Abstract:Grain boundary (GB) mediated deformation is a vital contributor to the plasticity of polycrystalline ma-terials, where the disconnection model has become a widely recognized approach to depict the GB dy-namics. However, experimental understanding of the atomistic disconnection dynamics remains scarce. In this case study of gold nanocrystals, atomistic disconnection dynamics governing the shear-coupled migration of flat GBs have been systematically investigated via in situ transmission electron microscopy nanomechanical testing supported by molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, the site-dependent nucleation, shear-driven propagation, and diverse interactions associated with distinct GB disconnec-tions are systematically elucidated and quantitatively compared. Moreover, the disconnection-mediated GB plasticity proves to prevail among different tilt and mixed GBs in gold. Eventually, a conceptual map of disconnection-mediated GB dynamics is established, which would furnish a unified understanding of GB plasticity in metallic materials. Abstract:Since the discovery of Zintl phases in the 1891s, they have attracted considerable interests because of their novel structures, fascinated bonding and special physical properties. However, the research about Zintl phases is not complete, limiting the development of this discipline. Hence, in this work we systematically introduce the preparation approaches of Zintl phases and Zintl anions to understand the originations of their attractive structures. More importantly, the recent developments about their applications (such as thermoelectricity, catalysis, superconductor and magnetism) are thoroughly concluded. Especially, their devotions utilized as precursors for preparing functional materials are summarized. Additionally, the remaining challenges and perspectives of Zintl phases are further discussed. This review is aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Zintl phases, offering a directional guideline towards broad applications.

Spies Within Metal-Organic Frameworks: Investigating Metal Centers Using Solid-State Nmr

Abstract:Structural characterization of metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial, since an understanding of the relationship between the macroscopic properties of these industrially relevant materials and their molecular-level structures allows for the development of new applications and improvements in current performance. In many MOFs, the incorporated metal centers dictate the short- and long-range structure and porosity of the material. Here we demonstrate that solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy targeting NMR-active metal centers at natural abundance, in concert with ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray diffraction (XRD), is a powerful tool for elucidating the molecular-level structure of MOFs. Zr-91 SSNMR experiments on MIL-140A are paired with DFT calculations and geometry optimizations in order to detect inaccuracies in the reported powder XRD crystal structure. In-115 and La-139 SSNMR experiments on sets of related MOFs at two different magnetic fields illustrate the sensitivity of the In-115/La-139 electric field gradient tensors to subtle differences in coordination, bond length distribution, and ligand geometry about the metal center. Ti-47/49 SSNMR experiments reflect the presence or absence of guest solvent in MIL-125(Ti), and when combined with DFT calculations, these SSNMR experiments permit the study of local hydroxyl group configurations within the MOF channels. Zn-67 SSNMR experiments and DFT calculations are also used to explore the geometry near Zn within a set of four MOFs as well as local disordering caused by distributions of different linkers around the metal. SSNMR spectroscopy of metal centers offers an impressive addition to the arsenal of techniques for MOF characterization and is particularly useful in cases where XRD information may be ambiguous, incomplete, or unavailable.

Abstract:At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.
Novel Polar Intermetallic Π-Systems along the Zintl Border

Abstract:Studies have shown that complex Zintl phases exhibit a rich diversity of crystal structures. These have also revealed a remarkable success of the Zintl concept in rationalizing stoichiometry, crystal structure and chemical bonding of many main group intermetallics. Still there are unresolved questions about the usefulness of the concept in explaining structure-property relationships in intermetallics near the Zintl border, and as a rational tool in designing new materials. Limitations of the concept are represented by violations often associated with “electron-deficient” phases that contain Group 13 metalloids. Recent investigations on “electron-deficient” Zintl phases containing post transition metals have led to the synthesis of a number of novel inorganic-intermetallic π-systems. Since unique structures and properties are already apparent in normal Zintl phases, it is anticipated that the exploratory synthesis and characterization of conjugated and multiple-bonded inorganic systems will produce not only unusual crystal chemistry but interesting physical properties as well. We report on new complex Zintl phases that include the semiconducting SrCa2In2Ge - which features [In2Ge]6- chains and represents a novel inorganic conjugated π-system analogous to a polyallyl chain with In-In double bonds, and Ca5In9Sn6 - which contains In trimers, [In3]5- analogous and isoelectronic with the aromatic cyclopropenium cation, [C3H3]+. These unusual materials, Zintl π-systems, represent a promising class of electronic materials with a range of potential applications.

