Abstract:BACKGROUND: The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) plays an important role in supporting scientific research. And numerous scientists and researchers are concerned about the applications and funding.METHODS: Annual reports of 2014-2018 were searched respectively from the NSFC official website. Further analysis was made to discover the regularity and trend of projects funded by NSFC.RESULTS: The funding by NSFC continuously increased rapidly since its establishment. Recently, the annual amount, which is still on the rise, has reached more than 20 billion CNY. From the year 2014 to 2018 multifarious projects types were set up by NSFC to support scientific research of different level and multiple dimensions.CONCLUSIONS: In the past years, NSFC had provides strong support to basic scientific research in all fronts and provided a mechanism for fair competition.

Abstract:An analysis of polar science research supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China from 1998 to 2014 was carried out to determine the number of projects per year , the types of projects , the scientific disci-plines , and affiliations of the researchers .The analysis shows that polar science research projects and funding have increased year by year .Polar science research projects were mostly conducted by researchers from research institu-tes affiliated with the NSFC departments of Earth Sciences , Life Sciences , and Mathematical Sciences .Most were general projects and youth science foundation projects .

Abstract:Taking highly cited papers in Journal of Southwest Forestry University from 2002 to 2006 as study objects,statistical analysis done with indicators such as author groups shows: internal papers account for a higher percentage of total of five years,but the proportions of every year's took on a decline as time flowed.The proportion of papers supported by national grade fund had increased yearly.The region distribution of the authors has got further expanded,who still mostly have backgrounds of university.Co-author accounts for 86.7% in average.From the perspective of subject distribution,forestry basic subjects,horticulture and biology etc.possess high ratios.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) plays an important role in supporting scientific research. The Major Program is one of the most important types as it improves the capability of indigenous innovation in China's basic research efforts. Thus, numerous scientists and researchers are concerned about its application and funding aspects.METHODS: The information and data of the Major Program were collected from guide books and annual reports released between the years 2010 to 2018 via the NSFC official website. We conducted further analysis to discover any regularities and tendencies.RESULTS: From 2010 to 2018, a total of 21 areas in the field of health science were funded by the NSFC and eventually 87 projects were approved, totaling 32.8 million CNY. The applicants funded were from 43 host institutions, 70 were males and 17 were females, and the applicants were aged between of 35 and 77 years. Of all the applicants funded, 86 had senior title while only 1 had deputy senior title. The collaboration of institutions was common in the applications.CONCLUSIONS: Several characteristics of the Major Program could be found based on the analysis, which may be beneficial for the applicants in the future.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to describe the funding condition of Chinese Land Sciences, to summarize disciplines closely related, and analyze the preferences and critical issues of different Funds and Projects. By retrieving the latest-set-up projects, the study has selected land sciences researches funded by NNSF, NNSSF, MOE Project of Humanities and Social Sciences and The Ministry of Land and Resources of Public Welfare Scientific Research in 2014. Method employed is literature retrieval. The results show that Land Sciences Research has been strongly supported by Funds and Projects as well as various disciplines in 2014, in which NNSSF is the major fund while Geography, Economics, Management and Law are disciplines closely related. It is concluded that further study will be mainly focused on land use process and its influence on ecological environment, the optimization of land system with problems connected to economy and society, the allocation of land resources and so on.

Abstract:Based on the data of 2006-2015 National Natural Science Foundation Department of Management Sciences projects,this study makes comparisons about management science project funding and its time trends during the national "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" and "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period,in terms of funding category,structure of research team,supporting institutions and research field.The result presents some special characters as follows:the number of projects shows a steady growth,and the amounts and intensity of funding keep improving;the growth of both Regional Science Fund Projects and Young Scientists Fund Projects takes the head;project leaders become younger in average age,with higher degrees and lower title;most supporting constitutions are colleges and universities,especially 985 Project ones;projects of Health Management and Policy,Resources and Environment Policy and Management as well as Macroeconomic Management and Strategic areas increase significantly;research hotspots continue expanding,while have some changes in a stable trend.

