Abstract:Polyesteramide copolymer is a newly developed biodegradable high - molecular material. The characteristic of polyesteramide copolymers degraded by microorganisms has been tested and studied through the compost method, weight loss test, CO2 formation assay, surface observation of enzyme degradation and clear - zone technique. Some strains that have depolymerase activity have been isolated. The results of these experiments clearly indicate that polyesteramide copolymer has good biodegradability and is a potential environmental protection material.

Abstract:The present article reviews recent advances in synthesis of biodegradable polyesters,which include aliphatic polyester and polyester containing aromatic constituents,by polycondensation from the standpoint of molecular design.The synthesis of poly(lactic acid) is mainly described and so is that of polyesters from renewable natural resources.Meanwhile the biodegradability of synthetic polyesters is also discussed in relation to the molecular structure.

Abstract:There are some persons who stand out prominently in any review of the history of polyesters. This chapter talks about two giant polymer scientists Staudinger and Carothers and their contributions to the origin and further development of polymer science as well as some historical records on the synthesis of polyamides and polyesters. Three well‐known biodegradable polyesters, namely, Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), Poly(glycolic acid) (PGA), and poly(caprolactone) were selected to describe their synthesis, structures, properties, and applications. Owing to the similarity of the biodegradable polyesters in synthesis, properties, and applications, the chapter gives the readers a general outline about biodegradable polyesters. Biodegradable polyesters have intensively been researched in the last two decades because of their biodegradability and superb physical properties. Recently, nanomaterials, nanotechnology, and the opportunities for wider medical applications have resulted in much more attention being directed to this class of polyesters.

Abstract:. A new type of biodegradable polyesteramide P(LA/AU) based on lactic acid and aminoundecanoic acid was synthesized by the melt polycondensation method. The copolymers obtained were characterized by FTIR, 1 H-NMR, DSC, and XRD. The in vitro degradation behavior of the copolymers was studied using weighing, 1 H-NMR, FTIR, DSC, and SEM. With the increase in aminoundecanoic acid units, the melting temperature and crystallinity increased, but the water absorption and degradation rate decreased accordingly. During degradation in vitro, the ester moiety decreased due to ester cleavage along the macromolecular main chain. As degradation proceeded, the melting temperature and crystallinity increased at first, then started to decrease because the crystalline phase was destroyed.

Abstract:Progress on biodegradable aromatic/aliphatic copolyesters based on aliphatic and aromatic diacids, diols and ester monomers was reviewed. The aromatic/aliphatic copolyesters combined excellent mechanical properties with biodegradability. Physical properties and biodegradability of copolyesters varied with chain length of the aliphatic polyester segment and atacticity of copolyesters. The processability of copolyesters could be improved significantly after incorporating a stiff chain segment through copolymerization of aliphatic polyesters with an aromatic liquid crystal element. The aromatic/aliphatic copolyesters as a new type of biodegradable materials could replace some general plastics in certain applications, namely biomedical and environmental friendly fields.

Abstract:The issue of non-degradable petroleum-based plastic waste is a global challenge that requires urgent attention due to its harmful impact on humans and the environment. Biomass-based materials have garnered significant attention to address this challenge in recent times. Lignin, with its abundance, low price, and rich aromatic group, is not only an essential biomass but also a crucial material that can be utilized to produce biodegradable polymers. This review paper provides a comprehensive knowledge of synthesis and applications related to lignin, polyester, and lignin-polyester copolymer with a specific focus on their organic polymer synthesis techniques and diverse applications. Beginning with lignin, the review explores various extraction methods from a raw biomass resouces aimed at enhancing its compatibility with polyester matrices. Next, we discuss lignin chemical modification methods that alter its chemical structures and properties, ultimately enhancing its integration with polyesters. Subsequently, the synthesis of polyester is examined, encompassing condensation polymerizations and ring-opening polymerizations. These methods are evaluated for their scalability and capability to produce tailored polymer chains suitable for copolymerization with lignin. The copolymerization strategies involving lignin and polyester are explored in detail, including graft-onto and graft-from approaches. Each method is discussed for its ability to control copolymer composition and properties, which are crucial for achieving desired material characteristics. In terms of applications, the review highlights the wide-ranging utility of lignin-polyester copolymer across industries such as packaging, construction, and separation. These polymers offer improved biodegradability, thermal stability, and mechanical strength compared to conventional polyesters, making them a perfect candidate as a novel sustainable material. Overall, this review provides valuable insights into the synthesis methods and applications of lignin, polyester, and lignin-polyester copolymer offering a comprehensive overview of their potential in addressing environmental concerns and expanding the scope of lignin-derived materials in various industrial applications.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the recent developments in studies on biodegradable polyesters prepared via modification of aliphatic polyesters. The processability of polyesters could be improved significantly after incorporating stiff chain segment through copolymerization of aliphatic polyester with aromatic liquid crystal element. The hydrophilicity of polyesters could be raised after introducing macromolecular hydrophilic radical via copolymerization of aliphatic polyester starch with polyethylene glycol. The future studies on modification of aliphatic polyesters would be focused on developing the technologies for introducing functionalized group, simplifying synthetic route, reducing cost and improving modification effectiveness.

