Abstract:The process of removing impurity ions from the eluent and preparation industrial grade lithium carbonate powder was investigated in this study. The eluent was obtained by eluting MnO 2 ion-sieve precursor after adsorption process with HCl solution. The effects of enrichment on impurities removal efficient, NaOH consumption, size of the precipitate, and lithium loss rate of the precipitation process were systematically investigated. Na 2 CO 3 was used to precipitate Li + in the 5 times concentrate eluent via HPRO after removal impurity ions. The results indicate that the concentrate rate had an essential effect on impurities removal efficient, size of the precipitate, and lithium recovery rate. The optimal purification process was determined as follows: HPRO permeate of an enrichment of 5, the ending pH=12, the feed rate of NaOH was 72 μL/min, and the stirring speed is 300 r/min. Mg 2+ and Mn 2+ in the solution can be completely removed under the optimum operation condition, the maximum mean practical size of Mg（OH） 2 and MnO 2 ·H 2 O blended precipitate reached 28.05 μm and the alkali consumption [molar ratio of Na OH/(Mn 2+ +Mg 2+ )] is reduced to 3.48. Li 2 CO 3 with a purity of 99.51% and mean size of 16.38 μm was produced by adding Na 2 CO 3 directly to the 5 times concentrated eluent after removal of impurity ions. The purity of Li 2 CO 3 powder conformed to the national primary standards of GB/T 11075-2013 and the maximum Li + recovery rate reached 71.26%.

Abstract:The direct carbonation of industrial grade Li2CO3 using pure CO2 induces the formation of impurity-free water-soluble LiHCO3. In this study, microbubble-assisted pressure carbonation using CO2 is performed on industrial grade Li2CO3 to facilitate LiHCO3 formation. The conversion rate is increased by 20–30% compared to that of conventional carbonation methods. The optimum conditions for CO2 carbonation are determined as follows: reaction temperature of 25 °C, pulp density of 60 g L−1, CO2 flow rate of 1.0 L min−1, CO2 partial pressure of 0.4 MPa, reaction time of 120 min, and stirring speed of 400 rpm. The carbonation kinetics of the material is shown to be controlled by surface chemical reactions, with an activation energy of −8.705 kJ mol−1 obtained at 25–55 °C. The mechanism of the surface chemical reactions is further corroborated by XRD patterns and SEM images of the material and the generated residues. Reprecipitation of 83.14% Li in the LiHCO3 solution with 99.99% pure Li2CO3 is achieved via purification and decomposition. This proves the process is possible and practical.

Method for producing highly-pure battery grade lithium carbonate by using lithium sulfate solution

Abstract:The invention discloses a method for producing highly-pure battery grade lithium carbonate by using a lithium sulfate solution. The method comprises the following steps: 1, carrying out lithium sulfate solution salt crystallization refining: adding sodium hydroxide to the lithium sulfate solution used as a raw material, cooling to precipitate sodium sulfate decahydrate, separating out sodium sulfate decahydrate, and complexing calcium, magnesium and other impurities in the salt crystallized lithium solution by using EDTA; 2, carbonizing and precipitating lithium: carrying out a carbonizing and lithium precipitating reaction at a relatively constant high temperature to obtain the highly-pure battery grade lithium carbonate product and a lithium precipitation mother liquor; and 3, recovering the mother liquor: neutralizing the generated lithium precipitation mother liquor with sulfuric acid, concentrating the neutralized lithium precipitation mother liquor, and returning the concentrated mother liquor to the lithium sulfate solution raw material for recycling. The battery grade lithium carbonate produced through the method is highly pure, and lithium carbonate produced by using the lithium sulfate solution recovered through the treatment technology of the lithium precipitation mother liquor still is highly-pure battery grade lithium carbonate, so all of the produced lithium carbonate is the highly-pure battery grade lithium carbonate.

Abstract:Battery-grade lithium carbonate (Li 2 CO 3 ) with a purity of higher than 99.5 wt% is of great importance as a high value-added lithium salt. However, influences of different reaction systems and process control on product purity remain unclear. Herein, a membrane dispersion microreactor was used to enhance the mass transfer of preparation and purification processes in homogeneous and heterogeneous system. Synthetic systems of Na 2 CO 3 –LiCl, NH 4 HCO 3 –LiCl, and NH 3 ·H 2 O−CO 2 −LiCl, CO 2 purification based on carbonation and decomposition were adopted. The Li 2 CO 3 purity was increased by the improvement of mixing performance. The carbonation time was reduced by 62.5% and 58.3% for the NH 3 ·H 2 O−CO 2 and CO 2 purification systems, respectively. In the two ammonia-based systems, Li 2 CO 3 particles with a purity of 99.7−99.8 wt% were one-step prepared with a size of 3−5 μm, which also met the requirement of the battery-grade standard. The purity was further increased to 99.9 wt% by CO 2 purification and LiHCO 3 decomposition. The investigation could provide a feasible alternative for the controllable preparation of battery-grade Li 2 CO 3 in one or multiple steps.

