Abstract:The photocatalytic properties of TiO2 have aroused a broad range of research interest since 1972 due to its abundance, chemical stability, and easily available nature. To increase its overall activity, in the past few decades, much effort has been devoted to the fabrication of advanced TiO2-based photocatalysts with visible-light response and these photocatalysts have shown great potential in the field of solar energy utilization. Here, recent progress in the investigation of visible-light responsive TiO2-based materials are reviewed. Notably, the fabrication strategies and corresponding chemical/physical properties of visible-light responsive TiO2-based materials are described in detail, with a focus on bandgap engineering and junction engineering from the perspective of light absorption, charge transfer and separation, and surface reactions. Their applications in solar-fuel production, organic synthesis, bacterial disinfection, pollutant degradation and nitrogen fixation are also discussed. Moreover, the new trends and ongoing challenges in this field are proposed and highlighted.

Abstract:In this paper the progress on research of visible light response TiO2photocatalyst was summarized. From the perspectives of positive ion doping, nonmetal elements doping, precious metals deposit, dye photosensitization and new type composite photocatalyst, the paper investigated the preparation, photocatalysis mechanism, effects and shortcomings of the concerned material. The research situation, progress and prospects of visible light response TiO2photocatalyst were described systematically.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is considered to be an effective solution for the current energy and environmental crises caused by industrial development. However, the practical application of conventional oxide photocatalysts is restricted by poor visible light adsorption because of their wide band gaps. The study of photocatalysts with a narrow band gap is thus a hot topic. Among oxide photocatalysts, Bi-based photocatalysts have attracted much interest because of their high visible light photocatalytic activity. This review summarizes recent advances into the type, preparation method, morphology control, composite construction, and properties of Bi-based photocatalysts. Finally, this review ends with a discussion on the future development of Bi-based photocatalysts in this exciting research area.

Owing to the widespread application of aqueous and photochemical synthesis, research on light‐induced oxidation in water, involving radical processes, has also experienced rapid development. Recently, numerous strategies for light‐induced aqueous oxidation have been ingeniously designed and developed. This review aims to discuss the notable recent advancements in this rapidly evolving field of oxidation reactions, with a focus on delving into the reaction mechanisms. It hopes to inspire the development of aqueous photocatalytic oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Conducting polymers (CPs) have been proved to be instrumental in enhancing photocatalytic efficacy owing to their unique physicochemical properties and energy levels. In this regard, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been investigated in transdisciplinary research areas (like catalysis, energy technologies, health, and environment) due to its desirable characteristics. In the process of developing advanced photocatalysts, novel inorganic–organic heterojunction design based materials have been explored and developed in contrast to conventional, inorganic–inorganic type semiconducting photocatalysts (SCPs). In this context, hybrid/composite SCPs comprising CPs and TiO2, have received significant attention for enhancing photocatalytic efficacy in terms of activity as well as visible light activation. The synergistic contribution from CPs (here we focus only on polyaniline (PANI) and polypyrrole (PPy)) and TiO2 have been proved to enhance light-absorption capability in the visible region, photogenerated extraction, and higher stability. Importantly, the published literature (before 2015) on the photocatalysis of TiO2-CP composites mainly discusses in terms of the sensitizing aspects of CP for TiO2. However, there is a critical need to review the literature (beyond 2015) to explore the state of art progress concerning the mechanism of photocatalytic performances as phenomenal parallel developments and knowledge gaps have been addressed on new kinds of heterojunction formation (like S-Scheme over traditional ones), band tuning and interfacial contact effects between two SCPs. In particular, this topical review aims to capture and highlight the current advancements (2016–2021) in relevance to the visible light photocatalytic performance of CP–TiO2 functional composites, which include nanostructures and multi-components. The predominantly available literature over the last five years on the application of CPs–TiO2 functional composites for monitoring or removal of pollutants under visible light activation is reviewed giving importance to revealing the role of CP in concurrent enhancement in both visible light activation and photocatalytic performances. Finally, we elaborate on the challenges and future outlook for advanced research and development in this area.

