Abstract:The variation of the classical viscous fingering instability is studied numerically in this work. An investigation of the viscous fingering phenomenon of immiscible displacement in the Hele–Shaw cell (HSC), where the displaced fluid is a shear-thinning fluid, was carried out numerically using the volume of fluid (VOF) method by adding a minor depth gradient or altering the geometry of the top plate in the HSC. The findings demonstrate how the presence of depth gradients can change the stability of the interface and offer a chance to regulate and adapt the fingering instability in response to the viscous fingering properties of air driving non-Newtonian fluids under various depth gradients. The relative breadth will shrink under the influence of the depth gradient, and the negative consequences of the gradient will be increasingly noticeable. Specifically, under different power-law indices, we found that with the enhancement of shear-thinning characteristics (lower power-law exponent n) in both positive and negative depth gradients, the fingers that protrude from the viscous fingers become shorter and thicker, resulting in higher displacement efficiency. Additionally, several modifications were performed to the upper plate's design, and the findings revealed that the shape had no effect on the viscous fingering and only had an impact on the longitudinal amplitude. Based on the aforementioned traits, we may alter the HSC's form or depth gradient to provide high-quality and effective work.

Abstract:A volume tracking method was developed to simulate time-dependent unstable viscous fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell. The effect of finite viscosity ratio μr between displacing and displaced fluids and their interfacial tension σ on finger morphology is investigated. It is shown that there exist four distinct finger patterns, depending upon the viscosity ratio, μr, and Ca′, the modified capillary number for constant flow rate, or ΔPs ̇W/σ, for constant driving pressure difference. Morphology diagrams are developed to identify the ranges of the dimensionless parameters corresponding to the various finger patterns. The simulation results are validated with experiments.

Abstract:A firm understanding and control of viscous fingering (VF) and miscible displacement will be vital to a wide range of industrial, environmental, and pharmaceutical applications, such as geological carbon-dioxide sequestration, enhanced oil recovery, and drug delivery. We restrict our study to VF, a well-known hydrodynamic instability, in miscible fluid systems but consider double-diffusive (DD) effects---the combined effect of compositional changes because of solute transport and temperature. One often uses numerical formulations to study VF with DD effects. The primary aim of the current study is to show that popular formulations have limitations to study VF with DD effect. These limitations include exhibiting node-to-node spurious oscillations, violating physical constraints such as the non-negativity of the concentration field or mathematical principles such as the maximum principle, and suppressing physical instabilities. We will use several popular stabilized finite element formulations---the SUPG formulations and three modifications based on the SOLD approach---in our study. Using representative numerical results, we will illustrate two critical limitations. First, we document that these formulations do not respect the non-negative constraint and the maximum principle for the concentration field. We will also show the impact of these violations on how viscous fingers develop. Second, we show that these stabilized formulations, often used to suppress numerical instabilities, may also suppress physical instabilities, such as viscous fingering. Our study will be valuable to practitioners who use existing numerical formulations and to computational mathematicians who develop new formulations.

Abstract:Miscible viscous fingering occurs when a less viscous fluid displaces a more viscous one in porous media or a Hele–Shaw cell. Such flow instabilities are of particular interest in a variety of applications in flows and displacements in subsurface energy and environment systems. In this study, we investigate the miscible viscous fingering dynamics experimentally using water to displace glycerol in a sealed Hele–Shaw cell with two wells located in it instead of at the boundary or corners. We comprehensively examine the spatial and temporal variations of fingering dynamics, different flow regimes, and how they are affected by the water injection rate and control of pressure or rate at the outlet. Alongside the widely recognized diffusion-dominated and convection-dominated flow regimes, we identify three new regimes: a slow expansion regime prior to breakthrough, a rapid shrinkage regime immediately after breakthrough, and a uniform, slow expansion regime without fingering instability. Each regime is characterized by interesting flow dynamics, which has not been reported previously. The duration of each regime depends on the water injection rate and whether constant pressure or a constant production rate is applied at the outlet. The variations of swept area, interfacial length, and count of fingers are also quantitatively examined. This study provides new insights into the fundamental mechanisms for miscible fluid displacements in a variety of applications such as CO2 sequestration, hydrogen storage, enhanced oil recovery, and groundwater contaminate remediation.

