Abstract:Molecular simulations are now an essential part of modern chemistry and physics, especially for the investigation of macromolecules. They have evolved into mature approaches that can be used effectively to understand the structure-to-property relationships of diverse macromolecular systems. In this article, we provide a tutorial on molecular simulations, focusing on the technical and practical aspects. Several prominent and classical simulation methods and software are introduced. The applications of molecular simulations in various directions of macromolecular science are then featured by representative systems, including self-assembly, crystallization, chemical reaction, and some typical non-equilibrium systems. This tutorial paper provides a useful overview of molecular simulations in the rapid progress of macromolecular science, and suggests guidance for researchers who start exploiting molecular simulations in their study.

Abstract:Solidification nucleation is an everlasting research topic in the fields of materials science and condensed matter physics. Molecular dynamics (MD) and enhanced sampling methods provide a powerful means to observe the microscopic mechanisms of solidification processes in situ at the atomic level and to analyze the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of phase transitions. Recent advancements in MD simulations, particularly those incorporating machine learning (ML) techniques, have remarkably advanced our understanding of nucleation across different systems. This paper first reviews the basic theory of solidification nucleation and introduces common methods used in solidification nucleation simulation studies. It then delves into the application of ML techniques in three key areas: force fields, enhanced sampling, and order parameters. The paper further highlights several representative systems to demonstrate the practical applications of these methods. Finally, a summary and outlook on the future of ML-assisted MD simulations for studying material solidification were provided.

Microscale Thermophysical Engineering

Abstract:Due to recent developments in computer hardware and numerical methods, molecular simulation is emerging as an increasingly important part of modern thermophysical engineering. The three parts of this article present studies on thermal problems under extreme cases in terms of molecular simulation methods (molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods). In the first part, fluid thermodynamic properties under extreme conditions are investigated, including the pressure depression of fluid in nanospace, heat capacity anomaly in atomic clusters, and specific heat and surface tension prediction of undercooled liquid metals. In the second part, molecular simulation results are provided for transport coefficients and transport phenomena, for example, thermal conductance in thin films and its size effect, and ultrafast transport phenomena in media. In the third part, vapor?liquid interface properties are examined, covering the interface thickness, surface tension, kinetic energy distribution, and vaporization/condensation in the interface region. In each part we discuss some controversial problems. Finally, areas are highlighted for future research in molecular simulation studies on thermophysics.
From atomistic simulation towards multiscale modelling of materials

Abstract:This paper discusses some current trends in computational materials science, especially the striving to forge links between modelling activities at various length and timescales. At the atomistic scale, methods based on quantum mechanical, especially density-functional, theories for electronic properties link to atomic/molecular dynamics and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Coarse graining leads to lattice-gas and cellular automata, and eventually to continuum equations solved by finite-element and finite-difference techniques. As examples of hierarchical modelling of materials, the paper describes recent work on anisotropic chemical etching of silicon, irradiation processing of fullerenes, oxygen clustering in silicon and self-diffusion in the compound semiconductor GaSb.

Abstract:Over recent years, a steady increase has been noted in the publication of research articles in Clays and Clay Minerals which have included the use of molecular simulation methods. Based on a keyword search of Web of Science , the number of molecular simulation papers has increased from zero during the first four decades of the journal to five during the late 1990s, to 14 in the 2000s, to 36 so far in the 2010s including those published in this special issue. Most research papers using computational molecular modeling approaches to study the properties of clays and clay-related systems and their practical applications are published in the broader materials science and chemical engineering literature. The clay-minerals community has taken quite a long time to embrace the technical insights associated with using a molecular modeling approach. Not only does a molecular basis help to develop and test crystallographic models of clay structures, it provides critical insight into understanding the fundamental mechanisms that control many physical and chemical properties, thermodynamics, kinetic processes, and reactivity. Molecular simulations help in the interpretation of spectroscopies and microscopies, and in many other critical issues associated with the behavior and dynamics of clay mineral systems. Though clearly not a panacea for all technical challenges in clay mineralogy, molecular models and simulations provide a solid theoretical context to enable us to delve deeper into the fundamental …

