Abstract:The photocatalytic properties of TiO2 have aroused a broad range of research interest since 1972 due to its abundance, chemical stability, and easily available nature. To increase its overall activity, in the past few decades, much effort has been devoted to the fabrication of advanced TiO2-based photocatalysts with visible-light response and these photocatalysts have shown great potential in the field of solar energy utilization. Here, recent progress in the investigation of visible-light responsive TiO2-based materials are reviewed. Notably, the fabrication strategies and corresponding chemical/physical properties of visible-light responsive TiO2-based materials are described in detail, with a focus on bandgap engineering and junction engineering from the perspective of light absorption, charge transfer and separation, and surface reactions. Their applications in solar-fuel production, organic synthesis, bacterial disinfection, pollutant degradation and nitrogen fixation are also discussed. Moreover, the new trends and ongoing challenges in this field are proposed and highlighted.

Abstract:The research on the metal oxide photocatalysts under visible light has been one of the most important issues in catalyst research.In this paper,recent progress of semiconductor photocatalysts under visible light irradiation is briefly reviewed with the emphasis on the relation between electronic structure and photocatalytic activity of these catalysts.Visible-light responsive photocatalytic activity of these catalysts can be attributed to narrow band gap and effective separation of photoinduced elelctrons and holes due to their own crystal structure and electronic structure.Some advice about the future work are provided.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis has been considered a potentially promising approach for renewable energy and environmental remediation with abundant solar light. However, the currently available semiconductor materials are generally limited by either the har‐ vesting of solar energy or insufficient charge separation ability. To overcome the serious drawbacks of narrow light-response range and low efficiency in most photocatalysts, many strategies have been developed in the past decades. This article reviews the recent advancements of visible-light-driven photocatalysts and attempts to provide a compre‐ hensive update of some strategies to improve the efficiency, such as doping, coupling with graphene, precipitating with metal particles, crystal growth design, and heterostruc‐ turing. A brief introduction to photocatalysts is given first, followed by an explanation of the basic rules and mechanisms of photocatalysts. This chapter focuses on recent progress in exploring new strategies to design TiO2-based photocatalysts that aim to extend the light absorption of TiO2 from UV wavelengths into the visible region. Subsequently, some strategies are also used to endow visible-light-driven Ag3PO4 with high activity in photo‐ catalytic reactions. Next, a novel approach, using long afterglow phosphor, has been used to associate a fluorescence-emitting support to continue the photocatalytic reaction after turning off the light. The last section proposes some challenges to design high efficiency of photocatalytic systems.

Abstract:Visible-light photocatalysts of titanium dioxide have significance in the practical application.The latest modification technology progress and their relevant opinions in titanium dioxide visible-light photocatalysts are introduced,including surface sensitization,metal ion doping,noble metal loading,composite semiconductors,nonmetal doping,etc.It is pointed out that the modification actually is such a process that makes the phtotocatalysts produce an inner band gap that nears the conduction band or valence band which can effectively respond to the visible-light.As to the problems in practical application,further study on modification should be focused on how to effectively hinder the electron from recombination,and a research direction of the sensitization to find relatively economical photosensitive materials or make an organic pollutant itself photosensitive.

Abstract:Titania is the promising photocatalyst for its high photochemical stability and low cost.It is usedfor different environmental applications,such as photocatalytic degradations of various organic contaminants into nontoxic compounds like water and CO_2,removing heavy metal ions from the solution or reducing them to less toxic ones,and allowing water to be photosplit into H_2 and O_2.However its large band gap energy limits its practical application inthe case of natural solar light.In the paper,recent development in the area of extending the light absorption of titaniainto visible light region is summarized,with emphasis on the mechanisms and modification methods.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of the recent advances achieved on visible light-responsive TiO 2 -based photocatalysts. In order to provide a focal point, we will highlight the work on transition metal ion-doped TiO 2 and TiO 2 thin films prepared by an RF magnetron sputtering deposition method, as well as their corresponding photoactivities on such significant reactions as organic decomposition and water splitting. Some of their proposed mechanisms are presented together with experimental physicochemical evidence to support the conclusions.

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalysis based on semiconductors has recently been receiving considerable research interest because of its extensive applications in environmental remediation and renewable energy generation. Various semiconductor-based materials that are vital to solar energy utilization have been extensively investigated, among which titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) has attracted considerable attention because of its exceptional physicochemical characteristics. However, the sluggish responsiveness to visible light in the solar spectrum and the inefficient separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs hamper the practical application of TiO 2 materials. To overcome the aforementioned serious drawbacks of TiO 2 , numerous strategies, such as doping with foreign atoms, particularly nitrogen (N), have been improved in the past few decades. This review aims to provide a comprehensive update and description of the recent developments of N-doped TiO 2 materials for visible light-responsive photocatalysis, such as (1) the preparation of N-doped/co-doped TiO 2 photocatalysts and (2) mechanistic studies on the reasons for visible light response. Furthermore, the most recent and significant advances in the field of solar energy applications of modified N-doped TiO 2 are summarized. The analysis indicated the critical need for further development of these types of materials for the solar-to-energy conversion, particularly for water splitting purposes.

