Abstract:Chlorine atoms from chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) deplete stratospheric ozone and CFCs are green-house gases too. Owing to these environmental problems, many kinds of CFCs have been banned since the Montreal Protocol and two kinds of cleaning techniques have been developed. One is the synthesis of CFCs alternatives[1,2] and the other is the decomposition of banned CFCs in existing equipments[3,4].

Abstract:The catalytic decomposition of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC-12) in the presence of water vapor over WO3/ZrO2 strong acid, which is more thermally stable than the sulfated oxides superacids, is investigated. CFCs diffusing in stratosphere is a major reason for ozone depletion and is notorious for its greenhouse effect. So, it is important to eliminate CFCs to protect the ozone layer surrounding the earth. The catalytic decomposition is the most practical and favorable one, especially for treating small amounts of CFCs. TiO2 modified with H2SO4, which is more active than TiO2 for the decomposition of CFC-12 in the presence of water vapor, is presented. This tremendous enhancement in activity is attributed to the superacidic property of the sulfated catalyst.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrolysis is an efficient way to dispose existing chlorofluorocarbon pollutants. The chlorofluorocarbon hydrolysis catalysts can be classified into five categories including zeolites, metal oxides, SO 2- 4/M x O y and WO 3/M x O y type solid acids, phosphates and metal sulfates. The catalytic properties, the merits and demerits of these catalyst systems are reviewed from a practical point of view, and orientations in future research are discussed.

Abstract:The catalytic decomposition is one of the effective end-pipe technologies for PCDD/Fs removal from flue gas under mild conditions, which is on the basis of catalytic reduction and oxidation process. So far, the catalysts researched in lab-scale are mainly two categories; noble metal (Pt, Pb, Lr, etc.) and transition metal (V, Cr, W, etc.) oxides. In the field application, the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with V2O5/W(Mo) O-3-TiO2 as the catalyst is the most popular techniques, which can remove PCDD/Fs and NOx simultaneously. This paper reviews the wide scale of the catalytic decomposition of PCDD/Fs by noble metals and transition metal oxides. The destruction principles of PCDD/Fs by these two series of catalysts are introduced. The effects of the reaction conditions on the destruction efficiency are discussed such as catalysts and supports, temperature, H2O vapor, space velocity (SV) and the co-pollutants in the flue gas. Furthermore, the advantages and limitations of the destruction for PCDD/Fs by SCR are evaluated as well as the deactivation and poisoning of catalysts in situ applications. Based on the requirements of industrial application for PCDD/Fs and NOx removal, the research trends of SCR for the future are proposed in order to further improve the destruction efficiency and cost conservation.

Abstract:Vinylidene fluoride is one of the most important monomers in fluorine industry,which is mainly prepared by the pyrolysis of 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane (HCFC-142b) at high temperature. This research progress in the pyrolysis mechanism of HCFC-142b to vinylidene fluoride was introduced. The technologies and the development trend of catalytic pyrolysis of HCFC-142b were reviewed together with the improvements in the structure of cracking tube. In addition,study on the rectification of vinylidene fluoride was discussed. It is proposed that in-depth study on the mechanism of the pyrolysis of HCFC-142b and the effects of the material and structure of cracking tube should be conducted. Learning from the research progress in the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons,the difficulty of high energy consumption,catalyst loss,coking and other problems faced in the pyrolysis of HCFC-142b will be solved.

Abstract:The catalytic decomposition of CFC-12 (CCl 2 F 2 ) in the presence of water vapor was investigated over a series of solid acids WO 3 /ZrO 2 . Compared with tungstic acid, ammonium metatungstate is a better source of tungsten oxide for the preparation of WO 3 /ZrO 2 catalysts. CFC-12 decomposition activities of WO 3 /ZrO 2 catalysts are in good agreement with their acidities. Enhancing the acidities of catalysts is favorable to increase their CFC-12 decomposition activities. WO 3 /ZrO 2 catalysts calcined at higher temperature exhibit good catalytic activity and stability for the hydrolysis of CFC-12, and show better structural stability during the reaction.

