Abstract:The recycling of waste carbon fibers (CF) has emerged as a crucial research area for both environmental protection and economic sustainability. To sufficiently exert the potential and extend the application life cycle of CFs, here we propose an eco-friendly and efficient electrostatic method for rapid recycling of tightly entangled reclaimed carbon fibers (rCFs) by spark-driven disentanglement and depolymerization. Our research indicates that the spark discharge generated by fiber induction under low-voltage conditions can excite the shock waves and Joule heating effects, resulting in the separation of individual rCFs and the removal of surface organic matrix. Furthermore, the constructed electric field can synchronously and continuously orient the dispersed rCFs to form a vertical alignment in a short time with good maneuverability and directionality for reutilization. The results demonstrate that this one-step disentanglement, depolymerization, and alignment method achieves a high-quality recycling process with 100% dispersion efficiency, minimal damage, cost-effectiveness, uniform distribution, upright orientation, and high-speed embedding performance. Our findings reveal the potential of the electrostatic strategy for the high-quality recycling of rCFs, in line with the principles of the circular economy. The proposed method offers broad prospects for application in continuous in-line production and material manufacturing, and is a step towards sustainable and cost-effective CF recycling.

Abstract:The recycling for reproduced carbon fibers (rCFs) attracts more interests in the industrial community of green manufacturing and the academic field of function-enhanced composites. To sufficiently exert the potentials and extend the application life cycle of rCFs, here we propose a technology of electric field induced manipulation to achieve the operational stages of recovery and reutilization for short-chopped carbon fibers (SCCFs) under the same configuration. Considering the electric property of SCCFs and expected functional objectives, the multi-material receiving anode comprised of polar dielectric layer and metal plate was originally designed. Performance characteristics of steady-state and step-rising electrical excitations were investigated for respective operational stages, and dynamic behaviors on the recycling state of SCCFs were observed by experiments. Accordingly, the working principle of this novel approach was preliminarily discussed. The results show that a large scale of SCCFs would experience the state manipulations of dispersion and collection based on electrostatic induction, and directed transport driven by dielectric polarization. This study suggests a pollution-free and low-cost method with high-efficiency to recycle rCFs, and further has broad application prospects in the preparation of resin-based function-enhanced composites and disposing conductive tiny objects.

Abstract:Refrigeration and Air conditioning technology plays a significant role to pro-mote the civilization progress in human society.But the heavy use of CFCs and HCFCs as refrigerant destroys the ozone layer,as well as increasing global warming.HFCs,the al-ternative to CFCs and HCFCs,have 0 ODP,while most of which have higher GWP.CFCs have been phased out,HCFCs and HFCs are being or will be phased-down.Refrigerant with 0 ODP and lower GWP would be the only choice in the future.This kind of alterna-tives is environmental friendly;however,safety issues like flammablility,toxicity and high pressure are still exsiting,which causes concerns.In fact,these refrigerants have been used in RAC sector for a long time.Long-term operation experience,lots of scien-tific researches and risk evaluations carried out at home and abroad show that if safety measures taken strictly,the alternatives could be used safely.

Abstract:As a highly efficient thermodynamic cycle formed by pure natural fluid and using aerothermal energy, transcritical CO2 technology has huge advantages in terms of energy consumption, equivalent carbon content and environmental benefits, and is an important technological means for global carbon neutrality and renewable energy structure transformation. After reviewing the development history of refrigerants and the basic principle of transcritical CO2 technology, the technical characteristics, research status and development trend of the transcritical CO2 cooling/heating technology in the fields of vehicle air conditioning, building heating, hot water supply, drying industry, commercial cold chain and other fields are comprehensively summarized in details. The main problems in the development of transcritical CO2 technology was summarized regarding different applications with their unique operating conditions and requirements, while corresponding structural modification and thermodynamic parameter optimization schemes have been briefly summarized. As results, it has been proved that CO2 refrigerant has become one of the most important solutions in various applications, and this historical trend has been almost irreversible. Therefore, the future development of the transcritical CO2 technologies, including the system intelligentization and expansion work recovery techniques such as expander, ejector and vortex tube, were carefully analyzed. In summary, the explosive development of the transcritical CO2 technology will be significant for mitigating the contemporary environmental challenges and respecting the regulations on the progressive ban of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), so relevant contents are detailed in this paper for providing reference for its further engineering and industrialization.
Study on the management status and countermeasures for waste polyurethane foam from refrigerators in China

