Based on these, it also provides a guide for the design of materials with oxygen vacancy.

Abstract:TiO2 ceramic films, grown by micro-arc oxidation of titanium plate in a weak acid solution, were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ultra-violet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. Influence of film growth conditions, such as oxidation voltage and oxidation time, on its photo-catalysis was studied. The results show that higher oxidation voltage and longer oxidation time considerably improve photo-catalysis of the TiO2 ceramic films.

Abstract:Solar-induced photothermal catalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising method for chemical CO2 conversion. Modification of the metal oxide catalyst surface, including the introduction of oxygen vacancies and the doping and loading of metal or metal oxides, has a considerable influence on the product selectivity of the CO2RR. The complete free energy profiles of the CO2RR pathway on modified anatase TiO2 (101) surfaces are calculated based on density functional theory. The modified surfaces enhance the adsorption of CO2, and competition between desorption and reduction of the key intermediates (CO*, HCOOH*, HCHO*, and CH3OH*) is crucial to the selectivity for the CO2RR to form C1 products. The loading of Au and the doping of MgO enhance the electron transfer between the key intermediates and the surface, as well as the internal electron transfer inside the key intermediates, which efficiently activates the key intermediates and significantly increases the CH4 selectivity of the CO2RR.
Interface Actions Between TiO2 and Porous Diatomite on the Structure and Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2-diatomite

Abstract:TiO2-diatomite photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel process with various pre-modified diatomite. In order to obtain diatomite with different surface characteristics, two modification approaches including calcination and phosphoric acid treatment on the micro-structure of diatomite are introduced. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and micromorphology analysis. The results indicate that, compared with pure TiO2, the anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature of TiO2 loaded on diatomite carrier is significantly increased to nearly 900 degrees C, depending on the different pretreatment method of diatomite. The photocatalytic activities of different samples were evaluated by their degradation rate of methyl orange ( MO) dye under UV and visible-light irradiation. The samples prepared by phosphoric acid pretreatment method exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. After 90 min of UV irradiation, about 90% of MO is decomposed by the best effective photocatalyst. And after 8 h visible-light irradiation, nearly 60% of MO is decomposed by the same sample. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the H3PO4 pretreatment process can obviously change the surface features of diatomite carrier, cause the formation of Si-O-Ti bond, increase the binding strength between TiO2 and diatomite, restrain crystal growth of loaded TiO2, and thus form thermal-stable meso-porous structure at the granular spaces. It helps to build micro-, meso- and macro-porous hierarchical porous structure in TiO2-diatomite, and improves the charge and mass transfer efficiency during catalyzing process, resulting in the significantly increased photocatalytic activity of TiO2-diatomite pretreated by phosphoric acid. Abstract:The photocatalytic oxidation of water to molecular oxygen is a key step toward the conversion of solar energy to fuels. Understanding the detailed mechanism and kinetics of this reaction is important for the development of robust catalysts with improved efficiency. TiO2 is one of the best-known photocatalysts as well as a model system for the study of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here we use hybrid density functional based energetic calculations and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the pathway and kinetics of the OER on the majority (101) surface of anatase TiO2 in a water environment. Our results show that terminal Ti-OH groups are stable intermediates at the aqueous (101) interface, in accord with the experimental observation that OH radicals are efficiently produced on anatase. Oxidation of Ti-OH gives rise to a second stable intermediate, a surface-bridging peroxo dimer ((O-2(2-))(br)) composed of one water and one surface lattice oxygen atom, consistent with the surface peroxo intermediates revealed by "in situ" measurements on rutile. Our calculations further predict that molecular oxygen evolves directly from (O-2(2-))(br) through a concerted two-electron transfer, thus leading to oxygen exchange between TiO2 and the adsorbed species. Oxygen exchange is found to be negligible on rutile, so that different OER pathways are likely to be operative on the two main TiO2 polymorphs. This difference could explain the observed lower OER activity of anatase relative to rutile.