Abstract:The displacement of two-phase fluids within porous media is a critical process in various engineering and industrial fields. However, the inherent instability of the fluid interface often leads to an irregular morphology of the displacement front, which can impact the efficiency of displacement and limit its application in engineering activities. In this study, the color gradient model based on the lattice Boltzmann method was employed to simulate displacement, with the aim of investigating the dynamic evolution of the displacement front under the combined effects of wettability and injection velocity, specifically during the capillary to viscous fingering transition. The results demonstrate that the impact of wettability on the displacement front morphology increases as the injection velocity decreases. The displacement process with the maximum fingering distribution range and compact morphology is found at the midpoint of the capillary-viscous fingering crossover zone. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of the phase field evolution and pressure difference changes between the inlet and outlet unveiled the pore-filling mechanisms associated with the unique variation characteristics of the displacement front and the fluid topological structure. These comprehensive pore-scale findings offer theoretical insight supporting the engineering application of the two-phase flow in porous media from multiple perspectives.

Abstract:The coupled effects of thermodynamic and hydrodynamic instabilities are studied during viscous fingering (VF). We introduced a modified Cahn–Hilliard phase-field model in conjunction with the Korteweg force in the classical VF model and derived consistent governing equations. The free energy of the partially miscible system is described using a modified Flory–Huggins model, which allows us to investigate the temporal evolution of spatial inhomogeneities. The mass flux in the Cahn–Hilliard equations is modified according to modern diffusion theory. The governing equations have been solved through an in-house model implementation using the COMSOL multiphysics software. We successfully demonstrated the transition from the finger-like structures to the droplet formation during spinodal decomposition as demonstrated experimentally in the literature. Our results are also in agreement with earlier numerical results obtained using a classical Landau type mixing energy. We further systematically studied the effects of the Margules parameter (interaction parameter) and the gradient parameter, which is associated to the thermodynamic length scale and capillary number on the VF. Aysmmetric features of the binary mixture are also investigated showing a stronger thermodynamic effect on the system with increasing phase separation and, hence, droplet formation.

Abstract:Viscous fingering or Saffman–Taylor instability shows fingering interfacial patterns when a more mobile fluid displaces a less mobile one in porous media. The effective interfacial tension (EIT) is like capillary force, acting at the miscible interface on time scales shorter than interface relaxation. It has been numerically reported so far that the fingers are wider with EIT compared with those without EIT. A recent experiment observed finger widening with increasing flow rate in a miscible system with EIT, which is not observed in classical immiscible and miscible systems. In this study, we have numerically investigated the effect of (which corresponds to the injection flow rates in the experiment) on miscible viscous fingering with/without EIT. We have shown that the fingers are monotonically thinner with an increase in in the system without EIT, while finger widening with increasing is observed in the system with EIT. Furthermore, we have also examined a one-dimensional underlying concentration profile and EIT profile by using a one-dimensional diffusion–convection model because EIT is proportional to the squared concentration gradient. We have then shown that the concentration gradient is steeper and, thus, the EIT is larger as is larger. Therefore, this is the first numerical study that can theoretically verify finger widening with increasing flow rate, which occurs only in a miscible system with EIT to the extent of our targeting EIT values, and explain the mechanism by one-dimensional analysis.

Abstract:We perform three-dimensional numerical simulations to understand the role of viscous fingering in sweeping a high-viscous fluid (HVF). These fingers form due to the injection of a low-viscous fluid (LVF) into a porous media containing the high-viscous fluid. We find that the sweeping of HVF depends on different parameters such as the Reynolds number ($Re$) based on the inflow rate of the LVF, the Péclet number ($Pe$), and the logarithmic viscosity ratio of HVF and LVF, $\mathfrak{R}$. At high values of $Re$, $Pe$, and $\mathfrak{R}$, the fingers grow non-linearly, resulting in earlier tip splitting of the fingers and breakthrough, further leading to poor sweeping of the HVF. In contrast, the fingers evolve uniformly at low values of $Re$, $Pe$, and $\mathfrak{R}$, resulting in an efficient sweeping of the HVF. We also estimate the sweep efficiency and conclude that the parameters $Re$, $Pe$ and $\mathfrak{R}$ be chosen optimally to minimize the non-linear growth of the fingers to achieve an efficient sweeping of the HVF.