Abstract:The National Natural Science Foundation is an important part of Chinese scientific research fund system,the allocation of funds has been the concern.The trend of "Gini coefficient" which reflects the gap between rich and poor economic indicators,2001-2015 years of National Natural Science Fund Allocation in the "Matthew effect" has carried on the empirical analysis.The results show that the higher the amount of funding for the project,the Gini coefficient is,in the allocation of funds in the process embodied by the "Matthew effect" is obvious.The National Natural Science Foundation of the "key",the "outstanding" project and the "face","Youth" project has more obvious advantage accumulation phenomenon,but the "Gini the coefficient of youth" project since 2009 show a decreasing trend,the allocation of funds is more reasonable.Finally,based on the above results,the National Natural Science Fund Allocation in the "Matthew effect" Rational analysis and reasonable allocation of funds put forward related suggestions.

Abstract:This paper proposes a set of evaluation index system for the projects supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC),and analyzes foundations in terms of the number of funded projects,the amount of subsidy,paper outputs of projects,the amount per project,paper output per project and the amount per paper etc.,and introduces H-index and G-index of bibliometrics into the system. Then it establishes a visual analysis system for the projects funded by NSFC to turn out a time sequence diagram for each index and analyzes its trends. This paper fits for the indices of project paper output and the paper output per project through the K-S test and the normal curve. The results reveal that both of them agree with the normal distribution on a significant level of 0. 70,and achieve the respective year of the maximum value; and the index paper output per project reaches the maximum value earlier than the index project paper output.

Abstract:Objective To summarize the projects funded in the field of locomotor system from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Young Scientist Funds from 2010 to 2014.Methods The Young Scientist Funds in the field of locomotor medicine from NSFC were statistically analyzed,and the situation of various branches and hot issues were reviewed from 2010 to 2014.Results (1) There were 374 projects with 83.95 million RMB in H06 category funded by NSFC Young Scientists Funding;(2) The sub-categories of the most funded projects were H0605 (the injury and repair of bone,joints and soft tissue,128 projects) and H0609 (the degenerative disease of bone,joints and soft tissue,87 projects);(3) Intervertebral disc degeneration and osteoarthritis were the most involved diseases in the application and approved projects;(4) The top 3 funded affiliations were Shanghai Jiaotong University,Zhejiang University and Second Military Medical University,both in number of projects and total funds;(5) Young investigators supported by Young Scientists Funds were much earlier and easier to obtain Major Research Plans from NSFC.Conclusion The projects supported by Young Scientist Funds grew rapidly in the field of Locomotor Medicine from NSFC.Young Scientist Funds provided great guidance for the young investigators in China,which was very important to promote the development in the field of locomotor system.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is a vital source of support for scientific research in China and abroad. Among the 18 categories programs managed by the NSFC, the Joint Fund, which looks to develop innovation in basic Chinese research, has drawn particular interest from scientists and researchers. This study set out to review the distribution of funding from the Joint Fund in recent years to provide potential applicants with a useful point of reference.METHODS: Guidebooks and annual reports published from 2015 to 2019 were accessed on the NSFC website and the relevant data from the Joint Fund were obtained. The data were analyzed to identify any trends or patterns in funding distribution.RESULTS: Between 2015 and 2019, the NSFC's Joint Fund awarded a total of 46 million Chinese yuan (CNY) to 354 projects in 29 areas within the field of population health. The funding recipients, who were aged between 30 and 66 years old, came from 47 host institutions. Among the successful applicants, 225 were in senior level positions, 129 were in deputy senior level positions, and 19 were in medium-grade professional positions. Collaboration between institutions was a common feature of funding applications.CONCLUSIONS: By analyzing the distribution of funding from the Joint Fund, we identified a number of common features of successful funding applications, which may help to inform future funding applications.

Abstract:As one of the most important funding sources in basic science research, the effect of National Natural Science Fund have been paid more and more attention by the public.In this paper, We mainly analyzed the fundings for the principle investigators of China's top ten progress of science supported by National Natural Sci-ence Fund in recent years, and summarized four impor-tant features.This paper showed that the National Natu-ral Science Fund played an important role in supporting the key disciplines, encouraging interdisciplinary com-bination and integration, promoting the formation of new subject, and cultivating outstanding talents.

