Abstract:Based on the computation of thermodynamic properties of binary inert gas fluids, He-Ar mixtures were used as working fluids to improve the refrigeration performance of a thermo acoustically driven pulse tube refrigerator. The experimental results indicated that the refrigeration performance with appropriate He-Ar mixtures was better than that of pure He.

Abstract:A modified heat conduction calorimeter was developed and utilized in experiments using a quasi-scanning method. The isobaric heat capacities of R143a and R227ea in the liquid phase were measured at a maximum pressure over 5 MPa and temperatures of 310.15 K-365.15 K, respectively. The relatively expanded uncertainties of the measurements were estimated to be 0.030 and 0.029 for R143a and R227ea, respectively. The measurements resulted in 27 data points for R143a and 53 data points for R227ea. All experimental data were correlated with an empirical equation. The equations showed AAD% (Average Absolute Deviations (%)) of 0.32 % and 0.27 % between the experimental and calculated values of the correlated equations for R143a and R227ea, respectively. In addition, the MAD% (Maximum Absolute Deviations (%)) for R143a and R227ea were 1.01 % and 1.14 %, respectively. Heat capacity values of R143a and R227ea in the saturated liquid state were obtained by extrapolation of the correlated equations. Furthermore, comparisons were drawn between the measured values and those reported in literature.

Abstract:Isobaric specific heat capacity (C-p) is an important parameter not only in physics but also for most materials. Its accurate measurement is particularly critical for performance evaluation of thermoelectric materials, but the experiments by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) often lead to large uncertainties in the measurements, especially at elevated temperatures. In this study, we propose a simple method to determine C-p by measuring the sound velocity (v) based on lattice vibration and expansion theory. The relative standard error of the v is smaller than 1%, showing good accuracy and repeatability. The calculated C-p at elevated temperature (>300 K) increases slightly with increasing temperature due to the lattice expansion, which is more reasonable than the Dulong-Petit value.

Abstract:In this paper, the principle and experiment of the transient thermal gratings method are introduced. To demonstrate the applicability of the method, the thermal diffusivities of semiconductors, metals, and alloys have been measured by transient reflection grating method. As a result, the measured thermal diffusivities agree well with the values of literatures. In addition, the thermal diffusivities of several alloy samples have been analyzed, which illustrate that different alloy structures have different thermal diffusivity mechanisms. Furthermore, interfacial acoustics wave in the air above the sample s surface has been observed in the experiments.

Abstract:The principle of measurements of speed of sound in gaseous phase is discussed and a cylindrical variable-path acoustic interferometer is described.The uncertainty of speed of sound data measured in the experimental apparatus is estimated to be within 5×10-4.Based on thermodynamics,the relationship between the ideal-gas heat capacity at constant pressure and the speed of sound in the gaseous phase was analyzed.Speeds of sound for some new environmental friendly refrigerants were obtained and the corresponding ideal-gas heat capacities at constant pressure were also determined.

Abstract:Base on the steady-state theory,a non-flow calorimeter having a real-time changeable volume was designed and a specific heat capacity measurement system was constructed.In normal atmosphere,the specific heat capacities of pure water at temperatures ranging from 273.15~293.15 K were measured to verify the accuracy and reliability of the system.The measurement results show that the absolute average of relative deviations is 0.35% compared with the literature values.The correctness of the measuring principle and the accuracy and reliability of the experimental system were verified by the experimental results.At four different mixture ratios,specific heat capacities at constant pressure and specific heat capacities at constant volume for saturated liquid of oily R134a at temperatures ranging from 273.15~293.15 K were also measured.

Abstract:In order to determine the heat transfer coefficient under different cooling conditions, an experiment apparatus is designed to measure the cooling curves of air, water and different-pressure air spray cooling. A 120mm×120mm×20mm flat sample, proved to be one-dimension heat conduction by finite element method(FEM), is adopted for the measurement in this experiment. Both the Inverse Heat Conduction Method (IHCM) and Lumped Heat Capacity Method (LHCM) are used in the calculation of heat transfer coefficient. The results of air spray cooling are also discussed based on different pressures. The experiment results indicate that LHCM is applicable only when Bi0.1 and also indicate that during air spray cooling, the higher the pressure is, the greater the heat transfer coefficient is.

Abstract:Three methods of calculating condensation heat transfer coefficient of mixture refrigerants were compared. It was presented that the technique of gaseous heat resistance was suitable for the engineering application. The other formulae in literatures and the technique of gaseous heat resistance were separately compared with the experiment data. The results show that the technique of gaseous heat resistance is better than the other formulae, where liquid film heat resistance can be more accurately calculated by modified Shah formula.