Abstract:Polymorphs widely exist in nature and synthetic systems and are well known to determine material properties. Understanding phase transformation mechanisms among polymorphs enables the design of structures and tuning of phases to tailor material properties. However, current understanding is limited due to the lack of direct observations of the structural evolution at the atomic scale. Here, integrating (semi) in situ transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory, we report atomic structural evolutions of phase transformation from anatase (A) to rutile (R), brookite (B), R-phase, and TiO. Besides the consistent paths with previous reports, we discover several unreported paths, including a [001] direction and (020) plane of anatase to [100]R and (01[combining macron]1)R of rutile, respectively, ([001]A||[100]R, (020)A||(01[combining macron]1)R) and [001]A||[001]B, (020)A||(220)B. Density functional theory analysis elucidates atomic structural evolution during the processes and over 16% of Ti-O bonds break and reform during the processes with energy barriers of ∼0.7-1.0 eV per TiO2 formula unit. Under electron-beam irradiation, anatase particles transform into TiO2-R phase or TiO at high or room temperature, respectively. We also reveal the anisotropic nature of the electron-beam effect, which is seldom discussed: dependence of crystallographic orientation with respect to electron-beam irradiation direction. Understanding the atomic structural evolution sheds light on interpreting and controlling TiO2 polymorphs and intermediate structures for various applications. The revealed electron-beam effects in our work provide guidance for in situ transmission electron microscopy studies.
Research on Changing Mechanism of Nano-TiO_2' S Crystal Structure

Abstract:Based on the method of statistical physics , the relation equation lnXA=-v_0t exp(-2U_x/ kT) for the change of anatase TiO_2 into rutile TiO_2 is established, where XA is the contents of anatase in the sample, v_0 and U_z are, respectively, the vibration frequency and potential function of an anatase atom, t, k and T are calcination time, Boltzmann constant and calcination temperature, respectively. Because TiO_2 is a molecule with three atoms, it is very difficulty to calculate its v_0 and U_z theoretically. In this article, the nanometer TiO_2 powder with different proportion of anatase was got by calcining the hydrolysising products of the TiOSO_4 solution under different calcination temperatures or times. The values of v_0 and U_z(v_0=5. 3×10~(10)/s,U_z=2. 71×10~(-12) J) were obtained by using the XRD data and corresponding temperature and time. The calculation curves of XA—T and XA—t are in agreement with the experimental results. It shows that the change mechanism from anatase TiO_2 to rutile TiO_2 is the diffuse one.
Study on the Photocatalysis Performance and Degradation Kinetics of X-3B over Modified Titanium Dioxide

Abstract:In this paper, reactive brilliant X-3B was used as a model compound to study the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. Experimental results showed that the adulteration of iron and silver on TiO2 could greatly improve the activity of TiO2, and the optimum adulteration amount of iron and silver was 0.1wt.% (Fe/TiO2) and 0.05wt.% (Ag/TiO2), respectively, at the adulteration range of experiments. The photocatalytic degradation kinetics of X-3B on TiO2, Fe/TiO2 and Ag/TiO2 were also studied. The results showed that the degradation of X-3B on all of them were in accordance with the Langmiur–Hinshelwood kinetics model well, and the sequence of apparent reaction rate constants k of X-3B degradation catalyzed by TiO2, Fe/TiO2 and Ag/TiO2 was Ag/TiO2>Fe/TiO2>TiO2, while adsorption equilibrium constants KA of X-3B on Fe/TiO2 and Ag/TiO2 were approximately the same, and both were greater than that of TiO2.
Mechanism and activity of photocatalytic oxygen evolution on titania anatase in aqueous surroundings.

Abstract:Due to its high overpotential and low efficiency, the conversion of water to O-2 using solar energy remains a bottleneck for photocatalytic water splitting. Here the microscopic mechanisms of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on differently structured anatase surfaces in aqueous surroundings, namely, (101), (001), and (102), are determined and compared systematically by combining first-principles density functional theory calculations and a parallel periodic continuum solvation model. We show that OER involves the sequential removal of protons from surface oxidative species, forming surface peroxo and superoxo intermediates. The initiating step, the first proton removal, dictates the high overpotential. Only at an overpotential of 0.7 V (1.93 V vs SHE) does this rate-controlling step become surmountable at room temperature: the free energy change of the step is 0.69, 0.63, and 0.61 eV for (101), (102), and (001) surfaces, respectively. We therefore conclude that (i) OER is not sensitive to the local surface structure of anatase and (ii) visible light (<similar to 590 nm) is, in principle, capable of driving the photocatatlytic OER on anatase kinetically. By co-doping high-valent elements into the anatase subsurface, we demonstrate that the high overpotential of the OER can be significantly reduced, with extra occupied levels above the valence band.

