Abstract:To evaluate the effects of operation conditions on formation and emission of PCDD/Fs from fluid- ized bed municipal solid waste （MSW） incinerators, the PCDD/Fs samples taken from different areas of four typical fluidized bed incinerators with different treatment capacities were analyzed and studied. Re- sults show that the combustion temperature plays a role in influencing the PCDD/Fs formation, but it is not the main influencing factor for final emission of PCDD/Fs. The PCDD/Fs, formed in heterogeneous reaction at low temperature during flue gas passing through the purification devices, contributes to the o- verall emission of PCDD/Fs. The service age of bag filters is a key factor highly affecting the PCDD/Fs e- mission. New bag filters are quite effective on control of PCDD/Fs emission, but aged bag filters have poor and even negative effect in PCDD/Fs removal, due to its ＂memory effect＂.

Abstract:For the long-term operation of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI), online monitoring and feedback control of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) can be used to control the emissions to national or regional standards. In this study, 500 PCDD/F samples were determined by thermal desorption gas chromatography coupled to tunable-laser ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TD-GC-TLI-TOFMS) for 168 h. PCDD/F emissions range from 0.01 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 to 2.37 ng I-TEQ/Nm3, with 44% of values below 0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 (the national standard). In addition, the temperature of the furnace outlet, bed pressure, and oxygen content are considered as key operating parameters among the 13 operating parameters comprising four temperature parameters, four pressure parameters, four flow parameters, and oxygen content. More specifically, maintaining the furnace outlet temperature to be higher than 800 °C, or bed pressure higher than 13 kPa, or the oxygen content stably and above 10% are effective methods for reducing PCDD/F emissions. According to the analysis of the Pearson coefficients and maximal information coefficients, there is no significant correlation between operating parameters and PCDD/F I-TEQ. Only when there is a significant change in one of these factors will the PCDD/F emissions also change accordingly. The feedback control of PCDD/F emissions is realized by adjusting the furnace outlet temperature, bed temperature, and bed pressure to control the PCDD/F to be less than 0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm3.

Abstract:Dioxins have been widely concerned for its high carcinogenicity and possibility of long-term influences on human body. One of the main sources of dioxins is the municipal solid waste incinerator. The control technologies of dioxins were reviewed in two aspects, namely PCDD/Fs control during incineration and removal of PCDD/Fs in exhaust gases and new development directions of control technologies of dioxins were previewed.

Abstract:Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) are the key pollutants of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI). In this study, the characteristics of 17 toxic 2,3,7,8-substituted congeners in flue gas along six air pollution control devices (APCDs) were investigated in a 400 t/d moving grate furnace located in a typical megacity of Shenzhen, China. The phase distribution and removal efficiency of the different APCDs were analyzed, especially the effect of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device. The results showed that PCDD/F TEQs were 59.5%, 67.1%, and 72.5% partitioned into the gas phase (XAD-2 and condensed water) at the economizer outlet, fabric filter outlet, and stack, respectively. Furthermore, the three-year-old catalyst in the SCR tended to remove PCDDs, especially those in the solid phase (filter thimble). More importantly, the PCDF TEQs at the SCR inlet and outlet were 1.045 x 10(-3) and 1.568 x 10(-3) ng I-TEQ/Nm(3), respectively, which meant that the SCR might be ineffective for PCDF TEQ removal. A continuous chlorination of lower chlorinated PCDD/Fs increased the ratio of PCDFs and PCDDs from 0.73 at the SCR inlet to 1.76 at the SCR outlet. This work indicated the asynchronized inefficient removal of PCDD/Fs and nitrogen oxide for this three-year-old catalyst. The obtained results provide suggestions for the entire process of curbing PCDD/F emissions and obtaining ultra-low emission from MSWI. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Effect of Different Air Pollution Control Devices on the Gas/solid-Phase Distribution of PCDD/F in a Full-Scale Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator.