Abstract:The emerging low-global-warming-potential refrigerants cis-1,1,1,4,4,4-Hexafluoro-2-butene (R1336mzz(Z)) and cis-1,2,3,3,3-pentafluoroprop-1-ene (R1225ye(Z)) are showing high application potential in refrigeration and organic Rankine cycle, but the necessary thermophysical property data are too scarce to support their commercial application. Among the thermophysical properties, the speed of sound is essential for engineering design and scientific research. In this study, the speed of sound of gaseous R1336mzz(Z) and R1225ye(Z) was determined experimentally by the acoustic resonance method with the help of a fixed-path cylindrical cavity. The sound speed data of R1336mzz(Z) covers the temperature range of (323 to 363) K and pressure range of (57 to 383) kPa, and that of R1225ye(Z) covers (298 to 363) K and (40 to 1022) kPa. The relative uncertainties of these measurements are within a few parts in 10-4, allowing accurate analysis to derive the ideal-gas heat capacity and the 2nd acoustic density virial coefficients. Further, the parameters of the hard core square-well intermolecular potentials are fitted to the acoustic data, allowing us to infer an estimate of the 2nd density virial coefficient of these substances. Quantitative calculation of uncertainties is also performed for these derived thermophysical parameters. Comparison of all these results with other data in the existing literature and the predictions of dedicated equations of state shows good agreement, supporting the claimed uncertainty of the experimental results.
An integrated sensor technology for measurements of specific heat ratio of combustion gases in supersonic flow

Abstract:We present an integrated probe system for measuring the specific heat ratioγof combustion gases by combining Pitot tube and laser beam tracking system.The key benefit of the measurement system is the elimination of the complicated gas chromatography apparatus.The pressure ratio and the angle of refraction of a laser beam across the normal shock wave generated by Pitot tube are simultaneously measured with this system.The angle of refraction of the laser beam is expected to be accurately recorded by the laser tracking system consisting of two CCD cameras and a mobile spatial coordinate measuring system (MScMS).Moreover,the density rati-o across the shock wave is deduced with Gladstone-Dale relation and Snell’s law.The specific heat ratioγis accordingly quantified by its relation to the pressure ratio and the density ratio across the shock wave.This technique may effectively reduce the time taken to obtainγ.Uncer-tainty estimation shows that the uncertainty brought by the laser beam tracking system and Pitot tube measurement are limited within 5 .5%for any Mach number if the stagnation temperature is lower than 1000K.Feasibility analysis present that the technique is physically realizable but a few technical issues need to be addressed before it can be implemented.

Abstract:The binary mixture 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (R1234yf) + 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R134a) is commercially interesting and is widely studied in thermodynamics properties, but except for gaseous speed of sound. In this work, we modified the experimental procedure of the cylindrical fixed-path acoustic resonance method for the sound speed measurement of mixtures. Then we obtained the first two sets of gaseous sound speed data at the molar fraction of about (0.207/0.793) and (0.580/0.420) with a combined relative expanded uncertainty (k = 2) of 0.03%. The accurate molar fractions along each isotherm line were determined by extrapolating the experimental data with the absolute expanded uncertainty (k = 2) of 0.003. The interaction virial coefficients were derived from the experimental sound speed data and were used to establish a hard-core square-well molecular potential model. A previous virial coefficient correlation was modified to predict the virial coefficients for mixtures. The experimental results and model calculations agree well with each other, confirming the correctness of the experimental method. The data could provide references to test and develop the mixing model.

Abstract:The gas viscosity and thermal conductivity are important fluid transport properties, and are related to thermodynamic states. Currently, the main methods to measure the viscosity and thermal conductivity require the gaseous samples to be exposed to non-stationary processes or non-equilibrium processes with gradients of the physical properties. Therefore, the gaseous samples are not located at a definitive thermodynamic state in time or space for each measurement. In this paper, a method to measure the gas viscosity and thermal conductivity at definitive thermodynamic states was studied by analyzing the dissipation of sound energy, which is controlled by the gas viscosity and thermal conductivity. This was performed using the transport theory for a dilute gas, based on the fixed path interference method with a cylindrical resonator. The results were verified by measuring the argon viscosity and thermal conductivity. The results agreed with data in the literature.