Abstract:Incorporation of alien atoms into TiO2 is an effective means to extend its light absorption edge for utilizing solar energy sufficiently. Herein, taking rutile and anatase as precursors, respectively, Rh element was attempted to dope into TiO2 by an immersion-calcination process. The results showed that Rh species were readily immerged in the crystal structure of rutile at a temperature above 973 K, while they were constantly positioned on the surface of anatase in a separate form of Rh2O3 nanoparticle even at 1173 K. Density functional theory simulations revealed that the Rh-rutile sample owned a higher negative formation energy than Rh-anatase. Under visible light irradiation and in the presence of ascorbic acid as a sacrificial reagent, photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity over Rh-doped rutile was about 50 times of that over Rh-doped anatase powders. The present work demonstrates the roles of the crystal phase in atom doping that eventually dominates photocatalytic activities.

Abstract:The photocatalytic degradation of soluble dyes over Pt/TiO2, thereaction mechanism and the effect of some factors on photocatalysis's results, such as, the loading amount of Pt over TiO2, the reuse of catalyst, the pH of dying solution, the wave length of light sources and the additive of H2O2. The results showed that the catalytic action of TiO2 remarkably improved loading amount of Pt. Both acid condition and the additive of H2O2 are beneficial to dyes's photocatalysis.

Abstract:Anatase TiO2 plays an important role in catalytic reaction. The present work focused on surface structural and electric structural properties of the anatase TiO2 doped with some 3d transition metals (Mn, Fe and Co). Taking the CO oxidation as a probe reaction, attempts to explain the influence of oxygen vacancies and surface OH groups on the reaction mechanism by using FT-IR characterization and DFT calculation. It is found that doping can activate the surface lattice oxygen by introducing spin polarization, thereby increasing the oxygen vacancy to adsorb more chemisorbed oxygen. It is also found that OH groups increase the catalytic performance by forming bicarbonate which is eventually consumed. At low temperature, the CO oxidation reaction by surface reactive oxygen species and hydroxyl groups together. At high temperature, CO molecules are oxidized by surface reactive oxygen species with CO2 desorption step as the controlling step. Finally, the reaction mechanism was summarized as a Eley-Rideal mechanism.

Here, we take the photocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) as a case study and demonstrate the significance of subtle surface structures in altering the photooxidation functions of anatase and rutile TiO2 under aqueous environments. On the basis of our recent progresses in developing a solution simulation method and clarifying the photocatalytic OER process at rutile TiO2 (Nat. Catal. 2018, 1, 291-299), we successfully identified a complete OER mechanism at the water/anatase-TiO2(101) interface with an explicit involvement of photoholes/radicals and lattice oxygens. Kinetic analysis further revealed the leading reaction pathway varying with the concentration of surface-reaching photoholes (Ch+), as well as the most efficient way to boost the OER via enriching the Ch+ rather than lowering the reaction barriers (of water dissociation or O/O coupling). Anatase TiO2(101) generally shows poorer OER activity relative to the rutile TiO2(110) but much higher surface coverage of O-t(-) radicals under experimental conditions, rationalizing its good activity for photodegradation of organics. Such varied catalytic functions were found to be simply decided by the distance between two vicinal under-coordinated Ti cations on the surface that promotes or prohibits the key step of O/O coupling. These results not only provide essential understandings on the structure-function principles governing the photooxidation behaviors but also offer strategies to achieve efficient catalysis via matching proper surface structures with targeted reaction characteristics.
Catalytic mechanisms for As(III) oxidation by H2O2 over TiO2 surfaces, and effects of support, vacancy and photoirradiation