Abstract:The emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/F) from full-scale municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) is harmful to human and environmental health. This study analyzes the effect of different units of an air pollution control devices (APCDs), i.e. the semi-dry scrubber, fabric filter (FF), selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and wet scrubber (WS), on the removal characteristics and gas- and solid-phase distributions of PCDD/F in MSWI flue gas. APCDs reduce PCDD/F concentrations from 24.9 ng Nm(-3) to 0.979 ng Nm(-3) (2.16 ng I-TEQ Nm(-3) to 0.0607 ng I-TEQ Nm(-3)), with a total removal efficiency (RE) of 96.1% (97.2% I-TEQ). Specifically, APCDs remove more than 95% of both gas- and solid-phase PCDD/F. The FF coupled with active carbon injection (FF + ACI) substantially reduces both gas- and solid-phase PCDD/F concentrations with an RE of 97.2% (98.7% I-TEQ). Additionally, FF + ACI exhibits a better RE of PCDF (98.9%) than PCDD (94.6%) and leads to PCDD congeners dominating the gas-phase. Both desorption and destruction of PCDD/F occur in the SCR, which favors removal of gas-phase PCDD/F but increases solid-phase PCDD/F. Therefore, SCR only decreases PCDD/F with a low RE of 27.6% (16.9% I-TEQ). However, SCR reduces NO x with a high RE of 82.3%, which could inhibit the RE of PCDD/F because of their different reaction mechanisms. WS increases PCDD/F in both the gas and solid-phase by 1.95 times (2.57 times for I-TEQ) due to the memory effect, which typically increases the total mass concentration of PCDD/F and the proportions of lower-chlorinated gas-phase PCDD/F. Migration of gas- and solid-phase PCDD/F are also analyzed according to temperature. The results of this study can contribute to the optimized design of industrial APCDs for controlling PCDD/F emissions from MSWI. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) consist of 210 kinds of pollutants, 17 of which are highly toxic to humans. PCDD/F is mainly produced during combustion and incineration processes. This review focuses on the formation, measurement, and control of dioxins in municipal solid waste incineration. Typical PCDD/F emission concentrations and air pollutant control devices are introduced in the work. The formation mechanisms of PCDD/F are divided into homogeneous synthesis and heterogeneous synthesis, and some previous reviews and the latest work are introduced. Considering the complexity, high cost, and time lag of traditional offline detection methods based on high-resolution gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry, fast and indirect measurement techniques have been recently developed, among which resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry is a good option. The study of online/at-line in situ measurements and the correlation between PCDD/F and the indicator are reviewed in detail. Due to the strict policies regarding pollutants' emissions, state-of-the-art remediation technologies are used to reduce dioxin formation and emission from incineration. A comprehensive discussion about the control of dioxin emission is also reviewed in this work. Finally, challenges, future directions, and perspectives are proposed.

Abstract:Incineration as a method of reducing Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) volume and recovery of energy has been developed gradually in China. More attention is paid on polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans, (PCDD/Fs) formed in MSW incineration process. This paper presents results of the analysis of PCDD/Fs in the residues of a fluidized bed incinerator co-firing MSW and coal in the Yuhang Thermal Power Plant. The effects of operation conditions and the wet scrubber system on PCDD/Fs formation were also analyzed. PCDD/Fs emitting from the smoke stack was 0.92 I-TEQ ng/Nm 3 . After the wet scrubber emission of dioxins increased and the shifting of homologue profiles in flue gas was also observed, PCDFs were not detected in the incinerator residues. From this, we can see that in the MSW incineration process, the formation mechanism of PCDFs was different from that of PCDDs. The results will benefit further research on the optimal operation of incinerator and control of PCDD/Fs emission from the MSW incinerator.

