Classification of electronic structures and state preparation for quantum computation of reaction chemistry

Abstract:Quantum computation for chemical problems will require the construction of guiding states with sufficient overlap with a target state. Since easily available and initializable mean-field states are characterized by an overlap that is reduced for multi-configurational electronic structures and even vanishes with growing system size, we here investigate the severity of state preparation for reaction chemistry. We emphasize weaknesses in current traditional approaches (even for weakly correlated molecules) and highlight the advantage of quantum phase estimation algorithms. An important result is the introduction of a new classification scheme for electronic structures based on orbital entanglement information. We identify two categories of multi-configurational molecules. Whereas class-1 molecules are dominated by very few determinants and often found in reaction chemistry, class-2 molecules do not allow one to single out a reasonably sized number of important determinants. The latter are particularly hard for traditional approaches and an ultimate target for quantum computation. Some open-shell iron-sulfur clusters belong to class 2. We discuss the role of the molecular orbital basis set and show that true class-2 molecules remain in this class independent of the choice of the orbital basis, with the iron-molybdenum cofactor of nitrogenase being a prototypical example. We stress that class-2 molecules can be build in a systematic fashion from open-shell centers or unsaturated carbon atoms. Our key result is that it will always be possible to initialize a guiding state for chemical reaction chemistry in the ground state based on initial low-cost approximate electronic structure information, which is facilitated by the finite size of the atomistic structures to be considered.

Abstract:Correlating nanoscale building blocks with mesoscale superlattices, mimicking metal alloys, a rational engineering strategy becomes critical to generate designed periodicity with emergent properties. For molecule-based superlattices, nevertheless, nonrigid molecular features and multistep self-assembly make the molecule-to-superlattice correlation less straightforward. In addition, single component systems possess intrinsically limited volume asymmetry of self-assembled spherical motifs (also known as "mesoatoms"), further hampering novel superlattices' emergence. In the current work, we demonstrate that properly designed molecular systems could generate a spectrum of unconventional superlattices. Four categories of giant molecules are presented. We systematically explore the lattice-forming principles in unary and binary systems, unveiling how molecular stoichiometry, topology, and size differences impact the mesoatoms and further toward their superlattices. The presence of novel superlattices helps to correlate with Frank-Kasper phases previously discovered in soft matter. We envision the present work offers new insights about how complex superlattices could be rationally fabricated by scalable-preparation and easy-to-process materials.

Abstract:In this chapter, we will demonstrate how to use molecular orbital theory and band theory to understand the electronic structure of carbon-based molecules and materials. At first, we overview the well-developed modeling methods, such as cluster models, QM/MM models, and periodic models. We then demonstrate how to construct the molecular orbitals for small molecules from the linear combination of atomic orbitals, and extend the idea to materials. Moreover, the impact of physical effects on the electronic structure of carbon materials, such as stacking and rolling-up, is also discussed. Finally, the cycloaddition reaction on sp2 hybridized CC bonds is taken as an example to highlight the importance of partition and hybrid schemes in ONIOM.

Abstract:Chemical structure and bonding are key features and concepts in chemical systems which are used in deriving structure–property relationships, and hence in predicting physical and chemical properties of compounds. Even though the contemporary high standards in determination, using both theoretical methods and experimental techniques, questions of chemical bonds as well as their evolution along a reaction pathway are still highly controversial. This paper presents a working methodology to determine the structure and chemical reactivity based on the quantum chemical topology analysis. QTAIM and ELF frameworks, based on the topological analysis of the electron density and the electron localization function, respectively, have been used. We have selected two examples studied by the present approach, to show its potential: (i) QTAIM study on the α-Ag2WO4, for the simulation of Ag nucleation and formation on α-Ag2WO4 provoked in this crystal by the electron-beam irradiation. (ii) An ELF and Thom’s catastrophe theory study for the reaction pathway associated with the decomposition of stable planar hypercoordinate carbon species, CN3Mg3 +.

Abstract:General chemistry is a freshman-level class required for most science majors and pre-professional undergraduates. A variety of concepts are introduced in this course; among them, chemical reactions are fundamental, but remain a central topic. The author compared 10 textbooks widely used for college-level general chemistry courses. They all cover the three major classes of chemical reactions: precipitation reactions, acid-base reactions, and oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions. However, significant differences in the way these textbooks present the material may cause confusion and misunderstanding for students, including when they move to upper-level courses. The author suggests a modified reaction classification scheme for general chemistry courses, which will provide students a more complete and nuanced understanding of chemical reactions.