Abstract:Photocatalysis,which is the catalyzation of redox reactions via the use of energy obtained from light sources,is a topic that has garnered a lot of attention in recent years as a means of addressing the environmental and economic issues plaguing society today.Of particular interest are photosynthesis can potentially mimic a variety of vital reactions,many of which hold the key to develop sustainable energy economy.In light of this,many of the technological and procedural advancements that have recently occurred in the field are discussed in this review,namely those linked to:(1) photocatalysts made from metal oxides,nitride,and sulfides;(2) photocatalysis via polymeric carbon nitride(PCN);and(3) general advances and mechanistic insights related to TiO 2 -based catalysts.The challenges and opportunities that have arisen over the past few years are discussed in detail.Basic concepts and experimental procedures which could be useful for eventually overcoming the problems associated with photocatalysis are presented herein.

Abstract:This paper systematically reviews the latest progress in the field of photocatalytic CO2 reduction by seven types of materials focusing on the primary mechanism of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, the core issues in the reaction process, and summarizes the practical techniques to enhance the photocatalytic activity of CO2, including piezoelectric effect‐assisted photocatalytic reduction. The summary of the latest research progress of photocatalytic materials in CO2 reduction will provide valuable references for researchers involved in the design and development of photocatalytic materials. The conversion of CO2 into chemical fuels, which can be stored and utilized through photocatalysis, represents an effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable means to address both environmental concerns and energy shortages. CO2, as a stable oxidation product, poses challenges for reduction through light energy alone, necessitating the use of catalysts. Thus, a crucial aspect of CO2 photocatalytic reduction technology lies in the development of effective photocatalysts. Based on the basic principle of PCRR (photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction), the review provides a detailed introduction to the core issues in PCRR process, including the relationship between band gap and catalyst reduction performance, effective utilization of photogenerated carriers, product selectivity, and methods for product analysis. Then, the recent research progresses of various photocatalysts are reviewed in the form of research examples combined with the above basic principles. Finally, this review summarizes and provides insights into the effective techniques for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of CO2, while also offering future prospects in this field.

Abstract:The paper presents a review of studies about the visible-light-promoted photodegradation of the contaminants and energy conversion with sensitized photocatalysts. Herein we studied mechanism, physical properties, and synergism effect of the sensitized photocatalysts as well as the method for enhancing the photosensitized effect. According to the reported studies in the literature, inorganic sensitizers, organic dyes, and coordination metal complexes were very effective sensitizers that were studied mostly, of which organic dyes photosensitization is the most widely studied modified method. Photosensitization is an important way to extend the excitation wavelength to the visible range, and therefore sensitized photocatalysts play an important role in the development of visible light-responsive photocatalysts for future industrialized applications. This papermainly describes the types, modification, photocatalytic performance, application, and the developments of photosensitization for environmental application.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a promising technology that can contribute to renewable energy production from water and water purification. In order to further develop the field and meet industrial requirements, it is imperative to focus on advancing high efficiency visible light photocatalysts, such as silver phosphate (Ag3PO4). This review aims to highlight the recent progress made in the field, focusing on oxygen production from water, and organic contaminant decomposition using Ag3PO4. The most important advances are discussed and explained in detail, including semiconductor-semiconductor junctions, metal-semiconductor junctions, exposing facet control, and fundamental understanding using advanced spectroscopies and computational chemistry. The review then concludes by critically summarising both findings and current perspectives, and ultimately how the field might best advance in the near future.