Abstract:Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are among the most toxic chemicals and the main restriction on municipal solid waste incineration. To exert more effective control over the formation of dioxin homologues during municipal solid waste incineration, it is significant to investigate dioxin-related compounds. Despite the numerous studies about PCDD/Fs, a unified understanding regarding many problems has yet to be reached because the homologues of PCDD/Fs are excessive, the measurement of PCDD/Fs is difficult, and the formation mechanisms of PCDD/Fs are complicated. Firstly, this paper briefly introduces the different formation mechanisms of PCDD/Fs, including high temperature homogeneous reaction PCDD/Fs formation and low temperature heterogeneous reaction PCDD/Fs formation. Then the sources of PCDD/Fs including precursors (chlorophenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and residual carbon are summarized. In particular, this paper analyzes the substances that influence PCDD/Fs formation and their impact mechanisms, including different categories of chlorine (Cl-2, HCI and chloride in fly ash), O-2, copper, sulfur, water, and nitrogen compounds (ammonia and urea). Due to the high cost and complexity of PCDD/Fs measurement, PCDD/Fs indicators, especially chlorobenzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are summarized, to find an effective surrogate for quick, convenient and real-time monitoring of PCDD/Fs. Abstract:Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the flue gas from two 10 types of waste incinerators (municipal solid waste incinerators and hazardous waste incinerators) 11 the most commonly used in China were investigated in this study. The PCDD/F emissions from 12 the stack gas of the waste incinerators showed a large variation from 0.016 to 0.29 ng I-TEQ∙m-3 13 with an average value of 0.103 ng I-TEQ∙m-3. The emission factors of PCDD/Fs were in the 14 range of 0.056-0.607 μg I-TEQ∙t-1 (average 0.235 μg I-TEQ∙t-1) for municipal solid waste 15 incinerators (MSWIs) and 0.07-3.27 μg I-TEQ∙t-1 (average 1.03 μg I-TEQ∙t-1) for hazardous waste 16 incinerators (HWIs), respectively. It was estimated that 10.2-88.0 mg I-TEQ (average 35.0mg 17 I-TEQ) and 1.13-53.0 mg I-TEQ (average 17.1 mg I-TEQ) of PCDD/Fs were annually released to 18 the atmosphere, respectively from MSWIs and HWIs. The level and congener patterns of 17 19 species of PCDD/Fs in the ambient air and in soil samples around the MSWIs and HWIs were 20 investigated to evaluate the influence of PCDD/F emission on the environment. The PCDD/F 21 concentrations in the ambient air from the 5 MSWIs and 4 HWIs ranged from 0.088 to 13.9 pg 22 I-TEQ∙m-3 with an average value of 0.185 pg I-TEQ∙m-3. The soil samples in the vicinity of 23 MSWIs and HWIs presented concentrations between 0.68 and 16.0 ng I-TEQ·kg−1 with an 24 average value of 3.98 ng I-TEQ∙kg-1. This study showed that PCDD/F emission from the 25 incineration plants had an obvious impact on the surrounding ambient air. 26
Polychlorinated Dibenzo- P -Dioxins and Dibenzofurans in Flue Gas Emissions from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators in China

Abstract:Polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) emissions in flue gas from two types of municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) most commonly used in China were investigated in this study. The selected incinerators include two grate-type MSWIs: MSWI-A (350 t/d) and MSWI-B (150 t/d), and two fluidized bed MSWIs: MSWI-C (400 t/d) and MSWI-D (400 t/d), which are all equipped with semi-dry lime scrubber and bag filter except MSWI-D equipped with cyclone and wet scrubber (WS) as air pollutant control device (APCD). Results indicated that the emission concentration and the international toxic equivalents (I-TEQs) of the PCDD/Fs from the stacks were in the range of 1.210∼10.273 ng/Nm 3 and 0.019∼0.201 ng I-TEQ/Nm 3 , respectively. They were greatly lower than the emission regulation standard of PCDD/Fs in China (1.0 ng I-TEQ/Nm 3 ). However, only the PCDD/Fs emission level from MSWI-C was below 0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm 3 . Although the homologue profiles were distinct, the contributions of the 2,3,7,8-subsituted congeners to the total I-TEQ were similar among all the investigated MSWIs. Two major 2,3,7,8-substituted congeners, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF and 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, account for 47% and 9% (average values) of the total I-TEQ values, respectively. The correlation between PCDD/Fs levels and composition of flue gas was also discussed.