Abstract:CONSPECTUS: The ultimate goal of solid state chemistry is to gain a clear correlation between atomic, defect, and electronic structure and intrinsic properties of solid state materials. Solid materials can generally be classified as amorphous, quasicrystalline, and crystalline based on their atomic arrangement, in which crystalline materials can be further divided into single crystals, microcrystals, and nanocrystals. Conventional solid state chemistry mainly focuses on studying single crystals and microcrystals, while recently nanocrystals have become a hot research topic in the field of solid state chemistry. As more and more nanocrystalline materials have been artificially fabricated, the solid state chemistry for studying those nanosolids has become a new subdiscipline: solid state nanochemistry. However, solid state nanochemistry, usually called "nanochemistry" for short, primarily studies the microstructures and macroscopic properties of a nanomaterial's aggregation states. Due to abundant microstructures in the aggregation states, it is only possible to build a simple but imprecise correlation between the microscopic morphology and the macroscopic properties of the nanostructures.Notably, atomically thin two-dimensional inorganic materials provide an ideal platform to establish clear structure-property relationships in the field of solid state nanochemistry, thanks to their homogeneous dispersion without the assistance of a capping ligand. In addition, their atomic structures including coordination number, bond length, and disorder degree of the examined atoms can be clearly disclosed by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Also, their more exposed interior atoms would inevitably induce the formation of various defects, which would have a non-negligible effect on their physicochemical properties. Based on the obtained atomic and defect structural characteristics, density-functional calculations are performed to study their electronic structures. Then, after the properties of the individual ultrathin two-dimensional materials or their assembled highly oriented thin film-based nanodevices are measured, the explicit relationship between atomic, defect, and electronic structure and intrinsic properties could be established.In this Account, we focus on our recent advances in the field of solid state nanochemistry, including atomic structure characterization of ultrathin two-dimensional inorganic materials by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, characterization of their different types of structural defects by positron annihilation spectra and electron spin resonance, and investigation of their electronic structure by density-functional calculations. In addition, we summarize the close correlation between atomic, defect, and electronic structure variations and the optoelectronic, electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties of ultrathin two-dimensional materials. Finally, we also propose the major challenges and opportunities that face solid state nanochemistry. We believe that all the past achievements in ultrathin two-dimensional materials could bring new opportunities for solid state nanochemistry.

Abstract:Organozinc reagents play a critical role in synthesis, yet our comprehension of their structure-reactivity relationships is limited by a lack of information about their structures in solution. This study introduces a computational workflow, validated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, to investigate organozinc reagents in solution. The solvation states of ZnCl2, ZnMeCl and ZnMe2 were explored using ab initio molecular dynamics (metadynamics and Blue Moon sampling) within an explicit solvent cage. The study revealed the existence of various solvation states at room temperature, providing clarity on the previously debated structure of ZnMe2 in THF solution. These findings were confirmed by near- edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) interpreted using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations.

Abstract:Surface and interfacial chemistry is of fundamental importance in functional nanomaterials applied in catalysis, energy storage and conversion, medicine, and other nanotechnologies. It has been a perpetual challenge for the scientific community to get an accurate and comprehensive picture of the structures, dynamics, and interactions at interfaces. Here, some recent examples in the major disciplines of nanomaterials are selected (e.g., nanoporous materials, battery materials, nanocrystals and quantum dots, supramolecular assemblies, drug-delivery systems, ionomers, and graphite oxides) and it is shown how interfacial chemistry can be addressed through the perspective of solid-state NMR characterization techniques.
Solid-state alloying in nanostructured binary systems with positive heat of mixing

