A New Species of Caryanda Stål from China and Analysis of Its Chromosome C-banding Karyotype (orthoptera: Acridoidea)

Abstract:A new species, Caryanda microdentata, sp. nov. (Catantopidae), is described from China. The type specimens are deposited in the Animal Museum of College of Life Sciences, Hunan Normal University. The chromosome C-banding technique has been employed to study the C-karyotypes of three species of Caryanda Stal, namely C microdentata, sp. nov., C obtusidentata Fu & Zheng and C. nigrovittata Lian & Zheng. The primary and secondary spermatocyte meiotic metaphases (metaphase I and metaphase 11) of the three species are analysed. In the chromosome complement, C microdentata clearly differs from the other two in the corresponding relative length valves of no. 1, no. 3 and no. X chromosomes. In the C-banding patterns, C microdentata and the other two related species show high ratio of interstitial C-bands. These three species of Caryanda have high values of C-heterochromatin content (above 30%). But the C-bands distribution of C. nigrovittata is clearly different from the former two species as follows: 1) there is no showing any interstitial and terminal C-bands in no. I chromosome; 2) no.4, 7 and 8 chromosomes each show a larger block of interstitial C-band. C microdentata is closest to C obtusidentata in C-banding patterns. Nevertheless, a few minor differences exist between the two species: No. 1, 2, 3 and X chromosomes of C obtusidentata consistently show dark terminal C-bands, but corresponding chromosomes of C microdentata do not show this. However, no.7 chromosome of C microdentala clearly displays in a row three interstitial C-banding blocks proximal to the telomere. The above-mentioned facts provide cytological basis for distinguishing C microdentata, sp. nov. from its its two closely related species.