Abstract:▪ Abstract Polymers offer a wide spectrum of possibilities for materials applications, in part because of the chemical complexity and variability of the constituent molecules, and in part because they can be blended together with other organic as well as inorganic components. The majority of applications of polymeric materials is based on their excellent mechanical properties, which arise from the long-chain nature of the constituents. Microscopically, this means that polymeric materials are able to respond to external forces in a broad frequency range, i.e., with a broad range of relaxation processes. Computer simulation methods are ideally suited to help to understand these processes and the structural properties that lead to them and to further our ability to predict materials properties and behavior. However, the broad range of timescales and underlying structure prohibits any one single simulation method from capturing all of these processes. This manuscript provides an overview of some of the more popular computational models and methods used today in the field of molecular and mesoscale simulation of polymeric materials, ranging from molecular models and methods that treat electronic degrees of freedom to mesoscopic field theoretic methods.

Abstract:As a newly developed technique, molecular simulation has been widely used in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, biology and many other fields. Applying this method to the study on supercritical fluids, researchers not only get information on the structural and thermodynamic properties, but also overcome the difficulties in the experiments under high pressure and temperature. The simulation methods and results of pure supercritical fluids in bulk and confined space, supercritical. extraction and reaction are reviewed in this article. The new trends and difficulties in these fields are also discussed.

Abstract:Although the intellectual merits of computational modelling across various length and time scales are generally well accepted, good illustrative examples are often lacking. One way to begin appreciating the benefits of the multiscale approach is to first gain experience in probing complex physical phenomena at one scale at a time. Here we discuss materials modelling at two characteristic scales separately, the atomistic level where interactions are specified through classical potentials and the electronic level where interactions are treated quantum mechanically. The former is generally sufficient for dealing with mechanical deformation at large strain, whereas the latter is necessary for treating chemical reactions or electronic transport. We will discuss simulations of defect nucleation using molecular dynamics, the study of water-silica reactions using a tight-binding approach, the design of a semiconductor-oxide interface using density functional theory, and the analysis of conjugated polymer in molecular actuation using Hartree-Fock calculations. The diversity of the problems discussed notwithstanding, our intent is to lay the groundwork for future problems in materials research, a few will be mentioned, where modelling at the electronic and atomistic scales are needed in an integrated fashion. It is in these problems that the full potential of multiscale modelling can be realized.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation is an important tool for studying materials microstructure evolution under radiation effects. This paper introduces four kinds of mainstream large-scale molecular dynamics open source software for materials computing, LAMMPS, Ls1-MarDyn, IMD and CoMD, and compares and analyzes data structures, com-putational methods, parallel decomposition methods and atomic storage, etc. By the design examples, this paper testscomputational efficiency, parallel performance and memory usage. A new idea of less memory-used data structure de-sign for the single crystal is prepared for the simulation characteristics of metal materials evolution under irradiation defects. It provides the basis for subsequent research to realize large temporal and spatial scale molecular dynamics simulation.

Abstract:Materials modelling and design using computational quantum and classical approaches is by now well established as an essential pillar in condensed matter physics, chemistry and materials science research, in addition to experiments and analytical theories. The past few decades have witnessed tremendous advances in methodology development and applications to understand and predict the ground-state, excited-state and dynamical properties of materials, ranging from molecules to nanoscopic/mesoscopic materials to bulk and reduced-dimensional systems. This issue of <i>Nature Materials</i> presents four in-depth Review Articles on the field. This Perspective aims to give a brief overview of the progress, as well as provide some comments on future challenges and opportunities. We envision that increasingly powerful and versatile computational approaches, coupled with new conceptual understandings and the growth of techniques such as machine learning, will play a guiding role in the future search and discovery of materials for science and technology.

Abstract:Martensitic transformation ( MT) is one of the most commonly encountered transformations, existing in many engineering materials, such as steel and shape memory alloys. Optimizing the performance of these transforming materials requires a fundamental understanding about the physical processes of MT from the atom?level. In the absence of experimen?tal information, numerical simulations are critical to the study of the transformation behaviors at their characteristic lattice length scales. This review summarized recent atomic simulation works on martensitic materials. The MT behaviors in shape memory alloys as well as their size effect were first discussed. Then, we analyzed the phase transformation in structural metals, especially their interaction with plastic deformations under extreme compression. Finally, the existing problems and prospects of the related research were presented.