Abstract:A technique for preparing high purity Li2CO3 powders has been developed through mechanochemical process coupled with the dissolution-filtration process. The first step as mechanochemical reaction of both Na2CO3 and LiCl mixtures was designed to obtain the primary Li2CO3 powders using a ball mill. The second step as the dissolution- filtration process was performed to obtain high purity Li2CO3 powders. Experimental results indicate that the three parameters of milling time, rotation speed, and ball-to-sample mass ratio can closely relate with purity of primary Li2CO3 powders. The XRD patterns of primary Li2CO3 powders indicate that mechanochemical reaction of both Na2CO3 and LiCl can be completed in 15 min under optimal conditions at rotation speed as 600 rpm, ball-to-sample mass ratio as 5/1, and molar ratio of Na2CO3 to LiCl as 1/2. The target products of Li2CO3 powders contain impurity of Na+ less than 0.1 mass% with the minimum values as 0.073 mass%. Two shapes of massive particles and smaller grains less than 1 μm in nano scale can be observed in the target products of Li2CO3 powders.

Abstract:With the significant increase of market demand, battery-grade lithium carbonate has become an imperative research. However, it is difficult for commercially available battery-grade lithium carbonate to simultaneously meet all criteria such as dispersion, particle size, particle size distribution, and purity. Here, we proposed a flexible method to prepare battery-grade lithium carbonate with small particle size, uniform size distribution, high purity, and good dispersion by using a high shear dispersion reactor under low-temperature conditions. First, a numerical simulation model was established, and the feasibility of this proposed method was verified by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Then, the factors of yield optimization on Li2CO3 were analyzed based on response surface methodology (RSM) by using a 3-level 4-factor Box-Behnken statistical design with a fixed lithium solution concentration as the input parameter. Moreover, the reaction kinetics, size distribution, crystal morphology, and purity of Li2CO3 were investigated. The obtained Li2CO3 possessed the average particle size in 5.85 μm and total particle size range from 1.56 to 12.97 μm, which both exhibited a ten-fold reduction compared with it prepared under conventional preparation conditions. Finally, the Li2CO3 products with 99.81% purity met the requirements of the Chinese non-ferrous metal industry standard (YS/T582-2013) for battery-grade Li2CO3. We anticipate that this work may shed light on developing efficient and controllable method for the preparation of battery-grade Li2CO3.

Abstract:With the rapid development of new energy industry,lithium industry based on lithium carbonate products has a broad prospect.The preparation process of lithium carbonate by reactive crystallization with old salt brine and sodium carbonate was studied.The effects of reaction time,reaction temperature,stirring rate,feeding rate,concentration of Li+,dosage of sodium carbonate,concentration of sodium carbonate and washing times on the purity and yield of lithium carbonate were investigated.The optimal conditions were obtained as follows:reaction time was 60~70min,temperature was 80~90℃,stirring rate was 200 r/min,feeding rate was 15 mL/min,concentration of Li+and Na2CO3were 25 g/L and 260g/L respectively,addition of Na2CO3was 110% of theoretical dosage,products can meet to the requirement of the national primary standards after washing 4 times.

Abstract:In this study, a process for preparing battery-grade lithium carbonate with lithium-rich solution obtained from the low lithium leaching solution of fly ash by adsorption method was proposed. A carbonization-decomposition process was carried out to remove impurities such as iron and aluminum. First, primary Li2CO3 was treated by CO2 to get the more soluble bicarbonates. The decomposition of LiHCO3 produced insoluble Li2CO3 at 90 °C And Li2CO3 was smashed by air stream pulverization. The final precipitation yielded a high purity (99.6%) and homogeneous Li2CO3. Some factors affecting production efficiency were investigated. The results showed that a liquid-solid ratio of 25:1, a carbonization temperature of 25 °C, an air velocity of 2 L/min, and a stirring speed of 400 rpm; a decomposition temperature of 90 °C and a stirring speed of 400 rpm, a molar ratio of EDTA to Ca 2:1; an air pressure of 0.3 MPa and hot water washing precipitate (L/S mass ratio 2:1) promoted ions removal.

Abstract:Preparation of lithium carbonate from spodumene concentrate was carried out by a sodium carbonate autoclave process. The effects of different operation conditions including liquid-to-solid ratio, Na/Li ratio, agitation speed, reaction temperature and reaction time on the lithium carbonate conversion efficiencies were initially investigated. The results show that the conversion efficiency is not less than 94% under the optimal conditions. The purity of the obtained lithium carbonate can reaches up to 99.6%, which is higher than that obtained by sulfuric acid method.