Abstract:Abstact Biodegradable polyesters are polymer materials, which have been synthesized by chemical methods, enzymatic-catalysis and ferment. The recent progress of some biodegradable polyester enzymatic-catalysis synthesis methods is reviewed in this paper. Enzymatic-catalysis methods include ring-opening polymerization of lactones, step-growth polycondensation of diacids and diols, hydroxy acids and transesterification of diesters. Enzyme catalyzed synthesis of the polyesters is a new eco-friendly, mild and efficient technique. Moreover, specific enzyme catalysis can provide a novel synthetic route for useful polyesters, many of which are difficult to be synthesized by conventional methods.

Abstract:Poly(alkylene dicarboxylate)s constitute a family of biodegradable polymers with increasing interest for both commodity and speciality applications. Most of these polymers can be prepared from biobased diols and dicarboxylic acids such as 1,4-butanediol, succinic acid and carbohydrates. This review provides a current status report concerning synthesis, biodegradation and applications of a series of polymers that cover a wide range of properties, namely, materials from elastomeric to rigid characteristics that are suitable for applications such as hydrogels, soft tissue engineering, drug delivery systems and liquid crystals. Finally, the incorporation of aromatic units and α-amino acids is considered since stiffness of molecular chains and intermolecular interactions can be drastically changed. In fact, poly(ester amide)s derived from naturally occurring amino acids offer great possibilities as biodegradable materials for biomedical applications which are also extensively discussed.

Abstract:Series of biodegradable polyesters poly(butylene adipate) (PBA), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), and poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT) were synthesized successfully by melt polycondensation. The polyesters were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), respectively. The blends of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and biodegradable polyester were prepared using a twin screw extruder. PBAT, PBS, or PBA can be homogenously dispersed in PLA matrix at a low content (5-20 wt%), yielding the blends with much higher elongation at break than homo-PLA. DSC analysis shows that the isothermal and nonisothermal crystallizabilities of PLA component are promoted in the presence of a small amount of PBAT.

Abstract:This review includes the wide range of biodegradable aliphatic polyesters synthesized from various sources, the properties, and details of the synthesis methods in three techniques such as ring‐opening polymerization, polycondensation, and microbial fermentation. The emerging applications and challenges of biodegradable polyesters are also covered in this review. Biodegradable polymers are gaining attention as alternatives to non‐biodegradable plastics to address environmental issues. With the rising global demand for plastic products, the development of non‐toxic, biodegradable plastics is a significant topic of research. Aliphatic polyester, the most common biodegradable polyester, is notable for its semi‐crystalline structure and can be synthesized from fossil fuels, microbial fermentation, and plants. Due to great properties like being lightweight, biodegradable, biocompatible, and non‐toxic, aliphatic polyesters are used in packaging, medical, agricultural, wearable devices, sensors, and textile applications. The biodegradation rate, crucial for biodegradable polymers, is discussed in this review as it is influenced by their structural properties and environmental conditions. This review discusses currently available biodegradable polyesters, their emerging applications, and the challenges in their commercialization. As research in this area grows, this review emphasizes the innovation in biodegradable aliphatic polyesters and their role in advancing environmental sustainability.

Abstract:The Biginelli reaction, a three-component cyclocondensation reaction, is an important member of the multicomponent reaction (MCR) family. In this study, we conducted end-group modifications on a variety of biodegradable polyesters, including poly(1,4-butylene adipate) (PBA), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), polylactic acid (PLA), and poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO), based on the precursor polyethylene glycol (PEG). By combining two polymers through the Biginelli multi-component reaction, four new biodegradable polyester copolymers, namely DHPM-PBA, DHPM-PCL, DHPM-PLA, and DHPM-PPDO, were formed. These Biginelli reactions demonstrated exceptional completeness, validating the efficiency of the synthesis strategy. Although the introduction of various polyesters lead to different properties, such as crystallinity and cytotoxicity, the newly synthesized 3,4-dihydro-2(H)-pyrimidinone compounds (DHPMs) exhibit enhanced hydrophilicity and can self-assemble in water and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution to form micelles with a controllable size. Furthermore, DHPM-PPDO promotes cellular growth and has potential applications in wound healing and tissue engineering. In conclusion, this method demonstrates great universality and methodological significance and offers insights into the medical applications of polyethylene glycol.
Synthesis and Degradation of Polyesteramide Based on L-Lactic acid and β-Alanine

Abstract:Poly (L-lactic acid-co-β-alanine), a novel biodegradable polyesteramide, was produced by direct melting copolymerization with stannous chloride and β-toluenesulfonic acid as the catalyst, and characterized via FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, GPC and DSC. To optimize the copolymerization conditions, the content of catalyst, copolymerization temperature and time, as well as the feed ratio, were investigated. The results show the copolymers with a high molecular weight could be obtained from the copolymerization process conducted at 180°C for 15 h with 1.5% of stannous complex catalyst under vacuum. The hydrolytic degradation test in PBS (pH = 7.2, 37°C) indicates poly (L-lactic acid-co-β-alanine) has an excellent degradability, which could provide a potential application in the biomedical field as a drug control released material.

Abstract:Biodegradable polymers have attracted much attention in biomedical,packaging,textile and electronic fields due to the degradability into harmless products after the end uses.The progress in the synthesis of ploylactide,poly(amino acid) and poly(p-dioxone),and the further uses as biodegradable temperature-sensitive hydrogels and shape-memory polymers were reviewed.The applications of biodegradable polymers as carriers for bioactive macromolecules and fibrous scaffolds for tissue engineering were clarified in detail.The commercialization of biodegradable polymers,medical devices,drug formulations and tissue engineering was briefly introduced.Finally,the prospects on the academic research and industrial applications of biodegradable polymers were provided.