Abstract:In the petroleum engineering and chemical industries, fluids engaging in displacement often have non-Newtonian properties, even though many former studies assume constant viscosities in the defending fluid. In this study, the computational fluid dynamics approach was performed in a two-dimensional model with uniformly distributed disks. This arrangement helps reveal the phenomenon and mechanics of how non-Newtonian characteristics of defending fluid affect two-phase displacement in porous media. Both global (in the whole medium) and regional (in the pore throat) studies revealed that shear-thinning makes capillary force and the pressure in the invading fluid decisive and leads to a uniform pattern. Meanwhile, the shear-thickening causes fingering due to the pressure drop in the defending fluid that becomes decisive. Cases of increasing injection rates were investigated to verify their ability to improve efficiency. The results verified that increased injection rates are effective in shear-thinning cases but energy-intensive when it comes to costs in shear-thickening cases. Finally, the viscosity ratio and capillary number (M-Ca) diagram were extended by plotting non-Newtonian cases as lines to consider viscosity variation. An estimation method was presented, which calculates the characteristic viscosity and locates non-Newtonian cases on an M-Ca diagram. This work can serve as a reference for enhanced oil recovery method development and microfluidic manipulation.

Abstract:A phase-field model for the Hele-Shaw flow of non-Newtonian fluids is developed. It extends a previous model for Newtonian fluids to a wide range of shear-dependent fluids. The model is applied to perform simulations of viscous fingering in shear- thinning fluids, and it is found to be capable of describing the complete crossover from the Newtonian regime at low shear rate to the strongly shear-thinning regime at high shear rate. The width selection of a single steady-state finger is studied in detail for a 2-plateaux shear-thinning law (Carreau law) in both its weakly and strongly shear-thinning limits, and the results are related to previous analyses. In the strongly shear-thinning regime a rescaling is found for power-law (Ostwald-de-Waehle) fluids that allows for a direct comparison between simulations and experiments without any adjustable parameters, and good agreement is obtained.

The enhancement of viscous fingering with bidisperse particle suspension

Abstract:Viscous fingering is observed experimentally when a bidisperse suspension displaces air inside a Hele-Shaw cell, despite the stabilising viscosity ratio between the invading (suspension) and defending (air) phases. Careful experiments are carried out to characterise this instability by either systematically varying the large-particle concentrations $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{l0}$ at constant total concentrations $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{0}$ , or changing $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{0}$ with fixed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{l0}$ . Leading to the instability, we observe that larger particles consistently enrich the fluid–fluid interface at a faster rate than small particles. This size-dependent enrichment of the interface leads to an earlier onset of the fingering instability for bidisperse suspensions, compared to their monodisperse counterpart of all small particles. In particular, even the small presence of large particles is shown to effectively lower the total particle concentration needed for fingering, compared to the all-small-particle case. We hypothesise that the key mechanism behind this enhanced viscous fingering is the size-dependent nature of shear-induced migration of particles far upstream from the interface. A reduced equilibrium model is derived based on the modified suspension balance model to verify this hypothesis, in reasonable agreement with experiments.

Abstract:Viscous fingering (VF) is an interfacial instability that occurs in a narrow confinement or porous medium when a less-viscous fluid pushes a more viscous one, producing finger-like patterns. Controlling the VF instability is essential to enhance the efficiency of various technological applications. However, the control of VF instability has been challenging and so far focused on simple Newtonian fluids of constant viscosity. Here, we extend to complex yield-stress fluids and examine the controlling feasibility by carrying out a linear stability analysis using a radial cell with a converging gap gradient. We avoid making the major assumption of a small Bingham number, Bn << 1, i.e., a negligible ratio of the yield to shear stress, and instead provide a new stability criterion predicting apparent complex VF. This criterion depends on not only the complex fluid's rheology, interfacial tension, and contact angle to the wetting wall, but also the gap gradient, the radius, gap-thickness, and velocity at the fluid-fluid interface. Finally, we compare this theoretical criterion to our experimental data with nitrogen pushing a complex yield-stress fluid in a taper and find good agreement.