A Comprehensive Membrane Process for Preparing Lithium Carbonate from High Mg/Li Brine

Abstract:The preparation of Li2CO3 from brine with a high mass ratio of Mg/Li is a worldwide technology problem. Membrane separation is considered as a green and efficient method. In this paper, a comprehensive Li2CO3 preparation process, which involves electrochemical intercalation-deintercalation, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, evaporation, and precipitation, was constructed. Concretely, the electrochemical intercalation-deintercalation method shows excellent separation performance of lithium and magnesium, and the mass ratio of Mg/Li decreased from the initial 58.5 in the brine to 0.93 in the obtained lithium-containing anolyte. Subsequently, the purification and concentration are performed based on nanofiltration and reverse osmosis technologies, which remove mass magnesium and enrich lithium, respectively. After further evaporation and purification, industrial-grade Li2CO3 can be prepared directly. The direct recovery of lithium from the high Mg/Li brine to the production of Li2CO3 can reach 68.7%, considering that most of the solutions are cycled in the system, the total recovery of lithium will be greater than 85%. In general, this new integrated lithium extraction system provides a new perspective for preparing lithium carbonate from high Mg/Li brine.

Abstract:The invention discloses a preparation method for a lithium silicate CO2 adsorbent. The CO2 adsorbent with the component being lithium silicate is obtained by selecting organic lithium salt and a silica sol as precusors of lithium and silicon dioxide, respectively; fully and uniformly mixing the organic lithium salt and the silica sol in a solvent; and calcining the mixture at a high temperature. In the preparation process, by adjusting the stoichiometric number proportioning of lithium and silicon dioxide in the lithium and silicon precusors, the optimization of the reaction is realized. The lithium silicate CO2 adsorbent which is excellent in performance is prepared by virtue of the method disclosed by the invention. The adsorptive property of the adsorbent reaches over 30-50% of the theoretical maximum adsorption. Moreover, in 40 cycles, the adsorbent pores are more developed as the cycle index is increased and the adsorption capacity is further enhanced as the cycle index is increased.

Abstract:A new purification process of industrial manganese sulfate was expounded emphatically.The specific details were presented as follows:the calcium-magnesium was removed by adding manganese fluoride in solution at first;then the ferrum was oxidated by potassium permanganate and purificated through hydrolyzation.Experiment results showed that the purification had good effect on the removal of calcium-magnesium and ferrum.MnO2 was prepared by using a liquid co-precipitation method with the pre-purified manganese sulfate as a source of manganese,and finally LiMn2O4 products were successfully prepared.X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) results showed the particles of as-synthesized LiMn2O4 products were small microspheres and X-ray diffraction peaks corresponded well to the Fd3m spinel structure.

Abstract:By choosing cobalt chloride as raw material,sodium carbonate as precipitator,with cobalt ion concentration 65~70 g/L,and molar ratio of cobalt chloride and sodium carbonate 0.63～0.72,adding precipitator to cobalt chloride solution,with precipitant liquid pH 9.0~9.5,the lithium battery-grade salt cobalt carbonate was prepared.The results show that in above conditions,practical precursor battery-grade salt cobalt carbonate could be acquired.

Abstract:Citric acid, nitric acid, ferrous phosphate and lithium carbonate as raw materials, the precursor Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 were synthesized by precipitation method, and nano-porous lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) was prepared by modified sol-gel method. The influence of pH to purity and yield of precursor Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and sintering temperature to purity of LiFePO 4 were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy techniques (TEM) were used to character the phase and morphology of nano-porous lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ).

Abstract:Lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) plays a crucial role in advancing state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for efficient energy storage. The primary source of lithium is lithium-rich brines, which have complex compositions. Conventional extraction processes from brines involve cumbersome methods that often lead to emissions and/or large volumes of wastewater. To address these environmental challenges, a novel and eco-friendly lithium extraction process under ambient pressure is necessary. In this project, we developed an electrolytic process utilizing a NASICON-type solid-state electrolyte (LATP) to extract lithium chloride from low-purity sources at a temperature of 380 °C. To reduce the melting points of the lithium sources, ZnCl2 was introduced as a fluxing agent. The electrolytic process effectively separated Li+ from other coexisting ions, but resulted in their mixture with Zn2+. Subsequently, purification and carbonation processes were employed to produce high-purity Li2CO3 (98.9 %). We also obtained high-purity Zn(OH)2 (>99.9 %) as a value by-product. Despite the formation of color centers that caused the LATP disk to change from white to black during the electrolytic process, it exhibited sufficient ionic conductivity for successful lithium extraction. Our environmentally friendly approach offers a promising pathway for efficient and sustainable lithium extraction, contributing to the advancement of LIB technology for energy storage applications.
A New Technique for Preparation of the Cathode Material of Lithium-ion Battery

Abstract:The cathode material LiCoO2 of lithium-ion batteries can be obtained from the reaction of LiOH center dot H2O and Co(OH)(2-2x)R-x(R is the inorganic or organic acid radicals), which is the midst product of the electrolysis of the metal cobalt in a given electrolyte. The achieved cathode material LiCoO2 for lithium-ion batteries has a single phase and its granularity distribution relatively concentrates through the experiments of XRD. SEM and Laser Granularity Testing. The discharge capacity is relatively high which reaches 146mAh/g at the first time of discharging and still maintains 142mAh/g after 10 cycles of charge/discharge experiments. The cost for the preparation of the cathode material LiCoO2 can greatly be decreased through this technique, which has a well-promising application future.