Abstract:Most elemental metals under ambient conditions adopt simple structures such as BCC, FCC and HCP in specific groupings across the Periodic Table, and on compression, many of these elements undergo transitions to surprisingly complex structures, including open and low-symmetry phases not expected from conventional free-electron based theories of metals. First-principles calculations have been able to reproduce many observed structures and transitions, but a unified, predictive theory of bonding that underlies this behavior is not yet in hand. We propose a remarkably simple theory based on large-scale high-throughput calculations of the elements over a broad range of thermodynamic conditions. The results broaden the conventional concept of metallic bonding with a new perspective that both explains the stability of different simple structures as well as lower symmetry phases arising from electron localization at interstitial sites in these structures. The success of this simple framework reveals the important role of chemical interactions in governing the structures and electronic properties of simple metals.

Computational Study on the Structures, Energetics and Reactivity of Some Novel Chemical Systems

Abstract:We have applied different theoretical models to investigate a number of chemical systems. These investigations include: (i) a Gaussian-3(G3), Gaussian-3X, CCSD (T)/CBS study of the structures and energetics of nitrogen oxides; (ii) a Gaussian-3(G3), Gaussian-3X, CCSD(T)/CBS study of the structures and energetics of sulfur compounds ; (iii) an ab initio study of the effects of BF3 and other Lewis acids on the oxidation of CH4 by some transition state oxo species, including FeO4, VO4, MnO4, CrO4 and HCrO4. The results of each of these projects are reported in a self-contained chapter in the thesis. In these studies, reasonable to excellent agreement is obtained between our computational structural and energetic results and available experimental data. This agreement lends confidence to those results with no experimental data for comparison. In addition, some of the reaction transition states are found.

Abstract:The three most widely used methods for analyzing atomic structures are evaluated by simulating crystalline solids and supercooled liquids. The local order parameter approach due to Volkov [Phys. Rev. E 66, 061401 (2002)] fails in randomly perturbed body-centered-cubic environments, while the pair analysis method behaves as an approximate approach depending on how the neighborhood is defined. As to the Voronoi analysis method, we improve the procedure of Brostow [Phys. Rev. B 57, 13448 (1998)] to eliminate distorted Voronoi faces and edges which originate from thermal vibrations and computational rounding errors. The improved procedure works robustly in face-centered-cubic, body-centered-cubic, and hexagonal close-packed environments. When the pair analysis technique and the Voronoi analysis method are applied to detect the microstructure and its evolution in supercooled liquids, qualitatively consistent results are attained.
A unified superatomic-molecule theory for local aromaticity in π-conjugated systems

Abstract:ABSTRACT Aromaticity is one of the most important concepts in chemistry. However, there is still no unified chemical insight for various systems with conjugated sp2 carbon. Herein, we proposed a superatomic-molecule theory to build a generalized electron rule for polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons, fullerenes and 2D periodic materials. Taking benzenoid units as 2D superatoms, polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons and C60 can be seen as superatomic molecules consisting of bonded superatoms, resulting in local aromaticity. In superatomic molecules, π electrons are not totally delocalized, but localized in a single superatom forming superatomic lone pairs or shared by two atoms forming a superatomic bond, mimicking rules in classical valence bond theory. Moreover, two 2D superatomic crystals (C18H6 and C54H18) are predicted to have fairly large band gaps (∼1.8 eV), although the π electrons are conjugated and delocalized. The proposed superatomic-molecule theory provides generalized chemical insights into the nature of local aromaticity, which can be qualitatively evaluated by the chemical intuition given by superatomic Lewis structures.

Abstract:To rationally design materials with desired properties, a modular approach based on volume- and shape-persistent nanobuilding blocks has been demonstrated recently. Constructing hierarchical supramolecular structures which span several length and energy scales is crucial to transfer and amplify the functionality of nanobuilding blocks to the bulk materials. Determination of soft material self-assembled structures thus plays a critical role in this approach; however, it is routinely the most time-consuming step due to the case-dependent sample preparation and insufficient number of X-ray and electron diffractions for direct structure determination. A rational thinking pathway for supramolecular structure determination is proposed in this article with covering a variety of essential concepts for a systematic case study. The scope of this article aims to guide newcomers in this field and expedite the molecular design screening for establishing a concrete relationship between molecular design and material properties—a part of the materials genome initiative.