Abstract:Ozone assisted carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supported vanadium oxide/titanium dioxide (V/Ti-CNTs) or vanadium oxide-manganese oxide/titanium dioxide (V-Mn/Ti-CNTs) catalysts towards gaseous PCDD/Fs (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans) catalytic oxidations at low temperature (150 degrees C) were investigated. The removal efficiency (RE) and decomposition efficiency (DE) of PCDD/Fs achieved with V-Mn/Ti-CNTs alone were 95% and 45% at 150 degrees C under a space velocity (SV) of 14000 h(-1); yet, these values reached 99% and 91% when catalyst and low concentration (50 ppm) ozone were used in combined. The ozone promotion effect on catalytic activity was further enhanced with the addition of manganese oxide (MnOx) and CNTs. Adding MnOx and CNTs in V/Ti catalysts facilitated the ozone decomposition (creating more active species on catalyst surface), thus, improved ozone utilization (demanding relatively lower ozone addition concentration). On the other hand, this study threw light upon ozone promotion mechanism based on the comparison of catalyst properties (i.e. components, surface area, surface acidity, redox ability and oxidation state) before and after ozone treatment. The experimental results indicate that a synergistic effect exists between catalyst and ozone; ozone is captured and decomposed on catalyst surface; meanwhile, the catalyst properties are changed by ozone in return. Reactive oxygen species from ozone decomposition and the accompanied catalyst properties optimization are crucial reasons for catalyst activation at low temperature. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:On the catalytic removal of chlorinated volatile organic compounds,the effects of catalysts from or modified by rare earth oxides on the catalytic combustion of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs),such as dichloromethane,dichloroethane,vinyl chloride,chorobenzene,were further investigated and discussed in detail.This paper focused on the relationship between the acidity and redox property of the catalyst.The acidity played a key role in CO selectivity and carbon deposition;while redox property dominated in the distribution of chlorinated byproducts.Based on the above dicussion,the way to design new catalysts for CVOCs combustion was suggested by tuning the acidity and redox property.However,the side effects of coke deposition,CO selectivity,the distribution of chlorination of organic compounds needed to be considered when exploring new catalyst with high activity and stability at low temperature.

Abstract:This study investigates the efficiencies and mechanisms of the catalytic degradation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) first, in simulated laboratory conditions and then, in a commercial municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plant. Five commercially available V2O5-WO3/TiO2 (VWTi) catalysts were tested. The degradation efficiency of PCDD/Fs in the simulated flue gas ranged 22.8-91.7% and was generally higher than that in the MSWI flue gas of 8.0-85.4%. The degradation efficiency of PCDD/Fs in the real flue gas of the MSWI plant was largely hindered by the complex composition of the flue gas, which could not be completely reproduced in the simulated laboratory conditions. Furthermore, the degradation of the higher chlorinated PCDD/Fs was easier compared to the lower chlorinated ones in the presence of the VWTi catalysts, which was primarily driven by the tendency of the higher chlorinated PCDD/Fs to be adsorbed on the surface of the catalyst and further destructed due to their lower vapor pressure. In addition, powdered catalysts should be preferred over the honeycomb shaped ones as they exposed higher PCDD/Fs degradation efficiencies under equal reaction conditions. The chemical composition and a range of the relevant to the study properties of the catalysts, such as surface area, crystallinity, oxidation ability, and surface acidity, were analyzed. The study ultimately supports the identification of the preferred characteristics of the VWTi catalysts for the most efficient degradation of toxic PCDD/Fs and elucidates the corresponding deactivation reasons of the catalysts.

Abstract:Catalytic decomposition of dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-12) in presence of water vapour and oxygen was studied over a series of solid super acids that have different ZrO2 content using a fixed-bed reactor. CO2 and CClF3 were the main-products and no CO was detected as by-product. The decomposition activity depended on the calcination temperature and the ZrO2 content. Calcined at 450 degrees C and 20-40 % ZrO2 content were the best catalyst preparation conditions. Adopting low concentration of oxygen and CFC-12 and high concentration of water vapour is preferable to the achievement of high conversion of CFC-12 and selectivity for CO2. The catalytic activity of MoO3/ZrO2 remained steady for 100 h on stream.

Abstract:Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) emitted from the industrial fabrication process and coatings, pharmacy, and incineration are toxic to the environment and humans. Catalytic combustion can convert CVOCs into CO2, H2O, and HCl/Cl2 at lower temperatures; as such, it is regarded as a promising method at present. However, it still causes serious secondary pollutants because of the involved toxic polychlorinated byproducts that are discharged in the tail gas or deposited on the catalyst surface or reaction device. This is because the individual combustion process cannot completely remove the dissociated chlorine to form HCl; therefore, it can react again with the catalyst or byproducts, resulting in the deactivation of the catalyst and the formation and accumulation of polychlorinated byproducts, including dioxin. The industrial catalytic hydro-dechlorination (HDC) process is more concerned with formation of HCl and acquisition of desired products, which is expected to achieve a possible result of complete elimination of industrial CVOC gas without secondary byproduct pollution via combination of the combustion process and HDC process. Herein, we highlight the reaction characteristics of combustion and HDC methods against CVOCs and provide a perspective on the need for accomplishing the elimination and recycling of industrial CVOCs in the design of possible combined processing methods.