Abstract:While many binary systems exhibit a positive heat mixing that precludes intermixing in conventional bulk diffusion couples, it is possible to alloy in solid state some of these bulk immiscible elements in nanostructures. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that in low-dimensional systems such as surfaces and in sub-nanometer layered superlattice structures, excess enthalpic and entropic energy contributions can provide a driving force for spontaneous intermixing to form substitutional solid solution alloys. Such driving forces diminish, however, in coarser nanophase binary mixtures when domain sizes reach beyond ≈1 nm. In this case, true alloying on the atomic level can be achieved by employing an external forcing mechanism such as severe mechanical deformation. In addition to single-phase alloys, we demonstrate, using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analysis, a novel two-phase coexistence controlled by kinetically imposed polymorphic constraints. Using a phenomenological model, possible mechanisms responsible for driven alloying are discussed with reference to several previous proposals in the literature.

Abstract:We have monitored the formation of amorphous Ni/Zr alloy and the subsequent formation of an equiatomic NiZr intermetallic compound in Ni/Zr diffusion couples by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. The reaction has been studied as a function of the different initial Ni/Zr interfaces. A discussion of the microscopic origin of the critical thickness of the amorphous phase is given.

Atomistic Simulation on Mixing Thermodynamics of Calcite-Smithsonite Solid Solutions

Abstract:By using atomistic simulation and configurational statistics techniques, the thermodynamics of mixing for calcite-smithsonite solid solutions have been investigated. By employing a 2 x 2 x 1 supercell, the configuration with the lowest energy for the solid solution with a certain composition was determined. The incorporated Zn2+ tends to occur at the sites neighboring to another substituted Zn2+ within the (0001) layer, but the substituted layers are preferentially segregated by calcite layers, and vice versa. The supercells with compositions around the two end-members stand positive enthalpies at any temperatures, whereas those supercells with composition of about Ca0.5Zn0.5CO3 prominently exhibit negative values in various temperatures of reality (e.g., <1000 K). The free energies are prominently negative at high temperatures (>1500 K) for the whole range of compositions, only those around both end-members have positive values at some low temperatures (<1200 K). In the derived phase relations of this solid solution system, the potential incorporation content of ZnCO3 into calcite is only 0-2.5% mole fraction (i.e., Zn content of 0-1.6 wt%) in most geochemistry equilibrium processes, and vice versa.
The Solvent Induced Inter-Dimensional Phase Transformations of Cobalt Zeolitic-Imidazolate Frameworks.

Abstract:Studying inter-dimensional phase transitions of zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) is essential for developing strategies in controlling morphology and properties. Herein, the inter-dimensional topotactic phase transformations of 3D ZIF-67 to 2D ZIF-L are investigated in detail by employing a simple and efficient solvent-induced growth method. In addition to ZIF-67 and ZIF-L, a series of novel core-shell composites of ZIF-67@ZIF-L, with unprecedented morphologies, are also obtained and well-defined. The different behaviors of the amine hydrogen of 2-MIM in the solvents play a pivotal role for inter-dimensional phase transformations, and in combination with the concentration of 2-MIM, the 2D to 3D phase transformations are also revealed. The findings are very beneficial for morphological design of the ZIFs, along with exploration of the corresponding properties. Impressively, Co-ZIFs exhibit interesting tunable CO2 adsorption behaviors with the phase evolution, which might bring broader understanding for designing CO2 detection and adsorption devices.
Room-temperature Fast Zinc-Ion Conduction in Molecule-Flexible Solids

