering to fracturing by comparing the competing forces behind the process: viscous force from fluid injection that drives fractures, and intergranular cohesion and friction that resist fractures.

Abstract:<p>Based on the anisotropic fractal characteristics of natural fracture surfaces, a fractal fluid flow model was developed. Three-dimensional printed fracture models were built using the morphological information of an actual tensile and shear fracture surface of a rock. The impacts of the fractal dimension on the fluid flow characteristics were investigated. The results demonstrated that the concentration distribution of the undulating height of tensile fracture was larger than that of shear fracture. The fractal dimension of fracture lines with different directional sections ranges from 1.01 to 1.03, which results in the fluid flow anisotropy of fracture surfaces. As predicted by the theoretical model, the fluid flows along the tensile fracture surface and the shear fracture surface in different directions are 0.7–1.2 times and 0.9–1.1 times the average flow rates, respectively. With increasing pressure head, the Reynolds number linearly increased, and the Euler number first rapidly decreased and then slowly decreased.</p>

Abstract:Viscous fingering of a miscible high viscosity slice of fluid displaced by a lower viscosity fluid is studied in porous media by direct numerical simulations of Darcy's law coupled to the evolution equation for the concentration of a solute controlling the viscosity of miscible solutions. In contrast with fingering between two semi-infinite regions, fingering of finite slices is a transient phenomenon due to the decrease in time of the viscosity ratio across the interface induced by fingering and dispersion processes. We show that fingering contributes transiently to the broadening of the peak in time by increasing its variance. A quantitative analysis of the asymptotic contribution of fingering to this variance is conducted as a function of the four relevant parameters of the problem i.e. the log-mobility ratio R, the length of the slice l, the Peclet number Pe and the ratio between transverse and axial dispersion coefficients $\epsilon$. Relevance of the results is discussed in relation with transport of viscous samples in chromatographic columns and propagation of contaminants in porous media.

Abstract:Viscous fingering in porous media occurs when the ( miscible or immiscible ) displacing fluid has a lower viscosity than the displaced fluid. For example, immiscible fingering is observed in experiments where water displaces a much more viscous oil. Modelling the observed fingering patterns in immiscible viscous fingering has proven to be very challenging, which has often been identified as being due to numerical issues. However, in a recent paper (Sorbie et al. in Transp. Porous Media 133:331–359, 2020) suggested that the modelling issues are more closely related to the physics and formulation of the problem. They proposed an approach based on the fractional flow curve, , as the principal input, and then derived relative permeabilities which give the maximum total mobility. Sorbie et al were then able to produce complex, well-resolves immiscible finger patterns using elementary numerical methods. In this paper, this new approach to modelling immiscible viscous fingering is tested by performing direct numerical simulations of previously published experimental water/oil displacements in 2D sandstone porous media. Experiments were modelled at adverse viscosity ratios ( ), with oil viscosities ranging from μ o = 412 to 7000 cP, i.e. for a viscosity ratio range, ( ) 400–7000. These experiments have extensive production data as well as in situ 2D immiscible fingering images, measured by X-ray scanning. In all cases, very good quantitative agreement between experiment and modelling results is found, providing a strong validation of the new modelling approach. The underlying parameters used in the modelling of these unstable immiscible floods, the functions, show very consistent and understandable variation with the viscosity ratio, ( ).