Abstract:Titania is the promising material for its application in photocatalysis and photoelectric conversion. But its large band gap energy limits the practical application in the case of natural solar light, so the development of visible light-responsive titania is one of the most important subjects of the research. Recently, the progress has been made in the area of extending the light absorption of titania into visible light region by metal cation doping, metalloid anion doping, ion implantation and photosensitization. The modification methods to enable titania to operate under visible light are dealt with in this review.

Abstract:The visible-light-induced photocatalytic mechanism is briefly stated.The mechanism is almost the same as that of the ultraviolet-light-induced photocatalysis except for its charge transmission and separation mechanism.The research progress of visible-light-induced photocatalytic materials is reviewed in the past few years.By the doping of noble metal,transition metal ion and their compounds,or nitrogen doping,or loading on proper carriers,the band gap energy of the composite will be less than that of titanium dioxide,which induces the red shift of the absorption edge to respond to visible light.Zinc oxide with nitrogen doping,titanium dioxide with nitrogen doping and their composite semiconductor photocatalysts are reported to be very reactive in visible light irradiation.In addition,some oxynitrides,nitrides and many perovskite semiconductors can act as effective catalysts in the visible-light decomposition of water.

Abstract:The application of TiO_2 has been limited with its wide band gap [(3.0-3.2)eV]. The nonmetal -doped TiO_2 developed in recent years provides a promising opportunity for application of TiO_2 under visible light. The up-to-date development in preparation and vis-photocatalytic properties of the nonmetaldoped TiO_2 (N,C,S,F and B) was reviewed, and the vis-photocatalytic mechanisms due to doping with nonmetal were discussed. The preparation methods remarkably influenced the chemical states and contents of nonmetals in doped TiO_2,which decided the mierostates of the doping elements in TiO_2 crystal. There was a correlation of the microstates of the doping elements in TiO_2 crystal with the vis-photoeatalytic activity of doped TiO_2. The research direction of nonmetal-doped TiO_2 in the future were also outlined.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has received considerable attention because of its promising applications such as in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, photocatalytic dissociation of water, solar energy conversion, and disinfection.As an important semiconductor, photocatalytic materials, titania has been attracting the worldwide attention due to its good chemical stability, insolubility in water, and nontoxic, low cost, and readily available raw materials.It has become a hot topic in photocatalysis scopes that how to expand the spectral response range and improve the photocatalysis quantum efficiency of photocatalysts.Of course, the selected topics and papers are not an exhaustive representation of the area of visible lightresponsive photocatalysts.Nonetheless, they represent the rich and many-faceted knowledge, that we have the pleasure of sharing with the readers.We would like to thank the authors for their excellent contributions and patience in assisting us.Finally, the fundamental work of all reviewers on these papers is also very warmly acknowledged.

Abstract:The development of low-cost,environment-friendly second generation of photocatalyst with a high activity under visible light irradiation is a vital trend for the further practicability of photocatalysis.Titanium dioxide doped with nitrogen is a novel second generation of photocatalyst with visible light photocatalytic activity,the width of forbidden band of composite photocatalysts doped with nonmetal is less than that of TiO_2,which makes the absorption of TiO_2 move toward visible light.The research progress in visible-light photocatalysis of titanium dioxide doped with nitrogen,carbon,sulfur and halogen was reviewed,and the factors improving the visible light photocatalytic activity are analyzed.The anion doping using nonmetal,especially nitrogen,is thought as a promising method to realize the response of TiO_2 to visible light on the basis of maintaining violet light photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the progress in the modification of photacatalysis under visible light of titanium dioxide, and prospected the applied prospect of titanium dioxide.The modification methods of titanium dioxide photacatalyst under visible light includes:metal ions doped,non-metallic ions doped,semiconductors compound,surface sensitization of light and co-doped.Among this the most widely used method is co-doped,because it set the advantages of other methods, to improve the performance of titanium dioxide in reducing the band gap, improving the light-absorbing capacity,reducing the electron and hole recombination and other aspects.Meanwhile summarizes its recent experimental study on the degradation of pollutants in the environment, reduction of organic matter, solar cells and so on, showing its potential applications in many fields.Finally, this paper prospected the future direction and applied prospect of titanium dioxide catalyst under visible light.