Abstract:Understanding solid-state zinc-ion conduction will not only be academically interesting but also benefit the development of energy-dense devices. However, zinc ions in conventional ceramic and polymer hosts are only mobile at high temperatures, and intriguing questions remain regarding the correlation between ionic local environment and conductivity performance. Here, we demonstrate a room temperature fast zinc-ion conduction in solids with a high degree of molecular flexibility and elucidate the subtle trade-off between molecular-scale interactions and ion transport properties. Importantly, a determining role of the strong cation-anion pairing in suppressing zinc-ion mobility has been experimentally uncovered. When removed, the upper limit of ionic conductivity can be extended to the order of 10(-4) S/cm, exceeding those of previous solid (solvent-free) zinc-ion conductors. Concomitant with the reversible plating/stripping of zinc (over 700 h), the successful creation of solid-state zinc-ion batteries confirms the practical applicability of the resultant conductors. Abstract:We discuss how structural disorder and amorphization affects solid-state diffusion, and consider zirconolite as a currently important case study. By performing extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we disentangle the effects of amorphization and density, and show that a profound increase of solid-state diffusion takes place as a result of amorphization. Importantly, this can take place at the same density as in the crystal, representing an interesting general insight regarding solid-state diffusion. We find that decreasing the density in the amorphous system increases pre-factors of diffusion constants, but not decreasing the activation energy. We also find that atomic species in zirconolite are affected differently by amorphization and density change. Our microscopic insights are relevant for understanding how solid-state diffusion changes due to disorder and for building predictive models of operation of materials to be used to encapsulate nuclear waste.
Quantum Dot Size Dependence on Ligand Exchange Driving Forces and Insights into the Structure of the Solvated Ligand Shell

Abstract:As synthesized, nanocrystal surfaces are typically covered by coordinating organic ligands. Prior to commercial applications, treatments are often utilized to exchange these native ligands for new ligands that can enhance the nanocrystal properties, such as electrical conductivity or luminescence. Understanding the thermodynamics of these ligand exchanges is critical for optimizing performance and gaining insight into reaction mechanisms. Previous work has shown that the geometry and length of a ligand’s aliphatic chain can influence the thermodynamics of exchange, which is attributed to inter-ligand interactions. In this report, the relationship between nanocrystal size and degree of inter-ligand interactions was studied using the reaction between indium phosphide quantum dots and zinc chloride. Using isothermal titration calorimetry and quantitative 1H NMR, alongside a modified Ising model simulation, we determined that inter-ligand interactions increase as the nanocrystal size increases, changing the thermodynamics of the ligand exchange reaction. Support for a phase transition in stearate ligand shells was indicated through our analysis and in powder X-ray diffraction data. The structure of the solvated ligand shell was also studied using X-ray diffraction, results from which suggest that the spacing between aliphatic ligands may increase as the ligand shell is solvated.

Abstract:In this research, the role that the organic inorganic liquid interface plays in the synthesis of non-equilibrium crystalline materials is investigated. A hierarchical nanocrystalline film of wurtzite ZnS, the high-temperature stable phase, is successfully prepared at room temperature by an interfacial in situ fabrication process. The organic inorganic liquid interface constructed by n-hexane and water acts as the reaction zone for the synthesis of ZnS nanocrystalline film. A series of experimental results have proved that the liquid-liquid interface is the key factor for wurtzite ZnS formation at room temperature without any additive. The ZnS film consists of core-shell subunits characterized by ZnS nanoparticles around an organic core. Between the liquid-liquid interface, the core-shell subunits are coupled onto the surface of a SAM-modified substrate by terminal amino groups, so that the ZnS nanocrystalline film is formed by a layer-by-layer mode. This research brings forward a feasible route for synthesizing wurtzite ZnS in one-step process at room temperature and provides some beneficial information for studying the structural kinetics of nonequilibrium crystalline synthesis.
Molecular dynamics simulation of diffusion in supercooled Cu–Zr alloys

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of diffusion in Cu–Zr alloys in their liquid and supercooled liquid states were performed using a recently developed Finnis–Sinclair many-body interatomic potential. To help assess how well the interatomic potential describes the energetics of the Cu–Zr system, the liquid structure determined by MD simulations was compared with wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements of the liquid structure for a Cu64.5Zr35.5 alloy. Diffusion was examined as a function of composition, pressure and temperature. The simulations reveal that the diffusion exhibits strong compositional dependence, with both species exhibiting minimum diffusivities at ∼70% Cu. Moreover, the MD simulations show that the activation volumes for Zr and Cu atoms exhibit a maximum near 70% Cu. Evidence is obtained that the glass transition temperature also changes strongly with composition, thereby contributing to the diffusion behaviour. The relationship between this minimum in diffusion and the apparent best glass-forming composition in the Cu–Zr system is discussed.
