Abstract:Professor Yitai Qian,a pioneer in nanomaterials,an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC),has committed his entire career to the development of solid-state chemistry and nanoscience in China.Prof.Qian is recognized for his pioneering contributions to the development of emerging high-Tc superconducting materials,and the development of solvothermal methodology for the synthesis of a wide range of low-dimensional nanomaterials.Beyond the landmarking scientific advancements he has made in his own trailblazing research,Prof.Qian has directly mentored more than 100 excellent PhD students,in addition to many more master and undergraduate students,many of them have gone on to become the leading scientists in China and worldwide in the field of nanoscience and beyond.Without exaggeration,the academic offspring and extended family of Prof.Qian have contributed a substantial portion of nanoscience and nanotechnology development over the past several decades.

Abstract:Professor Fosong Wang was born in Guangdong, China in 1933 and received his undergraduate education at Wuhan University between 1951 and 1955. Following graduation, he went to the Former Soviet Union to continue his graduate studies whereupon, in 1960, he received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the Institute of High Molecular Compounds of the Soviet Union Academy of Science. After he returned to his motherland, Professor Wang joined the Chinese Academy of Sciences where he remains to this day. From 1985 to 1988, he served as Director of the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, and from 1988 to 1994, Professor Wang served as Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Abstract:In honor of Prof. Dr. Detlef W. Bahnemann's 70th birthday and his distinguished and continuous contributions in semiconductor photocatalysis and nanotechnology, a Special Issue (SI) has been successfully organized, comprising 5 review articles and 34 research articles contributed by his colleagues, collaborators, friends, and former group members from over 30 countries on five continents. It covers the hottest topics in heterogeneous semiconductor photo(electro)catalysis, including novel photocatalysts and photo(electro)catalytic processes, mechanism study, activity evaluation method, applications of photo(electro)catalytic technology for environmental remediation, disinfection, solar fuel generation, and CO2 reduction. We highlight the insightful findings in these excellent contributions, and believe that this virtual SI presents the research frontiers in semiconductor photo(electro)catalysis. Additionally, in this Editorial, we provide a comprehensive overview of Prof. Bahnemann's education, career experiences, and remarkable research achievements.

Abstract:Prof. Bingkun Zhou is a famous expert in optoelectronics and has made the outstanding contribution for the development of optoelectronic technology in China. Thanks for the guidance and support from Prof. Dexiu Huang, Associate Editor-in-Chief of the Frontiers of Optoelectronics, we are honored to edit this special issue with emphasis on the current hot topics and future trends in the area of optoelectronics and applications to celebrate Prof. Bingkun Zhou’s 80 Birthday. Optoelectronics have made enormous progress in the past several decades, during which Prof. Bingkun Zhou dedicated himself to this area. Prof. Bingkun Zhou invented in 1984 a laser-diode-pumped monolithic Nd:YAG laser featuring highest efficiency, narrowest line-width, and most frequency-stability of that time, which starts a brand-new researching field–Diode Pump Solid State Laser. In the years that followed, he has made outstanding contributions to information optoelectronics area, in the meanwhile mentoring a large number of young researchers. His textbook on Laser Principles, first edited in the early 1980s and currently 7 edition, has been widely used as a classic one in Chinese universities and Institutes by many generations of students. In 2008, he was the main founding editor of the Journal Frontiers of Optoelectronics which seeks to provide a multidisciplinary forum for a broad mix of peerreviewed academic papers in order to promote rapid communication and exchange between researchers. This special issue includes 21 excellent scientific reviews and original research papers from China, USA, Germany, UK, Australia, Japan, etc. These papers over the research area of optical communications and networks, microwave photonics, fiber lasers and semiconductor lasers, integrated optics and nano-photonics, etc. with the world’s leading research level. As a present to greet Prof. Bingkun Zhou’s 80 birthday, this special issue is a valuable opportunity for us to express our admiration to Prof. Binghun Zhou through reporting our research progress and sharing our research finding. We sincerely wish that publication of this special issue can promote academic exchange and cooperation, stimulate more innovative achievements. We would sincerely appreciate all the authors for their excellent contributions and the managing editors and other editorial office members of the Frontiers of Optoelectronics for their valuable efforts in the publication of this special issue.