Abstract:The amount of waste refrigerators has been increased gradually with the scientific and technological progress and accelerated rate of replacement products. A large amount of polyurethane foam generated form dismantling of refrigerators, are difficult to be degraded owing to many CFCs containing. How to effectively treat and dispose the polyurethane foam has become the global concern. While in China, the polyurethane foam generated are usually landfilled or incinerated rather than comprehensively utilized. Based on investigation for the amount of polyurethane foam generation and disposal techniques, this paper has made a comparison of five different types of treatment technologies, including thermal recovery method, physical method, chemical method, biological method and pyrolysis method, and analyzed their economy and practicability. Meanwhile, combined with the relevant state policy requirements, the paper analyzed main problems faced by the management on polyurethane foam and provides specific suggestions.

Abstract:Fluorinated refrigerants are an important type of fluorinated organic compounds that have been widely used since their invention. Due to the ozone-depleting and greenhouse gas effects of the chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons, their production and use have been restricted, but there is a large stockpile still in existence. The third and fourth generation fluorinated refrigerants hydrofluorocarbons and hydrofluorolefin have moved towards full fluorination, which increases their stability but also makes disposal more difficult. It is urgent to develop disposal methods with mild reaction conditions and high energy efficiency, and to seek processes for resourceful conversion of waste refrigerants. This review article compiles research on the degradation and resourceful utilization methods of fluorinated refrigerants. The current research ideas can be divided into: 1 Providing the energy required for breaking chemical bonds through heat energy. 2 Directly or indirectly reducing fluorinated refrigerants through electric fields. 3 Using catalytic methods to reduce reaction activation energy and guide the reaction to proceed through different mechanisms. Building upon previous research, this paper outlines the current challenges and future development directions for each disposal method.

Abstract:This paper focuses on current progress of supercritical fluid (SCF) technology for e-waste treatment through reviewing characteristics and challenges of existing technologies. With the high-speed development of science and technology, electronic and electric equipment continually upgrades and updates, which bring a series of problems on dealing with the e-waste. The most serious problem is that the harmless disposal of halogen flame retardants and refractory polymers in e-waste is difficult. In recent years, the recycling technologies for e-waste has entered a new stage through tireless efforts of the researchers. Compared with the common recycling technologies like pyrolysis and acid leaching, SCF technologies have great advantages in the field of environment, without air or water pollution risks. Supercritical fluids such as supercritical water and supercritical carbon dioxide are sustainable green solvents as well as highly promising reaction mediums. The principles, operation procedures and optimized parameters of SCF treatment are discussed and summarized in this paper. Furthermore, SCF technologies applied in the field of e-waste recycling have also achieved satisfactory results. Significant progress has been made in the detoxification of e-waste and removal of refractory polymers by SCF technologies. The dechlorination efficiency and debromination efficiency has been reported to be over 90%. The base metals, the precious metals, and other inorganic materials were all reported to be recovered from e-waste by SCF technologies with a recovery rate of more than 93%. Common challenges in SCF process like corrosion and salt precipitation also came up with some propose solutions. Hence, the application of SCF technology in e-waste treatment demonstrates green reaction and resource recovery with significant economy and environment perspectives.

Abstract:A large amount of hazardous trichloromonofluoromethane (CFC-11) is contained in the polyurethane (PUR) foam of refrigerator cabinet. How to recover the cabinet of waste refrigerator with environmental awareness has been the pressing problem in the treatment of waste refrigerator. The published literature of waste refrigerator cabinets recovering mainly focuses on policy making and conceptual design. Little information relates to the production line of waste refrigerator cabinet recovering and its detailed operation, which is the urgent needed literature. In this paper, an environmental friendly production line for recovering the cabinet of waste refrigerators was reported for helping enterprise or government to construct line to recover the obsolete refrigerators. It included closed shearing process, activated carbon fiber absorption (ACFA) process, air current separation, and magnetic/eddy current separation. The optimized operating parameters of every process were obtained from the experiments. Then, experiment of recovering 50 waste refrigerator cabinets by the production line was performed in factory. Mass balances of the recovered materials were carried out. The result shown the recovery rate of waste refrigerator cabinet could reach 97.6%. Finally, comparison between the production line and other recovery technologies was made. The results indicated that the proposed line provided environment-friendly recovery of waste refrigerator cabinets while achieving low cost of production. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) working fluid with high global warming potential are step out of the stage of history due to the intensifying global greenhouse effect. Supercritical water gasification (SCWG), an effective and clean waste disposal method, may have better potential for the conversion of waste HFCs working fluid. ReaxFF reactive molecular dynamic and density functional theory method are used in this work to investigate the SCWG mechanism of HFC-245fa. The results indicate that the main products of HFC-245fa SCWG are high value-added chemicals and fuels such as CO, CO 2 , H 2 , and HF. During the gasification process, almost 100 % of the F atoms in HFC-245fa have the potential to become HF, which means that the SCWG method has a strong defluorination effect. The generation of H 2 molecules is promoted and the formation of CO molecule is inhibited in the presence of H 2 O molecules. More importantly, hydrogen bonds are formed between HFC-245fa and H 2 O molecules, which results in the dissociation of HFC-245fa is improved by the SCWG environment. This work provides an available and environmentally friendly route for the efficient conversion of waste HFCs to fuels.