Abstract:Existing online monitoring system for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), technically named Thermal Desorption-Gas Chromatography-Tunable Laser Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (TD-GC-TLI-TOFMS), has been applied in several incinerators in China. TD-GC-TLI-TOFMS can realize rapid detection of PCDD/Fs emissions from incineration sources. However, the long-term measurement of unclean flue gas will pollute the instruments in TD-GC-TLI-TOFMS, and interfere with the peak output of the target 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (1,2,4-TrCBz). In this study, Deans switch (DS) was utilized for the first time in an online monitoring system for PCDD/Fs to separate 1,2,4-TrCBz signal from impurity signals, which improved the antiinterference capability of the system. Laboratory standard gas experiments showed that after adding a DS device between GC and TLI pulse valve, when the pressure set in DS was 4 psi and switched before or near the peak output of 1,2,4-TrCBz, the change of 1,2,4-TrCBz signal intensity was minimal. The impurities near the target peak were removed, and TLI-TOFMS was highly stable during continuous measurement. Moreover, the maximum intensity peak time of 1,2,4-TrCBz was stable after using DS in different switching time intervals. When connecting DS to TD-GC-TLI-TOFMS for field validation on the tail flue gas of a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI), results showed that a better 1,2,4-TrCBz signal could be obtained with a 69.52 % reduction of impurity peaks at the moments closer to the target peak. Furthermore, DS improved the sensitivity of the system to low concentration variations of 1,2,4-TrCBz in the flue gas. The robust system developed in this study can be better applied to incineration factories with poor combustion or suboptimal purification technology, facilitating online PCDD/Fs monitoring.

Assessment of PCDD/Fs formation and emission characteristics at a municipal solid waste incinerator for one year

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) has become a predominant emission source of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs). Research focusing on the impact of operating conditions, environmental changes, and operating time on the generation and emissions of PCDD/Fs has not been resolved. To this end, this study tracked and investigated the PCDD/Fs and 17 congener emissions of a typical grate incinerator (800 t/d) continuously for one year. Results showed that the PCDD/Fs concentration at the boiler outlet, stack inlet, and bag filter, including normal and abnormal operation conditions, ranges from 2.11E-02–41.86 ng I-TEQ/Nm 3 , 7.00E-04–6.76 ng I-TEQ/Nm 3 , and 1.12–2.90E+03 ng I-TEQ/Nm 3 , respectively. The 2,3,4,7,8-P 5 CDF has the highest contribution in all samples, in which a proportion of TEQ ranged from 30 % to 77.73 %. Moreover, by applying the correlation analysis between PCDD/Fs and operating parameters, the emission characteristic is mainly affected by incinerators and boilers during the normal period, and it is affected by the whole MSWI process under abnormal conditions. In addition, the PCDD/Fs emission from the MSWI plant gradually increases from spring to winter. This study is beneficial for supporting the control of PCDD/Fs emission reduction and assisting the operators to optimize the relevant operating parameters of the MSWI plant to achieve a stable and up-to-substandard emissions during the operation period.

Analysis and discussion on formation and control of dioxins generated from municipal solid waste incineration process

Abstract:Dioxins are a kind of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with extremely toxic. Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) process has become one of the most dominant discharge sources of dioxins. A comprehensive discussion about dioxin formation mechanisms was reviewed in this paper, and the mechanisms of high-temperature gas-phase reaction and "de novo" synthesis were systematically illustrated in the form of diagrams. What's more, the effects of various influencing factors on the formation of PCDD/Fs were briefly analyzed in the form of a table. We believed that temperature, catalyst, chlorine source, carbon source, oxygen concentration and moisture were necessary factors for PCDD/Fs formation. Control technologies of dioxins in MSWI process were summarized subsequently from three stages: pre-combustion, in-combustion and post-combustion, and a device for synergistic removal of dioxins based on multi-field force coupling and technical routes for controlling dioxin emissions were proposed, so as to provide mechanisms and methods for effectively reducing the emission concentration of dioxins. An introduction was also conducted of dioxin control technologies in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) in this paper, and their mechanisms, advantages, disadvantages and technical maturity were illustrated in the form of diagrams, which can provide theory and reference for in-depth research of follow-up scholars and industrial application of dioxin control technologies. Finally, current research hotspots, challenges and future research directions were proposed. Implications : In this paper, the main research contents and achievements are as follows: With the emphasis placed on the formation mechanism of dioxins and effects of various influencing factors on the formation of PCDD/Fs. The control technology of dioxins in MSWI process is summarized subsequently from three stages: pre-combustion, in-combustion and post-combustion.A device for synergistic removal of dioxins based on multi-field force coupling and technical routes for controlling dioxin emissions are proposed.A systematic review is conducted of the research progress on control technologies of dioxins in MSWI fly ash in the most recent years.The mechanisms, advantages, disadvantages and technical maturity of PCDD/Fs degradation technologies in MSWI fly ash are illustrated in the form of diagrams.Current research hotspots, challenges and future research directions are proposed.

