Abstract:Solar-energy-driven photocatalysis, such as photocatalytic reduction of CO2, is promising simultaneously for the energy and environmental issues. Coating thin carbon layers with the thickness less than 10 nm on photocatalysts has been developed as an efficient strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency in recent years. In the present review, we summarize the crucial progress on carbon-coated photocatalysts. Origins for the improved light absorption, charge separation, reactant adsorption and photocatalytic stability on carbon-coated photocatalysts as well as the applications of carbon-coated photocatalysts are discussed. Future opportunities and challenges associated with carbon-coated photocatalysts are shown at the end of the review. We hope that the present review can trigger more deep insights on carbon-coated photocatalysts and provide new opportunities for developing low-cost but efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Converting the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into important chemical fuels is promising to alleviate the global warming problem. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is beneficial for energy storage and environmental protection; however, it suffers from low efficiency. Recently, photothermal catalysis, which merits the advantages of both photocatalysis and traditional thermally driven catalysis, has been extensively studied and proven promising. Herein, the scope of catalyst type within heterogeneous catalysts is discussed, the latest progress of photothermal heterogeneous catalysts designed for CO2 conversion reactions is described, including the reduction of CO2 by H2O, CO2 hydrogenation to CO, CH4, CH3OH, or C2+, CO2 reforming of CH4 (CRM), CO2 cycloaddition reaction, etc. the preparation principles of photothermal catalysts are summarized, the challenges on the design and development of highly efficient photothermal catalysts are pointed out, and the future research directions are prospected.

Abstract:In recently years, photocatalytic CO 2 conversion into the value-added chemicals represents a promising approach to relieve the current energy and environmental problems, because it can be powered by renewable solar energy. This review introduces the principles and mechanisms of photocatalytic CO 2 conversion, with a particular focus on the research progress and key strategies involved in the behavioural manipulation of interfacial electron transfer and selectivit of multi-carbon products. Besides, the structure–activity relationship has also been summarized about the currently reported photocatalyst focuing on generation on multi-carbon products. Furthermore, the review also probes the current challenges and future directions, including improved CO 2 conversion efficiency and selectivity, understanded the reaction mechanism and considerated the economic and environmental factors. We sincerely hope that this review will attract more research attention towards photocatalytic CO 2 conversion for the synthesis of value-added multi-carbon products.

Abstract:Solar-driven carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion including photocatalytic (PC), photoelectrochemical (PEC), photovoltaic plus electrochemical (PV/EC) systems, offers a renewable and scalable way to produce fuels and high-value chemicals for environment and energy sustainability. This review summarizes the basic fundament and the recent advances in the field of solar-driven CO2 conversion. Expanding the visible-light absorption is an important strategy to improve solar energy conversion efficiency. The separation and migration of photogenerated charges carriers to surface sites and the surface catalytic processes also determine the photocatalytic performance. Surface engineering including co-catalyst loading, defect engineering, morphology control, surface modification, surface phase junction, and Z-scheme photocatalytic system construction, have become fundamental strategies to obtain high-efficiency photocatalysts. Similar to photocatalysis, these strategies have been applied to improve the conversion efficiency and Faradaic efficiency of typical PEC systems. In PV/EC systems, the electrode surface structure and morphology, electrolyte effects, and mass transport conditions affect the activity and selectivity of electrochemical CO2 reduction. Finally, the challenges and prospects are addressed for the development of solar-driven CO2 conversion system with high energy conversion efficiency, high product selectivity and stability.

Abstract:This article reviews the research progress in improving CO2 adsorption and proton generation to enhance photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency in recent years. Additionally, it discusses future research opportunities and challenges. The aim of this review is to provide a deeper understanding of visible light absorption, charge separation, CO2 adsorption and proton production for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction with H2O. Solar‐energy‐driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction by H2O to high‐valuable carbon‐containing chemicals has become one of the greatest concerns in both scientific and industrial communities, due to its potential in solving energy and environmental problems. However, efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 reduction by H2O is still far below the needs of large‐scale applications. The reduction efficiency is closely related to ability of photocatalysts in absorbing visible light which is the main part of sunlight (44 %), separating photogenerated electron‐hole pairs, adsorbing CO2 and producing protons for reducing CO2. Thus, photocatalysts with enhanced visible light absorption, electron‐hole separation, CO2 adsorption and proton production are highly desired. Herein, we aim to provide a picture of recent progresses in improving ability of photocatalysts in visible light absorption, electron‐hole separation, CO2 adsorption and proton production, and give an outlook for future researches associated with photocatalytic CO2 reduction by H2O.