Abstract:Fluid displacement experiments were performed with immiscible fluids in a packed bed of glass spheres. The three-dimensional (3D) structure of the fingering pattern was visualized by computer tomography (CT) for a range of capillary numbers (Ca) between 5.22 × 10−7 and 1.04 × 10−4 at the viscosity ratio of log M = −2.203 in the absence of the influence of buoyancy force. Based on the 3D CT images, the characteristics of the fingering pattern at the crossover from viscous fingering (VF) to capillary fingering (CF) were investigated quantitatively. The structure of the fingering pattern changed gradually from streak-like for VF to more compact for CF with a decrease in Ca. Associated with the crossover from VF to CF, saturation of the invading phase (IP) and the fractal number of the structure both increased. The invaded pore size and invaded throat size distributions were also estimated for all values of Ca. The invaded pore size distribution was similar for all Ca values, but a clear shift in the throat size distribution was observed with the crossover from VF to CF.

Abstract:SummaryThe truncation error associated with different numerical schemes (first order finite volume, second order finite difference, control volume finite element) and meshes (fixed Cartesian, fixed structured triangular, fixed unstructured triangular and dynamically adapting unstructured triangular) is quantified in terms of apparent longitudinal and transverse diffusivity in tracer displacements and in terms of the early time growth rate of immiscible viscous fingers. The change in apparent numerical longitudinal diffusivity with element size agrees well with the predictions of Taylor series analysis of truncation error but the apparent, numerical transverse diffusivity is much lower than the longitudinal diffusivity in all cases. Truncation error reduces the growth rate of immiscible viscous fingers for wavenumbers greater than 1 in all cases but does not affect the growth rate of higher wavenumber fingers as much as would be seen if capillary pressure were present. The dynamically adapting mesh in the control volume finite element model gave similar levels of truncation error to much more computationally intensive fine resolution fixed meshes, confirming that these approaches have the potential to significantly reduce the computational effort required to model viscous fingering.

Abstract:In this study, we constructed the pore network model for simulation of non-Newtonian two-phase flow. The pore network is initially saturated with the Ellis non-Newtonian fluid and water is then injected with various capillary numbers to simulate water flooding. We observed that there is also a crossover from the capillary fingering to the viscous fingering. In the crossover, the invading fluid tends to fill large-radius pipes, forming a small number of flow paths and low invading fluid saturation. The results show that the stronger the shear-thinning of the Ellis fluid, the easier it is for the injected fluid to invade the smaller-radius pipe, thereby suppressing viscous fingering and increasing the displacement efficiency, resulting in a smaller crossover zone. The findings of this study can help for a better understanding of the complex fluid-fluid displacement patterns in porous media for improving geological CO2 sequestration and enhanced oil recovery.

Abstract:Suppressing the interfacial instability during fluid displacement, namely, viscous fingering, has been a long-lasting challenge in many applications. Numerous strategies have been proposed to control this phenomenon. Despite the recent advancements in utilizing electric fields to regulate viscous fingering, the absence of a rigorous characterization of this interfacial instability under an electric field hinders its further application. Therefore, in this work, we conduct numerical and theoretical investigations into the impact of an external electric field on viscous fingering in microfluidic channels for perfect dielectric fluids. It is shown that the development of viscous fingering can be delayed in the presence of an electric field and completely suppressed when the electric field strength E exceeds a certain value. Based on the force balance, a nondimensional parameter φ is defined to reflect the relative importance of stabilizing and destabilizing stress by taking into account the electrical, capillary, and viscous stress on the fluid interface. Extensive simulations show that φ can effectively characterize the transition from an unstable viscous fingering to stable displacement under different fluid properties and flow conditions. Abstract:Viscous fingering is a common instability event that occurs during the process of water-drive oil for oil recovery, significantly limiting the efficiency of oil extraction. In this study, we propose a film flow model that accounts for the variation in height at the water-oil two phase interface, enabling the calculation and analysis of the triggering mechanism and flow evolution process of this unstable phenomenon. We theoretically derive the equation of water film flow, which can be used to explore the flow evolution of the two-phase interface in the process of oil displacement. By numerically solving the two-dimensional flow equation, we obtain the traveling wave profile and find that the morphology of the two-phase interface is significantly affected by the plane's inclined angle, capillary number and density ratio of the two-phase liquid. Furthermore, we perform linear stability analysis and finite element numerical simulation considering small initial disturbances to explore the triggering conditions of viscous fingering phenomenon and the full time from gentle displacement to unstable flow. The results reveal that the moving contact line of the driven liquid front is more stable when the viscosity of the oil is less different from the driven liquid and has a smaller density, thereby improving of the driving efficiency in the water-driven oil process. These insights have significant implications for guiding efforts to enhance oil recovery efficiency, and we provide concrete engineering suggestions to achieve this aim.