Abstract:As(III) is much more toxic than As(V) while shows apparently lower affinity at minerals surfaces. Oxidation of As(III) to As(V) by H2O2 over anatase surface provides an attractive avenue for pollution control, and the chemocatalytic and photocatalytic mechanisms are unraveled by means of the DFT + D3 approach. Impacts of anatase as support, O2c/O3c vacancy, photoirradiation are addressed as well. As(III) oxidation under various reaction conditions leads to As(V) through dual electron transfers, while energy barriers differ substantially and decline as 1.80 (direct oxidation) > 1.35 (anatase as support) > 1.24 (O3c vacancy) > 0.50 (chemocatalysis) > 0.28 (photocatalysis) ≥ 0.26 (O2c vacancy) eV. Anatase as support promotes the reaction through bonding with H2O2/As(OH)3 and electron transfers, and its close participation during chemocatalysis produces the TiOOH active site that causes As(III) oxidation to proceed facilely under ambient circumstances. TiOOH exists in two forms (monodentate and bidentate mononuclear) and is critical for chemocatalysis, while its destruction for O3c vacancy exhibits strongly adverse effects to As(III) oxidation. Photoirradiation readily generates the OH• radicals, and corresponding mechanism is plausible while less preferred than the newly posed mechanism based on the Ti(H2O2) active site. Synergism among a number of surface atoms conduces to the superior activity for O2c vacancy and photocatalysis. Results provide a comprehensive understanding for As(III) oxidation to As(V) by H2O2, and facilitate catalysts design for As(III) oxidation that alleviates environmental pollution.
Anatase-TiO2 nano-particle preparation with a micro-mixing technique and its photocatalytic performance

Abstract:A micro-mixing method named membrane dispersion precipitation technology has been developed, and used to prepare titanium oxide nano-particles in this work. Titanium sulfate and ammonia bicarbonate were selected as reactants. The microcrystal structure of the TiO2 was characterized by an X-ray diffractometer, and morphology by a transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the photocatalytic performance of these TiO2 ultra-fine particles were evaluated by the methylic orange photocatalytic degradation. The experimental results showed that the particles were anatase and amorphous phase, the average diameters were in range of 10–20nm. The particles have excellent photocatalytic efficiencies, and more than 90% methylic orange was degraded in an hour. The kinetic behavior of photocatalysis belongs to zero order. It is found that the reaction constant is directly proportional to the diameter of particles, by investigating the influence of the particle size on the photocatalysis.

New Mechanism for Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 on the Anatase TiO2(101) Surface: The Essential Role of Oxygen Vacancy

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into organic molecules is a very complicated and important reaction. Two possible pathways, the fast-hydrogenation (FH) path and the fast-deoxygenation (FdO) path, have been proposed on the most popular photocatalyst TiO2. We have carried out first-principles calculations to investigate both pathways on the perfect and defective anatase TiO2(101) surfaces to provide comprehensive understanding of the reaction mechanism. For the FH path, it is found that oxygen vacancy on defective surface can greatly lower the barrier of the deoxygenation processes, which makes it a more active site than the surface Ti. For the FdO path, our calculation suggests that it can not proceed on the perfect surface, nor can it proceed on the defective surface due to their unfavorable energetics. Based on the fact that the FH path can proceed both at the surface Ti site and the oxygen vacancy site, we have proposed a simple mechanism that is compatible with various experiments. It can properly rationalize the selectivity of the reaction and greatly simplify the picture of the reaction. The important role played by oxygen vacancy in the new mechanism is highlighted and a strategy for design of more efficient photocatalysts is proposed accordingly.
Tartaric Acid-Assisted Preparation and Photocatalytic Performance of Titania Nanoparticles with Controllable Phases of Anatase and Brookite

Abstract:Titanium dioxide with different ratios of anatase to brookite has been prepared by a facile hydrothermal method in the presence of tartaric acid. The resulting samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis. The contents of anatase and brookite in the TiO2 particles have been successfully controlled by simply adjusting molar ratio of tartaric acid to Ti in reaction system. The degradation of Rhodamine B in aqueous solutions reveals that the catalyst containing 78.7 % anatase and 21.3 % brookite has the highest photocatalytic activity. A proposed mechanism is discussed to interpret the evolution of the phases based on the effect of different C4H6O6/Ti molar ratios.