Abstract:Converting solar energy into chemical fuels can effectively match existing energy structures and mitigate climate change. An oxygen vacancies (Vox) based photo-thermochemical (PTC) method has characteristics of both photochemistry and thermochemistry, making it possible to use both solar light and heat. In this paper, perovskite oxide catalysts were prepared by a solvothermal method. Multiple experiments and characterizations were performed to investigate the reaction process. We also performed FDTD simulations to illustrate the plasmonic characteristics of the materials in the PTC. With the existence of Au nanoparticles, the stable production of CO had a maximum value of 7.28 mu mol/g h, achieved by 1.5 gold-nanoparticle-loaded SrTiO3.

Abstract:This paper systematically reviews the latest progress in the field of photocatalytic CO2 reduction by seven types of materials focusing on the primary mechanism of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, the core issues in the reaction process, and summarizes the practical techniques to enhance the photocatalytic activity of CO2, including piezoelectric effect‐assisted photocatalytic reduction. The summary of the latest research progress of photocatalytic materials in CO2 reduction will provide valuable references for researchers involved in the design and development of photocatalytic materials. The conversion of CO2 into chemical fuels, which can be stored and utilized through photocatalysis, represents an effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable means to address both environmental concerns and energy shortages. CO2, as a stable oxidation product, poses challenges for reduction through light energy alone, necessitating the use of catalysts. Thus, a crucial aspect of CO2 photocatalytic reduction technology lies in the development of effective photocatalysts. Based on the basic principle of PCRR (photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction), the review provides a detailed introduction to the core issues in PCRR process, including the relationship between band gap and catalyst reduction performance, effective utilization of photogenerated carriers, product selectivity, and methods for product analysis. Then, the recent research progresses of various photocatalysts are reviewed in the form of research examples combined with the above basic principles. Finally, this review summarizes and provides insights into the effective techniques for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of CO2, while also offering future prospects in this field.

Abstract:Fossil fuels are currently the major energy source and are rapidly consumed to supply the increasing energy demands of mankind. CO2, a product of fossil fuel combustion, leads to climate change and will have a serious impact on our environment. There is an increasing need to mitigate CO2 emissions using carbon–neutral energy sources. Therefore, research activities are devoted to CO2 capture, storage and utilization. For instance, photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into hydrocarbon fuels is a promising avenue to recycle carbon dioxide. Here we review the present status of the emission and utilization of CO2. Then we review the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 by TiO2, modified TiO2 and non-titanium metal oxides. Finally, the challenges and prospects for further development of CO2 photocatalytic reduction are presented.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO 2 to value-added products has attracted overwhelming attention considering its environmental significance and economic benefit. However, because of the kinetic inertness and thermodynamic stability of CO 2 , great challenge still remains on its efficient activation, which is well-accepted as an uphill reaction that requires substantial energy inputs. This mini-review summarizes the state-of-the-art CO 2 activation strategies, including thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and other emerging catalytic techniques, for instance, coupling photo with thermal field. Moreover, the advantages, disadvantages, and potential products are discussed. Furthermore, CO has many industrial applications, such as being an important feedstock in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Therefore, recent research progress and challenges in CO 2 catalytic conversion to CO are highlighted in this mini-review by comparing different techniques with an outlook on the development of catalysts.

Abstract:Since the 21st century, with the increasing emissions of CO2-based greenhouse gases, it has been more and more urgent to seek new energy sources to build a low-carbon society. Among them, solar energy drives the conversion of CO2 into hydrocarbon fuel technology, which has great potential. This paper reviews the recent development of the field of photocatalytic reduction of CO2, including the progress of reactors and common catalysts. Through the analysis of a large number of literature and experimental data, the author highlights several key points: First, the paper describes the effects of different types of reactor structures and process parameters on the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 reactions, and reports an analysis of the influx state, temperature, light source, and fixation control of the catalyst. Second, the article focuses on the performance of different kinds of catalysts in photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions, including semiconductor catalysts, metal catalysts, and other catalysts that have appeared in recent years. The authors studied the development process, the modification method, and the influence of different structures on the reaction process and introduced the advantages and disadvantages of various catalysts, which provide guidance for finding more efficient and sustainable applications. Finally, this paper gives an overview of the problems and challenges mentioned in this study, discusses the methods and ways to further improve the reaction efficiency and catalyst stability, and proposes directions and ideas for future research. In conclusion, this article systematically reviews the important progress in the field of photocatalytic reduction of CO2, highlighting the development status and research progress of reactors and catalysts. It has important reference significance for the research and application of related disciplines.