Abstract:We designed an original method of measuring the value of intermolecular interaction potential and universal gas con- stant R with simple instruments at the same time. According to the theory of momentum conservation, and CO2 gas can be seen as Van der Waals gas at room temperature, we design the integrated experiment which can be done at room temperature and can be applied to lecturing. And this can solve the problem of the lack of gas dynamic theory experiment in the college physics class.

Abstract:Design of air mixture receive box and measuring accuracy wet-bulb temperature affect the measuring accuracy directly in air enthalpy difference test system.The simulation result indicates that there is a good effect for installing a mixture receive device with a baffle and an educed board to diffuse the airflow uniformly and to improve the measuring accuracy.When the velocity of air is 5～7 m/s,the difference between testing wet-bulb temperature and real wet-bulb temperature is below 0.15%.

Abstract:Radiative cooling has emerged as a promising cooling technology for its potential in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. Remarkable progress has been made, and numerous novel materials have been designed and fabricated. However, different researchers adopted different homemade temperature measuring devices, making it difficult to compare the reported sub-ambient temperature drops since the thermal properties of different temperature measuring devices vary largely from one another, especially the non-radiative heat transfer coefficient. In this work, we propose a simple, accurate, and universal method to quantify non-radiative heat flux and non-radiative heat transfer coefficient of measuring devices, and compare them with the traditional method adopted in literature. The proposed method uses two identical measuring devices to measure the sub-ambient temperature drop and the net cooling power simultaneously to derive non-radiative heat transfer coefficient. To characterize and compare the thermal performance of a radiative cooling material or device, we recommend that both maximum sub-ambient temperature drop and non-radiative heat transfer coefficient should be reported. It is worth noting that the proposed method can obtain non-radiative heat transfer coefficient with high accuracy and it is not affected by weather conditions.

Abstract:trans-1-Chloro-3,3,3-trifluomprop-1-ene (R1233zd(E)) and trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobut-2-ene (R1336mzz(E)) have gained increasing momentum due to their low global warming potential (GWP) and good performance in heat pumps and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems. Accurate thermodynamic property data are required for industrial and commercial applications. Speed of sound data with high precision are vital to developing dedicated equations of state (EoS) and calculating other thermodynamic properties. In this work, we measured the speed of sound in the gas phase of R1233zd(E) and R1336mzz(E) by the fixed-path acoustic resonance method using a cylindrical resonator. The dimensions of the resonator are calibrated by Ar, Kr and He. The speeds of sound of R1233zd(E) were obtained at temperatures ranging from 313.15 to 363.15 K and pressures up to 550 kPa, and those of R1336mzz(E) were obtained in the temperature range from 298.15 to 363.15 K and the pressure up to 805 kPa. The combined expanded relative uncertainty (k = 2) of the sound of speed is 2.1 x 10(-4) for R1233zd(E) and 1.5 x 10(-4) for R1336mzz(E). The sound-speed data of R1233zd(E) agree with the EoS developed by Mondejar with an average relative deviation of -0.003%, which is the most accurate. The R1336mzz(E) data are the first set of published experimental sound-speed data. The ideal-gas heat capacity at constant pressure and the second acoustic virial coefficient were derived and compared to published data. The data measured and derived in this work can be used to establish the dedicated EoS of R1336mzz(E) for better prediction of thermodynamic properties.

Abstract:In this paper, by use of the second virial coefficient (12-6) in the Lennard–Jones potential, an analytical procedure to evaluate the specific heat capacity and speed of sound of gases is presented. The obtained formulas yield accurate and fast evaluation of both quantities. By using obtained analytical expressions, the heat capacity and speed of sound of the gases Ar, He, Xe, H2, O2, F2, Cl2, NF3, BCl3, Ga(CH3)3, CO2, and air were calculated in the temperature range from 100 to 2000 K and over the pressure range from 0.1 atm to approximately 15 atm. The computational results are in good agreement with the data available in the literature.

Abstract:According to experiment phenomena and data, which were about the influence of air in-leakage upon the condenser performance, the relations between the condenser pressure, heat transfer coefficient, terminal temperature difference and the air mass ratio were revealed in figures and tables. The critical values when the three parameters vary along with the air mass ratio were obtained. When the air mass ratio is smaller than its critical value, the pressure and terminal temperature difference increase slightly with the increase of air mass ratio. Accordingly the heat transfer coefficient decreases slightly with the increase of air mass ratio. When the air mass ratio is larger than its critical value, the pressure and terminal temperature difference increase rapidly with the increase of air mass ratio. And accordingly the heat transfer coefficient decreases rapidly. Moreover, the critical values for different parameters that vary with the air mass ratio are different, but all critical air mass ratios are about 1%.