Abstract:Analyzing and understanding the structure and growth dynamics of semi-natural plantations is useful for their management. Since 1987, 16 plots with 4 treatments (CT: control; LT: light thinning; MT: medium thinning; and HT: heavy thinning) by 0, 20, 30 and 40% of basal area removal, respectively, and four replications were established in semi-natural larch-spruce-fir forests in northeast China. The structure and growth dynamics of semi-natural larch-spruce-fir stands and the effects of thinning on the growth, structure and diversity were examined. A mixed model repeated measures analysis of variance (RMANOVA) was used to test the effects of treatment and time.

Abstract:This article aimed atsummarizing and analyzing the status of the application,acceptance,funding of the General Program,Young Scientists Fund and Fund for Less Developed Regions supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in the field of traditional Chinese medicine discipline which included all the branches (H2701-H2721) in 2016,the first year of the 13th five-year plan.And then,comparing the data from 2014-2016 to analyze the funding status,while the hot science hypotheses in traditional Chinese medicine discipline were collected and analyzed in the light of funding projects and experts' opinions.The overall level of funding projects has been a vast improvement,however,there still are some existing problems,to which all applicants and review experts should pay attention.Through the analysis of data,it is our hope to provide more useful information for clinical physician and basic researchers in the application process for NSFC funds.

Abstract:Geographic Information System(GIS) is more and more important in the development of information, security, economy, and research of China. The National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) has pushed ahead basic and applied basic research of GIS. In this paper, the analysis is given about the GIS projects supported by NSFC from 1991 to 2001 according to the three aspects of award program quantities, articles in core refereed journals, and the fosters of scientific talents, with the example of the programs supported by the Geography discipline of the departments of Earth Sciences. A comparison was made between the projects supported by NSFC and NSF of U. S during 1991～2001. In order to quicken the basic and applied basic research of GIS, we advice NSFC to increase the award GIS programs quantities step by step, support excellent multi-corporation and multi-disciplines' GIS research communities, and add GIS items in the Guide to Programs of NSFC.

Abstract:In the past decades, the field of wood science and technology (WST) in the world has experienced significant changes in response to changes in resources, environments, technologies, and other emerging issues. WST in China is becoming a strong scientific discipline and has had an obvious impact on the global WST research and development (R&D) activities. In this article, a comprehensive review of the recent WST R&D advances in China is presented. Among various contributing factors, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), a state funding agency for basic research, has played a critical role in helping to shape up the Chinese R&D activities in the field. NSFC funding information in the WST field from 1988 to 2014, including the number of approved projects, funding level, and supported program categories, was retrieved and analyzed. The positive roles of NSFC in supporting free exploration, cultivating research teams and youth talents, and promoting WST R&D are demonstrated. Hot spots in some focused research areas, key advances in the field, challenges, and future prospect of the Chinese WST development are outlined.

Comparative Study on Output Performance of Major Public Funds in Terms of Chinese-language Publications

Abstract:Based on publications indexed in the Chinese Science and Technology Papers and Citation Database(CSTPCD) and four major government funding resources,the paper analyzed relations between funding and publication productivity from different perspectives.Government funding to research and development has been increased continuously.Basic research and technology development are treated differently.Government's basic policy can be generalized as:while ensuring basic research actively supporting technology development.Regional distribution of funding resources is highly skewed because of uneven distribution of research capability and scale,which also reflects the basic rules of competitive funding policies-funds goes with capability.Study based on the National Science Foundation of China(NSFC) shows that NSFC's contribution to regional CSTPCD publications is going towards even distribution;Funding strength among science domains varies with life sciences,medical science and materials science benefit the most.Nevertheless,publication productivity of science domains doesn't correlates significantly with funding strength.

Abstract:This study focused on the Young Scientist Fund in geography supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) from 1987 to 2016.Through the collection and analysis of information including applicants' profile,supporting institution,and follow-up funding,this study revealed the Young Scientist Fund support for the sub-disciplines of geography and their regional distribution characteristics.The gender,age,affiliation,and academic title of the project managers and their abilities to generate further funding from the NSFC were also analyzed.The 30 years' implementation of the Young Scientist Fund helped to bring up a great number of outstanding young scholars in various sub-disciplines of geography,which has laid a solid foundation for the cultivation of talents in geography in China.