Abstract:The continuous consumption of fossil energy and excessive emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) have caused a serious energy crisis and led to the greenhouse effect. Using natural resources to convert CO2 into fuel or high-value chemicals is considered to be an effective solution. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) catalysis utilizes abundant solar energy resources, combined with the advantages of photocatalysis (PC) and electrocatalysis (EC), to achieve efficient CO2 conversion. In this review, the basic principles and evaluation criteria, of PEC catalytic reduction to CO2 (PEC CO2RR), are introduced. Next, the recent research progress on typical kinds of photocathode materials for CO2 reduction are reviewed, and the structure–function relationships between material composition/structure and activity/selectivity are discussed. Finally, the possible catalytic mechanisms and the challenges of using PEC to reduce CO2 are proposed.

Abstract:Solar-powered CO2 reduction is a promising approach for mitigating the energy crisis and environmental issues. However, its efficiency is hindered by challenges including difficult CO2 activation, rapid charge recombination, and uncontrollable selectivity. Here, we develop WO3/In2O3 S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts by depositing In2O3 nanoparticles onto WO3 nanosheets for CO2 photoreduction. The Fermi level difference triggers electron transfer upon coupling, generating an internal electric field pointing from In2O3 to WO3 at the interface. This impels orientated charge transfer and effective separation of the powerful photoinduced carriers. With the unique S-scheme mechanism and the efficient activation of CO2 molecules on In2O3 surface, the resulting WO3/In2O3 heterostructures exhibit enhanced CO2 photoreduction performance with ~53.7% selectivity for CH4, without any molecule cocatalyst or scavenger. In-situ irradiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, along with density functional theory simulations are conducted to elucidate the photocatalytic and CO2-reduction mechanism, and the enhanced CH4-selectivity.

Abstract:Elimination or reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere is a serious problem faced by humankind, and it has become imperative for chemists to find ways of transforming undesirable CO2 to useful chemicals. One of the best means is the use of solar energy for the photochemical reduction of CO2. In spite of considerable efforts, discovery of stable photocatalysts which work in the absence of scavengers has remained a challenge although encouraging results have been obtained in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 in both gas and liquid phases. Semiconductor-based catalysts, multicomponent semiconductors, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and dyes as well as composites involving novel composite materials containing C3N4 and MoS2 have been employed for the photoreduction process. Semiconductor heterostructures, especially those containing bimetallic alloys as well as chemical modification of oxides and other materials with aliovalent anion substitution (N3- and F- in place of O2-), remain worthwhile efforts. In this article, we provide a brief perspective of the present status of photocatalytic reduction of CO2 in both liquid and gas phases.

Abstract:Nowadays, the excessive use of fossil fuels has led to a global energy shortage and exacerbated the greenhouse effect. One of the main contributors to the greenhouse effect is the excessive emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, to achieve sustainable development and harmonious symbiosis between human and nature, reducing CO2 emission has become a global concern. Converting CO2 into value-added products can effectively address this issue. At present, the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 using synthetic nanocomposites is a common method. Among the products of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, methanol (CH3OH) show promise as a new clean fuel and basic chemical raw material, with potential to reduce energy consumption. This paper reviews the research progress of photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH3OH in recent years. The difficulties and challenges in the photocatalytic process, along with potential solutions, are briefly discussed. Finally, the future prospect of this research is outlined.

Abstract:: Since the beginning of the 21st century, energy shortage and environmental pollution have been the major challenges faced by human beings. Photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction is one of the promising strategies to solve the energy crisis and promote the carbon cycle, in which semiconductor captures solar energy to obtain hydrocarbon fuel. However, the low activity and poor selectivity of the products greatly limit the practical application of this technology. Thus, it is of great significance to regulate product selectivity, improve photocatalytic efficiency, and deeply understand the mechanism of CO 2 reduction reaction. In recent years, ultrathin materials have attracted extensive attention from researchers due to their high specific surface area, abundant unsaturated coordination surface atoms, shortened charge migration path from inside to surface, and tailorable energy band structure, and have achieved promising results in the field of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. In this paper, the reaction mechanism of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is firstly summarized. Next, the research results of promoting electron hole separation and regulating charge transport path of ultrathin nanostructures by constructing heterostructures, designing Z-scheme systems, introducing cocatalysts, and defect engineering are introduced. Finally, the prospect and challenge of improving the efficiency of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction and optimizing the product selectivity are pointed out.