Abstract:CFCs and HCFCs, widely used in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, have been or will be phased out according to the revisions of the Montreal Protocol because they deplete the ozone layer. Many substitutes have been proposed, but no one has perfectly replaced the CFC and HCFC refrigerants. New generation alternatives are being investigated worldwide. According to the industrial and environmental requirements, many factors should be considered in the screening and evaluation of refrigerant alternatives. A new method is proposed using the soft algebra method—fuzzy multiple evaluation. The weights for different factors are determined mathematically and criteria values for all the objects are made dimensionless to quantitatively compare the different alternatives. A new long-term drop-in mixture alternative THR02 is developed and evaluated in a series of theoretical and experimental evaluations. THR02 is proved to be an environment-friendly, nontoxic, inflammable, drop-in alternative to CFC-12 and HFC-134a. The thermal performance of the compressors and refrigerators with THR02 as a drop-in is equal to or higher than with CFC-12 and HFC-134a. The compressor and refrigerator using THR02 perform reliably after long-period running.

Abstract:Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which possess the characteristics of high volatility and destroy ozone layer, are hardly disposed of through traditional methods. With a tightly closed reaction environment and high-temperature water medium, CFCs can react and generate inorganic Cl- and F- under subcritical water conditions, which is very useful to enhance leaching and enrich rare metals. Therefore, in the current study, CFCs and photovoltaic wastes containing gallium arsenide (GaAs) were co-processed for mineralization and enhanced leaching simultaneously. Based on frontier orbital theory and bond energy theory, possible decomposition pathways of CFCs were speculated. Enhanced leaching process was studied in detail. When experimental conditions were 300 ? and 8.8 MPa, the mineralization rates of organofluorine and organochlorine in CFCs were 83.68% and 93.37%, respectively. Leaching agent generated by the hydrothermal treatment of CFCs leached GaAs effectively, and the leaching rates of gallium and arsenic were 95.74% and 99.89%, respectively. Converting CFCs into leaching agent will not only avoid ozone layer depletion but also save the cost of hazardous waste treatment and realize economic benefits. Environmental impact assessment indicated that the proposed Ga recycling route allows remarkable reduction of total environmental impacts compared with published processes.
Risks in the Physical Recovery System of Waste Refrigerator Cabinets and the Controlling Measure.

Abstract:Environmental information in physical recovery system of waste refrigerator cabinets was provided in this paper. The system included closed shearing, activated carbon adsorption (ACA), air current separation, magnetic separation, and eddy current separation. Exposures of CFC-11, heavy metals, and noise emitted from the system were assessed. Abundant CFC-11 (>510 mg/m³) was detected in crusher cavity. However, due to the employment of ACA, little CFC-11 (<9.5 mg/m³) could be detected out the recovery system. Heavy metals were detected in the air of workshop (TSP: Cu ≤ 4.91 μg/m³, Pb ≤ 3.17 μg/m³, PM10: Cu ≤ 2.1 μg/m³, Pb ≤ 1.3 μg/m³). Assessment results indicated the concentrations of heavy metals in air were safe for workers. Copper (25.8 mg/kg) and lead (19.5 mg/kg) were found in ground dust of the workshop and the concentrations were safe for soils. Noise level (98.2 dB(A)) of crushing process could cause disease and hearing impairment to workers. For controlling noise, acoustic hood was designed to reduce the noise level to 69.7 dB(A).The above information was of assistance to the industrialization of physical process for recovering waste refrigerator cabinets on environmental protection. Meanwhile, it contributed to the knowledge of environmental information of physical technology for recovering e-waste.