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalysis based on semiconductors has recently been receiving considerable research interest because of its extensive applications in environmental remediation and renewable energy generation. Various semiconductor-based materials that are vital to solar energy utilization have been extensively investigated, among which titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) has attracted considerable attention because of its exceptional physicochemical characteristics. However, the sluggish responsiveness to visible light in the solar spectrum and the inefficient separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs hamper the practical application of TiO 2 materials. To overcome the aforementioned serious drawbacks of TiO 2 , numerous strategies, such as doping with foreign atoms, particularly nitrogen (N), have been improved in the past few decades. This review aims to provide a comprehensive update and description of the recent developments of N-doped TiO 2 materials for visible light-responsive photocatalysis, such as (1) the preparation of N-doped/co-doped TiO 2 photocatalysts and (2) mechanistic studies on the reasons for visible light response. Furthermore, the most recent and significant advances in the field of solar energy applications of modified N-doped TiO 2 are summarized. The analysis indicated the critical need for further development of these types of materials for the solar-to-energy conversion, particularly for water splitting purposes.

Photocatalytic technology has emerged as a crucial avenue for harnessing solar energy, presenting itself as a viable solution to address the current energy crisis and environmental pollution. The past 50 years have witnessed significant progress and breakthroughs in scientific research on photocatalytic technology. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the mechanism of photocatalytic technology and methods to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of semiconductor photocatalysts, such as TiO 2 and ZnO. In this paper, common modification methods are divided into four categories: heterojunction construction, cocatalyst, defects, and morphological engineering. The origin and development of photocatalysts in each category are briefly summarized; moreover, the latest progress in each type of modification is discussed. S-scheme heterojunctions retain the high reduction and oxidation capacity of photogenerated electrons and holes by sacrificing half of the photogenerated carriers, showing excellent performance in photocatalysis and great application potential. The challenges associated with current modification schemes are presented. There is growing interest in quantitative and atomic-level modulation as attractive approaches to tackling these challenges. Regulating the electronic spin state and internal field is important for minimizing photogenerated carrier recombination in photocatalysis. Abstract:In recent years,narrow band gap semiconductors have attracted extensive attention and become the research focus of the novel semiconductor materials because they are capable of Absorbing the visible light,degrading the organic pollutants and producing clean energy by splitting the water into hydrogen and oxygen under visible light irradiation.In this paper the material classification,factors controlling the photocatalytic performance,material synthesis technique and future application of two kinds of materials with narrow band gap characters,the modified titania and new narrow band gap semiconductor are summarized.Finally,the development trend of their research and application is also discussed.

Abstract:The development of visible-light-responsive photocatalysts is a promising challenge in the management of environmental pollution. Silver-silver halide nano-photocatalysts have received intensive attention due to their excellent photocatalytic performance in recent years, where silver nanoparticles/nanoclusters demonstrate plasmonic enhanced light absorption efficiency and have been considered as an important component in various functional photocatalytic nanocomposite materials, serving for harvesting visible light. This review provides an overall survey on the state-of-the-art silver-silver halide-based photocatalysts, fundamental understanding of their plasmonically induced photo-reactions and their major environmental applications. We first discuss the basic concepts of localized surface plasmon resonance, and outline the general mechanism of silver-silver halide-based photocatalysis. We then discuss the latest progress in the design and fabrication of silver halide based photocatalysis using various strategies. Next, we highlight some selected examples to demonstrate the new applications of silver/silver halide nano-photocatalysts. Eventually, we provide an outlook of the present challenges and some perspectives of new directions in this interesting and emerging research area.

Abstract:Research on photocatalytic materials has been a field in continuous expansion in the recent decades, as it is evidenced by the large number of articles published every year. So far, more than 190 different semiconductors have been assayed as suitable photocatalysts. To this figure, it is necessary to add the combinations with other functional materials or between different semiconductors, as well as their morphological modifications. Summing up the outcome of these different preparation strategies eventually leads to the enormous number of photocatalytic systems that have been reported in the scientific literature. Dealing with such an amount of information requires updated and educated guidance to select the most significant realizations, and it also calls for critical assessments on how the expectations are being fulfilled. This perspective article intends to assess the state of the art of photocatalysis with regard to materials and systems, considering the well-established results, but also the emerging aspects, and the envisaged new directions of this technology in the near future. In the first part, the most relevant achievements in this area, some of them already in the market while others still in development, will be reviewed according to the current understanding. The second part of the article is devoted to the most innovative and promising photocatalysts and related systems described in the open literature.