Abstract:Catalytic decomposition of dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-12) in the presence of water vapor and oxygen was studied over a series of solid superacids, Mo2O3/ZrO2 that had different zrO(2) content by using a fIxed-bed reactor. CO2 and CCIF3 were the main products and no CO was detected as by-product. The decomposition activity of solid superacid largely depended on the content of zrO(2) and the calcination temperatures of MO2O3/ZrO2 The optimal calcination temperature and content of ZrO2 for preparing MO2O3/ZrO2 with the highest activity for catalytic decomposition of CFC-12 were 450 degrees C and 20-40% by weight, respectively. Adopting a low concentration of oxygen and CFC-12 together with a high concentration of water vapor was preferable for having the high conversion efficiency of CFC-12 and the selectivity for CO2, The catalytic activity of Mo2O3/ZrO2 remained steady for 100 h in continuous operation. Abstract:Chlorine-containing volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) have become a focus and difficulty in the field of catalytic combustion of VOCs due to their extensive sources, high biological/environmental toxicity, and easy inactivation of catalyst via Cl poisoning. Catalytic decomposition is considered to be one of the most effective and feasible methods to reduce the emissions of CVOCs due to its significant advantages of low energy consumption, high efficiency and less secondary by-products. High performance catalysts are the key to this technology. At present, the CVOCs degradation catalysts are mainly composed of single or complex metal oxide supports (e.g., Al_2O_3, TiO_2, MgO, and CeO_2) and noble metal (e.g., Pt, Pd, and Ru) reactivity center. In the oxidation reaction of CVOCs, the noble metal is easy to interact with Cl at low temperature, covering/inerting the active site, and resulting in a decrease in the low-temperature activity of the catalyst. Commonly strategy to improve the catalytic performance of supported precious metal catalysts include metal additive doping, active center state optimization, carrier property regulation, reaction condition adjustment, etc. In this review, we briefly review the research progress of noble metal (Pt, Pd, and Ru)-based catalysts in the catalytic oxidation of CVOCs, including doping transition metals, changing the intrinsic properties of supports, and adjusting reaction conditions to improve catalytic efficiency and performance. In addition to this, the future perspectives toward the development of CVOC purification catalysts are put forward.

Abstract:AbstractThe catalytic decomposition of dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC‐12) in the presence of water vapor on a series of SO42−‐promoted solid adds was investigated. CFC‐12 was decomposed completely on SO42−/ZrO2, SO42−/TiO2, SO42−/SnO2, SO42−/ Fe2O3 and SO42–/Al2O3 at 265°C, 270°C, 325°C, 350°C and 325°C, respectively, and the selectivity to by‐products was neglectable. Obvious deactivation was found on SO42−/ZrO2 and SO42−/Al2O3, during several hours on stream, while the catalytic activity was maintained on SO42−/TiO2, SO42−/SnO2 and SO42−/Fe2O3 for 240 h on stream.

Abstract:Decomposition of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) is of great significance due to their global distribution, persistence and toxicity to organisms. In this study, the photodegradation of a series of PFCAs (∼C2C12) in water by a medium-pressure mercury lamp was experimentally and theoretically examined. We found that photolysis of PFCAs all follow pseudo-first-order kinetics with the rate constant (kapp) increasing with carbon chain lengths, except for trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) which cannot be degraded by the polychromatic irradiation. Product analysis showed that the PFCAs were mainly decomposed into shorter carbon chain length PFCAs in a stepwise manner, with the accumulation of TFA and fluoride ions as the end products. Moreover, a small amount of perfluoroolefins (CnF2n) was determined as gas-phase products. Wiberg bond order calculations confirmed the cleavage of the CC bond between carboxylic carbon and the adjacent carbon as the first reaction step, and density functional theory-based calculations revealed that kapp value is correlated with some molecular structural parameters. In the case of mixture irradiation, the evolution profiles of individual PFCAs were different from that in single-component systems, due to the dynamic balance between production and degradation. This work reveals the main molecular descriptors controlling the degradation rate of different PFCAs species, and improves the general understanding on the photodegradation mechanisms, which will provide useful information for future researches.

Abstract:The severe hazard of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) to human health and the natural environment makes their abatement technology a key topic of global environmental research. Due to the existence of Cl, the byproducts of CVOCs in the catalytic combustion process are complex and toxic, and the possible generation of dioxin becomes a potential risk to the environment. Well-qualified CVOC catalysts should process favorable low-temperature catalytic oxidation ability, excellent selectivity, and good resistance to poisoning, which are governed by the reasonable adjustment of acidity and redox properties. This review overviews the application of different types of multicomponent catalysts, that is, supported noble metal catalysts, transition metal oxide/zeolite catalysts, composite transition metal oxide catalysts, and acid-modified catalysts, for CVOC degradation from the perspective of balance between acidity and redox properties. This review also highlights the synergistic degradation of CVOCs and NOx from the perspective of acidity and redox properties. We expect this work to inspire and guide researchers from both the academic and industrial communities and help pave the way for breakthroughs in fundamental research and industrial applications in this field.