Abstract:Ambient air monitoring of polychlorinated dibenza-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) was performed to investigate their concentrations, profiles, and sources near a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) in Eastern China. The PCDD/F concentrations varied over a factor of 51.4 from 0.059 to 3.03 pg I-TEQ m(-3) (or over 41.4 from 3.96 to 164 pg m(-3)) and fell at the higher end of the range in recorded peer investigations around the world. Almost all ambient air samples show a unique TCDF-dominant homologue pattern, characterized by decreasing concentrations with increasing levels of chlorination (except for OCDD). By contrast, the dominant congener in terms of concentration profiles shows temporal and spatial variations among the OCDD, OCDF, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF. The results from a congener-specific factor analysis between ambient air and PCDD/F emission sources, as well as U.S. EPA Chemical Mass Balance (CMB8.2) and Industrial Source Complex Short Term Version 3 (ISCST3) modeling, suggest that the deterioration of air quality in the study area is primarily attributed to open burning of wastes (OB), followed by hot water boilers (HWBs), traffic, and the MSWI.
Correlation Between PAHs and PCDD/Fs in Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators

Abstract:In order to understand the correlation between polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs),series measurements had been conducted on four municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) with two mechanical stock grates and two fluidized bed incinerators. The emission characteristics of PAHs and PCDD/Fs were evaluated based on the results by using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) analysis. It was found that Heptachloro and Octachloro dibenzo-p-dioxins (HpCDD,OCDD) take a significant portion of the toxic congeners in the flue gas from waste incinerator. The major isomers of PAHs in the mechanical stock grate were naphthalene and fluorene,while phenanthrene and fluoranthene in the fluidized bed incinerator. The linear regression analysis showed that fluorene was the appropriate indicator for toxic equivalent (TEQ) of PCDD/Fs in MSWI and the coefficient of determination was 0.62. The multiple regression analysis with naphthalene,fluorene and phenanthrene showed that the coefficient of determination was 0.85. PAHs concentration was typically in the range from 1 to 10 μg/m3,so the vacuum ultraviolet/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (VUV/TOFMS) instrument could realize real-time monitoring PAHs,then provide the data of PCDD/Fs or TEQ indirect. It is useful for the control of PCDD/Fs emission and the optimization of varying incineration conditions.

Abstract:Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) emitted from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration have detrimental effects on the ecological environment. This study innovatively invented a high-temperature sampling device for PCDD/Fs, followed by a process tracing experiment conducted in a full-scale MSW incinerator to investigate the formation and migration mechanisms of PCDD/Fs throughout the temperature range (850°C–150°C). The results highlighted the considerable PCDD/F level of 0.446 ng I-TEQ Nm −3 at the @1 furnace outlet (850°C). The distribution characteristics of PCDD/Fs suggested a prevalence of high-temperature homogeneous reactions in the flue zone between sites @1 and #1 (850°C–600°C). In the low-temperature zone, de novo synthesis emerged as the dominant formation mechanism, primarily occurring near the @2 superheater outlet (∼368°C) and inside the SCR system (∼230°C). The impact and removal efficiency of individual air pollutant control devices on PCDD/Fs was systematically analyzed, yielding an overall PCDD/F reduction of 99.7%. Remarkably, the buffering effect of economizer, the co-removal of semi-dry deacidification system, and the adsorption-filtration effect of activated carbon injection and fabric filter individually reduced PCDD/F concentrations by 23.9%, 35.3%, and 99.7%, respectively; while de novo synthesis inside the SCR system negatively impacted PCDD/F removal, demonstrating an efficiency of −43.2%. Consequently, these comprehensive insights inspired industrial operation optimization and ultra-low PCDD/F emission control.