Abstract:We study the viscous-fingering instability in a radial Hele-Shaw cell in which the top boundary has been replaced by a thin elastic sheet. The introduction of wall elasticity delays the onset of the fingering instability to much larger values of the injection flow rate. Furthermore, when the instability develops, the fingers that form on the expanding air–liquid interface are short and stubby, in contrast with the highly branched patterns observed in rigid-walled cells (Pihler-Puzović et al. , Phys. Rev. Lett. , vol. 108, 2012, 074502). We report the outcome of a comprehensive experimental study of this problem and compare the experimental observations to the predictions from a theoretical model that is based on the solution of the Reynolds lubrication equations, coupled to the Föppl–von-Kármán equations which describe the deformation of the elastic sheet. We perform a linear stability analysis to study the evolution of small-amplitude non-axisymmetric perturbations to the time-evolving base flow. We then derive a simplified model by exploiting the observations (i) that the non-axisymmetric perturbations to the sheet are very small and (ii) that perturbations to the flow occur predominantly in a small wedge-shaped region ahead of the air–liquid interface. This allows us to identify the various physical mechanisms by which viscous fingering is weakened (or even suppressed) by the presence of wall elasticity. We show that the theoretical predictions for the growth rate of small-amplitude perturbations are in good agreement with experimental observations for injection flow rates that are slightly larger than the critical flow rate required for the onset of the instability. We also characterize the large-amplitude fingering patterns that develop at larger injection flow rates. We show that the wavenumber of these patterns is still well predicted by the linear stability analysis, and that the length of the fingers is set by the local geometry of the compliant cell.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the viscous fingering instability considering a Newtonian oil displacing viscoelastic shear-thinning liquids and vice versa. The non-Newtonian liquids are aqueous solutions of polyacrylamide and xanthan gum, i.e., flexible and rigid polymers, respectively. A rectangular Hele-Shaw cell, connected by two plenum chambers, was developed to evaluate the displacement of a fixed volume. The experiment consists of analyzing the interface time evolution through a digital camera as a function of the geometric, dynamic, and rheological parameters. The displacement efficiency was determined through image processing in order to identify the formation of fingers or plugs. Unlike the Newtonian case, the transition does not occur when the viscosity ratio is roughly equal to one, but nevertheless, it was observed that the stability of the interface depends on the viscosity ratio. Specifically, more branches are observed at low viscosity ratios. Furthermore, a higher stability is observed when the Newtonian liquid displaces the shear thinning liquid, especially when the polymer is more rigid. When the Newtonian liquid is being displaced, elastic effects favor the displacing efficiency.

Compression-driven viscous fingering in a radial Hele-Shaw cell

Abstract:The displacement of a viscous liquid by a gas within a Hele-Shaw cell is a classical problem. The gas-liquid interface is hydrodynamically unstable, forming striking finger-like patterns that have attracted research interest for decades. Generally, both the gas and liquid phases are taken to be incompressible, with the capillary number being the key parameter that determines the severity of the instability. Here, we consider a radially outward displacement driven by the steady compression of a gas reservoir. The associated gas-injection rate is then unsteady due to the compressibility of the gas. We identify a second nondimensional parameter, the compressibility number, that plays a strong role in the development of the fingering pattern. We use an axisymmetric model to study the impact of compressibility number on the unsteady evolution of injection rate and gas pressure. We use linear stability analysis to show that increasing the compressibility number delays the onset of finger development relative to the corresponding incompressible case. Finally, we present and compare a series of experiments and fully nonlinear simulations over a broad range of capillary and compressibility numbers. These results show that increasing the compressibility number systematically decreases the severity of the fingering pattern at high capillary number. Our results provide an unprecedented comparison of experiments with simulations for viscous fingering, a comprehensive understanding of the role of compressibility in unstable gas-liquid displacement flows, and insight into a new mechanism for controlling the development of fingering patterns.
